A community kitchen is a public space where people get together and cook on a regular basis. Community kitchens offer the opportunity to share skills, socialize, and reduce costs by purchasing collectively.

The Hamilton Prenatal Nutrition Program (HPNP) links 9 weekly groups throughout Hamilton. Each group is facilitated by a Community or Public Health Dietitian and a Public Health Nurse. The Healthy Moms Healthy Babies (North Hamilton Community Health Centre) and Welcome Baby Program (Hamilton Public Health Services) share funding from the Canada Prenatal Nutrition Program (CNCP). Participants learn about healthy pregnancy, healthy eating, breastfeeding, infant feeding, and healthy lifestyles. Participants also receive peer support, a snack or light meal, a grocery gift card, bus tickets, referrals to community resources, one-on-one counselling as required, and child-minding for children less than 6 years of age.Cost: None. Guidelines: Must be pregnant to register and can only register with one weekly group. A participant graduates when her infant reaches 6 months of age.

If you’re interested in policy development and food system planning, the City of Hamilton has a Community Food Security Stakeholder Committee. They work on policy, education, and infrastructure to support a sustainable, local food system.
