W elcome to the December edition of HARWORTH HARWORTH & BIRCOTES TODAY& BIRCOTES TODAY.

Another edition where I have struggled to find enough space to meet demand, but I think I have managed to fit everything in!

I can’t believe that I am already producing the December magazine—how this year has flown by.

The next edition will be distributed to you over the New Year period. Please ensure that anything that you would like to be included in it is with me by Friday 9th December. As always December will be a very busy month for me, with all the extra Christmas activities that go hand in hand with having 3 children, so your assistance with ensuring that this deadline is met would be appreciated.

Wishing you and your families a very happy Christmas and a peaceful new year.

Best Wishes, Paula

A Message from The Reverend Jackie Johnson

As many of you know, I have recently been quite unwell and had to take several weeks off work. I apologise for

being unable to provide the usual article for the magazine for the last two months, but I am sure you understand.

May I take this opportunity to thank those who have sent kind thoughts, prayers, flowers and cards during my extended period of sickness. I promise that although I am not ‘working’, the community has been very much in my thoughts and prayers. Indeed, although I could not personally officiate at the Armistice and Remembrance Day Services, I did wish to ensure that the person leading the worship was someone who knew the community and who was known by the community, since these were such very important services. I contacted The Reverend Irene Tissington, formerly our curate here at All Saints, and thank her for stepping into the breach.

Thanks also to the Church Wardens, our Assistant Warden and all those who have kept the show on the road in my absence.

Also, on behalf of the church and indeed the whole community, may I also thank Steve Bowman and staff of the Town Council for the ongoing work to the Church grave yard. The responsibility for its upkeep fell to Bassetlaw District Council several years ago when it was closed to burials. Sadly, much of the grave yard had become overgrown. Trevor, James, Walter and probably others’ whose names I don’t know have worked so hard on this task and it is quite remarkable to see the massive difference they have made. Thank you again.

Since this message is being written at the beginning of November, (whilst I am still off work), I am unable to give full details of our Christmas services and events. But please do keep an eye open for the adverts and posters, and come along to church to welcome the Christ-child into our hearts and homes once more. You can be assured of a warm welcome at all our events.

And on behalf of all who worship at All Saints Church, may I offer our heartfelt good wishes for the season, and a prayer that you will have a peaceful and blessed Christmas.

With love, thanks and Christmas Greetings From The Reverend Jackie Johnson

H ARWORTH AND BIRCOTES TENANTS’ AND RESIDENTS’ ASSOCIATION

Once again the numbers were down at the monthly meeting of the group. Although two of our members were welcomed back after undergoing surgery and treatment for cancer.

It was mentioned that a group of people living on the Wimpey Estate had complained to a Town Councillor about A1 Housing, and had a list of complaints. This is in spite of the fact that we regularly advertise the work that we do and our efforts to liaise between tenants and A1 Housing. The entire Wimpey Estate had been leafleted last year inviting everyone to come to our meetings, which are only once a month, and also informing everyone about our advice surgery every Tuesday afternoon. We are well placed to help and advice when any tenant has a problem, but they should not be complaining to a Town Councillor, when we are in a better position to know who to contact to solve any problems. It’s easy to complain, but if these complainants will not come to the right place, we cannot help them. So, anyone on the Wimpey Estate reading this, take notice. We can, and often do, help. If you cannot get to our meetings, or our advice surgery, you can also come along to our Pantry Coffee Shop at The Town Hall, every Thursday morning from 10 am to 12 noon.

The Committee had been approached by a young man who is wanting help securing funds to start up a Street Dance Studio in the Town, which he believes could help to keep young people on the right track. He is a local lad, who made the choice to channel his energy and aggression into street dance, and now travels extensively all over the world, meeting such acts as Diversity. Our group are keen to help him as one of our main concerns is combating anti social behaviour, by finding activities to hold their interest.

Members were told of a range of things which are planned, some of which include planters and bike racks for the paved area in front of the shops, to deter those people who think it is alright to park there, risking injury to the elderly and young children alike. There could also be some im-provements to the junctions along Scrooby Road, by adding planters on the corners. There will be more hanging baskets, which will be sourced locally.

They were also told of a meeting between Town Councillors, the dog warden and a senior manag-er from Bassetlaw District Council Environment Services, when it was stressed that the Town Councillor wishes to see the area targeted in order to catch those who do not clean up after their dogs, and fines being issued when caught, as it is believed that by hitting them where it hurts (i.e. in their wallet), is the best deterrent. Likewise, fly-tipping will also be targeted, as it is costing a lot of money to clean up after the tippers. There had recently been an incident where a gas main had almost blown close to the motorway after rubbish tipped there was set alight.

