Be prepared to hurry! Be prepared to think! Be prepared to feel a little lost! Mostly, be prepared to have a lot of fun!!! You have just entered Breakout, Indy’s newest entertainment escape room.

Here’s how it works…a group of five to eight people have one hour to use multiple clues to breakout of a room. The Breakout host will welcome you when your journey begins. They will give you your mission and help get you started. At that point, it’s GO time. The clock is ticking, and you and your teammates will be scurrying around the room looking for clues. As soon as you unlock one clue, you will be faced with yet another challenge. Again, you’ve got to keep moving and work together because time is of the essence!

BREAKOUT THE FUN

L to R: Hostess Kristen Bushman, manager Isaac Bushman, Alyssa Sander, Chalene Braun, Rachel Quade, Susan Spafford, April Cantrell and Dawn Barnett.

At Breakout, there are three different themes you can try. There is the Museum Heist, Casino Royale and The Kidnapping. Channeling our inner-Colonel Mustard, our group tried out the Museum Heist. Apparently, the museum owner stole a rare collection of artwork. Our job was to

recover the masterpiece within one hour before the gallery opened! Don’t worry if you never took Art History 101. It’s not needed. All the info you need to break out of the room is contained within the room. We will warn you – this game is not easy! Only 30% of the participants get out of the

Museum Heist within the hour.

Throughout the hour, our helpful hostess Kristen gave us hints over the speakers within the room. Be warned – you only get so many hints. After that, you have to earn them. You’ll have to visit Breakout to find

out how you get the extra clues! With Kristen’s help, not to mention a lot of rushing around, yelling and straining our brains, we managed to recover the stolen artwork! We did it all within the allotted hour…with a whopping 35 seconds to spare!

Breakout Indianapolis is part of a nationwide chain. There are a total of 10 locations throughout the United States. Breakout opened here this past fall and has been quite busy! We tried to get in around the holidays, and it was booked solid. They are open seven days a week from morning until night. For prices and availability, visit their website at breakoutindianapolis.com.

The rooms can accommodate up to eight people. If you don’t have eight, don’t worry! You will be teamed up with other people. It really doesn’t matter whether you know the people or not – you’ll still have fun!

Breakout’s manager Isaac Nichols told us a new themed room will be opening soon. It’s called The Island. So if you are like some of Breakout’s customers and have already hit all three themed rooms, a new one is on the way!

Whether you go with friends, family, co-workers or by yourself, you are sure to love this fast paced hour of fun! Thank you so much to our friends for joining us. We hope you loved it as much as we did. So go pretend you’re in your very own episode of “CSI” and enjoy!!

Upon entering Goodfella’s Old World Brick Oven Pizza and Pasta Restaurant, you will instantly feel an openhearted, warm, cheerful ambiance as the hostess guides you to your table. Beyond the sound of laughter and people having conversation over complimentary baked bread and seasoned oil, there’s something welcoming about the aroma of freshly prepared ziti, lasagna, spaghetti and meatballs and specialty pizzas.

Goodfella’s is celebrating its nine year anniversary and has been voted “Best Pizza in America” four times and International Pizza Champions, Las Vegas 2012. Plus, the Smoking Goodfella was voted the World’s Best Pizza. This mouthwatering sensation is made with smoked mozzarella, roasted pepper sauce, fresh sausage, roasted peppers and caramelized onions. Other gourmet pizzas include Pizza alla Vodka, Vegetable Delight, Buffalo Chicken, Eggplant Parmigiana and Margherita. All pizzas start with a signature semolina dough,

fresh mozzarella, homemade sauce and the freshest and finest toppings available.

“A lot of people don’t know we’re here. We’re like a hidden secret,” says Abul Rahman, owner of Goodfella’s located at 9641 Olio Rd. Abul has brought his experience from working as Food and Beverage Manager at The Hawthorns Golf and Country Club for nine years and as owner of Infusion Restaurant for two years.

He says that many of his clients are repeat customers. Once they enjoy the Goodfella’s experience of reliable friendly service and authentic old world charm, they always come back for more.

Some things setting Goodfella’s apart from other restaurants are the 11 comfortable booths available which are always popular among guests. Also, the side items are delicious.

Roasted vegetables, sautéed spinach and creamy risotto are just a few of the side dish options. Furthermore, the kids menu offers homemade hand-breaded chicken tenders, never frozen, in addition to cheese ravioli and pizza.

