But there is melessness to that discussion on priories all those years ago and the wisdom that it taught us. When we face the future and are troubled by those anxiees, ask yourself—where is my focus? Seek first the kingdom of God and His righteousness, and all the rest will take care of itself. In so many ways, we could say that our me here at Seaside was the crowning assignment in our careers. But we would rather focus on the ways that Gods work has taken place in this place and, in turn, has brought glory to God. As we change roles here and move into rerement, we do so with that same expectaon for the future and hope for you. Whatever role we have played in making Seaside what it has become, we freely offer back to God and to your pastoral leaders that come aſter us as we seek to become that Vital community, encountering Jesus Christ, and living abundantly through service to God and neighbor. ”* And may the peace of Christ be with us all. Reflecting on a Decade of Ministry What can we say after ten years? We suppose that we could recite a summary of accom-plishments. Or perhaps express our hopes and dreams for the future. We could lament what might have been had not the harsh realities of cancer not inserted themselves into our lives and placed an unexpected time limit on our work here together. Or maybe better still, a reflection on what we have learned together and the wisdom that has come to shape us…and you. In his Sermon on the Mount, Jesus offers us an extended section on worry—about the trap-pings of this life (what we shall wear) about daily sustenance (what we shall eat), and about the future. He reminds us of how God provides even for the birds of the air and the lilies of the field, but he concludes with a word that is almost haunting: “But seek first the kingdom of God and His righteousness, and all these other things will take care of them-selves” (Matthew 6:33, Scott’s translation). As we look back over our ten years at Seaside, we would each peg the moment when things made the significant positive change that helped Seaside become what we are today. It was at a Church Council meeting in the early Fall. We had been here a couple of years already as your pastors and we had already spent a lot of that time watching, listening and reflecting on our life together. Coming out of the “Great Recession” had been difficult for Seaside as it had been for a great many congregations. Money was tight. We were a knot of anxiety de-fined by lots of questions that began, “what if…” But as budgeting season approached that year, the church council had a frank discussion about priorities. Why are we here? What brings people to Seaside? How do we do ministry with them? And how should that be re-flected in our budgeting? We began looking forward into God’s future with hope rather than into our future shaped by the anxieties of the past. We began seeking the kingdom and His righteousness. And guess what…all the rest took care of itself. Since that change in focus, we’ve consistently met our budgets, paid the mortgage and the light bill, provided for our neighbors in need and expanded our outreach. God is good. It would be easy to face this transition with anxieties about the future. There are a lot of unknowns out there—for us and for you. But there is timelessness to that discussion on priorities all those years ago and the wisdom that it taught us. When we face the future and are troubled by those anxieties, ask yourself—where is my focus? Seek first the kingdom of God and His righteousness, and all the rest will take care of itself.” In so many ways, we could say that our time here at Seaside was the crowning assignment in our careers. But we would rather focus on the ways that God’s work has taken place in this place and, in turn, has brought glory to God. As we change roles here and move into retirement, we do so with that same expectation for the future and hope for you. Whatever role we have played in making Seaside what it has become, we freely offer back to God and to your pastoral leaders that come after us as we seek to become that “Vital community, encountering Jesus Christ, and living abundantly through service to God and neighbor.”* And may the peace of Christ be with us all. A Caring Tip from Stephen Ministry “Sometimes people worry that mentioning the loss or even the name of the deceased will hurt the grieving person. Most of the time though, the knowledge that their lost loved one is still in other’s hearts can actually be a great comfort. We need to hear our loved one’s name. We need to tell and hear stories about him or her. We need to laugh and cry, sometimes at the same time. We need to say how

much we miss the one we love and hear how much others do too. So, Don’t hesitate to bring up memories of the person's loved one, whether days, months, or even may years after the loss. Doing so can be a powerful gift for grieving.”...Amity Haugk, Stephen Ministry St. Louis If you would like a Stephen Minister or know of someone who could benefit from a confidential ear and loving heart, please call Mary Ann at 910-231-5437 or Deb at 607-761-8451 for more information.

