This is now the 2nd week of Lent, traditionally for the church a 40 dayseason of self-examination, penitenceand fasting. After a year of Covidrestrictions, I’m sure that is the lastthing any of us, Christian or not, need!Prolonged periods of lock-down haveallowed us all enforced time alone toponder the meaning of life, and ourown place in the great scheme ofthings. Nonetheless, this is still a timewe can try to refocus on what isimportant in our lives, with perhaps aparticular emphasis on healthy andsustainable eating (especially if, likeme, enforced time at home hasencouraged to bake, then eat, extracakes and biscuits!)

As indeed last year, Shrove Tuesdayand Ash Wednesday have passed usby with meeting anyone outside ourown household forbidden. No carnival, parades or parties for Mardi Gras –‘Fat Tuesday’ – when in olden days allthe rich food was used up before theabstinence of the Lenten weeks.Somehow pancakes on my own didn’thave the appeal of watching thequeue in Findon church, with Chris atthe crѐpe maker, as I waited till theend hoping there would be one left forme! Hopefully next year…. Unable tooffer ‘ashing’ as a symbol ofrepentance and turning back to Christ, pebbles marked with a cross wereavailable at the lych gate of each ofour three churches. I hope these helpyou as a focus for prayer during Lent.Historically, candidates were giveninstruction in the weeks before Easter,

in preparation for their baptism onEaster Sunday in a glorious Service oflight and joy. Congregation memberswould join in this preparation bythemselves undertaking study (thereason we hold Lent Study Groupstoday) and repentance over a periodof 40 days, recalling the time Jesusspent alone in the desert after hisbaptism by his cousin John, fastingand overcoming temptation in thewilderness by Satan with scripturereferences. Our Diocesan Bishops willbe holding Services of Baptism andConfirmation at various venues afterEaster, so if anyone is interested inthis, please contact me at the Rectory!

Again, traditionally, the question isposed, ‘What have you given up forLent this year?’ Year-long restrictionshave meant we have all given up somuch of what we enjoy already, so mysuggestion is that we all try to dosomething more during Lent this year. This could be as simple as getting upa little earlier every day and using that5-10 minutes to reflect or pray, thinking of all who are dear to you butfor the time being you are unable tomeet up with, and wishing them well.In our villages we have so much to bethankful for – good neighbours, ourlocal shops, our health service – andallowing a few minutes just to bethankful instead of starting the dayfeeling negative can make a hugedifference to each day.

As I write, we are still unable topromise what we will be allowed to

offer in the way of live Services in ourchurches this month, but we haveresumed our 8am Traditional Servicealternating between Clapham andFindon churches, and the main mid-morning Services will start again in allthree churches from March 7th, now thatmany people have had the firstvaccination and infection numbers arefalling. I am hopeful that there will bethe opportunity to rejoice together withthanksgiving on Easter Sunday, April4th, as we give thanks that Jesus Christis risen, death is defeated and we allhave the promise of eternal life throughfollowing Christ. Thankfully manypeople have had the first dose of

vaccine and as hospital admissionscontinue to fall, restrictions willgradually be lifted. We must all remainmindful of what we have learnt throughthis past year, namely the necessity toconsider the welfare and well-being ofothers before our own wants! As longas everyone everywhere is able to dothis, then I believe we will gradually seea welcome return to the social side oflife, with hospitality venues being ableto open once again.

Every blessing, Helena

If you are a regular visitor to our shop -and we certainly hope you are – you areprobably well aware of the enormousrange we carry. There are literallythousands of different items from dailyessentials to baking ingredients, frozenand chilled foods, special sweets, cakes, biscuits and treats, cards andgifts and a surprising variety of practicalitems. Only last week a customercommented “I needed a fuse andcouldn’t believe it when I saw them onthe shelf!” We are especially grateful toBecky Fagan, our buyer and displayguru, who has ensured we are fullystocked with cards and gifts for Mother’sDay on 14th March. Both Becky andDeputy Manager Helen Morris havesourced tempting chocolate eggs, unusual novelties and cards for Easter. Some of the decorative items will besold for Charity, as they were atChristmas. On top of this, Beckysupplies all the plants that lend such abright and colourful approach to theshop. Even on a normal basis, theamount of stock means that our poor oldshed is often crammed to bursting! It isshowing signs of age, leaksoccasionally and could do with anupgrade. Any suggestions gratefullyreceived!

