Heres what they posted on Saturday: We are all disgusted by the acts of racist, hate-filled terrorism in our hometown this weekend. Like so many our hearts are broken. A Response to the Events of Charlottesville, VA

August 12, 2017

As I sit to write this newsletter cover it is Monday morning, August 14th. Our country has just gone through another tragic weekend of hateful rhetoric, violence, and death. Many of us sit in astonishment, wondering if and when our nation will ever move beyond bigotry and pain.

I search the Internet for prayers, feeling inadequate to verbalize the pain. I think of the sermon I preached the day before and the example of Kaj Munk, the Danish playwright and parish pastor, murdered by the Nazis for being an outspoken critic against the Nazi regime. Like 32 year-old Charlottesville paralegal, Heather Heyer, Munk was killed for protesting the injustices of the day. One was taken by motor vehicle, the other by a bullet to the brain.

I said in the sermon yesterday that we are called to make a difference in the world, and that it is not enough for us to be nice people. Munk, like so many before and after him, have called for Christians to stand up and speak out against hate. I also offered up a quote from Munk: “The signs of the Christian church have always been the lion, the lamb, the dove, and the fish, but never the chameleon.”

Interestingly, in my search for appropriate words, I found some of the best penned by The Dave Matthews Band, a band from Charlottesville. Here’s what they posted on Saturday:

“We are all disgusted by the acts of racist, hate-filled terrorism in our hometown this weekend. Like so many our hearts are broken. Our thoughts go out to the families and victims of these unbelievable acts. This is not the Charlottesville we know and love. This town has grown from its sometimes great but often difficult history and is marching toward an inclusive future. This murderous act and those who incited it are not what we aspire to be. We will work tirelessly, hand-in-hand with our community to help one another so we can all heal from this sickening display of horror. Hate speech disguised as free speech is cowardly and shameful. Such speech gives permission to the murderous crimes we witnessed today. There is nothing pure, acceptable, or philosophical about Nazism, or racism masked as heritage.

The multicultural tapestry that is America must come together, we must acknowledge our very difficult but remarkable history. We must move away from the racist and ignorant elements of our past toward an inclusive, kinder, more intelligent future.”

Powerful words. By the time this newsletter goes to press, two weeks will have passed. Our country may likely have moved on to another tragic event, or two, or three. Terrorism and hatred are too often the order of the day in our world. Unfortunately, the events of this past weekend may be a distant memory.

How many people have to die before people of faith stand together and speak out against hatred and violence? This isn’t a political issue, this is a faith issue. God calls us to step out in faith, to change our communities and world to create places of peace and equality for all creatures, great and small.

Let us not grow weary or despondent in speaking the truth to power and evil. And do not be afraid. God is with us.

Fellowship Hall on Friday, September 8th 2017 at 1:00 p.m. for GriefShare registration and Session one. This will be our eleventh cycle of GriefShare over the last six years. The cost for the workbook and supplies is $20. GriefShare is a 13-week seminar support group where you can be around people who understand how you feel and understand the pain of your loss. You will learn valuable information that will help you through this difficult time in your life. Each leader in our GriefShare Group has experienced a loss of someone close.

If you’re unable to come on September 8th, you are welcome to begin attending the GriefShare group at any session. Each session is “self-contained,” so you do not have to attend in sequence. Sessions 2 through 13 will be held on Fridays from 1:15 – 3:30 pm in the choir room. You will find encouragement and help whenever you begin and will be able to continue with GriefShare throughout the next cycle. If you have any questions or would like more information, please contact Jim McNeill at (910) 393-9548 (Cell) or (910) 579-2405 (Home).

GETTING TO KNOW:

Mary Ellen Good (meg), Director of Communications and STARS Summer Literacy Program

Biography-childhood, places lived, school, family. I grew up in a small town west of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania called McKees Rocks. And yes, a gentleman named McKee sat on some rocks in the local creek, hence the name of the town. After graduation from a small girls high school I attended LaRoche College near Pittsburgh. My career in finance and mortgage banking took me to Denver, Colorado in 1997, Cleveland, Ohio in 2004, and Sunset Beach in 2007 when I “retired.” In was in Colorado that I met my husband Bill. He was and is a trooper in supporting not only my move to Cleveland but my “retirement” in Sunset Beach. Without revealing my age, my son will celebrate his 50th birthday next year. He and his family live in Boston, Mass. Bill’s daughters live in New Jersey and Colorado—great reasons to travel and for all of them to vacation at the beach!

Seaside UMC Story This October marks my sixth year working at Seaside. Six years ago I started as the church secretary. Over the years as Seaside grew my role changed to what it is today, Director of Communications. One of the questions in this biography is to describe our daily duties. The simplest way to describe them is, outside of making coffee first thing in the morning, working with all of you to gather information on everything that has/is/will happen here at Seaside and to communicate the information to our church family and community. My responsibilities include the information on upcoming events that you find in the weekly bulletin insert, Thursday email and monthly newsletter, “Currents,” along with what Scott wishes would be more, website content. There are still administrative duties such as answering phones, printing, supporting the pastors, etc.