Greetings Seaside. It is a genuine honor and privilege to be writing this note to you as one of the next pastors to serve this great church. Having served many years in the old Wilmington Dis-trict and then as the Superintendent of the Harbor District, I am well aware of this church and the strong witness it makes for our Lord Jesus. Thank you for that! Gail and I look forward to being in ministry with you. In many ways I already feel connected with SUMC. Starting all the way back to Camille Yorkey I have been well acquainted with all of the minis-ters who have served this church with distinction. I first met Scott and Mary Jane while they were in their last year of Divinity School and our paths have continued to cross through the years. They have served this church with excellence and I am deeply appreciative of their ministry, especially over the past 10 years here at Seaside. As I write this, I have a contract waiting for me to sign for the rental property we have decided upon. I expect to be in the office on July 9 and my first worship service will be on July 14. Having the privilege of greeting you in person is truly a high honor for which I am deeply grateful. I know the task of learning names, recognizing faces and family connections is a daunting task but it will be one

which I embrace with joy in my heart. Thank you for the prayers that you have already been praying regarding this transition. Please continue to hold Scott and Mary Jane in your prayers and, as we turn our face toward the future God is about to roll out before us, may we be God’s willing servants and disciples. Still in One Peace,

    Francis

Hi Seaside Church! I feel so incredibly blessed by this opportunity to serve our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ with You. So where to begin? Perhaps, at my beginning 23 years ago…, when with holy reverence, I knelt at the altar and prayed, “God, show me what you would have me do with my life.” I never imagined He would answer me with a call to a life of service for God and the church as a disciple of Jesus Christ. In Eph. 4: 11-13, Paul writes, “the gifts He gave were…to equip the saints for the work of ministry, for building up the Body of Christ…” After that altar experience, I spent the next 16 years of my life doing just that with whatever gifts God gave me. I first saw Jesus in the eyes of women learning to read, and then later in the distant stares of

the homeless. I have always felt closest to God while on my knees serving. It took me a while to learn to do this out of the overflow. I also learned over time that to be on my knees was fine so long as I was in service and prayer with rather than for my brothers and sisters. I had the privilege of learning these lessons while serving as Director of Missions and Outreach for two large churches (UPUMC in Dallas, TX & WMSUMC in Greensboro) for a total of 16 years. I also have extensive non-profit experience that, combined with my work at West Market, has allowed me to witness God’s work in and among people, institutions, and organizations to accomplish His Justice and Righteousness in transformative ways. During this time, I received the call to ordained ministry, and have recently graduated from Duke Divinity School, and am on an Elder Tract for ministry ordination. I am currently serving as Interim Pastor of Glendale Heights in Durham. I feel so very humbled and blessed to serve my Lord, whom I love more than my life itself, in this way. Finally, I have two adult children, Kate and William, of whom I am very proud. Kate is a modern ballet dancer, and is studying at a conservatory outside NYC, and my son William, who lives and works in the city, is an investment analyst.

I also look forward to a fun time singing songs with our VBS and STARS children during June and July! So.....as you can see, we keep going strong during these summer months. In addition to all of this, Lynn, Janette and I will be planning music and events for the fall,,,,maybe at the beach?? With a voice of singing, Kathryn

It’s Time to Celebrate Scott & Mary Jane!!!!! Mark your calendars for Friday, June 21 as we will be gathering for a celebration in honor of Mary Jane and Scott and their decade of service to Seaside. Come to the Fellowship Hall between 5:00-7:30 PM for a casual time of greeting and appreciation for all they have done. We are asking that folks bring food to share. So, if your last names begins with A-L, please bring an appetizer. If your last name begins with M-Z, please bring a dessert. Plan to bring your food to the church that day by 4:00 PM so that it can be set out by our planning

For the fourth year, the Old Bridge Historical Society (formerly known as the Old Bridge Preservation Society) will be sponsoring Project PBJ. During the month of June, baskets will be available for people to donate peanut butter and jelly at multiple local businesses and nonprofits, including Seaside UMC! Last year during Project PBJ, over 750 pounds of peanut butter and jelly were collected and then donated for distribution to the Seaside United Methodist Church Food Pantry. Your donations are so important as during the school year many children get their main meal through the schools' free and reduced lunch program. When school is not in session it becomes more difficult for children to get nutritious food. Your

donations will help feed children. It is proven that good nutrition enables children to be strong and healthy learners. Please consider donating a jar of peanut butter and/or jelly to Project PBJ. You will make a difference in a child's life.

