Our story as a sporting school has begun and looking back on our first official sporting events as a College I couldn’t be happier with the start that we have made. From Moggill to Shorncliffe (and just about everywhere in between) the ATC Cricketers both looked the part in their wonderful new uniforms and played the part with strong results and great individual and team perfor-mances. My congratulations to all involved and to Josh Cannane in particular who can lay claim to the very first ever Hat Trick for Ambrose Treacy College!! I would like to thank Mr Brett Henschell and our talented cricket coaches and dedicated teaching staff for an organised and energetic start to the season.

Our Water Polo players enjoyed two competitive games with our number one tea emerging victorious after a hard fought game and with new players and some ex-students joining in to bolster numbers, the program will continue to grow as we move for-ward. Speaking to parents, players and staff at various venues there was a great deal of excitement and energy about the season ahead. With many sports commencing this week and in the coming weeks, we are looking forward to very busy year of sport in 2015.

This week I challenged the boys to take ownership of their school and demonstrate that pride that they have in themselves, their mates and their College. The middle section of our College War Cry proudly states—We will not suffer, We will no rest, We wear our pride upon our chest. On the weekend and during the week it has been great to hear and see the boys showing their pride through the way they play, train and carry themselves and through cries of Gireba and go Brách during PE lessons, cricket games and trainings, water polo games, assemblies and even the odd Year 7 and 8 Religion lesson!

This Friday afternoon our swim squad will travel to Nudgee College to participate in the Br Miller Shield Meet with Nudgee Col-lege, Gregory Terrace and Brisbane State High. On Monday we also have over 30 of our swimmers heading to the West Taylor Bridge District Swimming Trials, which are both key events in our swimming calendar. I would like to wish Mr Paul Jones and our swimmers the very best of luck for both of these meets.

Team Sports at Ambrose Treacy College… This week we have released a the next month of cricket draw in the newsletter; please note that this is subject to change. As you will see, we are playing against a number of schools who NJC traditionally engaged with through various competitions. In Football, Rugby, Basketball, Tennis and Volleyball this year, our opposition will be a simi-lar combination of schools from across Brisbane and SE QLD. It is important that our community understands that as we grow we are not part of one sporting competition or association as a school. However, as you can see from our cricket draw there is certainly a large amount of interest from other boys Colleges in Brisbane and SE QLD in playing invitational games against ATC, which provides our sporting community with a wonderful framework through which our boys can play the sports they love.

The game they play in heaven…. we have had a few questions about the format of Rugby recently at the College. Boys in Year 5 to 8 will be playing interschool rugby (not club rugby) during Term 3, as well as the St Laurence’s Sevens on Saturday 20 June and the Spartans Rugby Carnival hosted by Ipswich Grammar during the June/July school holidays in preparation for the school rugby season in Term 3. Rugby pre-season begins in mid May with pre-season conditioning and then skill and team preparation for the holiday carnivals, which will be a great starting point for our school rugby season on Saturday mornings in Term 3.

In 2015 we have developed a great partnership with Wests Rugby to allow our Year 4 boys to play competitive Rugby. Further details are included in the newsletter below.

Clashes in timetabling… we have had many parents contact us about clashes in our co-curricular timetable. I spoke to the boys on assembly last Friday and assured them that they can attend one sport training session per week and skip one to attend band. They will not be penalised for this. We have asked boys to let their coaches know which sessions they will miss and to enjoy the balance of culture, music and sport in their lives. In the mighty 7B cricket team, Ben Mills-Ploughman is not only a gifted wicket-keeper and a formidable opening batsman, he also has the voice of an angel! On Tuesday mornings he will head to choir with Mrs McGeever and then on Wednesdays join myself and the 7B cricket team for a centre wicket. Busy boys are happy boys and we hope your son will enjoy the balance of activities that the College offers and the support of the staff involved.

Have a wonderful weekend of sport, I look forward to seeing you on a sideline or poolside this weekend.