Chapter 2 of the Story is serving as the Director of STARS, the summer literacy program that Seaside offers Jessie Mae Monroe Elementary students who are at risk in their ability to read. STARS just completed its fourth year in early August. Back in the summer of 2013 I offered to attend a planning meeting to take notes and act as the program secretary and, as the saying goes, “that’s all she wrote,” I was hooked. Here we are four years later planning for next year.

Favorite part of my job? You. Like any family, we may have our moments but it truly is a blessing to meet and work with all of you. One of the greatest joys of the STARS program is being able to introduce two Seaside volunteers who may never have met because they attend different services. Watching relationships grow and each person’s unique talents being shared are an amazing gift for which I thank God for every day. Working with the children and families during the six weeks of STARS is also at the top of the list. Beyond this beautiful building and wonderful “beachy area” there is so much need in our local community. Being a part of the Seaside team in ministering to these needs is also one of the highlights of being here.

Most challenging part of your job? Never enough time. Not much else to say on this one other than I wish I would have paid more attention to technology as it was developing.

Pets Our cocker spaniel Isaac passed away shortly after we moved here. Scott & Mary Jane’s cocker Millie must be his fraternal twin. We’re always ready to “borrow” her to have some “Millie” time. I don’t think she minds when we call her Isaac!

What do you do to unwind? Pretend I’m retired. Scrapbooking has been my hobby for over 10 years. Someday when I’m ready to part with all the family albums, the kids may get to enjoy all the time, attempted creativity and joy I’ve had in documenting their lives. I love to read, learning to sew, being outdoors and, as the picture above shows, love and miss being “down by the river.” Fly fishing became a hobby when we lived in Colorado.

Tell us something about yourself that most people don’t know. In trying to think of something that is a “wow” I’m drawing a blank. I do have a new interest, thanks to my grandson. He recently travelled to Spain for a month and we did some searching together on Google Earth. As a result I try to think of places I’ve always wanted to see. Now I virtually visit them on Google Earth. Actually found the building where he lived while in Spain! Maybe some day….when I’m retired!

“Blessed are the poor in spirit, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven." Matthew 5:3

You may see bees flying around the choir

room this year and wonder what they symbolize. The Joyful Noise Children's Choir will be studying the Beatitudes this year as well as other "attitudes" we have! We hope you will encourage your children to join us on Wednesday, September 6th from 4:30-5:15 as we begin a new year of choir. We will be singing, playing instruments, and learning about God's Word. All children are invited!

If you missed the first rehearsal of Sanctuary Choir and want to join, it's not too late! Join us on Thursday, September 7th at 6:00 in the sanctuary for our next rehearsal. Exciting plans are in the works for the fall and we'd love to have YOU join us!

On Country Fair Sunday, September 17th there will be only one service and only one choir. We hope you will worship with us as we raise our voices in unity at 10:00 AM. Don't be late!

Sunday, September 24th will see a return of the Master's Men. The Master's Men is an a cappella group from the triangle area which has given 2 concerts at Seaside in the past years. They will be in Ocean Isle on a weekend retreat and will sing at the 8:00 & 11:00 services that morning. I know you will enjoy their music!

BIG ANNOUNCEMENT: Seaside Friends in Concert III will be held on Sunday, October 8th at 4:00 PM. I am excited to announce that Dr. Monica Sparzak will join Grace Yando and me for our third in the Seaside Friends Concert series. Monica filled in for me when we were in New York City in May. If you heard her, you know what a wonderful organist she is and if you were not able to attend that morning, you will NOT want to miss hearing her! This concert will feature a former student and a current student of mine. Grace Yando is an 8th grader at Shallotte Middle School and has shared her musical ability with us on several occasions. Tickets for the concert are $10 and will be available on Tuesday, September 5th in the church office. All proceeds will benefit the Seaside Labyrinth project. A reception will follow the concert in our Fellowship Hall. We hope you will join us and enjoy an afternoon of wonderful music. With a voice of singing, Kathryn

Congratulations readers! The 2017 Reading Program has ended and I have submitted the names of 17 participants. Once again, we did not reach our lofty goal of 25 readers, or 20, or even 18 like last year. However the good news is that we had 4 new participants this year! Now we have to just get the previous readers on board as well. Certificates will be given out at the January UMW Prayer Breakfast.

I have already found the 2018 reading list online and will be ordering books soon. They should be on the shelves by early September, soon after you receive this newsletter. Don't wait! Stop in the library and pick up some books that you didn't read last year to get you started. Happy Reading!

