TRANSCRIPT

“Have you Tried Rebooting?”

That’s a common question that I ask when someone comes to me with a computer problem. It seems silly, but anyone who has had much experience with computers has discovered the “miracle” of rebooting to fix a frustrating computer issue. The fact of the matter is that computers, like people, are incredibly complex. As complexity increases, so, too, does the opportunity for things to go wrong. A transistor doesn’t switch properly, one algorithm conflicts with another, or a tiny, obscure bit of code has a syntax error that the engineers missed. One error introduces a small drip (or even a cascade) of additional glitches, the computer slows to a crawl, and you contemplate which window through which you will hurl the frustrating device. Have you tried rebooting? Often as not, rebooting a computer can reset all the broken or disrupted processes.

I have never been one to make much over the turning of the calendar from December to January, but I have been thinking lately about rebooting. The year just past has been . . . well . . . complicated. I’m ordinarily active and healthy and have always been able to do pretty much what I wanted. But I write this sitting in a recliner just a bit more than three weeks after knee replacement surgery—and remembering that this wasn’t even my only surgery of the year! In 2016 Mary Jane’s father received a serious cancer diagnosis and is still undergoing treatments. And, as most of you know, we spent a month at the ICU bedside of our oldest son as he clung to life after a catastrophic work accident (he’s still recovering, but I’m glad to say that the long-term signs are positive). And we’re just one family. Many of you have faced as much or more than we. As the calendar changes to January from December, I roll that question over in my mind . . . “Have You tried rebooting?”

This is not to say that 2016 was an altogether bad year. I’m too optimistic to believe that any “year” is all bad. You—that is to say, our Seaside church family—have been amazing. As we have faced personal and family challenges, you have stepped up. The year just past has been one of the most successful in the 27-year life of our church as we have seen increases in membership, attendance, mission, and stewardship. The rain-delayed Country Fair ended up being a surprising success—though, all things considered, was it really a surprise? In spite of everything we face in life, God is Good. All the time.

So the calendar turns. For good or ill, the ball will drop in Times Square on New Year’s Eve. We do not know what 2017 will bring any more than we knew what would come in 2016. So it’s a good time to pause. Rest. Reflect. Repent. Embrace gratitude. Claim hope. To reboot calls us to each of these to one degree or another. The writer of Hebrews suggests that we “lay aside every weight and the sin which clings closely and run with perseverance the race that is set before us.” But most importantly, he reminds us to look to Jesus, “the pioneer and perfector of our faith.”

CELEBRATION February 3, 2017 – 7:30 PM

All are invited to attend this special Gathering and Celebration at First United Methodist Church, Myrtle Beach. If you’re interested in attending, please contact Betty Scott at [email protected]. If there is enough interest, we’ll arrange for the bus.

Seaside Emmaus has so much to celebrate! Come and bring your memories to share; hear some of the

great stories from past Walks. God has blessed this community abundantly. Reflect on how many lives have

been changed and how God has used those Fourth Day Experiences to grow

His Kingdom.

The United Methodist Men will hold their first meeting of 2017 on Monday, January 2nd, at 6:30 pm. The

Soaring Angels, led by Kathryn Parker, will be entertaining us. Come and enjoy the voices of these wonderful ladies as they perform patriotic songs to get our New Year started in a positive and uplifting spirit.

Updates will be provided on the results of the Christmas tree sales and the progress of ticket sales for the upcoming Greg Rowles Concert scheduled for February 25th.

We’re still looking for one of our members to step up and accept the challenge of serving as Vice President of UMM. Please prayerfully consider serving so all the officer positions are filled for 2017.

United Methodist Men are looking forward to another great year of fellowship and serving our church and community. We’re always looking for more men to participate by joining us at meetings and working on our projects. Consider bringing a friend or neighbor as a guest to our next meeting in January. They do not have to be a member of Seaside UMC to join our group as we welcome all members of our community.

A Word From Your Director of Formation,

People at Seaside often ask me, “What does ‘Formation’ mean anyway?” That is an excellent question! Over the past fifteen to twenty years, churches have begun to employ more and more Ministers or Directors of Formation. Is this a new ministry conceived of in the church? What is this “Formation” stuff all about anyway? Well, while the word “Formation” may be a shift in language, the

principle is really the same as good ol’ Christian Education or Discipleship. Those are the terms you may be more familiar with from your own church backgrounds, wherein you most likely had a Christian Education Committee, or Christian Education Minister. Basically, “Formation” and Christian Ed encompass the same ministry.

However, the move toward the phrase “Spiritual Formation” came about as we realized more and more that spiritual lives are not only shaped by our “education” of the Bible, but also by our experiences of the truths of the Bible. Intellectual pursuits of God are a vital and incredibly fun and challenging part of our faith. But we must also grow in our ability to move that information from a cerebral space to a home within our spirits. So as any good “Formation” pastor or director would tell you, the goal is to offer opportunities for education in the faith in ways that allow for movement from head to heart, from thinking to feeling, from theory to real life. Our goal is to help the Spirit shape you holistically, so that the word of God not only becomes alive to you, but also becomes your very source of Life.

In the months ahead, we will keep exploring this idea of “Spiritual Formation,” looking at history, different opportunities, and words from church fathers and mothers that continue to shape us today!

Happy New Year! Well, the holiday fanfare is winding (or has wound) down and it’s time for Seaside to

focus on . . . Country Fair. Yes, it’s 8 months away but so much of the work for September 15th and 16th is already underway. There have been some big changes and shifts in Country Fair personnel and we are looking for YOU join us as we work through these changes.

Change for 2017: Volunteers are asked to work in teams of 3 or 4 each Tuesday for a one month period of time during

donation time. Duties include taking merchandise from the shed to the storage units and picking up items at donor’s homes that have been scheduled for pickup that week.

