Mary MacKillop Medals for Excellence and Achievement To help our community learn more about St Mary MacKillop and to promote her strong commitment to education, the Mary MacKillop Medal is awarded annually to Year 12 students at their Mass for Graduation and Ceremony. These Awards are for exceptional student achievement, requiring excellence and consistency in every course (or closest to), for Years 7 to 12. There are two categories for the medal. Dressed By Vinnies Day On 29th October the College held Dressed by Vinnies Day, donning clothes purchased from a Vinnies shop. By promoting the virtues of shopping at Vinnies, we are helping to support our community and shopping sustainably by recycling and reducing waste. The profits from every purchase in a Vinnies shop goes towards assisting over 40,000 Western Australians who turn to Vinnies each year as they struggle through tough times, by funding our mental health, emergency assistance, financial counselling, housing, accommodation and youth services. It was wonderful to see the College staff and students involved and showcasing some fabulous outfits. We raised over $600 to buy gift cards to add to our Christmas Appeal, enhancing a ‘family in need’ Christmas. Our prize winner, who looked absolutely fabulous, is Year 7 student, Aylah Moore. Thank you to everyone who supported this worthy cause. You are really going to make a difference to someone’s life. Mrs Janice Bell Campus Ministry

Language Perfect World Championships

Participating in the 2019 Languages World Championships was a wonderful experience that gave me a deeper understanding of the structures of different languages and an insight into various cultures around the world. This year, we managed to attain 100,326 points, resulting in our first Elite Award Certificate. We ranked in the top 0.2% in the world, taking points from 10 different languages. We are so proud of the efforts of everyone who participated and are really excited to compete again in 2020. We would like to thank all Languages participants and Mademoiselle Harrison for enrolling us to compete and look forward to the next World Series. Brenda Joseph - 2019 WA Young Person of the Year

The College congratulates Brenda Joseph (Amito), Year 11 Dunlea B, for her outstanding achievement of being recognised as the 2019 WA Young Person of the Year for her work training multicultural AFL Football umpires. The WA Youth Awards recognises and rewards young people and organisations for their achievements and contributions to the WA community. Brenda won The Commissioner for Children & Young People Participate Award receiving a $1,000 cash prize, following nomination by Mr Daniel Sherifi, Youth Programs Coordinator at the Edmund Rice Centre WA. Brenda has received a pair of around-the-world plane tickets, in addition to a $10,000 travel bursary to support travel around regional Western Australia, to participate in youth related events and activities as Western Australia’s Youth Ambassador. Brenda migrated to WA from Uganda in 2007 and founded the Edmund Rice Centre WA (ERCWA) Multicultural AFL Football Umpiring Academy in 2017, at age 14 years. Brenda was instrumental in developing the academy including arranging and running development camps, training sessions and umpiring games. In the development camps, Brenda took full charge of the administrative duties including organising course material, conducting assessments, developing food menus and overseeing the volunteers. Brenda takes full charge of the training and development requirements of the umpires by running regular training sessions and providing on the ground mentoring during umpiring events. The academy has developed more than 60 umpires from culturally and linguistically diverse backgrounds - securing opportunities to umpire at Little League and Auskick games at Optus Stadium, Public Schools' Association games and amateurs' football games with the WA Football Commission. Youth Minister Peter Tinley presented the award to Brenda at the WA Youth Awards Ceremony at the State Theatre Centre on Friday, 25th October. Mr Tinley commented that Brenda has empowered a generation of multicultural youth to take control of their futures and feel part of a multicultural Australia.

Congratulations Brenda on your outstanding achievements. Mrs Daphne Peters Religious Education Teacher
