COMMENCEMENT ADDRESSW I N T E R C L A S S O F 2020

You have arrived at the end of your journey through your pursuit of a Bachelor’s Degree in the study ofInternational Studies. Let me be blunt, the end is not supposed to be like this. You do deserve morehonor and recognition that we are able to provide. Times like these are tough. But as a class, tough experiences are the norm. You have experienced majordisruptions as students. Whether it be recovering from Hurricanes Florence and Dorian, and nowCOVID-19, forcing us to stay at home, socially distance, and change a wide range of behaviors to keepourselves and others safe. At the same time, let’s admit the obvious. As students, you are unique forthese experiences. You, as Students, are put through more disruption than other students. You are required, whenpossible, to travel overseas and to have an international experience. Let us take a moment to explorewhat that is, and why that makes you more resilient in this moment than you may realize. Goingoverseas means you leave behind a network of friends, family, and a society and culture you know verywell. In going overseas you expose yourself to new people, new learning environments, and experiencesthat cannot be replicated in a classroom. You learn about cultural and social globalization in class. Butin what way can that lecture ever match the experience, seeing it in real time, with real impact. Youare exposed to new languages, foods, and opportunities to do things you would not have imagined. As astudent we expose you to disruptive experiences, and you are required to navigate it. Did you understand then that this experience would provide you with skills to navigate a worldriddled with disruption? Did you understand that your experience would make you resilient in the faceof challenges, like Hurricanes, and Pandemics? Likely not. After all we do not send you out with theexpectation that you would have to face natural disasters of this nature, or public health crises. At thesame time, what we do know in our own experiences is that life will throw at you much uncertainty. The best we can do in your time with us is prepare you the best we can to meet these challenges withconfidence and grace.

To the Class of 2020… We congratulate you on everything. Congratulations for finishing, congratulations on your experiences, congratulations on starting your future, and congratulations…and most of all Thank You so much for the chance to be a part of your lives. You have left marks on usall. We will move ahead treasuring the experiences you have brought to us. Daniel MastersChair, Department of International Studies
