MUMBAI, May 13:

A special court here has issueda public notice to fugitive diamondmerchant Nirav Modi, wanted inIndia for alleged fraud and moneylaundering in the PNB scam case,asking why his properties shouldnot be confiscated under theFugitive Economic Offenders(FEO) Act.

Special Judge V C Barde hasalso asked Modi to appear beforethe court on June 11. The court said

if the accused failed to appear, itwill proceed with action againsthim under the FEO Act.

The special court had inDecember 2019 declared NiravModi a fugitive economic offender,on a plea of the EnforcementDirectorate (ED), which is conduct-ing a probe into the case.

"I, V C Barde, Special Judge,PMLA, 2002 and FugitiveEconomic Offenders Act, 2018,issue NOTICE to you to showcause as to why the properties men-

tioned in the application (ED'splea), in which you have pecuniaryinterest and/or otherwise, shouldnot be confiscated under the saidAct," the recent notice said. A simi-lar notice was also issued to NiravModi's wife Ami, sister Purvi andbrother-in-law Maiank Mehta.

The investigating agency hasalleged that Nirav Modi and hisuncle Mehul Choksi, in con-nivance with certain bank offi-cials, allegedly cheated the PunjabNational Bank (PNB) to the tune

of Rs 14,000 crore throughissuance of fraudulent Letters ofUndertaking (LoUs). The LoUswere allegedly issued in a fraudu-lent manner by a Mumbai branchof the PNB to a group of compa-nies belonging to Nirav Modisince March 2011, till the casecame to light. (PTI)
