It is so wonderful to welcomeworshippers back into our churches forServices, although we are still restrictedin where we sit and are unable to includecongregational singing. I selected severalCD tracks for the first mid morningService at Findon Church, which werevery well received, and Pauline Priorplayed the organ at Clapham and thekeyboard at Patching (while awaiting thereturn of the final part of the Organ there,so it can once again be used) Thank youPauline! Numbers at 8am Communionwere higher than usual on the first weekback, but otherwise we’ve had lesspeople attending, which is to be expecteduntil a vaccine is available. Colin and Icontinue to offer a recorded act ofworship online on a Sunday, and we’veadded a midweek morning prayer to thewebsite and Facebook page on aWednesday. Our Sunday Evening Zoomoffering continues to be well supported,so this too will continue for the timebeing. This would seem a good time to reviewwhat we offer in the way of worship as achurch here in Findon, Clapham andPatching, perhaps changing some things,or adding others. If you have any ideasor comments, please send them in to theParish Office (either on an email or popthem through the letterbox) and when thePCC is able to meet again, we will have adiscussion about where we go from hereon. Thank you!We will be having a ‘Songs of Praise’Service at Findon Church on Sunday 4thAugust at 10am. Several people in thevillage have chosen a favourite hymnand will talk briefly about their choice, then we have some of our young people

singing and/or playing instruments.Everyone is very welcome to join us (at asafe distance of course!) although unlessthings change, there will still be nocongregational singing I’m afraid, but it isalways interesting to hear what particularhymns mean to other people.Speaking of music, we should havehosted another Bernardi Strings Concertlast month, but as this wasn’t possible,we were fortunate to host a recordingsession in Findon Church on July 14th,which was included in an online concertas part of the 20th Anniversarycelebration of the Shipley Arts Festival. This included the first performance of anew piece called Shipley Idyll, the middlemovement of a violin concerto composedby Paul Lewis to celebrate AndrewBernardi’s Stradivarius violin. A smallaudience enjoyed this piece, along withsome Elgar and some Mendelssohnoutside in the Churchyard after therecording was completed, the first liveperformance since lockdown, a trulymagical experience. It was the first timethe 9 string musicians had been able toplay together since the beginning of thisyear, so very special for them too. Allbeing well, we will host another concertin the church, supported by Caroline atFindon Place, in 2021, and I look forwardto welcoming many of you to that –something to look forward to. There isnothing like live music and the acousticsin the church are wonderful!Every blessing, Helena

Helena and Colin have recorded anon-line service each Sunday.

At school the children were asked to write a poem aboutwhat the corona virus has meant to them. This is thepoem that Callum Hogan Age 11 wrote.

I look outside and wonderAbout the world I knowAbout all the creaturesAbout the wind and snow

About all my friends that I can no longer seeAbout all the places that I can no longer beAbout all the things I wish I could do if freeAbout other planets where I wish that I could flee

I sleep in bed and wonderAbout the things we doTo beat the world’s dilemmaTo benefit me and you

To stop how fast the coronavirus hitsTo stop my mom talking about Joe WicksTo do all the things we want to see and doTo decrease the madness of the daily news

It slimmed me down, made me tall,But it certainly didn’t make me cool.So when you wonder about the world you know,Please, oh please, let kindness show.

The winner of the July draw wasnumber 74 John Gillie. We have heard that the village hall willnot be reopening this year, we will waitfor this to be officially announced. Wewill obviously be having our (grand, ornot so very grand) draw in November,Catherine (treasurer) and myself Alan(secretary) will investigate other options. We may be able to use one of the pubs

or another suggestion has been to see ifthe garden centre restaurant wasavailable . Obviously we will need toleave any decisions a while becauseguidelines on gatherings are constantlychanging.

I was born in Rose Cottage, HorshamRoad in Findon in 1929. Rememberinglife in Findon in the 1930s was verydifferent from today. Before the A24 by-pass was built, wewere the main road from the coast toLondon. On summer Sundays, thevillage would suffer a tail back queue oftraffic up to Washington Bostal of daytrippers returning from the seaside.Looking down, from the bedroomwindows, on the open top cars as theyslowly moved up the Horsham Roadgave us hours of entertainment.Opposite Homewood Bungalows inHorsham Road was the coffee stall thatwas a refreshment stop for the lorriesthat came through the village during theweek. Also in Horsham Road was QueensCottage, the home of our District Nurseand the home of our own villagepoliceman was at 2 Rose Cottage. Onthe opposite side of the road was theBritish Legion Club hut on land whichwas part of Shorts Farm and Dairy. In the Square was Willy Walls shop. Healways had in stock what you wantedbut finding it could take some time. Wehad Blackwells the butcher and Wintonsthe grocers for at least threegenerations. The Village House wasthen a hotel and tea room and the GunInn was, as now, at the bottom ofSchool Hill with the Grey Point Hotelopposite. On the corner of Nepcote Lane andGores Hill (now Stable Lane) wasBrowns the green grocer. Moving upNepcote Lane, on the right were Harris