The layout includes a full bar on one side with four TVs and some tables. The restaurant side features plenty of tables in view of four more TVs and the brick oven where cooks are busy preparing specialty pastas and pizzas. In the summertime, alfresco dining is an option with patio tables and an awning outside.

Just in case you were wondering, gluten-free pizzas and pastas are available as well as whole wheat. Also, there’s flexibility in preparing different menu options upon request.

Abul has listened to his clientele’s wish list and is offering a new menu with parmesan-crusted pan-seared basa, shrimp scampi and chicken piccata. As always, there are delicious appetizers, soups and salads all made to order like the Mussels Marinara, Lobster Bisque and Grilled BBQ Salmon Salad.

Come check out the daily drink specials like the $5 margaritas (Sundays), $4 drafts of imported beer (Mondays), $10 off any bottle of wine (Wednesdays) and half-off bottles of wine (Thursdays). Choose from domestic beers on tap like Coors Light and Miller Lite as well as Indiana local brews featuring Triton Railsplitter IPA, Bells Two-Hearted Ale, Quaff on Busted Knuckle, Sun King Cream Ale and Sun King Fistful of Hops.

At Goodfella’s, you can dine-in, carry out or have your food delivered. There’s also a catering service allowing you to organize your next business function. Expect to hear many “oohs and aahs” as your co-workers will certainly rave over the exceptional tastes. Plan your next birthday party or special occasion and let Goodfella’s do all the work for you.

“I love to see the looks on people’s faces when they’re eating our good quality food and enjoying their dining experience,” says Abul who always tries to welcome

every table. “We believe in taking care of them from the heart. They’re like family. Whatever we cook in the kitchen, we believe it’s as if we’re serving our own family members.”

Abul invites you to come by and visit Goodfella’s and make special memories with family and friends.

The neighborhood tire and auto store just east of Olio on 96th Street now has a new name and face. Formerly Cooper Tire, Neal Tire and Auto Service bought the store last year by adding it to their 26 other retail locations.

With its 27 retail stores and six distribution warehouses (operating under the name Ben Tire) in Indiana, Illinois and Kentucky. The size of the organization provides the buying power to compete with any discount tire merchant with tire brands such as Michelin, Goodyear, Bridgestone, Firestone, Yokohama and Cooper. Automotive services were also needed. Neal Tire made a strategic move of its headquarters from Toledo, Illinois, to Indianapolis in May 2015. The company’s president and two vice presidents reside in Hamilton County, paving the road for Neal to expand its business presence in Indiana.

When the previous owner, Bob Williams, was looking to sell, Neal revved its engines of expansion, and the deal fell into place. Now Indiana boasts Neal stores in McCordsville, Terre Haute, Greencastle, Bloomington, Columbus and Crawfordsville.

Neal has had a foothold in the tire and automotive industry since 1925 when it was started by the Neal family. Now employee owned and operated, Neal Tire and Auto Service is proud to offer the same high standard of quality workmanship and customer service introduced over 90 years ago. To that end, Neal’s company mission is to offer peace of mind to its customers.

Neal’s commitment to its customers shows. Take your car to Neal Tire and Automotive, and you’ll get more than just a tire experience. “Each customer gets quality attention because they’re dealing directly with one of the owners,” says President Terry Carlon. "The engine behind delivering a good experience to customers is the company’s philosophy of attention to total vehicle safety.

Carlon says, “It’s all about the safety of all elements of the vehicle. Selling tires is the easy part, but ensuring the complete safety of our customers is our goal.” That means the technicians will check your vehicle for uneven tire wear or any mechanical issues that, if left unchecked, might compromise the safety of your vehicle’s occupants or other motorists.

Neal offers a full range of automotive services from lube, oil and filter changes to driveshaft repair, engine diagnostics and more. Stop in the store east of the corner of Olio and 96th Street just beyond the strip mall and gas station, and visit their website to explore all that Neal Tire and Auto Service has to offer.

Along the east side of Lawton Loop at Fort Benjamin Harrison in a converted barracks resides Porter Books & Bread. Featuring fresh baked goods, local coffees and sandwiches, Porter Books & Bread has become a fast favorite among local residents.

“We are very happy at how well received Porter has been," shares owner Will Worley who does all of the baking except “the sweet stuff ” which is made by his wife, Marcy. The Worleys fell in love with the area around the Fort.

Opening at 6 a.m. most days, Porter uses a French press to make their coffee, all of which is locally roasted. Porter is proud to use local coffee beans from Mile Square and Brickhouse. Both roasters provide a cold brew option as well. According to Marcy, “Cold brew in itself is more smooth than traditional brewed coffee, and neither really need cream or milk.”