Steve Smith, our Chairman, reports thatthe long awaited shop awning shouldhopefully be installed this month, readyfor longer days and warmer weather. He also informs us that our new onlineordering service is currently beingpiloted in the hope that it will be up andrunning later in March. There will be

more information about this in Steve’smonthly bulletin to shareholders so dolook out for that; the service has taken ahuge amount of time and effort to set upand deserves to be very popular.

Given the toll of the pandemic, it maynot come as a surprise to learn thatalcohol sales in January, normally aquieter month, were significantlyincreased this year. We all share asense of relief that the vaccinationprogramme is allowing us finally to lookforward with hope to the summer andknow how much our regular volunteersand indeed customers are lookingforward to returning. Meanwhile, weowe a huge debt of gratitude to all thosewho have taken on extra shifts to see usthrough, particularly to our new recruitswho learned the ropes incredibly quicklyand have contributed so much of theirtime. We are always delighted to hearfrom villagers who may be consideringjoining the band of volunteers, so don’thesitate to approach any shop staff ifyou are interested.

May I first wish fellow residents ofFindon a happy new year, be it astrange one. I also thank friends andneighbours for the get well wishes whenI spent a month in hospital beforeChristmas with a broken hip due to anunlucky fall. I was home for Christmasthen, in the new year, I reached my 92nd

birthday. Once again I thank friendsand family for making it a special day inspite of lockdown. I even had myrequest of the day for a McDonald’shappy meal with toy!

We are now in lockdown again and Ithought of a lockdown of sorts Findonhad in the 1940s. Weeks before D Daythousands of troops were gathered inour corner of Sussex. Non-residentswere not supposed to enter the area. For some reason my mother lent myidentity card to a soldier’s wife whowanted to return here from London. This she did, but she lost my card. Iwas given a replacement, which wasblue instead of beige. My old numberwas ENMA3 and the new on wasYENN1067819. I have no idea why Istill remember those numbers today.

On D Day all the soldiers and tankswere gone but Findon was left with a

number of damaged walls where thetanks had little space to get through thelanes and narrow roads.

NoteApparently, the colour of identity cardsissued to adults changed from beige toblue in 1943. They had previously beenthe same colour for both adults andchildren. People were required to carryidentity cards until 21 February 1952.The National Registration Act of 1939was repealed on 22 May 1952. Editor

Findon Parish Council (FPC) is close tocompleting stage 2 of its tree felling andmanagement program and many of youwill have noticed the sad loss of anumber of trees. Up to 20% ofdeciduous trees in West Sussex are ashand up to 80% of these may suffer fromash dieback. It is our aim to removethose clearly infected and limit spread.

This naturally leaves several glaringgaps but FPC has moved quicklycreating a nursery of some 300 saplingsof varieties including beech, field maple, oak and rowan. So far, 30 trees havebeen planted at various locations acrossFindon.

Findon Village Hall will act as a pollingstation in the upcoming May 2021elections following some work andassessment. It is good to see the hallbegin to resume its role as a central partof our village.

Repairs to the road surface in Nepcotehave been completed by West Sussex

County Council and whilst there havebeen comments as to the patch worknature of those repairs, conditions fordriving are markedly improved.

FPC continues to make progress withproposed Homewood Play Arearenovation and is now in discussion withArun District Council who own the land,to move forward.

FPC has agreed the Preceptrequirement for the financial year2021/22 and submitted this to ArunDistrict Council. Our aim was to coverall requirements within current budgetlimits for 2021 and we are delighted thatthis is the case. The Precept remains at£47k which equates to an amount of£48.16 per annum for a Band Dequivalent.

Cllr Sean SmithChairman, Findon Parish Council

Having been born in Findon I am alwaysinterested in the Findon News. I knowthe horse crossing sign on the A24,which was featured last month. Alanand Dinah Alton had a racing stable atThe Vale and when Alan died his sonDavid took over. The horses would

cross the A24 at the south end of TheVale. They made a walk way betweenthe footpath and the field between thetrees, walking north and they came outat the bottom of Nepcote. At the timethere was a gate at the north end of thetrack. I hope this is some help.