Athletic Performance Coordinator —Luke Donatini [email protected]

Discipline and Courage—Taking Control of Your Outcomes Following on from last week, ‘Doing the little things right’; for success we need Discipline and Courage. Over many years I have reflect-

ed, read about, listened to, and asked many questions on ways of improving the sporting outcomes of athletes (male and female) that

I have worked with, coached and had the pleasure to be associated with. During my coaching career I have drawn on the knowledge

of many other coaches and sports men and women to assist myself in getting the best out of an athlete. One sportsman in particular

who has made an impact on me, my beliefs in taking control of outcomes, achieving greater positive outcomes, and greater levels of

success. This sportsman is Justin Langer. Within his book ‘The Power of Passion’, Justin Langer spells out some simple things that I be-

lieve hold the key to gaining success and taking control of your outcomes. Two words – Discipline and Courage. These two words hold

strong with me and something which I try and instill within the athletes that I coach and work with on a regular basis.

Justin Langer—The Power of Passion (p89 -91, Swan Sport 2002)

It takes discipline to look a man in the eyes rather than at his feet, his chest or the space above his shoulders.

It takes discipline to train when it is wet and cold, when all the others are at home behind the glass.

It takes discipline to tell the truth; remember it is as easy to tell the truth as it is to tell a lie.

It takes discipline to keep your eye on the ball, the ball symbolizing your vision and dreams.

It takes discipline to constantly work on the basics even when the basics get a little boring.

It takes discipline to practice under pressure so that nothing surprises you during the game.

It takes discipline to get out of bed early; there is nothing like a warm bed in the morning.

It takes discipline to keep running when your legs and lungs feel like they could burst.

It takes discipline to do the little things even if the y don’t seem important at the time.

It takes discipline to watch your manners, hold your tongue and respect your elders.

It takes discipline to do an extra lap when everyone else is in the showers or bar.

It takes discipline to stick with the recipe that you know works for YOU.

It takes discipline to guard against complacency, arrogance and laziness.

It takes discipline to look at the real reasons without making excuses.

It takes discipline to be the first on the training track and the last off it.

It takes discipline to make the right choice rather than the wrong one.

It takes discipline to be punctual, rather than just a few minutes late.

It takes discipline to fight back rather than quit.

It takes discipline to trust your game plan.

It takes discipline to switch off and relax.

It takes discipline to lead by example.

It takes discipline to listen and learn.

It takes discipline to say NO.

IT IS DISCIPLINE THAT WILL TAKE YOU TO THE TOP.

Not only do I firmly believe that all of the above points are, to a strong degree, pertinent to athletic/sporting success but also to the

success of the many things in our life (work, school, relationships etc). The Discipline to give it all a go and follow through with it and

the Courage to stick with it in both good and the not so good times whilst being true to yourself at all times.

I encourage all parents to read through the above points (outlined by Justin Langer) with their son/s.

Aquatics Coordinator —Paul Jones [email protected]

SWIMMING – The swimming program is in full operation and the attendance at training sessions has been excellent. We start

our competitive swim meets this week and look forward to some great results. We have had some changes to our school swim-

ming program compared to the school calendar. Please take note of the following dates.

Thursday 5th Feb – First ATC swimming club night and continues every Thursday night at 6pm. Everyone is welcome. You

only need to swim 25m to get involved.

Friday 6th Feb – Br Miller Shield swim meet at Nudgee College

Monday 9th Feb – West Taylor Bridge District Swim Championships at St Peter’s Lutheran College

Friday 27th Feb – Interhouse swimming carnival

Friday 6th March – ATC age Championships

Please note that from now to the ATC Age Championships, we have added a Tuesday morning training session for ATC students

only. We are using these sessions to build ATC team spirit as well as practice specific racing skills. The session runs from 6.45am

to 8am. This is an important session for our ATC competitive swimmers.

WATER POLO – The second half of our season started back last weekend with some outstanding performances from our boys.

ATC 1 had a tight match but ended with a strong 11 – 7 victory. Player of the day was Christian Bunn with some great defensive

efforts. ATC 2 which is made up of a lot of our younger boys and playing in an under 13 comp were playing against the strongest

team in the competition. They were able to turn defeat into victory as we challenged them to not have 30 goals scored against

them. They put up a massive effort in their defence and ended up going down by 19 – 0. We saw this improved effort as a victo-

ry for the development of these players. Outstanding efforts were put in by Sasha Haritonoff, Tyler Hoskin and Campbell

Wright.