The main motivation for opening Porter Books & Bread is Will and Marcy’s love of sandwiches. They use unique ingredients such as a family recipe for southern pimento cheese on the Twain which makes for an interesting twist to grilled cheese.

The Austin and Vonnegut sandwiches use Smoking Goose smoked turkey breast as the protein base and special elements such as fromage frais purchased from the Tulip Tree Creamery, another popular local vendor. Even their baby romaine is from a local greenhouse in Peru, Indiana, named Green River Greenhouse.

The book side of the business is a collection of used books that are available for purchase or trade. “We have customers bring in bags of used books and take a couple off the shelves,” says Will.

The ambience and decor of the interior lends itself to a relaxing atmosphere that is urban in feel yet comfortable like your grandmother’s kitchen.

Building owners and Lawton Loop residents Ali and Tom Marten are thrilled with Porter Books & Bread being located in their building.

“We kept as many of the historic characteristics and elements in the building as we could,” shares Ali.

“The exposed brick and beams are original, and we have salvaged as much of the original hardwood flooring.”

The efforts of pulling up tile and glue from the floors to expose the beautiful hardwood flooring beneath was worth the effort. The concrete floors of the lower level were polished, maintaining as much of the original integrity of the building as possible. Perhaps the most notable historic element is the tin ceiling on the stairway. “After stripping off layers of paint, we discovered the original tin ceiling,” shares Ali.

Entrances are located on both sides of the building, making parking easy. This spring, a back patio area will be added as well as wraparound porches to the building.

Visit PorterBread.com for more information or just walk or drive over. Coffee is steeping in the French press, and a sandwich named after a famous author is calling to you.

Will you outlive your money?Let the folks at Graystone show you how to buy a home,

keep your cash and have no mortgage paymentsAs an active adult entering my senior years, I can empathize with what reputable surveys have suggested is the number one fear— to assure I have the cash to live my golden years at a standard of living that I have earned. Our recent economic times and the bust in housing that occurred in 2008 have not alle-viated this concern.Would you like to purchase your dream home, up to $625,000, with only a small partial in-vestment down and NO mortgage payments? Keep your hard earned cash for your gold-en years to enjoy peace of mind, travel, in-vest or just spoil your grandkids further. If this sounds too good to be true, please read further! Buy a Home without Mortgage Pay-ments! In January 2009 the Federal Housing Administration (FHA) created the Home Equity Conversion Mortgage (HECM) for Purchase Loan Program. If you or your spouse are 62 years or better, the HECM for Purchase Loan can enable you to buy your next home without any monthly mortgage payments. Regardless of how long you live in the home or what happens to your home’s value, you only make one, initial investment (down payment) towards the purchase. Why Consider a HECM for Purchase Loan? No matter what your needs may be, a HECM for Purchase Loan can help increase purchasing power and flexibility when buying a prin-cipal residence. Many home buyers use the HECM for Purchase Loan to: • Right-size to a home that fits their needs today and offers low maintenance living• Buy a home closer to family or friends• Lower their cost of living during retirement•Enjoy carefree living in an Active Adult housing community. Best of all, since mont-ly mortgage payments are not required, a HECM for Purchase Loan may help pre-serve your hard-earned savings and improve your cash flow. You will continue to own and maintain the title of your home for as long as the property remains your principal res-idence. Purchasing a home with a HECM for Purchase Loan Example: Don and Shirley, both 68-years-old, want to buy a low-main-tenance home. They work with Eric Down-ing at Graystone, in Fishers, to find a new

home that fits their current needs. The new home’s pur-chase price is $400,000. Eric introduces Don and Shirley to a HECM for Purchase Spe-cialist, Ann Marie Harrison, who works with Retirement Funding Solutions. Ann Ma-rie shows the buyers how the HECM for Purchase Loan will provide the funds they need for their new home. Don and Shirley will receive funds of approximately $210,000 from a HECM for Purchase Loan and use approximately $190,000 cash from the sale of their current home to pur-chase a new $400,000 home with no monthly mortgage payments. Trying to find specialized items and ingredients from local producers in just one place can sometimes be a challenge, especially when you are making a large dinner and need that special sauce or seasoning. Or maybe you just have a hankering for that special locally made sweet treat.

Adam Moody, owner of Moody’s Butcher Shop at 10106 Brooks School Rd., is trying to help you with that challenge.