Regrettably the committee has, withheavy heart, had to cancel this year’sSpring Flower Show once again.Restrictions on meetings will not beeased any time soon and the village hallremains closed for the immediate future.

Life at the moment seems to be horriblylike Groundhog Day, but spring is on itsway and we will be able to get out in ourgardens and make plans for thesummer. We remain hopeful thatmonthly meetings can resume in the not

too distant future and that we will beable to hold the Summer Show inAugust.

PS I was gardening recently and hearda very familiar sound. Yes, he’s back –my little winged tormentor! Theblackbird that does an impression of anambulance siren is at it again. I think Imay have to resort to earplugs in thegarden.

To All Findon ResidentsThe Findon Sheep Fair committee havebeen meeting since January looking athow we can hold a show on the 11thSeptember 2021 which will followGovernment guidelines and beapproved by WSCC’s events Covidassessment team. We will also seek toobtain a “Good To Go” accreditation.

The idea being proposed for one yearonly, is to hold a much smaller showwith sheep judging, and sociallydistanced craft stalls. There will also beone or two refreshment outlets alongwith some small side shows, togetherwith a limited number of attractions.

We have decided not to have amarquee or events which would attractpeople to congregate in a small area, forexample, the Friday & Saturday nightbands, the normal arena, the DancingSheep Show. Although not certain,Harris’s Fun Fair are also unlikely toattend.

We are looking at a managed, timed,"Advance ticket only" entry via thesheep fair website for 1500 people

which will also provide us with the abilityto record for track and trace systempurposes. For this exceptional year, asmall fee of £2.50 is being considered tooffset the losses that will be incurreddue to additional Covid-19 costs and themuch-reduced income from the event. All further costs, which have beenestimated to excess £2,000, will betaken from our reserve funds or coveredby further sponsorship. The ticket wouldalso serve as an entry into a Sheep FairRaffle.

Marketing the Findon Sheep Fair as asmaller event will be a key aspect in thepublicity for this year’s show.We very much value the views of theresidents of Findon and would like yourfeedback. Please fill in this slip below by Monday8th March and either return to a"Findon Sheep Fair Box" in the VillageShop

Our WI continues to hold monthlymeetings via Zoom. Our Februarymeeting was a presentation about thework of the Trussell Trust and theWorthing Food Bank

The Trussell Trust oversees andsupports the work of over 1200 FoodBanks around the country whichprovide emergency food to people incrisis. Their clients are referred by localagencies such as Social Workers, DebtAdvice Services, Citizen’s AdviceBureaux and Health Visitors. In thesevery challenging times the TrussellTrust Food Banks have been a lifelineto more families than ever before. Lastyear Worthing Food Bank provided2184 people with emergency food for 3days and in January 2021they provided emergency food to 273people. This monthly number was onlyexceeded in May 2020 when theyprovided food to 326 people. The FoodBanks rely on donations fromsupermarkets and monetary donationsfrom individuals with a team ofvolunteers fulfilling roles within theservice such as befrienders, who helpand speak to clients when they arrive atthe centre; and bag packers who puttogether food and toiletry packages.During these difficult times Food Bankshave had to operate very differently, using volunteer drivers to ensure foodand toiletries are delivered safely.Worthing Food Bank works with local

schools and organisations to raiseawareness and organise collections offood and toiletries to support peoplereferred to them in times of crisis.

If you would like to donate toiletriesplease leave them in the box outsidemy house (7 The Chase). Washing upliquid, shaving foam, toothpaste andtoothbrushes, shower gel and toiletrolls all welcome

Our March Zoom meeting is a quiz -Thursday 11th March 7.30pm

As the case numbers fall and thevaccination numbers rise we havereason to be hopeful for some easingof restrictions this Spring with moresunshine and less rain!

