Our first distribution with our fantastic new team went very well last month. Hopefully we are now reaching the majority of homes in Harworth, Bircotes & Styrrup, we will continue to leave supplies in a variety of places around the village for anyone not receiving one.

We were very pleased to have the opportunity to taste the food at The Blacksmiths Arms in Harworth this month. We enjoyed a lovely family meal on a Tuesday evening - their Steak and Curry night. My steak was cooked to perfection and incredibly tasty while my husbands curry was pronounced beautiful. The kids enjoyed their meals too including sponge puddings off the dessert menu! To find out more about what the Blacksmiths has to offer take a look at page 7 of this magazine.

At their meeting on 4 October members heard about plans for an inflatable Paintball Game on the Scrooby Road recreation ground for the half term. The Town Council will subsidise this, and members also agreed to donate a sum of £100 towards it, in order

to make it more affordable for families. There is also to be a “Get to Know your Councillors” event at Harworth/Bircotes Town Hall on 9 November from 10 am to 3 pm, when Bassetlaw Dis-trict Councillors will be on hand to answer any queries and give information about what is hap-pening in our local area. It will be possible to view the local development plans. Tea and coffee will be provided, and there will also be a free prize draw. 23 November is Road Safety Day, in conjunction with BDC and DHLO, also at our Town Hall. Plans for the practice kick wall on the Wimpey Estate now seem to be moving ahead, and it is hoped it can be achieved before the snow is on the ground, and in connection with this the Secretary told members she had recently received an award for A1 Housing’s Anti Social Behaviour Champion 2011, and felt this was an award for all the group, rather than as an individual.

There was concern expressed about plans to convert the old doctor’s surgery on Bawtry Road into a food delivery service, as it was felt that this was not a good place to site such a service, due to its close proximity to the homes of elderly people, and also right next to a bus stop. Members agreed that we are already more than well served with take-aways in the town, and this would create more rubbish, noise and anti social behaviour.

There was also discussion about recent flooding problems in the Beverley Road, and Festival Ave-nue area, due to blockages, and Severn Trent are, as usual, denying that there is a problem. Two members of the Committee recently completed a Food Hygiene course and both passed. This is a requirement for those undertaking duties in The Pantry coffee shop at the Town Hall. Although the police were unable to be in attendance at this month’s meeting, a report had been received and would be circulated to members. This will also be reproduced elsewhere in this magazine.

Other discussions centred around the annual Christmas lunch, and suggestions for a pantomime, and once again our very own Santa and his good lady agreed to take on this role once again. We had received lots of very good feed back about last year’s Santa’s Grotto, and it is hoped to even improve on that this year, by making some slight adjustments so that it all flows better. The next meeting of the group will take place on Tuesday 1 November 2011, starting at 10.30 am, at the Devonshire Road Community Centre. Everyone is welcome to come along, help us to make Harworth/Bircotes an even better place to live, and maybe make new friends and learn some new facts in the process. Refreshments are available and a raffle will usually take place. We would particularly welcome anyone from an ethnic minority, or younger people with fresh new ideas. So please come and join us. Village Ventures Village Ventures is the rural touring scheme run by Nottinghamshire County Council and tours professional performers and companies around the smaller venues of the County. The scheme is heavily subsidised by the Arts Council from the lottery.

You are not like the Other Girls Chrissy took place on October 15 at Harworth and Bircotes Town Hall A one act, one woman play devised and performed by the award winning Caroline Horton, and it was so funny. She is touring it nationally following its opening at the Edin-burgh Festival. The Play was a tribute to her grandmother, a myopic Parisian, who met a tongue tied lad from Cheadle in Staffordshire and the dramas of living through the Second World War in occupied Paris and trying to make the journey to Angleterre to finally get married were played out with great amusement. She created such a great atmosphere that after the play most of the audience got another drink and remained in the hall for another hour! The hall looked fantastic, set up café style to fit the Parisian setting.

RESONANCE – HARWORTH AND BIRCOTES TODAY’S MUSIC SECTION INTERVIEW: Unicorn Hunters

In 2008 a bloke named Tim Smith from an amazing band called the Cardiacs had a stroke... he is still in recovery and, as you would expect, his combo have been inac-tive since. Dr Clausius stated in the first law of thermodynamics that ‘energy can neither be created nor destroyed and can only be transferred’ (science geek). Is it possible that on the day of his stroke that energy was emitted from Tim and was soaked up by some lucky recipients? If this is the case I think the Unicorn Hunt-ers might have absorbed their fair share of the goods; surely they weren’t born with these musical gifts, or were they?

The local 3 piece have a great approach to music that focuses on groove and power. Jaz and Deano’s guitars are precise and gritty and Oli’s drums pummel you to within an inch of your life. Their songs are insane compositions of melody, fast, slow, quiet, loud, up, down, backward, forward, in, out and shake it all about. The vocals dance around the guitar and the only word that can be used to describe the lyrics is.... well ...erm... mental (‘Worksop Bruce Lee’, need I say more?). I spoke to frontman Jaz briefly on the phone as the band prepared for their headline gig scheduled for 19th November 2011 at the Blacksmiths Arms.