CANOE POLO – Canoe polo is back in the pool with 2 year levels having the opportunity to be involved this term. Year 4 paddle

play is available on Saturday mornings from 10am and year 8 canoe polo is on Wednesday nights from 6pm. If you are interest-

ed in these activities, please contact Dave Capra [email protected] or Paul Jones [email protected] . This is a great

activity to experience different ways of using the pool.

LEARN TO SWIM and STROKE DEVELOPMENT

The ATC Learn to Swim and Stroke Development program offers quality coaching to members of the ATC Community as well as

the general public. There are still some spots left in our weekly program, please contact Fiona Kearney, ATC Swim School Coor-

dinator on 3878 0528 or via email at [email protected] to make a booking.

ATC Head Tennis Coach—Mr Bruce Dick [email protected]

After winning the Brisbane International Primary Schools Challenge we are looking forward to a big year of tennis in

2015. The program will get underway with pre-season training in preparation for the ATC Open Championships on

Sunday 29 March. Boys who wish to play in ATC school tennis teams in Term 2 must participate in this champion-

ships as it is a key part of our selections process.

The ATC tennis program is for boys who have played tennis before and are comfortable with fixtures, scoring and

umpiring. Boys who are keen to learn to play tennis for the first time are encouraged to contact Lifetime Tennis to

organize lessons.

Year 5—8 Training Monday, Tuesday and Thursday mornings 6.30am to 7.45am @ Ambiwerra Tennis Centre

Parents are to drop their sons at Ambi at 6.25am and they will be bussed back to ATC for

the start of the school day. Boys can shower and change into uniforms at Ambi and then

have breakfast once they are back at school.

Year 4 Training Tuesday and Thursday mornings 6.45am to 7.50am @ ATC

Boys can shower and change into school uniforms at the pool and then have breakfast

before school commences.

Training begins on Monday 2 March for Year 5 and 8 and Tuesday 3 March for Year 4 boys. I will be coming to speak

to boys about our tennis program on Friday 20 February and will collect the names of boys who are interested in

playing competitive tennis for ATC at this time. After our school season in Term 2, there will be ongoing opportuni-

ties for boys to represent ATC in tennis, both locally and at tournaments in Central and SE QLD.

Lifetime Tennis

Lifetime Tennis has recently launched its Ambiwerra Junior Masters series, a weekly tennis competition available for

students of all ages and standards. Matches run on a Saturday afternoon from 2-4pm at Lifetime’s Ambiwerra cen-

tre. The AJM match format is perfect to give Ambrose Treacy students a head start on their school tennis season.

We haven’t forgotten about parents out there either. The Spring Hill Tennis courts now host adult social fixtures

every Monday and Thursday night from 7-9pm. Sessions consist of a coaching lesson followed by organised social

match play. For all information please call (07) 3716 0077 to speak to one of our friendly staff or call our Fixtures

Coordinator, Luke, on 0449 745 992.

Cricket Coordinator — Mr Brett Henschell [email protected]

Saturday marked the first occasion where Ambrose Treacy College participated in scheduled cricket fixtures against other schools. To top off this first, ATC won 8 of the 11 matches played against Brisbane Boys College, Toowoomba Prep and St Patrick’s College in Years 5 to 8. The 3 losses were by narrow margins and improvement in just a couple of areas would have seen these teams across the line. Year 4 teams played in the U10 Brisbane North junior club cricket competition with the 4As recording a big win and the B teams acquitting themselves well despite losses.

Notable performances were Josh Cannane in 5C White with a hat-trick despite his team going down and 7A for dis-missing Toowoomba Prep for 5 runs. Surely that’s a misprint Mr Behan. Well done to players, coaches, managers, parents and supporters on a great start to the season. All matches were played hard but in the right spirit. We look forward to lots of fun with our mates over the next eight weeks, along with some good cricket being played.

Training Session times:

Year 4 – Thursday afternoon

Year 5 & 6 – Tuesday afternoon and Thursday morning

Year 7 & 8 – Tuesday morning and Wednesday afternoon

Indoor Cricket – Tuesday afternoon and Friday morning

Cricket Intensives – Monday afternoon for boys of any Year group who may desire a little extra coaching (user pays system). All ATC teams play Nudgee College this Saturday in Round 2. These will be challenging matches and I look forward to seeing the boys in action and learning the results.