the bakers and the Post Office andtelephone shop and the Blacksmithworked by three generations of theGoddard family. In Cross Lane between the houses is apath to the High Street. I have heard itcalled the Twitten but I knew it as theAckers as a child, so it is still the Ackersto me today. Where Southview Road istoday was Carter’s Coalyard. The High Street was then a street ofshops. Opposite The Manor Hotel wasthe Findon New Village Hall and nextdoor were horses stables. Following onthe right were Goatcher’s Garage, thenLeaveys the grocers. On the corner ofLeaveys was a door into Joan Turks, the hairdresser. There to my childhoodhorror, I chose a shingle cut instead ofa trim, so came out with my hair cut likea boys’. I kept my hat on for weeks butnever made that mistake again. Furtheron is a house that was once two shops,Tom Flint’s shoe and repair shop andRuffs the Drapers. I remember beingbought a bargain coat which was hadbeen faded by the sun when on displayin the window. My Mum thought it abargain. Mr Mills the Tailor had thesmall shop at the end of HermitTerrace. On the corner of Church Drive is thelarge house Averys, once the home ofthe village doctor. He had his owndispensary and was known to take outthe odd painful tooth. No HealthService but a small fee to pay. Wherethere now stands a block of flats wasthe saddlery and ironmongers ownedby Clutchy Langridge. Further on was ahouse where Miss Hobday had her

haberdashery shop in the front room.Opposite is Jubilee Parade, built for theSilver Jubilee of George V. There for atime we had a second butcher, a fishmonger, Mrs Tidies Sweetshop and theQueen of Hearts Tea room. All havechanged hands many times since.Buses to Worthing were four every houruntil 10.30 in the evening. The fare was10pence return. Travel was not aproblem.

Most houses in the village were rentedor tied cottages. Most were in a poorstate of repair. Crime was unheard ofand rent and other payments would beleft on a table for callers to collect, shutting the door on the way out. Whendid things change?Gladys says writing this has been a tripdown memory lane for her and hopes itwill be of interest to our readers.

Recently my title as your Parish Priestchanged, from ‘Priest in Charge’ to‘Vicar’. When a Parish is in Vacancy(the Priest has retired or moved on) theBishop ‘suspends the presentation’ toallow a time of transition, for a period of5 years, although it can be less. Itdoesn’t seem possible but I’ve beenPriest in Charge here for 5 years (andI’ve been working here with you for over8 years now altogether) Where doestime go? – and I’ve loved every minute.Being appointed Vicar caused someconsternation among certainParishioners, since my predecessorswere titled ‘Rector’ and I live in aRectory! Several folk have since askedwhat the difference between Vicar andRector is. I had a hazy idea it wassomething to do with times gone by andperhaps where the Parish was situated, but to be certain I ‘Googled’ thequestion. Like so much in life, itessentially comes down to money!Historically, a Rector received both thegreater and lesser tithes (from the OldEnglish teoþa meaning “tenth”),whereas the Vicar took only the lessershare, the greater going to the layholder, or patron, of the parish. In

addition, historically a Priest who actson behalf of the Bishop in a Parish iscalled a Vicar, whereas a Rector is aPriest who was independent of theBishop but responsible to the Patron.Nowadays, all clergy are the Bishop’srepresentative in their Parish, steppingaside when the Bishop is able topreside at a Service.Since Clapham’s Patron was FitzroySomerset, and is now Clem Somerset, this would explain the historic title ofRector in that Parish, which wastransferred to the Parish of Claphamand Patching, then on to Findon,Clapham and Patching. Effectively, it isjust a name change now – the roleremains the same; caring for the peoplewho live in our three beautiful villagesand praying for you all, whether youcome to church or not. That is thebeauty of the Church of England Parishsystem; there is no person who is notheld in prayer, regardless of faith, race, gender or any of the other ‘labels’society attaches to people nowadays! Iam here to serve you all, and the ‘name’the church bestows on me is immaterial– I remain your Parish Priest, and countmyself blessed to be here among you!

This first Worship and Praise Serviceto be held in church after Lockdown will be very different.

Sunday 2nd Aug at Findon Church - Time 10 amWe have people from the Church family choosing and Introducing hymns.

