Where would we British be without ourWEATHER to talk about?! After thelongest hot, dry summer I can rememberfor ages (although not all over thecountry, just in the South) we now havetorrential rain as I write, very welcome forthe dusty plants and shrubs, not tomention the lawn which has seemed togreen before my eyes! The settled spellof course made our being in lock-downso much more pleasant and as weemerge gradually into whatever the ‘newnormal’ will be, I trust and pray that, likethe lawns, it will be a time of regrowthand new life for everyone.

It has been a joy to reconnect with ourParish family in our churches for worshiptogether, albeit without singing for now,but this week (mid-August) theregulations changed to allow for a smallgroup of singers, safely distanced, tolead live worship in our buildings.Hopefully it won’t be too long before thecongregation is allowed to join in withthem – we’ll wait and see. On the firstSunday in August, we had a ‘Songs ofPraise’ in Findon Church, with favouritehymns chosen and introduced byvillagers before we listened to arecording of each choice. Gerald’schoice, our final hymn, proved too muchfor everyone to stay silent, and it was souplifting to hear people humming alongeach in their own way to ‘How GreatThou Art’. We have a great God, whocares for each one of us, and I so lookforward to being able to sing out thewords to that hymn again at the top of myvoice, in thankfulness for all God’sblessings.

One of the challenges that came up aswe returned to church Services was howto manage paper; Orders of Service andhymnbooks in particular. We have beenusing a projector and temporary screenat Findon on the first Sunday of themonth for some time, and we’re in theprocess of applying for the necessarypermission from the Diocesan AdvisoryCommittee to install a drop down screenand permanent projector in the church, following informal advice from ourarchitect and the Diocese last year. Weare very fortunate in that a member of thecongregation has given us half the costof the equipment, so we are able toproceed once permission is granted.Should anyone else like to make acontribution, this would be very gratefullyreceived, as it would mean we need todip less into our reserves! Contact theParish Office for details.

To reassure traditionalists, having ascreen will not mean this is in use atevery Service in Findon, and when not inuse, the screen will retract against a roofbeam so it is barely visible. It willhowever mean we have more flexibility inour worship and will be able to projectimages sometimes during a sermon forexample, hopefully making it moreinteresting! It is also a positive move forthe younger members of ourcongregation, since similar technology isin everyday use in our schools andcolleges. At the moment, it would alsomean that we could play music clipsthrough the system (which will link to ourexisting system) replacing the singing ofhymns until we are permitted to sing inchurch again. continued on page 5

Installing this technology would alsomake our building more multi-functionalfor use outside worship. The schoolwould be able to use it rather than theold-fashioned acetates currently usedduring worship four times a year. Wemight also be able to show suitablefilms during holiday periods in thefuture, thus attracting more families intothe building

Finally, I’m sure you would all join withme in wishing our pupils and school

staff every blessing for the newacademic year in a very differentclimate to ever before, with the virus stillwith us as a nation and globally.Hopefully this coming school year willbe less stressful for everyone thanSpring/Summer 2020 has been. Mythoughts and prayers are with all pupilsstarting a new school this month and Iwish you all the best in your learning.

Every blessing, Helena

Beryl the van and I are home again, after an amazing visit to the WestSussex village of Findon.Findon is the nearest village to the6,000 year old ancient monument calledCissbury Ring. The site is on a large hillamid the Sussex Downs, from the top ofwhich, you can see for at least thirtymiles towards the coastal aspect. It isalso a SSSI, for plants and butterfliesetc.I walked all around this area for threedays and was amazed and delighted tosee so many butterflies, some which Ihave never seen before, as I come fromthe Peak DistrictAs I walked along the outer perimeter ofthe fort, on the earth battlements ofCissbury Ring, my imagination ran riot,in between spotting plants andbutterflies. I kept thinking, ‘If I were aStone-age chieftain, I know where Iwould plump for’. Subsequentgenerations of settlers there wouldprobably have had a good view of anyoncoming Romans etc. The history ofthe site is literally almost endless, withthe use of the site during more recentevents, such as the First and SecondWorld Wars. The village of Findon itself containsmany points of interest, including thevast village common with a‘Winterbourne’ pond - you see the treesand vegetation typical of a pond, but notthe water for the dry periods of the year. There is a large detached building onthe common, which at first sight lookedlike an nineteenth century workhouse, but turned out to be another historicallocal landmark, known as the Wattle

