We value the special gifts, personalities and experiences which they bring to us when they start school in our community. In 2013, Findon Primary School is again offering to these students a unique opportunity a gift of time. Students who require extra time and support will be offered the option of completing a second year in Prep in order to consolidate learning and establish positive routines and processes. With the benefit of extra time and focused instruction, it is anticipated that these students will develop literacy skills which will help them approach all their learning with confidence, success and enjoyment. It is important to Findon Primary School that all our students start their school life in such a positive light. The students who are completing the Two Year Prep Program will at all times be part of the whole Prep Group. They will be part of the literacy and numeracy program, participate in the Viaggetti learning journeys and attend all facets of the specialist programs with their Home Group. However, they will be monitored closely and at various times of the week they will be offered specialist support in the areas of phonemic awareness, phonological awareness, oral language development and beginning literacy development. These particular areas are considered critical for literacy success and for gaining access to achievement in general. The Two Year Prep Program is designed to be an alternative option for a small number of students who will benefit from extra time and support at the very beginning of their schooling. The parents of these children will be contacted next month. This week, the Prep/1 students visited our school crossing and were given instructions by Anthea Stingas, our crossing supervisor on the correct and safe way to cross. Please instill in your child the expectation that they must follow the directions of the crossing supervisor and always use the crossing if they need to get to the other side of the road. I know that it is sometimes quicker to cross elsewhere depending upon where your car is parked but this creates a danger when the road is so busy at that time. I have been horrified to see parents and children dodging between cars, with a car actually having to stop suddenly to avoid hitting a child. TERM 2, WEEK 4

FINDON PRIMARY TUESDAY MAY 8, 2012

FROM THE PRINCIPAL’S DESK

Welcome to our new students, Rhyleigh Nesci, Ming Dong, Anthony Lococo, Matthew Shanahan, Kamilia Hisyam and Kamil Hisyam.

Two Year Prep Support Program

At Findon Primary School, we celebrate the individuality of each and every one of our students. We value the special gifts, personalities and experiences which they bring to us when they start school in our community. As their parents, you are undoubtedly aware that your children develop at different rates and in different ways, and they enjoy your support and encouragement as they reach important milestones in their early years at home.

Once they are at school the more formal aspects of learning are introduced and children work with their teachers and peers to establish skills in literacy, numeracy and social interactions. At this point, the individuality in learning styles and rates become an important consideration in achieving success, confidence and the willingness to take risks.

As there are great differences in maturity, oral language, familiarity with literacy and numeracy and, for some children, readiness for school, it is difficult for some Prep students to achieve the expected outcomes as set out in the Victorian Essential Learning Standards (VELS) within the time frame of the school year.

In 2013, Findon Primary School is again offering to these students a unique opportunity – a gift of time.

These particular areas are considered critical

for literacy success and for gaining access to achievement in general.

The Two Year Prep Program is designed to be an alternative option for a small number of students who will benefit from extra time and support at the very beginning of their schooling.

The parents of these children will be contacted next month. We welcome inquiries and discussion and emphasise that the final decision of whether to take up the option of the Two Year Prep Program is left to parents. As always we remain dedicated to realising the best possible outcome for each and every one of our students at Findon Primary School.

Student Safety

Last week, the parking officer from the Whittlesea City Council was out and about at Findon checking that cars were parked appropriately and observing the signage around our school at the end of the school day. The signs are there to ensure the safety of our students and your children. Parking near the crossing obstructs the vision of other cars that are driving towards the crossing which then impacts on the safety of the pedestrians who use it and the crossing supervisor responsible for directing the traffic. Please ensure that you park in the correct locations. This will also ensure you avoid receiving an unwanted fine.

Our Prep/1 students learnt about the following rules;

- Stop. Look. Listen. Think.

- Wait behind the yellow line. - Walk your scooter/bike. - Wait for the whistle. - Stay between the white lines

Visit by School Reviewer

Last Thursday, I was delighted to be able to host a visit by our School Reviewer, Lawrie Drysdale. Lawrie is from the School of Education at Melbourne University, a lecturer who I got to know when I completed my Masters of Educational Leadership a couple of years ago. He has led a number of school reviews across Melbourne. Lawrie spent some time at Findon getting a feel of the culture of the school and meeting briefly with some classes and teachers. He took with him on the day our School Self Evaluation, which reflects our achievements and challenges over the period of the last Strategic Plan (2009- 2011) as well as school data such as student learning outcomes in VELS, NAPLAN data, our Annual Report to the School Community, our School Level Report and outcomes of Staff, Parent and Student surveys. Lawrie will return to Findon on Thursday, 5 June to formally meet with groups of staff, students and some parents to discuss our school’s progress and where our direction for the next four years may be. This is called a School Review Day. Lawrie was notably impressed with our school and stated that it was one of the best state primary schools that he had visited.