Moody’s is serving as the host/pickup location for a new virtual Farmer’s Market called FarmersMarket.com.

FarmersMarket.com co-founders Nick

Carter and Chris Baggott have started the program to create a Farmer’s Market experience with the ease of ordering online which comes in handy especially during the winter months.

Market days are hosted every Thursday. The first market day at Moody’s was Jan. 7.

“I’m very excited about this new service,” Moody said. “Customers can find our most popular Moody’s items as well as dozens of products from other local producers. FarmersMarket.com humanizes food by developing local markets for farmers and artisan products.”

Here’s how the market works:

• You place an order on FarmersMarket.com.

• The Farmer/Artisan delivers your order to your market host on Market Day.

• You pick it up at your market host: Moody’s Butcher Shop. FarmersMarket.com offers everything from baked goods, special coffee and teas and cosmetics and soaps to dairy products, fruits and vegetables, pet treats, syrups and sweets.

Carter noted that FarmersMarket.com prides itself on being passionate about responsibly raised and sustainable food.

“We believe food that is better for the people is better for the planet,” Carter said at Moody’s. “We have been pursuing those concepts for a long time now.”

business: Husk, a food manufacturing company they started in 2012 which they recently sold to Lifeline Farms in Connersville.

“We both have backgrounds in software, and we used technology to place products in over 300 grocery stores with Husk,” Carter said.

They plan to launch 50 more FarmersMarket.com markets across Indiana.

“People need more aggregated, local fresh food options,” Carter stressed. “We have a diversity of products not available in grocery stores. For example, we have products such as special eggs and quail that could not be found in local grocery chains. We get eggs from three different Indiana farmers.”

Carter noted that they also have a lot of diversity on the vendor list.

“Grocery stores have a large list of food

items they have to order, so they have to consolidate when they are ordering,” Carter emphasized. “They can’t always carry specialized items. Technology is the great equalizer. All the inefficiencies are eliminated. The FarmersMarket.com concept opens a lot of opportunities for different companies to offer their products to consumers who really want them and can’t find them elsewhere.”

SPECIALIST GLENN KANT

Writer & Photographer / Kara Reibel

Celebrating their 12th anniversary in business, Aquarium Service and Design, Inc. creates custom aquariums, utilizing a thoughtful design process. They also provide maintenance and service to saltwater (and some freshwater) aquariums throughout Central Indiana. While they will service freshwater tanks, owner Glenn Kant’s specialty is saltwater reef tanks.

Kant’s love of aquatic life began as kid. “I got my first aquarium when I was 7 years old and had multiple tanks of fish in my bedroom growing up,” shares Kant. “Aside from my college years, I’ve always maintained a few tanks."

An avid scuba diver, Kant’s passion for fish and saltwater aquariums poured over until 1998 when he changed careers.

“I was ready for major life changes, and a new career was part of that,” says Kant. He went to work for an aquarium company,

and after a few years, he ventured out on his own.

There are many benefits to having an aquarium at home. “Many times, an aquarium replaces your TV,” shares Kant. “I have so many people, including doctors’ offices, who place a tank where a television would normally be. In an office setting, an aquarium provides a sense of calm, and it gets the patient’s mind off of why they are there. The same is said for having one in a home. Aquarium owners sit in front of it and stare at the fish and corals for de-stressing.”

A custom saltwater reef tank by Aquarium Service and Design includes a custom design tank, stand and canopy. However, the most important element is the custom design of the filtration system and adequate lighting. Kant fabricates his own filters and offers customized woodworking. Many times, Kant and his company are called in to clean, fix and improve existing tank systems.

Kant’s passion for building aquariums extends into working with designers and builders to create ones built into walls for

homes, not just businesses. Kant adds, “This is my passion. I want every coral, starfish and fish to live happily and give them the best life possible in captivity.”

As part of Kant’s business, he quarantines livestock, meaning he holds all animals in his holding systems until he is sure they are healthy, eating and ready for placement in their new environment.

“An aquarium is a complex and sensitive ecosystem,” says Kant. “Many people spend a good deal of money on a tank only to realize that they have bought inferior equipment for their intended vision.”

People invest in an aquarium, just as they do with any pet. It’s Kant’s experience that most of his clients just want to watch their fish eat but don’t want to clean the aquarium. He offers monthly, weekly and bi-weekly maintenance plans to help keep their investment, and their fish, healthy.

Kant, while not a vegan, does not eat seafood. He says, “I’d rather dive with them and view them in their natural habitat.”