House (‘What’s a Wattle? Oh it rings abell from history lessons; wattle anddaub walls etc.’). The Wattle Housewas built by a local worthy (GeorgeHolford, Circa 1792-1802) who hadcornered the market literally, insupplying the wattle fencing used insheep markets and fairs held upon thecommon. The common has a huge beech treewhich threw me a bit. I tried to guess itsage, but was way out. I thought 100years, but it turned out to be planted in1981 to commemorate the wedding ofCharles, the Prince of Wales and LadyDiana Spencer! There is church of 11th century origin, dedicated to St. John the Baptist, whichis next to a large estate mansion calledFindon Place - which can be viewedfrom the public right of way, which leadsto the church. The church graveyard contains somemoving testimonies inscribed upon thegravestones, including one near theentrance to the church, which is thegravestone of the Pratt family. The son,who at just 19 years of age, died of hisinjuries on October 27th 1918 (only afew days before the end of the war), andalso his parents who survived him foranother 35 years. The public right of way path extendsalongside a large woodland, and thenbecomes a beautiful ‘green corridor’ ofbramble, spindle, dogwood, hawthorn, blackthorn, bindweed, elder, oak, ash, sycamore, and others too numerous totake in, for those who have not the timeto survey in detail.

There is a campsite just outside thevillage, which is set in farmland andwoodland. Findon has several pubsdoing food, and a community-ownedvillage shop, which doubles up as postoffice and newsagent.

Findon is a great place for a holiday, especially if you have a mountain bike,

as you can lose yourself on endlessfarm tracks on the Downs!

The Plunkett foundation, in conjunctionwith Citizens Advice, have been veryfocused in encouraging governmentalsupport for our Post Offices, especiallythose situated in rural areas. 74% ofrural Post Offices operate in acommunity that is without a bank. Afallout from Covid-19 is the continualexit of bank branches from the HighStreet.Citizens Advice has recently conductedthe most comprehensive research everinto Post Office banking. This researchconfirms that for many customers PostOffice banking is the only option open tothem. When Post Office services werestandardised prior to 2017 the provisionof high street banking services waspatchy. However the bankingframework agreement between the PostOffice and the banking industry nowenables 99% of UK personal bankingcustomers and 95% of businessbanking customers to access servicesat their local Post Office. This service isprovided mainly on an everyday bankingbasis, including services; cash

withdrawals, balance checking, chequeand cash deposits.Part of this research revealed that 70%of postmasters stated that pay rates forbanking do not cover the costs ofproviding the service and this iscertainly true for our own Post Office. An interesting statistic to come out ofthis research is that although many ofus are happy to use online banking,90% of the UK population uses a bankbranch at some point. It is alsoapparent that vulnerable groups aremost likely to use Post Office servicesweekly. Our village Post Office makes acommission based purely on thenumber of transactions (every balancecheck or stamp sold makes us money!).If we can all continue to use this vitalservice, coupled with support fromgroups such as Plunkett and CitizensAdvice, who put pressure on thegovernment to ensure the survival ofrural services, then hopefully we cancontinue to provide this service for manyyears to come.

We took in a cat after the owners movedaway leaving him behind. We hadhim neutered and treated for bad earmites, worms and fleas. We called himBob. Then a new volunteer came inand left the cattery doors open and hewas gone! We put posters upeverywhere. After spending weekslooking for Bob all over the village, hestarted to turn up every evening nearThe Oval. One of the neighbours wouldwait for him; she fed him and gave himwater, and the good news is he hasdecided to live with her. She said shedidn't really want a cat but Bob trustsher and has made himself at home withher, her husband, son, and their twodogs. So, grateful thanks Sarah.

After nine weeks at The Equine Hospitalour pony Elvis is back home, what aworry it has been. He had a plate put inhis shoulder, but he pulled the stitchesout with his teeth and had to go backinto surgery to be re-stitched. He thenhad a really bad infection that tookweeks of antibiotics and laser treatmentto try to clear up the infection. He is stillvery lame and has developed markedmuscle wastage and weakness in theshoulder and leg, so it is still difficult forhim to walk. He is having acupunctureevery week and still needsphysiotherapy. The bill came to£8,179.02!

We have been busy with so many catscoming in; the last two females needed

spaying, our vet bills go up and up. Itcosts over a hundred pounds now tospay a cat.

The mole is still here destroying thelawn - every day there are new molehillsand I have tried every single suggestionpeople have advised. The humane trapsdo not work either - he just fills them upwith earth. All the rabbits and guinea-pigs have gone to new homes. I adviseall the owners to clean them out everysingle day, keep hutches in the shadeand put their animals out in runs on thelawn with plenty of water and boardsover the top for shade. Hutches are likehot ovens in this hot weather. Thetelephone goes crazy every weekendwith people wanting to know if we areopening on a Sunday again. But, untilwe feel it is safe, we will not be openingagain on a Sunday for some time.