Permanent Endowment &

Special Gifts Committee

A Donor story—a woman cares about her church’s future An elderly member was discussing her “stewardship philosophy” with a

planned giving counselor. “My church has always been an important part of my life, and I want to always be a part of my church.”

One of the ways she accomplished that during her lifetime was through her generous and faithful contributions from her current income, but she gave her stewardship conviction permanence as she established an endowment with the remainder of a lifetime gift. “Now,” she said with a great deal of satisfaction, “I will be part of this church every year even after I am no longer here to make my contributions.”

Does this sound like something you would like to do? If so, please contact one of our ministers or one of the PESG Committee members, Ralph Gardner, Erdeen Zimmerly, or Marvin Ragland.

Agape Boxes for Armenia 2017 Start Collecting Items Now

Agape boxes are part of an outreach mission of the NC UMC Conference. They provide the children of Armenia with much needed supplies and the joy of a present during the Christmas season. This mission is the only one that serves this part of Armenia and the only opportunity for the children to receive help. Seaside will be part of this mission

beginning this year. The designated Agape plastic shoe boxes were available on August 27th after each Sunday service at the Ministry Fair...and they were all spoken for...but it is not too late. You can purchase a 6 qt Sterilite box from Dollar General for $1.00. You can fill it according to the lists that are available on the table outside the Fellowship Hall. These lists are specific to age and gender for the children. Please do not include candy, gum or any perishable items. Everything MUST fit into the shoe box. As you fill them, they can be returned to the church at any time. We will be blessing the boxes and the children who will receive them on Sunday, September 24th. Common items for the children older than 3 years old: Toboggan hats, mittens/gloves, socks, combs/brushes, toothbrushes, coloring books, crayons(24 pack), note pads, washable markers, package of pencils and pencil sharpener. You can then choose a list to correspond with the items OR just donate what you have purchased for others to pack in a box. The Seaside Outreach Committee is sponsoring this mission. We have purchased 100 "compliant" boxes for us to fill and take to the MERCI center for shipment to Armenia. As mentioned above, you may add to this supply. Monetary donations can be made to help with the cost of shipment and for the cost of the boxes ($1 per/ box). Fill a box for a child in extreme need and feel a bit of Christmas Joy a little early. Thanks!!

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ On Sunday, October 1st, authentic Haitian metal art from the Village of the Artists in Croix des Bouquets will be
available for sale after each service in the Fellowship Hall. 2018 calendars will also be for sale. The calendars are made from photos taken by Mountains to Mountains short-term mission volunteers. Not only are these items beautiful, but they make lovely gifts. Both products support six orphaned sisters who were brought to the mission, Real Hope for Haiti, after the 2010 earthquake. Mountains to Mountains (now a part of Seaside's Outreach program) has provided the monthly living expenses of $375 for the sisters for the past 5 years through donations and fundraising such as the metal art and calendars. The girls are now ages 9-19 and live together in a two-room block and concrete house. Your support will be greatly appreciated.
The United Methodist Men will hold their next monthly meeting on Monday, September 11th, at 6:30 pm. Our speaker will be Haylie Long, from Lower Cape Fear Hospice. Bob Kogler and David Mack will be providing the dinner that evening. Come and enjoy a good dinner with great Christian fellowship. The change from the normal first Monday of the month is due to the Labor Day holiday. We’ll be discussing our upcoming Christmas tree sales in November. United Methodist Men enjoy serving our church and community. We’re always looking for more men to participate by joining us at meetings and working on our projects. We’re striving to reach a goal of at least 50 attendees at our monthly meetings. Consider bringing a friend or neighbor as a guest to our next meeting in September. They do not have to be a member of Seaside UMC to join our group as we welcome all members of our community.
Seekers Circle (Change of Meeting)
The Seekers Circle will meet on Tuesday, September 19 at 1 p.m. in the Fellowship Hall. Due to the Country Fair, the date has changed this month. Co-Chairs: Carol Matthews Mary Ann vonHausen
Shell Seekers Book Club Are you new to Seaside? Did you know that we have our own Book Club that meets here at church? Shell Seekers meets the third Monday of each month at 1:00 PM in the church parlor. We have taken the summer off and will resume our monthly meetings on Monday, September 18, 2017. At this meeting we will not be discussing a book, but will plan book selections for the next year.. Won't you consider joining us
and bringing your own suggestions to the group? Each year we try to include two books from the UMW Reading Program as well as other titles that support our Christian faith, many of them are on the best-seller lists! Please call Marie Wilcox at 910-575-1076 for more information or with questions.
Did You Miss The Ministry Fair?
Sunday, August 27th the Fellowship Hall was filled with displays and Seaside folks who were on hand to answer questions about the wealth of opportunities to Connect, Grow and Serve here at Seaside.
If you missed it, please check the bulletin board in the Gallery and look for the cards for each ministry. Interested in learning more? Complete the cards and give them to Stefanie or Meg. They will make sure you’re contacted about your interests.