WITH BILLIE DRAGOOWriter / Kara ReibelPhotographer / Amy Unger

RepuCare Founder, President and CEO Billie Dragoo has an office so heavily decorated with awards and accolades that it appears to be a trophy room at a Hall of Fame museum.

Dragoo is honored to have received every award proudly displayed in her office. When asked about her most coveted achievement or award, Dragoo doesn’t hesitate to say “the Central Indiana Business Hall of Fame Junior Achievement Award I received alongside fellow Laureates David Simon (SIMON Group), Dave P. Lindsey (Defender Direct) and Michael Smith (Anthem) the same year.”

Make no mistake, Dragoo is a champion. She is a celebrated champion of her efforts to help others, namely women business owners. Dragoo’s story is inspirational of course. As a single mom of two young children, she started a business based in her home providing healthcare staffing which has flourished over the years.

But it’s not the struggles she has experienced or a sad tale that defines Dragoo. The truly compelling nature of why crystal trophies litter her office space is simple. It’s Dragoo’s method and her mindset that has brought her success. She didn’t trip the prom queen and throw the PTO moms under the bus; she has simply lived a life of service by reaching out to

help other women around her achieve their dreams.

“You help one woman in business, you help a thousand,” says Dragoo. Her friend, Deborah Collins Stephens, best-selling author and former Silicon Valley venture capitalist, adds. “The ripple effect of helping just one woman cascades to others. The outreach is profound.”

There is still a long way to go with measurable statistics supporting why companies should support diversity in business. Studies show that women-led teams in large companies outperform those led by men. Women-owned businesses give back more to their communities and are found to be more efficient.

Page 27: Geist Magazine February 2016

TownePost.com / FEBRUARY 2016 / TOWNEPOST NETWORK

When Dragoo was looking for funding to expand her business, she was rejected. “I had a solid pitch deck, and there was not a single institution wanting to invest in my service-based company,” says Dragoo, “until Carol Curran stepped in and put up her own money.”

Carol Curran, CEO of Phoenix Data Corp, created a ripple with her investment in RepuCare, for the money enabled RepuCare to expand and subsequently purchase another woman-owned business. The ripple turned into a wave.

This experience propelled Dragoo to facilitate profound policy change in regards to venture money for women.

Most service-driven companies are owned by women. Finding capital for service-based businesses has been nearly impossible. Dragoo takes credit for the start of the Indiana Diversity Investment Fund as she should.

“I believe that if you are in a position to extend your hand and bring someone forward, you do it,” says Curran. “My investment in Billie’s company enabled her to help someone else directly. We are all proud of that.”

Collins Stephens adds, “Billie has opened doors for so many women in this state. I wish others could operate as she does from a ‘perspective of abundance’ instead of a ‘what’s in it for me?’ mentality. Billie

is the real deal, and I am blessed to have her as a friend!”

Dragoo’s value of other female entrepreneurs cannot be overstated. Mentoring is very important to her, and she feels it is a duty, rather than a choice, for women to assist other women for business success. The wave is gaining momentum.

Husband and wife duo James and Sheri Nichols launched 131 Event Productions, a race management and timing company that hosts runs around the Indianapolis area. In less than two years, they have already gained a local following of racers seeking a top-quality racing experience.

The 131 Events team, comprised of about 20 employees, creates races from start to finish. This includes brainstorming, marketing, course design, food, music, photography, timing, set-up, tear-down and much more. Along with their goal to provide racers of all types with the highest quality experience, the events are also often themed and provide a fun, dynamic atmosphere for runners of all ages and abilities.

After working in the field for a few years and developing an interest in creating her own events, Sheri began 131 Event Productions in June 2014 as president of the company. With her creativity and experience in marketing, she makes the perfect pair with husband and

Director of Operations James who handles technical aspects including timing.

“In June 2014, I built 131 Events to create and market my own events focused on the racer’s experience and high quality aspects of the event’s production,” said Sheri. “I love what I do because I get to create an event for the community that provides them an opportunity to get outside and do something healthy. I am constantly surrounded by people that constantly challenge themselves and care about their health. Our racers inspire me every day.”

Starting in the fall 2015, the company has been experiencing a sellout of races. Racers follow the events, and many of them sell out weeks beforehand.

“It is the quality of the overall experience,” said James. “From the medal, course design and food to the photography, upbeat music and the world-class timing, racers can expect to enjoy every aspect.”

“I think that the quality of the events are reflective of our personal investment. We care.”