A.D. 1262, Alchorne Manor,Rotherfield, Sussex. Peter deAlchehorne and his son John arerelaxing in front of the fire after a harddays ploughing.

“You did well today lad. You keptthose oxen straight and out of theMabbs Ghyll and we ploughed a goodacre.”

“What is an acre Dad,”

“Well an acre is an acre same as italways has been. What a team of oxencan plough in a day. That is a longfurrow (furlong) 200 yards long. What ateam of oxen can plough without gettingtoo tired. The other way is a cant(narrow strip) 20 yards wide. That isfour times your ox goad which

sometimes called a rod or pole or perch.Good old Saxon measurements thathave served us well for hundreds ofyears.

Now our Norman Lords have said thatwe have got it wrong. They say that ourfoot is one tenth smaller than theirs andthat we have to add one foot for everyten of ours to bring things into line. Are you listening son? You look sleepy. This is where it gets complicated. Thatmeans that a furlong is now 220 yardsand a cant is 22 yards and your ox goadis now 16 and a half feet although, infact, it is exactly the same length asbefore. Did you get that son?”

No, he did not. He had nodded off andwas now fast asleep.

When it became apparent back inMarch, after lock-down, that theMonarch's Way Singers (Findon'scommunity choir) would no longer be ableto meet and sing together, the group'sleader, Carole Thomas, kindly invited allchoir members to share our Desert IslandDisc choices (based on the long-runningBBC Radio 4 programme) to try and keepmusic in our lives, and to cheer eachother up. Almost every morning wereceived an email from Carole sharing aYouTube link to someone's favouritesong, including a little bit of informationabout the composer, the piece, or theperformer for extra measure, plus eachperson's reason for choosing their song(or sometimes orchestral piece).

After a few weeks, Carole suggested wetell her our favourite female vocalist, thenmale, then duet, and even folk songsrelated to where we were born or hadlived. The choir now numbers aroundforty singers, and we have enjoyed sucha wonderful diverse mix of music as we

all shared our different tastes - oftenlearning about new music, includingDanish, French and Welsh, andreminiscing pop favourites from ouryouth. One of the choir members, ChessThomas, had the great idea of creating aMonarch's Way Singers Spotify Playlist toshare, and we now have access to over150 pieces of our favourite music, amounting to almost eight hours of non-stop classics! All of the choir membershave said a very big THANK YOU toCarole, and Chess, for helping us to keepin touch over the past few months, andbrightening our days with such awonderful mixture of music. If you areinterested to see what is on our playlist, and have access to Spotify, just searchfor the Monarch's Way Singers LockdownPlaylist, and enjoy hours of musicalentertainment. You will almost certainlyfind some of your own favourites onthere, too!

It’s the season of the glut and theweather this year has taken the glut toa whole new level! My broad beanswere a disaster (covered in blackfly),but everything else had been veryprolific. I am now drowning in a sea ofFrench beans and runner beans; andtomatoes; and Cavolo nero; and leeks;and soon Chinese cabbage. I’ve nevergrown Chinese cabbage before, but it’slooking good, so I’m hoping for lots ofstir fry in September and also somelovely sweetcorn. Another first for meis edamame beans. They haveproduced beans, but not in hugenumbers, so although we are enjoyingwhat we have, I’m not sure I’ll growthem again.

Although the jobs in the garden slowdown over July and August (apart fromthe relentless watering this year) thingsget very busy in the kitchen, as Idesperately try to use up what I’mpicking. I’ve made several batches ofsoup for the freezer – mainly tomato, but also runner bean. I’ve also frozenFrench beans, blueberries andtayberries; made and frozen courgettequiches; made jam and piccalilli;pickled beetroot, and now chutneyseason is upon us. One benefit of aglut is that it makes you look for newrecipes and I’ve just discovered SriLankan beetroot curry, which I thinkwill become a favourite. Our daughter

comes to visit once a week and goeshome with a “Red Cross parcel” full ofmasses of veg and the odd jar of jam.Our son has a fig tree that has lovedthis hot, dry weather and I’m nowswapping runner beans and beetrootfor figs.

Whilst the vegetable garden hasbenefited from the extraordinaryweather, the rest of the garden hassuffered. As our many water butts randry, and I don’t like to use too muchmains water, the lawn and flowershave struggled. I’ve watered whenthings looked as if they were about toexpire, but I think I need a rethink. Iprobably need to put down loads ofcompost to supplement the meagrelayer of soil in the borders and I amgoing to have to look into drought-tolerant plants. But at last we’ve had abit of rain so hopefully things will pickup.

