LETTER from the PRESIDENTDear Fellow Members,

Hopefully you were able to take advantage of the improved weather in July to spend time at your club; and we all look forward to much more of the same in August and September.

With an ideal field of 72 teams, the Men’s Member-Guest kicks off Wednesday of this week with registration, a practice round, and dinner, followed by three days of tournament play; and concluding Saturday evening with the dinner party.

The golf course continues to improve weekly and is playing great. Please take care of this gem and repair any pitch marks you see and replace and/or repair all divots. A great benchmark for repairing any divot is to ask yourself if you could hit from that same spot the next day. Kindly be mindful that practicing repetitive shots on the course is prohibited.

Congratulations are in order for major tournament winners over the past week! Jim Marusich won the Men’s Club Championship by two strokes over runner-up Kyle McKillop in a very exciting finish, which was not decided until the 18th hole on the final day. Rick Keding and his team of Sal Peratore Jr, Gary Warfle, and Charles Morgan tied for 1st place at -26 with the team of Kevin Savage, Carl Roma, Lou Panigrosso, and Mike Pandich in the BCC Pro-Member! Our BCC Ladies’ 5-Club Team earned a decisive win in two days of competitive four ball matches over the weekend here at BCC! Outstanding play by all of you

The Board of Governors has appointed Tim Schum Club Historian. We appreciate Tim’s willingness and enthusiasm to follow the years of fine work by Dick Ringwood, in continuing to chronicle BCC’s past and present. You’ll find his first contribution in this Forecast detailing our course architect A.W. Tillinghast’s induction into the World Golf Hall of Fame. On a side note, a few weeks ago I was delighted to play two rounds at Spring Lake Golf Club in Spring Lake, NJ, just a mile from the Atlantic Ocean. A.W. Tillinghast also designed this course in 1918, three years before he did BCC. It is a big beautiful course where they have just removed 750 trees and replaced them with natural areas of heather, fescue, and sand to restore it to its original layout.

At last year’s annual meeting I commented on potential gifting to BCC. Whether an outright gift, a memorial gift, or an estate gift, BCC sincerely welcomes your generosity now and in the future. In last month’s Forecast I outlined the major capital expenditures that have been absolutely necessary in 2015. There remains a long list of capital improvements that will also be needed in the short term… including projects on the golf course, in the clubhouse, and around our other structures including the pool area to preserve and enhance our assets. Our annual operating budget simply cannot support these expenditures; therefore your consideration of any financial gift is truly appreciated.

Lastly please note that our annual meeting this year is scheduled for Wednesday, November 18th. We have moved it forward one week as to not conflict with the Thanksgiving holiday.

See you at the club soon!Steve Scoville

T he month of July was extremely busy with the majority of our golf tournaments being played in a two week window. I would like to

first congratulate Dr. Jim Maursich on winning his first Club Championship defeating Kyle McKillop by two strokes. Our 18 Hole Ladies won the annual 4 Club defeating the ladies from Tradition, En-Joie and Endwell Greens along with hosting the event.

During our annual Pro Member PGA Professional Mark Tucker tied our course record with a 63 which included 2 three putts and a hole in one. The top two teams were Rick Keding, Sal Peretore Jr., Gary Warfle and Charles Morgan they tied Kevin Savage, Carl Roma, Mike Pandich and Lou Panigrosso.

The golf course was in top condition during all these events and received great reviews from the visiting Pros during the Pro Member. Rocco and his crew are working very hard to keep the course

LETTER from the GENERAL MANAGERin tournament condition on a weekly basis.

We continue to offer happy hour on Friday nights, themed dinner specials and other dining options for your convenience. I know it is difficult competing against all the outdoor options in the summer months but the upper patio on a nice night is a great option. We have been busy on Friday nights so if you are thinking of coming up please call for a reservation so we can be ready to service you.

We have over 100 members that have downloaded Clubster which is a great vehicle for communicating with the club. If you have not already signed in call the office for more information.

We have one month of summer left so come up and enjoy the Club.