As Seaside looks to the future of Country Fair, we are reminded that ALL of our success is due to incredible,

hardworking volunteers. We look forward to hearing from LOTS of our great Seaside members who want to be a part of the CF effort. 2016 REPORT The Outreach Committee would like to share the activities of the committee for the past year with the congregation. We would also like to express our sincere appreciation for the generous financial support which resulted from the proceeds of the Country Fair. Many people worked very hard in many different ways to support the wider community and to extend

Christian love and caring beyond Seaside's walls. Education is one of the most important areas that we are able to impact locally with our support. Through donations, the Outreach Ministry supported the following:

Brunswick Literacy Council to support of their literacy efforts and the BC Spelling Bee BCC Student’s Tuition via partnership with St. James the Fisherman Episcopal Church Communities in Schools and provided food for teacher appreciation week Seaside’s S.T.A.R.S. summer literacy program

Waccamaw School for program support; West Brunswick High School Booster Club Seaside’s Preschool Playground Sandbox Cover Project Wings School Backpack Program Providence Home emergency shelter for teens NC Methodist Summer Camps Contributed to Seaside’s new outreach, SFOS (Special Friends of Seaside) In support of adults and families, we made donations to the following: Brunswick Family Assistance Hope Harbor Domestic Violence Shelter

Brunswick Christian Recovery Center Brunswick County StreetReach Ministry CROP Walk for Hunger

Emergency support was provided in support of the MERCI Center , the UMC Rainbow Covenant and contribut-ed to Seaside’s Pastors Discretionary Fund.

It is our hope that the congregation will continue to support our choices of providing financial support to these worthy programs You are invited to provide input at any time to the Outreach Committee by contacting Ken Wensel at [email protected]. We look forward to your continued support at this year’s, Not Your Mama's Bake Sale this spring!

WBHS Boosters

At its last meeting, the Outreach Committee voted to make a donation to become boosters of West Brunswick High School Athletic Programs. Among the benefits are signs visible at all football, basketball, home baseball games, and wrestling matches. Seaside’s name is broadcast over the PA system during each game as a Booster. This donation puts us alongside our sister churches in the southern Brunswick County area supporting our young men and women in their athletic endeavors.

Another exciting benefit is four-season passes that are good to all regular season athletic events held at the high school. West's athletic programs are among the finest in the Eastern North Carolina section and you can take advantage of these passes by contacting Bob Bell at 910-579-3814 or e-mailing him at [email protected].

Getting to Know...Seaside’s Staff

Scott Wilson-Parsons Tell us about your childhood, places you’ve lived, education and family. Born Louisville, Ky., I lived just about 100 yards from the front gate of Churchill Downs. My family moved to Decatur, Ga. (East Atlanta) where I did all my schooling. I was an avid swimmer and water skier, played baseball, a little football and soccer, but excelled in wrestling until a career ending injury in my senior year. I was led to a relationship with God during the summer before my senior year and was baptized that fall. I went to Young Harris College in North Georgia, intending to major in English and journalism, but experienced a call to “some form of ministry” (probably teaching or counseling) during my first year at Young Harris. It was during this same time that Mary Jane and I began dating. I completed my baccalaureate degree in religion at LaGrange College in LaGrange, Georgia, where I was unexpectedly elected president of the Methodist Campus Ministry program (Wesley Fellowship). In that capacity, I introduced myself to the LaGrange District Superintendent of the UMC who promptly asked if I would be willing to serve a church east of LaGrange (actually, it was 3 churches!). I was 19 years old and stunned, but after much consultation with mentors and pastors, I agreed and, apart from a couple of years during seminary, I have been a pastor ever since. Since 1981, I’ve served in three annual conferences, 21 years of which have been in North Carolina. Mary Jane and I have two children, boys, 10 years apart. The oldest, Wesley, is a Civil Engineer near Williamsburg, VA; the youngest is a Software Engineer in Raleigh. What are your day-to-day duties? I won’t bore folks with the answer to that, exactly, but rather make some general observations: Like all pastors, I preach, preside over the sacraments, teach, provide pastoral care, evangelism and seek to set a vision for the life of the community. Between the two of us, I tend to focus on many of

the administrative and management details that often fall on pastors—notably, I work with Finance, Trustees, Communications and related areas—while Mary Jane tends to focus more in the areas of pastoral care and programming. I also manage the church’s computers and administer the network.

How many years have you served at SUMC? 7.5

What is the favorite part of your job? Teaching, presiding at the Lord’s Table

What is the most challenging part of your job? I am not naturally outgoing and have never been described as gregarious, but pastoral ministry is a very public role. I tend to be somewhat studious and like to work alone in the quiet. I can say without irony that I would usually rather prepare a sermon than preach it. Such is the life of an introvert in a very public job! So the challenge is to maintain energy in the public role by receiving the nourishment needed by doing those things introverts cherish—study, reflection, quiet work…

Tell us about your pets. Lots of pets through the years, mostly cats. We currently have a 2-year-old Cocker Spaniel and an 8-year-old Tonkinese cat

What do you do to unwind? Read. I enjoy Astronomy and (when my knee is better) will get out my telescope on these lovely fall/winter nights. Photography—especially sunrises and sunsets.

What is your favorite place to take visitors? Sorry, depends on the visitor…not sure how to answer that one…

Tell us something about yourself that most people don’t know. Though not the youngest ever, I was, for a time, the youngest active minister in the North Georgia Conference.

Mary Jane and I were, for one of our years in the South Georgia Conference, the only clergy couple where both

were serving as pastors. And we were the first in South Georgia to serve as Co-Pastors.