Additional Seaside Electronics Recycling Fair Scheduled for June 29 On April 13, the third SERF was held and was an overwhelming success – two 26’ recycling trucks were filled to the brim and people had to be turned away. By 10:30 there was no room in the trucks on that day for even one more battery or phone cord. Obviously this demonstrates that there is

great need in our community for an additional opportunity to recycle electronic goods. To meet this demand, a fourth SERF has been scheduled at the Seaside United Methodist Church on Seaside Road, Sunset Beach on June 29. This event will be held begin-ning at 9:00 a.m. and will continue until we are all out of space or noon, whichever comes first. Church members will not be able to drop off electronics to be recycled prior to the event as the shed is scheduled to be closed. If you wish to recycle your electron-ics, you must come on the morning of the event. SERF is a free community service but if you would like to donate food and/or money to support the Seaside Food Pantry, it would be gratefully accepted. If you have questions regarding what is acceptable to recycle during SERF 4, please call Southern Environmental Solutions of the Carolinas 704.272.0154; they will have all the answers.

Coming soon to a SUMC Fellowship Hall near you is the annual Country Fair Carnival. Country Fair is ramping up and we need you to make it happen. June 16, following each service, the Fellowship Hall will be in carnival mode. Come down to the Fellowship Hall and be a part of the festivities. Carnival snacks will be available, carnival music will put you in the mood, and play a game at the carnival and maybe even win a prize! Information on the new and improved Country Fair Fall Festival will be available, along with volunteers on hand to answer your questions. Check out the information tables for Silent Auction, Bakery, Books, Crafts, Food Events, Furniture and Appliances, Linens, Seasonal, Toys and Baby. You can sign up to be a part of a team. Although the fair isn’t until late October, volunteers are needed from July to October to help organize the event. Be a team member! Come and learn what event is best suited for you. We hope to see you there!

It’s here! Seaside Teaching and Reaching Students (STARS) will open the doors for 32 students on June 24th! STARS is an intensive six-week literacy and enrichment program. Students are rising 2nd and 3rd graders from Jessie Mae Monroe and Union Elementary Schools who are reading below grade level. The program runs Monday through Friday from 8:30 am to 4:00 pm, and on Monday afternoons it is extended to 7:00 pm in order to host a family dinner and workshop here at the church. What an amazing outreach ministry to our community! Each morning, students receive three hours of Balanced Literacy Instruction. They are taught by Master Teachers hired from the local schools, who are assisted by paid teaching assistants. In 2018, STARS participants showed no “summer slide” and students gained an average of two months reading growth. The Duke Endowment Rural Church team recognized that Summer Literacy Programs (SLPs) provide a much needed resource in communities. Research has shown that children who fall short of reading goals by the end of third grade are at greater risk for dropping out of high school and/or entering the justice system. The Duke Endowment (TDE) has worked with three churches, including Seaside, to provide the framework for the literacy program, partial funding, and research data to support expansion of the SLP program. In 2019, nine new SLP sites will be added at rural United Methodist Churches across the state. After lunch, students will experience a variety of enrichment activities designed to support their literacy growth and the needs of the whole child. Here’s a glimpse of what is planned:

STARS needs you! We still have lots of volunteer opportunities available. Check them out by visiting our website or call Meg Good at 579-5753. If you’d like to make a financial contribution, please note STARS in the memo line of your check payable to Seaside UMC or on your online contribution. STARS is offered at no cost to the students’ families. During these last weeks of preparation and throughout the summer, please continue to keep the students and their fami-lies, teachers, volunteers, and leadership for all summer programs in your prayers. Pray for God’s guidance, strength, and wisdom; safety and travel mercies; and nurturing and transforming experiences where God’s love is felt by all. …shine like STARS in the world (Philippians 2:15). And whatever you do, in word or deed, do everything in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God the Father through him (Colossians 3:17).

Thank you for your love and support!

Blessings, Barb Duclos STARS Site Director

The Garden of Disciples—A Work in Progress

“Let us not become weary in doing good, for at the proper time we will reap a harvest if we do not give up.” Galatians 6:9 Your patience is needed as the Garden of Disciples receives a refreshed look. Carolina Creations has begun work in the Garden. Overgrown plants will be removed and replaced with new ones; existing irrigation will be replaced; subsoil in planting areas will be hand excavated and replaced. All of this work takes time, so when you see the work in progress, visualize the final result and smile!
