INTRODUCTION.

What is global warming?Global warming is the increase in the average temperature of the Earth's

near -sur f ace air and oceans since the mid-20th century and its pr ojected

cotinuation. The Inter gover nmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC)

concludes that most of the observed temperature increase since the middle

of the 20th century was caused by increasing concentrations of greenhouse

gasses resulting f r om human activity such as fossil f uel bur ning anddeforestation.



An increase in global temperature will cause sea levels to r ise and will

change the amount and patter n of precipitation, pr obably including

expansion of subtr opical deserts. The continuing retreat

of glacier s, permaf r ost and sea ice is expected, with warming

being str ongest in the ar ctic. Other likely eff ects include increases in

the intensity of extreme weather events, species extinctions, and

changes in agr icultural yields.

Average temperatures have climbed 1.4 degrees Fahrenheit (0.8degree Celsius) ar ound the wor ld since 1880, much of this in recent decades, accor ding to NASA's Goddar d Institute for Space Studies.

The rate of warming is increasing. The 20th century's last two

decades were the hottest in 400 year s and possibly the warmest for several millennia, accor ding to a number of climate studies. And the United Nations' Inter gover nmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC)reports that 11 of the past 12 year s are among the dozen warmest since 1850.

Sea level could r ise between 7 and 23 inches (18 to 59centimeter s) by century's end, the IPCC's February 2007 report pr ojects. Rises of just 4 inches (10 centimeter s) could flood many South Seas islands and swamp lar ge parts of Southeast Asia.



Mitigation and solutions.

Car bon capture and storage (CCS) is an appr oach tomitigation. Emissions may be sequestered f r om fossil

f uel power plants, or removed dur ing pr ocessing in

hydr ogen pr oduction. When used on plants, it is known

as bio-ener gy with car bon capture and storage.



Solutions.

Get educated.

Choose vegetarian or vegan meals.

Recycle more by using recycling bins,composting, etc.

Use compact fluorescent.

Use recycled paper.

Buy locally made and locally grownproducts.

Count your carbon .



Solutions.

Support producers of renewable energy.

Buy minimally packaged goods.

Insulate anything that uses energy to stay a

different temperature from its environment.

Replace old appliances and reduce reliance

on them. Use public transportation.
