5. As approved nderFinalDesign, heRetrievalShaflwill be46 feet n length,40 eetwide andr'vill extend38 feet rom thesurfaceof the roadwaymedian o the tunnelsbelow. TheRetrievalShaftwill be excavatedrom the surface, nd he shaft will be constructed singsecant iles(which areconcrete vith reinforcingsteel),steelbeamsandsteelplating.

In planninganddesigninghe centralSubr,vay roject,the SFMTA determined t leastas eariyas 2A05-2006hat theTBMs would be removed rom the ground hrougha retrievalshaft,sothat he esale r reuse alueof theTBMs at theconclusion f tunneling ctivitieswould not be ostorwasted,hereby educingconstruction osts. The SFMTA alsodetermined hat t would not procurethe TBMs itself' but would require he Contractor o do so,so that thecontractorwould be responsiblefor maintenancend repair,anddelay o construction ostsarising rom TBM f-ailure r breakdown.