What are you up to at the moment? Lots of song writing and gigs. We’ve just done some recording at a studio in Leeds and we’re hoping to do some more in the next 6 months. One of the songs we recorded in Leeds was played on Radio Sheffield a couple weeks ago.

How did you get together? Oli and Deano were in my brother’s band and I stole them from him to start the Unicorn Hunters.

Who are your influences? Led Zeppelin, Foo Fighters, Queens Of The Stone Age, Nirvana, Them Crooked Vultures.

How do you write songs? We simply jam ideas until we get a good vibe and then a song forms from that.

I’d describe you as riff monsters. What would you say to someone who hasn’t heard your music? If you like loud drums and fast guitars...you will like us. Don’t miss the Unicorn Hunters at the Blacksmiths Arms on Saturday 19th November 2011.

RECENT ARRESTS/PRPOSECUTIONS 2 Males from the Harworth area appeared at Nottingham Crown court on 21/9/2011 where they both pleaded guilty to Possession with intent to supply a controlled drug of Class B - Cannabis on 13/01/2011 One Male received a Community Order for 12 months with 100 hours unpaid work. One Male received 12 months imprisonment, suspended for 18 months. Community Order, 280 hours unpaid work.

DISPERSAL AREA IN HARWORTH ESTATE Nottinghamshire Police in consultation with Bassetlaw Council have extended the Dispersal or-der in the Wimpey Estate in Harworth. Backed by Bassetlaw District Council, Police officers and PCSOs have been given powers to disperse groups congregating on the estate which has been extended until February 2012.

If a Police Officer or Community Support Officer has reasonable grounds for believing that the presence or behaviour of a group of two or more people within the zone has resulted or is likely to result in any members of the public being intimidated, harassed, alarmed or distressed they have the power to do the following :-

Direct people in a group of two or more to leave the area either immediately or at a stated time and in a stated way. Direct people who do not live in the area to leave and not to return for a specific period.

Anyone failing to comply with directions issued under the order may be prosecuted under the Anti-Social Behaviour Act, which can result in up to six months in prison or a fine up to £5,000.

SAFER NEIGHBOURHOOD GROUP From the Recent Safer neighborhood Meeting held on October 11th 2011 the 3 local priorities have been identified from feedback received from the community by the priority survey forms regarding issues of greatest concern and issues the public wanted the safer Neighborhood Team to tackle. The three local priorities have been identified as :-

Priority 1: Anti Social Behavior Priority 2: Burglary (Dwelling, Shed) Priority 3: Vehicle Nuisance

M ayflower Animal Sanctuary, Narrow Lane Bawtry

The months are flying by and it wont be very long to Christmas. We are already arranging our Christmas street collections in Doncaster which will take place on the 11th and 18th of Dec. If anyone has a few hours to spare please call us we

would be pleased of the help. We also have a bag pack at Marks and Spencer's on the 24th Dec again if anyone has finished their Christmas shopping and baking could they also lend a hand.

October saw our annual Sponsored Dog Walk in Bawtry Forest. What a beautiful day. It didn’t look very promising weather-wise at first but somehow it turned out to be glorious. There were 55 dogs with their owners who did both a 2 mile walk and a 4 mile walk. It was really lovely to see so many of our rescue dogs there with their new owners. Everyone was ready for a cup of tea and a cake when they had finished. The cakes were yummy and I would like to thank everyone that had a hand in cake making for the day. The walk usually raises around £2000 so watch this space for a final figure.

Maria and Alan Bland did an amazing sponsored walk, with their rescue dog Chip. They walked from Kiveton Park to West Stockwith along the canal. It took them one and half days and they raised an amazing £915 . What a fantastic achievement. Well done all of you.

We have had the usual amount of dogs and cats brought to us for various reasons over the past month. We are still getting dogs tied to our gate at the bottom of the drive. People are also still dumping kittens on building sites and in fields. It’s upsetting to think about how many are not found and just die a cold lonely death.

We hope everyone remembers how upsetting it is for our animals as Bonfire Night draws near. Please take care of your cats make sure they are indoors and keep your dogs inside where it is safe with a radio on if your animal is particularly nervous .

May I have a little moan? I class myself as a responsible dog owner who always takes a poo bag out with me when I walk my dog and use it for what it was intended for. Why oh why do I see full poo bags in hedge bottoms and on public footpaths? Do many people not get the concept, you pick it up and put it in a litter bin. There is no wonder dog owners get a bad reputation.

Please remember we always need dog chews clean blankets and towels for the winter months especially.