While a typical race day begins at 4 a.m. and runs 8-10 hours, the countless hours chipping race bibs, meeting with police and venue owners and answering Facebook messages are what make the events what they are.

“It never stops,” said Sheri. “You think about the next event or a new idea 24/7.”

And with 11 branded events for 2016, it really doesn’t stop for the duo. Each event takes months of planning and dozens of staff members, volunteers and sponsors. For 2016, two brand new races will be introduced, and other races will be expanded as well.

“For 2016, we are most excited to introduce the SHE Power Half Marathon,” said Sheri. “This is the first of our races that we truly expect to expand nationally. The theme is capturing the attention of women nationwide. In only two weeks since its introduction, the Indianapolis race in June is nearly 40 percent sold out. The virtual race option has already reached 29 states and three countries.”

Imagine an arts district at Fort Benjamin Harrison, much like the Carmel Arts and Design district – a real arts and cultural destination not just for the local community but also for visitors. As you drive down Otis Avenue, you see an entire street and row of buildings completely devoted to promoting the arts, including musical arts, performing arts, dance, photography, painting and more.

That’s the vision of the Partnerships for Lawrence (PFL). Thanks to that ambitious vision, Executive Director Judy Byron and Office Manager Alicia Collins have just reopened the Theater at the Fort.

Byron, who came to the PFL after a solid career in architecture and art, has been the driving force behind the theater reopening. With a passion for community outreach and art, Byron shifted gears into the not-for-profit sector when the economy took a nosedive. Looking for a new job, a new connection and

wanting to continue in the realm of the arts, Byron found the PFL and joined.

She served on the PFL board for five years, leading a wealth of programs including art fairs, youth art programs, outreach programs, public art projects and many other cultural development events. But there was one piece missing.

The PFL’s original plans included acquisition of the Main Post Theater to hold performances in addition to having more space for other art and cultural activities. Built in 1929, the theater was used for the armed forces as a movie house and live theater. The building opened to the public in the ’70s and ’80s. After the closing of the Fort, the building was given to the city. Years of negotiations ensued while the PFL continued to quickly outgrow their home on Franklin Road. Finally, the City of Lawrence agreed to rent the theater to the PFL, and the deal was brokered.

Now that the theater is finally in the hands of the PFL, Judy and her staff are ready to

revive it and make their art dreams happen. After remaining largely unused for 30 years (with the exception of the National Guard renting the space as a practice hall), PFL reopened the building and began the massive task of renovating.

After taking possession of the building in October 2015, the PFL cleaned, painted, repaired damage from a January 2015 flood and more. Many improvements are needed, such as new curtains, sound and lighting, but as I look around the 87-year-old building, I can already see and feel the majesty it once had.

With grand chandeliers, 208 new seats that were installed in the ’80s but barely used, an ample stage and even the seal of the great United States of America proudly displayed on the wall reminding guests of the theater’s historic past, visitors immediately get a sense of Americana.

The theater held its first show, “It’s a Wonderful Life: A Live Radio Play,” the first and second weekends of December to rave reviews.

Valentine’s Weekend Special

Spotlight Players of Beech Grove produced the show, and they have an exciting season on tap at the Theater at the Fort.

Coming in February 2016 is a play that ironically Byron and the PFL can surely relate to, “Blues for an Alabama Sky.” It is a play about the post-Harlem Renaissance era where dreams of grandeur have all but disappeared in the wake of the Great Depression. A perfect offering to celebrate Black History month, the play includes a brilliant African American cast of five.

Starring local poet and actress Gabrielle Patterson as Angel, Philip Armstrong as Guy, Alicia Collins as Delia, Ennis Adams Jr. as Sam and Onis Dean as Leland, the play brings to life their journeys as they strive to bring their dreams to fruition. You won’t want to miss this masterpiece of romance, cynicism and comedy.

“Vanya and Sonia and Masha and Spike”

is on tap for April, “Charlotte’s Web” for June and “Waiting for Godot” for July. Visit spotlight-players.org for showtimes and tickets.

Byron reminds me that theater isn’t the only offering in the building. They have an exciting four-week summer camp planned that includes dance, circus arts and miming by Luis Oliva (teacher at Forest Glen Elementary), public art (sculpture), a percussion class which teaches the percussion styles of various cultures and even performances by Dance Kaleidoscope.

Families who are interested in the art programs should visit lawrenceartcenter.net for the calendar. Summer is their busiest season for camps with children out of school. You’ll want to sign up early as classes sell out quickly.