Fortunately, July 22nd was a picture perfect day for our Member Guest Tournament. We all enjoyed the Hawaiian themed decorations, food, music and of course the specialty cocktail. The event was enjoyed by all who attended and a we would like to thank the committee; Patty Dowd, Sue Klucka, Roberta Westfall and Patty Molinaro, for a job well done.

On August 5th the ladies are planning a “Road Trip” to play at Traditions at the Glen. We again invite anyone that is interested in joining us on Wednesday mornings, to call the Pro Shop.

Our Member Guest committee (from left to right) Sue Klucka, Roberta Westfall Patty Dowd, and Patty Molinaro, did a fabulous job!

Once again, the Tuesday weather challenged our golf schedule. However, the exciting event for the month of July was the annual Women’s Cup Challenge (WCC), held on July 21st and 22nd. Teams consisted of the Americans vs. the Europeans with a total of 8 ladies on each team. The WCC event ended in a celebration dinner on Wednesday evening after golf.

The American team was down 17 points after Tuesday’s play and came back to win on Wednesday by one point. Thanks to our captains, Mary Serafini, for the American Team, and Fran Scoville for the European Team, in overseeing the event.

The annual Member Guest Tournament is scheduled for July 30th. Results will be noted in the September Forecast.

Binghamton Country Club Club Invitational

TILLINGHAST HoNoRED By Tim Schum

Renowned golf course ar-chitect A.W. Tillinghast whose designs include the

Binghamton Country Club, was among those recently inducted into the World Golf Hall of Fame. The ceremony was held July 13 in conjunction with the British Open Golf Tournament at St. Andrews, Scotland.

Tillinghast was inducted posthu-mously and the release announc-ing his induction noted that “per-haps [the honor] was overdue.”

He was accompanied into the World Hall along with major champions Mark O’Meara and Da-vid Graham of Australia as ell as women’s champion Laura Davies of England.

Tillinghast, who studied under Old Tom Morris, was honored for the designing a number of outstand-ing golf courses, including several that have hosted various United States championships. While he is credited with the design of over 250 courses, those most notewor-thy include such world famous courses such as Winged Foot, Bal-tusrol, Bethpage Black, Ridgewood and the San Francisco Golf Club.

Founded in April of 1889, our Binghamton Country Club is not-ed as one of the country’s oldest golf courses having celebrated its 125th anniversary last summer. It was originally located at a site east of the present Union-Endicott High School.

In 1920, in anticipation of a surge in golf interest, the BCC Board of Governors hired Tillinghast to se-lect a site for the construction of a new golf course and clubhouse. While visiting the community that year, A.W. rejected several loca-tions before settling on the tract of land that today is bisected by Rob-inson Hill Road, noting “I consid-ered this site one of the very best which it has been my pleasure to examine in a long time.”

Supervised throughout it con-struction by Tillinghast, the course and present clubhouse opened for play in August, 1923.

BCC was among a host of other re-gional courses that were designed by Tillinghast. In particular the

Elmira Country Club has his im-print while several Pennsylvania courses, including Fox Hills in Scranton and Shawnee-On-the Delaware (in the Stroudsburg area and his very first design), were other creations.

While as a noted short-hitting amateur golfer himself, “Tillie” designs featured courses that fa-vored accurate driving and pin-point shots to undulating greens where scoring demanded a fine touch with one’s chipping or put-ting clubs.

Due to manpower and fiscal short-ages, several original BCC bunkers were discarded during World War II. Subsequently a few green de-signs, particularly on holes num-bered two and six have been re-shaped while a tree-planting surge has changed what was formerly a wide open course layout.

Currently the BCC Board of Gov-ernors is seeking to return the course to its original Tillinghast design with a tree removal and green expansion among the most recent steps in that direction.

In recognition of his association with our golf course, Paul Dil-lon’s portrait of A.W.Tillinghast is found at the upstairs entrance to BCC. The painting was funded through events that included a golf outing at Winged Foot and is ded-icated to the memory of stalwart BCC member, Joe Ippinger.

Tillinghast was honored for the designing a number of outstanding golf courses,