The Village Hall, of course, remainsclosed for the moment but that does notmean that nothing is going on! I hope youhave all received a leaflet highlighting ourneed to recruit two new committeemembers to cover the secretary andbooking secretary roles and I amdelighted to report that the campaignwas successful and two new memberswill be joining in the over the next fewweeks. I should like to take thisopportunity to thank the retiring membersJames Heasman (acting chair then actingsecretary, Tina Bedford (secretary) andTomas Heasman (booking secretary).Their work is much appreciated.

Some of you will be aware that there hasbeen some animated discussion in thevillage about the forecast costs forfinishing the hall extension. This is muchtoo complex a topic to cover in the limitedspace available here – involving as itdoes both the Village hall Trust and theParish Council. Therefore, acomprehensive statement has beenprepared and can be found on the VillageHall homepage -https://www.findonvillagehall.com Ishould also mention that the highestnumbers being discussed are architect’sworst case estimates and include (ofcourse) a contingency allowance.

We have also had some issues with wetrot under the floor of the foyer area andthis has been addressed at minimal cost. There will be a temporary (but perfectlyuseable) floor for a few months so thatwe can lift it and confirm that the watersource has been correctly identified too. That done, we need only lay the vinyllayer to finish the floor.

There was some surprise, not leastamong the Hall committee, when thearrangements for the May elections wereannounced, to find that the Village Hallwas not being used as a polling stationthis time and Findon residents would beexpected to travel to the Clapham andPatching polling station in order to vote. After some fairly intensivecommunications we were delighted toachieve the re-instatement of our VillageHall onto the polling station list andFindon residents WILL be able to vote inthe Village Hall on May 6th.

Of course, the question we all love toable to answer is WHEN can we re-openthe Hall? At the time of writing, it lookslike the earliest date might be May 17th (ifI have interpreted the PM’sannouncement correctly!) and this issubject to all the caveats the governmenthas outlined. Whether this might be apartial or a full re-opening remains to beseen and, in any case, the committeewould reserve the right to proceedcautiously, should that seem wise.

In the meantime, we will continue workingwith the Parish Council to try and resolvethe issues with the Hall extension; toprepare for the re-opening so that we canmake the smoothest, fastest progresspossible, given that the target could stillbe moving; initiate the process ofupdating the structure of the FindonVillage Hall Trust into the updated CharityCommission preferred arrangement; and,of course, to get on with the other thingsthat still have to be done regardless ofwhether the hall is open or not.

Every one of our cat pens is occupiedand we have 12 cats in all. For threedays in a row a cat has arrived. Thefirst cat's owner moved leaving the catbehind, the next one is poorly and theowner cannot manage to give it the 14pills a day that it needs. The last onearrived yesterday because the owner is93 years old and extremely ill and hasbeen admitted to Worthing Hospital.

Giving medication is time-consumingand hard work. Two hens have coughsand have medicine night and morning, aguinea-pig has almost recoveredafter twice daily antibiotics and painkillers. I make a cocktail of all the sevenpills the cat with kidney problems needsin a pipette twice a day, he has had allthe tests and a scan. He hates thefood the Vet recommends and he willnot eat it. Also, our Pony Elvis islimping badly again. He is having fourpainkillers every morning and four everynight. I have to crush them and hidethem with Polo mints in his food. Elvis ishaving another x-ray this comingMonday morning. Having a plate put inhis shoulder was not a successfuloperation and weekly acupuncture hasnot seen an improvement. Afterfinishing giving all the animals theirmedication this morning we thendiscovered four of the hens have scalylegs and all needed their legs sprayed. They were not very happy! Last weekwe had two more hamsters in and thenext day two gerbils; kids soon tire ofthem. I always tell the parents "Don't getthem a pony!”

Even though I turn off the water to theSanctuary every night a few mornings

the pipes have been frozen, whichmeant going back and forth to the housefor water. Then wehad a burst pipe in the staff toilet, whichwas flooded. The next day my upstairstoilet cistern was dripping needing awasher, the carpet and underlay wasfloating and I am still trying to dry it out.I hope the weather forecast isn't true,my newspaper reported that the wholecountry is going to have a week of snowfirst week in March! I hope not - we allneed sunshine.