It had been noticed that the footpath from Saxon Way and the one from the bottom of Beverley Road up towards Scrooby Road, had been tarmaced. This could be as a result of our hard work at getting the footpath made a public right of way. Members agreed that this was a good job done.

Members were reminded that the Christmas Lights event takes place at the Town Hall on Thursday 1 December, when we will have a usual successful Tombola Stall, and will be hosting Santa’s Grotto once more.

There was mention of a new non emergency number, 101. The 0300 number will be phased out until 9 January 2012, and the new non emergency number went live on Monday 7 November 2011. It can be used for such things as reporting a car stolen, property damaged, suspected drug use or dealing, minor traffic collision, or information about crime.

The next meeting of the group will take place on Tuesday 6 December 2011, starting at 10.30 am, at the Devonshire Road Community Centre. Everyone is welcome to come along, help us to make Harworth/Bircotes an even better place to live, and maybe make new friends and learn some new facts in the process. Refreshments are available and a raffle will usually take place. We would particularly welcome anyone from an ethnic minority, or younger people with fresh new ideas. – so please come and join us.

The Festive Season is almost upon us and many of us will be going out to parties or to the pub with friends, but if you are going out this Christ-mas and are likely to have a drink, please leave the car at home.

Because if you don’t, a round of drinks could cost you a great deal more than a headache and a hangover the next morning In fact, drink driving could cost you a lot more than you think: A court conviction. A driving ban of at least 12 months. An endorsement on your licence for 11 yrs. A criminal record. If you get caught drink driving, this is the mini-mum that will happen to you. You may also be liable for a fine of up to £5,000 and up to six months in prison. In addition, there are the every day conse-quences of being caught drinking and driving. To understand those consequences, you’ll have to use your imagination. For a start, you’ll have to rely on friends and family to drive you where you need to go. For even the most basic trips – to the supermarket or taking the kids to school – you’ll be depend-ent on the local bus service or taxis. You may have to sell your car to pay the fine – or watch it rusting away for 12 months. Imagine having to find a new job. You won’t be able to drive to work or drive for work. Many employers refuse to hire people with criminal records and you will have to explain your criminal record at every job interview. And don’t think, “It won’t happen to me.” Every

year around 100,000 drivers who thought they could get away with it are caught. The police are trained to spot all the tricks drink drivers use to avoid being caught. They can ask you to take a breath test if they suspect you have been drinking or if you commit a traffic offence while driving. You may think you are in control of the car, but even the smallest amount of alcohol affects your ability to drive safely. You will have slower reactions and a reduced field of vision. Alcohol affects your judgement of speed and distance and leads to over confidence and increased risk taking – increasing the danger to all road users, including yourself. And there are alternatives. Book a taxi. And to make sure you get one, don’t leave it until the last minute. It you must take the car, agree at the start of the night who is driving and not drinking. Use public transport. It’s much cheaper than a fine and a driving ban. If you’re at a friend’s house, stay overnight. Don’t get into a car driven by someone you know has been drinking. And don’t forget the morning after. Don’t rush to get behind the wheel. You might feel fine, but you could still be over the legal alcohol limit or unfit to drive. And remember, a cold shower, a cup of coffee or any of the other myths about sobering up won’t make you fit to drive any quicker. Time is the only thing that will get the alcohol out of your system. There really is no excuse for drinking and driving at any time of the year.

own rescue, feeling that something had to be done to help the plight of unwanted and abandoned cats and kittens. Having volunteered in animal rescue for many years they knew first hand what a rocky road it would be but this did not deter them.

All cats are vaccinated, neutered/spayed etc, consequently vet bills are a constant drain upon the charity’s resources. Fund raising is such hard work but most Sundays you will find Jackie and Jason up at the crack of dawn, car filled to bursting, off down the road to the local car boot. Needs must as they say……as with all rescues, that need is great and on going.

The cattery is bursting at the seams with unwanted cats and kittens as the recession continues to bite. There is literally no room in the cattery out-side so Jackie and Jason have set up cages in their living room and spare bedroom to accommodate the ever increasing number of homeless animals. Both work full time but still manage to run the rescue single handed, such is their dedication to the animals in their care. Over the past three years 230 cats and kittens have been successfully rehomed. Can you help by offering a home or donation? Donations of food, toys, car boot items etc. are always welcome.

Could you spare a few hours to help with fundrais-ing? If you can help in any way please call Jackie Tovey on 07737205938 or visit the website at www.scfrescue.co.uk Thank you.