Release of New Masterchef Series

Keep your eyes on this release and you may see someone who you know! As part of the release, the show has a segment called ‘Where Are They Now?’ Fiona, our Stephanie Alexander Kitchen specialist, was invited to be part of this follow up as one of the selected ex contestants. Recently, Channel 10 visited Findon to interview Fiona and film her working with a group of our Year 4/5 students in the Kitchen. The release is scheduled for this Wednesday, 9 May at 8pm. We are also looking forward to the release of a children’s cookbook that Fiona has been working on over the last year. This will also include some of our students and their art work - drawings of fruit and vegetables.

Year 2 Sleepover

The Year 2 students had a wonderful time at their sleepover at school last Friday. After setting up their beds in the BER building, dinner was held in the Stephanie Alexander Kitchen. The disco was a popular event, followed by the evening walk where the students spotted bats and possums. Toasting marshmallows over the fire was a novelty enjoyed by all. The night concluded with a movie to get everyone settled into bed. Thanks to all the teachers in Learning Team 2 for their organisation of this successful evening and to Shelley and Gem for staying the night also.

Book Fair

What a fun week we had with the visit of Clifford the Big Red Dog making a number of guest appearances supporting our Book Fair. The students loved Clifford’s presence and joined in with the book readings at lunch time. All students had the opportunity to enter the colour in Clifford competition with the prize for each year level of a $10 voucher to purchase books from the Book Fair. The Book Fair provided students with a chance to buy some books for them to read, while at the same time fundraising for the school where we will purchase further literature material for the Library. Thanks to Shelley and Gabby for organising the Book Fair.

At Findon Primary School, our vision is that our children will become life-long learners with positive feelings of self-worth. As young adults they must be confident, tolerant, adaptable and resilient. They will be effective team members who understand their rights and responsibilities within the global community.

Fundraising

Many thanks to all the families who support the fundraising that is led by the Community Links Committee which consists of our Parent Reps led by Katie Hayes and Nicole Aiello. Last term the fundraisers were a sausage sizzle and the Easter raffle. These raised a total of $908.00.

This term, the fundraisers are our termly sausage sizzle, a Mother’s day stall and the Chocolate drive.

Last year, with your support, the Community Links Committee raised a fabulous total of $11,923.13. This will be put toward the new carpet in eight of our classrooms. The carpet is scheduled to be replaced during the next term holiday. I’m sure the students will be excited upon their return to school.

The Mother’s Day stall, planned for this Wednesday, always offers lovely gifts at such a reasonable price. This year, each gift will cost a mere $3. The Mother’s Day stall, which we regard more of a service to our community, is not one of our major fundraisers. If you are able to volunteer some of your time to the stall it would be greatly appreciated. Our major fundraisers this year are the Chocolate Drive, scheduled for this term and the DanceAthon, which will take place late in Term 3.

Student Engagement and Wellbeing

The value for the next three weeks is Honesty Honesty means always telling the truth and being able to be true to yourself, others and

situations. Using words at home that your child can understand will help explain what hon-

esty means in your family. Continue to remind your child: “If we have done something

dishonest, we own up to it, I might not like what you have to tell me, and there might be

a consequence, but I will respect you for telling the truth.”

The benefits of physical activity

Kids love to be active. Making physical activity a part of their daily routine is not only fun, but also healthy. Encouraging kids

to be active when they are young establishes a routine that could stay with them throughout their life.

Some of the benefits of physical activity and exercise for children include:

Improve cardiovascular fitness (heart and lungs)

Achieve and maintain a healthy weight

Improve posture

Better sleep

Boost self-esteem and confidence

Improve concentration

Help relaxation

Build strong bones and muscles

Improve balance and develop skills

Maintain and develop flexibility

Opportunities to make friends and enhance social skills.

REC O MM END ED AM OUN T Australia's Physical Activity Recommendations for 5–12 Year Olds state that kids need to do a minimum of 60

minutes of physical activity every day. But remember, more is better – even up to several hours! This can be built up

throughout the day with a combination of moderate to vigorous activities.

Thanks for taking the time to read our Student Wellbeing page—Niina Pilli

Once registered you can make bookings and cancellations,

view your statements and manage your details anytime of

the day online. Keep in mind we are able to take bookings

at short notice to help busy families.

CHILD CARE REBATES SCHEME:

The government rebate scheme is a good way of receiving

big discounts on the program.

For example let’s say you’re paying $18.00 on a permanent

booking per afterschool care session. You get the initial

50% rebate, that is worked on your entire wages. So if you

get rebate of 50% that means you pay $9.00 per session.

Now then you can get another rebate of 50%, that can be

deducted fortnightly by Camp Australia. That means your

total cost afterschool session based on $18.00 is reduced

further to $4:50 per session. Camp Australia will then bill

you for the $4.50.