Sussex Police & Crime CommissionerKaty Bourne, in partnership with theAssociation of Police & CrimeCommissioners (APCC) has launchedtoday a national survey, designed tounderstand public perception of dogtheft, enforcement and the prosecutionof offenders.

The Home Secretary is currentlyreviewing the issue of pet theft andwhat future enforcement may look likewith potentially tougher penalties forperpetrators.

The responses to this survey will helpinform the discussions that PCCs willhave on this issue nationally and allowpolice forces to better understand thepublic’s views on this crime and howthey might improve their response tothose concerns.

Demand for dogs as pets hasincreased during the Coronaviruspandemic. The cost of some puppies,on Pets4Homes, is currently as high as£3,000, making them a valuablecommodity to criminals.According to Dog Lost, the UK's largestlost and found dog service, it isestimated thefts have risen by 250 percent, with criminal gangs involved.

Sussex Police & CrimeCommissioner Katy Bourne isspearheading the first nationalconversation with the public on thisissue as public perception and fearis growing to an all-time high. Shesays:“Pet theft, dog theft in particular, is agrowing concern for the public and theirfear has been perpetuated over the last

couple of weeks with shocking reportsin the media of more dogs beingsnatched by criminals.“I am incredibly eager to get moredetail around this issue and understandresidents’ views and if they feel morecould be done to respond to theirconcerns or for more preventativemeasures to be put in place to betterprotect their pets.

“I’m pleased to see the HomeSecretary recognising the devastatingimpact of this crime and I hope that theresults of this survey will give theGovernment the evidence it needs totake more robust action againstperpetrators.”

Sussex Police recorded 31 dog theftsin 2020 but at least 12 of those weredisputes over dog ownership betweenknown parties.

Inspector Andrea Leahy from theSussex Police Rural Crime Teamsaid: “We support this national surveyand the team are working tirelessly tocollate information and intelligence onthis worrying crime. We have dedicatedofficers covering the county who reviewevery report that comes into us. Wewould like to encourage the public toreport all suspicious circumstances andread our crime prevention advice onour website. We are dedicated tokeeping your pets safe and target anypersons believed to be involved in thisdistressing crime.”The 60-second survey will be openuntil 17:00 on Friday 12th March.HAVE YOUR SAY TODAY:

There will, however, be a small Eastergarden set up by the flower team. It willbe by the lych gate at Findon Parish

Church from 28th March - PassionSunday - when Jesus rode intoJerusalem on a donkey - untilEaster Monday.

Do come and see it if you’re out walkingon Church Hill. It would be lovely ifchildren brought a small jam jar offlowers or plant (about 4" tall) in a pot,or even a pebble to help decorate it.

The recent cold snap, combined with atrawl through some old familyphotographs, brought the winter of1962/63 back to mind. The Big Freeze,as it was known, was one of the coldestwinters on record in the UK and officiallythe coldest for 200 years. It started onChristmas Eve 1962, when it snowed inScotland and by Boxing Day it hadspread to the rest of the country, leaving30cm of snow over many parts. Ablizzard followed on 29 and 30December across Wales and south-west England, causing snowdrifts up to6 metres deep. Roads and railwayswere blocked, telephone lines broughtdown, and some villages were left cutoff for several days. The snow lastedfor two months and many areas werecovered until early March. Meanmaximum temperatures were below 0°Cin many places during the whole ofJanuary. Rivers, lakes and even thesea froze in some areas.

I grew up in a village just outside Cardiffand the photo shows me and the extentof the snow in that area. I rememberthe lanes leading to the village being fullof snow and nothing coming into or outof the village.

I can’t remember how long the villageschool was closed for, but I think it wasseveral weeks. The closure was due tonot only the difficulty of teachers andpupils getting to school, but also the factthat the school only had outside toiletsand they were completely frozen. Thisbeing before the digital age, oureducation during those weeks consistedof learning how to clear snow; where thebest places to go sledging were; and

how to make the best snowballs andsnowmen.

I also found evidence of our parents’strategy for entertaining children in the1960s - give them an old inner tube andplonk them on a hill. We used to spendhours seeing who could roll furthestbefore falling out. (Not very far if Iremember correctly!)