In the meantime, the PFL is forging ahead

with their agenda for growth. Byron emphasizes, “We can’t do this alone. We need the support of the community.” Collins adds, “There is such hidden value here. We want everyone to come discover the endless possibilities for performing and visual arts.”

There are many ways you can support the PFL, including donations and participating in classes and programs. The PFL’s Adopt-A-Chair program puts your name on a seat in the theater for a donation. Byron says just as important as financial contributions, they need volunteers.

Visit the PFL website, lawrenceartcenter.net, for more details. On with the show!

With the ability to provide an entire meal’s nutrition in a glass, meal replacement shakes have become a popular option for people looking for a healthy boost without having to eat raw kale. From Shakeology to Plexus, there are many different products on the market boasting different ingredients and claims.

In the opinions of sellers and consumers, meal replacement shakes are the perfect solution for someone looking to shed a few pounds, become stronger or just stay in shape.

“Personally, I have lost 30 pounds and dropped about half my body fat from in the 30s to now about 15 percent with all my learning and efforts these past five years,” said Beachbody Coach Sandra Combs. “I have never felt better, and that even means better in my 40s than in my 20s.”

Although every shake differs in macronutrients and ingredients, there are dozens of options on the market. Shakeology, one of the most popular shakes, contains a multitude of vitamins, minerals, antioxidants, digestive enzymes and is also a pre and probiotic that has protein.

“I would pay double for the shakes. They have seriously changed my life. I am not a morning person or a coffee drinker, and my shake is what starts my day each morning. It keeps me regulated and helps with my mental clarity and to be sure my body is getting the nutrients it needs each day,” said Shakeology Beachbody Coach Cassie Zeider. “$129.99 is the retail cost, but you can get 10 percent

off if you become a club member, and you can get 25 percent off if you become a coach. The bag comes with 30 servings.”

But are these shakes really worth the price tag? To busy people looking for an easy, nutrition-dense meal without having to spend hours planning and preparing a dish, they are.

“Our protein shakes are more than worth the price tag,” said Executive Regional Vice President of Arbonne International Geist resident Lynda Theis. “They taste good which in the world of protein shakes is a huge accomplishment. They offer solid nutrition, and the products offer a better alternative to refuel your muscles after a workout, whether you are an Olympic athlete, a college athlete, someone who works out regularly or even the weekend warrior.”

Beyond this, Theis argues that if used to replace meals, the shakes can actually save money by reducing the monthly grocery bill and potentially saving hundreds of dollars in medical expenses. In Theis’ opinion, nothing is more valuable than good health.

“If the end result is that you can think more clearly, get better results from your workouts, feel better and look better, you will save hundreds of dollars in doctor visits,” said Theis. “When you are not spending your money feeding your sugar cravings or driving through a fast food window to satisfy those cravings, you save money that can be spent actually enjoying your life. Who knows, maybe even a vacation?”

Although the shakes may be an easy, nutritious alternative, they are not a long-term solution in the opinion of some nutritionists.

“There is definitely a craze right now with all the meal replacement shakes on the market,” said Michelle Graves, nutritionist at Hancock Wellness Center. “My passion is to educate others on making good, healthy food choices with real, whole food. These products may be a good short term option for those who tend to skip meals or don’t get a balanced diet, but you really need to think about the sustainability factor. Will you be drinking this shake 10 years from now? Probably not. Are these products bad? No, they aren’t bad. Many of them provide good nutrition, but it is better to learn how to eat real, solid food for the long term to get the nutrients that we need. Parents are also role models for their children, so this is especially important as you are training them how to eat.”

So the question as to whether these shakes are worth the craze is still in the air. But if you are looking for a kick start to your year, consider trying meal replacement shakes along with healthy eating and exercise to reach your goals.

A visit to the Penrod Arts Fair is a family tradition for me and my wife, Jeanne, each fall. This past year, we moved into a new home, so we were in the market for some new artwork.

Shopping the hundreds of art exhibits, Jeanne walked by one tent and stopped in her tracks to say, “I want that painting!” It was an abstract painting of a turbulent sky over dark water (at least that is what I saw), and the colors and mood of the painting were perfect for our home. I snapped a photo on my phone, and we proceeded to tour the rest of the grounds at the Indianapolis Art Museum.

Marisabel Segovia, an 18 year-old artist and senior at Carmel High School.