Thankfully, in June, the blackbird withan identity crisis finally stoppedpretending to be an ambulance, sowe’ve had a bit of peace. I hadn’trealised how many people were beingdriven crazy by him – after I wroteabout him people kept stopping me onmy way through the village and talkingabout him. He’s certainly had his “15minutes of fame”.

Glut Reactionby Emma Purshouse

She’s diced and she’s cubed andshe’s fried. She’s boiled and she’s baked andshe’s triedHer damnedest to use up them all,But boxes stack up in the hall.

She’s flambéed, she’s devilled, she’sjammed,She’s curried, she’s chutneyed, she’srammedDown throats in risottos and pies. She really is up to her eyes.

She’s pickled, she’s roasted, she’sspiced,She’s distilled, she’s toasted, she’ssliced. She’s desperate and can’t abidewasteBut her family is sick of the taste.

So neighbours be warned andbeware,I’ve heard she’s decided to share!Bolt the doors, then hide behind nets. She’s coming! She’s bringingcourgettes!

Firstly, I have to announce theresignation of our long time Councillorand previous Chairman PeterGoldsworthy. Peter is stepping downafter a truly phenomenal 22 years onFindon Parish Council (FPC). Hisachievements are too many tocatalogue but personally I recallPeter's determination and skill inrefusing to allow Findon Village Storeand Post Office to disappear. Petersimply mobilised the village of Findonand frankly achieved what many of usthought impossible; to save the storeand make it such that it is owned byvillagers, an astonishing achievement.I am sure you will all join me in sayingmany thanks to Peter.

It is rewarding to see the new fencingtake place on Nepcote Green as thefine summer weather re-occurred andperhaps those storms that follow canhelp add water to the pond. Theproject to return the pond to its originalstate is underway and FPC isdelighted to receive commitment fromSouth Downs National Park Authoritythat they will assist us to that end. Inorder to manage this project we areseeking to form a Nepcote PondWorking Group. The Working Group’sremit will be to work with an FPCcouncillor to oversee all work

associated to return Nepcote Pond toits water-filled state of beauty. If youare interested, please supply yourname and contact details [email protected] orcall 01903 877225 and we will add youto the group.

The Council allotment gardensrepresent a fine picture at present. There are many new “village farmers”and the crop this year is lookingespecially bountiful - a real credit to allthere.

As you will see elsewhere in FindonNews the Village Hall Trust is lookingfor a new Chair. James Heasman isfilling that role temporarily but a newperson with relevant skills is needed. The Covid-19 problems have obviouslyimpacted the Hall severely with allgatherings prevented. However as wereturn to increasing normality it will bepivotal to the village that the Hallregains its place as a centre for thoseclubs, gatherings and events thatcharacterize Findon village life. It is agreat opportunity for someone to helpmake that happen to all our benefit.

Living in lockdown, my thoughts wentback to the days in Findon before wehad so much. Most villagers worked sixdays a week, so Sundays were special. Most families attended church orNepcote chapel; children also attendingafternoon Sunday school. In winterfamilies and friends would visit eachother for tea or a rare treat to see amagic lantern show at Nepcote chapel.Summer Sunday evenings would meanfamily walks through the lanes or on thehills around, stopping to chat withwhoever one met along the way!Watching traffic pass by on the Londonroad through the village, we had specialviewing points - North End well (nowunder the A24) and The Triangle (nowgone, but it was the point whereNepcote Lane and Cross Lane met theWorthing Road). It was our pre-television entertainment.

This being pre-bin collection days,Findon had its village tip on the bank ofSoldiers Field at the bottom corner ofNepcote Green. Years later treasure

hunters dug for treasure and I am surenone was found. Our tip was namedThe Dally Hole by villagers. Anyunwanted items would be offered tofamily or friends before going to TheDally Hole. My mother accepted a tablefrom a friend who lived at Ivy Cottage atNorth End. As it was on castors, transport to Old Cottage was noproblem. With three family membersand a friend half sitting on each corner,we propelled the table scooter-fashiondown the A24. I may add there wasmuch less traffic on the A24 at that time.On reaching our front door, it was foundthat the legs were too long to getthrough the door. Mum, never daunted, got a saw to shorten the legs. Life wasshort for the table in our living room, asit almost filled the room. So the table’slife ended keeping us warm as logs forthe fire.

I now return to 2020 and the unknownliving time ahead, after one of manytrips down my memory lane.

Missing from 23 The Oval, Shorthaired ginger cat (Reggie) last seenFriday 14th August 11pm. Not likehim not to come home. Please couldyou check your sheds garages andunder bushes in the garden as I thinkhe may be hurt. If found, please callKelly on 07445283000. Thank you.
