HIGH HOLY DAYS5782

EMERGINGHayom harat ha-olam, we sing on Rosh Hashanah. Today the world stands at birth. When, however, centuries ago, the authors of the Mahzor (High Holy Days prayer book) declared,“Hayom—TODAY—the world stands at birth,” they are reminding us that each year God grantsus the opportunity to begin again. Every year we can experience the blessing of re-birth.

NEW EYES AS RE-BIRTHBirthing is a powerful metaphor: 2,300 years ago, Plato famously compared the exercise ofphilosophy to emergence from a cave. While those trapped within the cave’s walls mistakenlyaccepted their limited vantage point as all-encompassing truth, the philosopher, according toPlato, uses math and science to gain knowledge and wisdom. Through study, the philosopherunchains herself, exits the cave and sees the world in its fullest.

The rabbis of the Talmud tell a similar story of re-birth, though, the Talmud perceives knowledgeof Jewish Law and Jewish mysticism as the path to renewal. Hiding from the Romans, RabbiShimon bar Yochai spends twelve years in a cavern. The prophet Elijah then appears to him toannounce the death of the emperor, and the consequent annulment of the death sentenceagainst the rabbi.

NEW EYES, OLD WAYSWhen he emerged, Rabbi Shimon saw people occupied with business to the neglect of the Torah.Shooting destructive lasers from his eyes, Rabbi Shimon angrily smote the townspeople by hisglances. A heavenly voice then ordered him to return to the cavern. He remained twelve monthslonger. We then learn that the longer stay in the cavern increased Rabbi Shimon’s knowledgeof Judaism greatly. He emerged to purify the city of Tiberias and teach his knowledge of Torahand mysticism to his disciples. After isolation, Rabbi Shimon emerges to transform the world.

NEW EYES, NEW WAYSLike the philosopher and Rabbi Shimon, we too experienced the isolation of the proverbialcave. Thanks to the vaccine, our healthcare professionals and those who sacrificed for thegreater good, most of us can prudently and cautiously re-emerge from our pandemic quarantine.Certainly, we must continue to protect the vulnerable, including children and the immuno-compromised. But for those who can, this High Holy Days season will help us overcome thethreat to life and well-being, the corollary fear and complacency, and come together in personfor the first time in way too long. The year 5782 opens a new chapter for us as individuals andas a community to gather in person again. Let us see the world with new eyes. Please God,may this New Year bring us all health, joy, success, and blessing…together.

Hayom harat ha-olam, we sing this Rosh Hashanah. Today the world stands at birth. Happybirthday, Earth, and happy re-birthday to us all.

With prayers for shanah tovah um’tukah,

Rabbi Aaron StarrRabbi Yonatan DahlenHazzan David PropisAssistant Cantor Leonard Gutman

Dear CSZ Family,

It’s certainly been a year like no other! Despite the challenges that wefaced in the past year, CSZ has not only survived, but thrived! There ismuch for which we are grateful: our immensely talented clergy who continue to inspire and comfort us throughout the most difficult of times;our dedicated team of administrative professionals who kept our office

operating in a remote capacity and enabled us to transition to an online format for ourservices and programs; and, most of all, you! You are Shaarey Zedek’s most valuableasset, and you kept us together as a congregation by participating in our online minyanand Shabbat services each week, by learning with our clergy, by taking part in our musicalprograms, and, most of all, by supporting one another.

I am warmed by the outpouring of support shown by our virtual gabbaim who did not miss adaily minyan since we moved to an online format last Spring, by our minyan leaders whostepped up to conduct services each and every week, by our many volunteers who gaveof their time by serving on committees and task forces to help us navigate through the year’scomplexities, and by the many congregants who made calls to others to comfort them aftera loss, to assist them with technology, or just to make a friendly connection.

As we look forward to the High Holy Days this year, we are thankful that we will be ableto come together in a way that will look a lot like how we celebrated prior to the pandemic.Although some things may still be a little different for a while longer, if the current trendscontinue, I assure you that we will be together in our sanctuary. For those who are able, please join me in celebrating this milestone by physically attending an upcoming Shabbatservice, a T.G.I.S. on our William Saulson Pavilion, or one of our monthly Tot Shabbats.

I wish you all a New Year filled with health, happiness, and celebration!

Shana tovah,

Susan Kozik KleinPresident