Page 46: Geist Magazine February 2016

46 / GEIST MAGAZINE / FEBRUARY 2016 / atGeist.com

When we returned back to the tent, the painting was gone. A lady in the tent explained that someone had purchased that painting just five minutes before we returned. Jeanne was devastated but assured by the young lady staffing the booth that the artist could commission something similar for us. She wrote a cell phone number on the back of the Magdelana Gallery of Art business card, and we returned home empty handed.

A few weeks later, Jeanne sent a text message to the artist. She arrived at our front door the following week to view our home and measure the space for the painting. Opening the door, Jeanne was greeted by a mother-daughter duo.

“Hello Jeanne, my name is Magdalena Segovia, and this is my daughter Marisabel,” she said. “My daughter is the artist.”

Jeanne was floored. Out of all the artists on display at Penrod, we probably chose the youngest artist to commission our first painting for our home.

Marisabel is an 18-year-old senior at Carmel High School. She is a manager at the Monon Center for lifeguards, is involved in student government, teaches art classes, dances and paints in her spare time. This fall, Marisabel will attend Indiana University where she will major in biology, but she’s determined to go to Purdue and go into engineering.

“I don’t want to make painting my job,” she said. “I wouldn’t want to take away from any of the happiness that painting brings me.”

Marisabel recently delivered the painting entitled “Creating Sky,” a sibling to “Dreamer’s Sky” that we loved so much at Penrod. It’s the perfect accent piece to our new home, hanging in the dining room right off the front door entry.

To view other paintings by Marisabel or other artists in the Magdelana Gallery of Art in Carmel, visit magdalenagallery.com or call 317-841-0005.

“He is a completely different kid now. He does his homework after school before I even see him. It changed his life. It changed our whole household.”

These are the words Sheryl Shepherd used to describe the results she saw after her son Grant finished a program at LearningRx. Prior to LearningRx, Grant’s parents, Sheryl and Randall, were in a constant battle to get Grant to do his homework. Grant’s frustration with school work placed a strain on Grant and the whole family. The fact that Grant’s parents always knew he had the ability but felt that something was missing just made the situation even more frustrating.

Grant, like many other 11-year-olds, received good grades in math and some of his other subjects but really struggled with reading. While he could read the written words, Grant’s lack of focus and concentration impaired his ability to comprehend and recall what he had read.

Grant’s difficulties became very apparent as he reached the fourth grade where the amount of homework increased significantly, and he started receiving letter grades. Randall said, “It was a big battle every night to get his homework done.”

The Shepherds even hired two tutors, who were trained educators, just so Grant could get his homework completed. While the tutors helped Grant deal with specific lessons, they did nothing to sharpen his cognitive skills. The Shepherds’ frustration just went on and on unabated throughout the year.

Finally, the Shepherds contacted LearningRx, and Grant started in April. The Shepherds decided to enroll Grant in LearningRx because they had seen first-hand a nephew who had experienced a terrific improvement in his cognitive abilities as a result of the LearningRx program.

After going to LearningRx three nights a week, Grant’s reading ability increased significantly. The reading improvement was not a result of being tutored in reading at LearningRx, but a result of improving cognitive skills that result in greater focus and concentration. Grant’s grades in reading have improved significantly, and his frustration with school has eased considerably.

Recently, Grant did something that he never did before. He chose to read a book on his own. Life is now better for Grant and the whole Shepherd family.

Grant is a talented young athlete and a terrific pitcher. So talented he was chosen from 2,500 boys to be a member of the Game Day USA Team that will be competing in Florida in a few weeks. Some of his games will be televised on ESPN.

An unintended consequence of the training he received at LearningRx is an improvement in Grant’s performance in sports. Grant’s father noticed that the increased focus and concentration that Grant developed to improve his schoolwork has also made Grant an even better baseball player.

LearningRx is different from other programs that “tutor” its students. Rather than tutoring on a particular subject, the LearningRx program provides a cognitive framework that people can use for the rest of their lives.

According to Heather Koenig, executive director and owner of LearningRx in Indianapolis, “Many learning problems are caused by inefficiencies in how the brain actually processes information, things like memory attention and processing speed. We aren’t tutoring which will only offer temporary help if there are underlying cognitive deficiencies. We are brain trainers offering a solution to learning struggles.

“We help children and adults and can assist people with traumatic brain injury, stroke, ADHD, dyslexia, autism, auditory processing disorder, learning difficulty and those who just want to get a sharper competitive edge.”

If you want to give your child or other loved one the tools and training to help them reach their learning potential, call LearningRx for an evaluation appointment today.