Rossington Hall Riding for the Disabled We are based at the Northern Racing College near Bawtry, Doncaster. We are a small group with 5 horses which are used to give Disabled adults and children riding lessons on a weekly basis. We have approx 60 clients riding every week with all forms of disabilities. We have approximately 20 volunteers and two riding instructors. All of the volunteers are unpaid and volunteer because we all think it is a worthwhile cause. We are self sufficient and receive no financial help from RDA national.

We have been robbed 4 times this year. This time they took our field cleaning tools, self wa-tering water troughs and Hay out of the storage shelter. All in all over this year we have had over £1,000 worth of equipment stolen which we have had to replace out of our funds which are either donated or we have to fundraise for. We are devastated that we have been targeted yet again and wonder if the people who are doing this realise that they are taking enjoyment away from disabled people who love to come and ride the horses on a weekly basis.

We always in need volunteers who have a few hours a week to spare. You do not necessarily have to have experience of horses as we also need people to help with admin, hat fitting and sidewalking. If you can assist us at all please contact Sharon on 01302 759129

So NOW is the time to get lit up for the dark winter nights ahead. By making sure your home is well lit, you could avoid the nasty experience of coming home to a break in. Burglaries in Nottinghamshire have been reduced in recent months, but we must not become complacent Most burglars are opportunists just looking for a weakness in your security, and a house in darkness is a weakness. It tells a thief that there is no one at home and they won’t be seen committing the crime. And they never take a day off. So, with the onset of the darker nights get switched on to crime prevention. Automatic time switches are cheap to buy and easy to use. They will turn your indoor lights on BEFORE you get home, but just make sure your change the times regularly as the days get shorter. Outdoor security lighting is a good deter-rent. It can be set to come on automatically when it gets dark or to come on when anyone approaches. Ensure that gates giving access to the rear of your property are locked, particularly after dark, and don’t leave tools or ladders that can be useful to a thief lying around. Lock them in your shed or garage.

Keep your garden shed locked. Sheds are a favourite easy target for thieves. Just think how much it would cost to replace all the items stored in the average garden shed And use a good, strong lock. If your shed has a window, put up a curtain so a thief cannot see what is inside. Fit bars to the window. It’s also a good idea to chain all the larger items together (it makes them much more difficult to carry away) and then fasten the chain to the floor. Cut back any overgrown shrubs and bushes. Thieves don’t like being seen and overgrown bushes provide a welcome hiding place. Make sure all your windows are closed and, preferably, locked, especially all the downstairs windows and windows above a flat roof. Don’t leave car keys and handbags on hall tables. They are the first things an opportunist will take. Car keys can also be hooked through the letter box and your car stolen. Property mark all your valuables using a UV marker pen. It is difficult to sell property marked in this way and if it is stolen it makes it easier for police to return it to its rightful owner if recov-ered. The pens only cost a few pence.

It’s simple advice, but it’s advice that can

dramatically reduce your chances of becoming the victim of a very upsetting burglary.

P OPPY APPEAL 2011 This year sees the 90th anniversary of the Royal British Legion, but unlike many 90 year olds we get busier and busier.

Over 10.5 million ex servicemen & their dependents can seek help from the Legion and it is not generally known that we are there for the families as well as the veterans. Sadly the last few years have seen a rise in the numbers seeking our help with the Afghanistan and Iraq conflicts as well as all those who have served us so faithfully during previous conflicts. How many people remember those who have served in Korea, Malaya and Northern Ireland, we are there for them too – there has only been one year since 1945 when our troops have not been involved in a conflict.

Some of the things we can provide are activity holidays for older children of those serving abroad, the bereaved and the injured. We have trained personnel to accompany bereaved families to inquests, very distressing for all those involved. Holiday homes, nursing homes, help for those leaving the forces, the elderly, the injured, the list is endless.

So please when you buy your poppy remember how many people you will be helping. Wear it with pride, encourage everyone you know to do the same – we need your support. An update from Tickhill & District Lions As winter draws closer and the days shorter we can all look forward to the upcoming events that will be sure to put a smile on your face in November and over the Festive season.

As reported last month, we kick things off as usual with our Bonfire and Fireworks night at The Oak pub which this year is on Saturday 5th November. The bonfire will be lit at 5.30pm with two fireworks displays; one at 6pm and the grand finale at 6.45pm. Entrance is free but donations are encouraged!

As usual over the festive season we’ll also be selling raffle tickets for our Grand Christmas Draw with fantastic prizes; 1st prize: Kindle 3G e-reader, 2nd prize: Wilfreda city break for two, 3rd prize: £100 Food Hamper, 4th prize: £100 fuel voucher, 5th prize: 15lb Turkey. Plus there are lots of other prizes too! Tickets will be on sale in many shops around the area (look out for the posters) and the draw will be made at 9pm on the 13th of December at The Travelers’ Rest pub in Tickhill.

Finally just to give you early warning of the date when Santa’s Sleigh will be visiting. He will be in the Harworth area on Monday 12th December from 5.30pm when our smiling (and very fit) Lions will be trotting alongside to collect your kind donations and wish you a very merry Christmas.