These hymns will be played on a track as the congregation who will besocial distancing, cannot join in the singing.

We have young people taking part at the front of the church. The people who are the church will always find a way to worship.

Come and join us.

As we come to near the end of our 3rdyear trading as a village owned storewe have been pleasantly surprised thatour sales volumes remain strong inspite of people having more choicesand better experiences fromsupermarkets than earlier in the year.We like to think this is as a result ofpeople who have discovered what afabulous village asset we are and thatwe have a surprisingly diverse butaffordable number of things they wantor need. We are seeing some of ourtraditionally stocked brands return toour suppliers and expect to see a shiftduring August to restock these anddiscontinue the temporarily stockedversions we have had.We are pleased to welcome back someof our paid staff and volunteers who hadbeen previously isolating and seen someof our temporary volunteers depart. The shop continues to offer a sanitiserstation at the shop entrance, please notethat from July 24th it will become a legalrequirement for customers to wear face

coverings in the store, the staff are notrequired to wear a face covering. Nowthat some manufacturing businesses arestarting to re-open we are hopeful thelong awaited shop awning may arriveand provide shelter for goods andcustomers in sunny or rainy conditionswhile enhancing the overall look of theshop front. As we expect the shopping environmentto remain as is, with queuing at busytimes becoming the norm, we areconscious that some of our customerscould use somewhere to rest whilewaiting, or having shopped, before theyset off back home. To that end, if anyonehas any unwanted garden benches, picnic tables etc. we could have we willgratefully take one or two to placeoutside the front of the shop.

Lastly can I please remind any of ourcustomers who use newspaper vouchersto please endeavour to get them to theshop as promptly as possible, it helps usenormously to get them input onto thesystem before the vouchers are active. It

It should have been the day of ourVillage Sheep Fair. Many of us wouldbe getting up early expecting to have towork hard all day. But this year, while alie in might be appealing, I wonder if Icould interest anyone in joining me foran early morning walk, leaving Fox Leaat 0640 on 12 September? Getting upthis early is far from my idea of fun buton this occasion I am going to do it!Why? Well everyone is aware of theeconomic cost of the Covid pandemic tothe Country, but it has had adevastating effect on Charities, whichretly heavily on public events to raisefunds; never more so than now as thepandemic has resulted in a significantincrease in demand on hospices.Traditionally the biggest fund raisingevent for our local hospice, StBarnabas, has been the annual ‘Night toRemember’ midnight walk. This year itis being replaced with ‘Sunrise to

Remember: Virtual Edition’. Instead ofwalking through the night, supporterswill be setting off from their own homesat sunrise, symbolically walking fromdarkness into light on a seven-mileroute of their choice. They can eitherdo it on their own or in groups –appropriately socially distanced.St Barnabas is hoping that this year“more people will sign up to don theirSunrise to Remember t-shirts and takeon the seven-mile challenge, as thefundraising will help the hospice tocontinue offering free care to localpeople living with terminal illness”.I’m proposing to consult on a suitableroute – not more than 7 miles – leavingjust before sunrise and returning to abacon and/or egg sandwich at 10 FoxLea. The route will be submitted to theorganisers and instructions and advicegiven. The Hospice organisers state:

“Whilst walkers will be physically walking apart from other participants, we’ll be bringingeveryone together on the day, virtually, by broadcasting live on Facebook and YouTube both

before and after their walk.

“On top of this, More Radio Worthing (107.7FM) will be hosting an extra special Sunrise toRemember takeover, with interviews with walkers and the hospice care team, as well as thechance for participants to request songs and leave messages in honour of their loved ones.”

Registration is £12 per person, children under 10 go free! All under 18’s must beaccompanied by an adult.Closing date for registrations is 6 September 2020.There is no minimum sponsorship but your registration fee covers the cost of theevent only, so every additional pound you can raise goes directly to support localpeople and their families cared for by St Barnabas. More informationwww.stbh.org.uk/events/night-to-rememberIf you are interested in joining me please let me know before August 31st either byphone (873737) or email [email protected] and I will organise our groupregistration.

Coming from a farming background,Dilys and myself have always lived inthe countryside or a village. When wegot married in 1957 I was milking cowsfor a living. The house went with the joband we moved through a series of tiedcottages from East Sussex to WestSussex and on to Somerset. (Tiedcottages are a blessing and a curse atthe same time.) Our third child,Caroline, was born with DownsSyndrome and we felt Somerset was along way from our family and friends. Itook a contract to milk and manage aherd of Frisians at Tolmare Farm andwe moved to Findon in September1965. The cottage was old and dampso, in 1967, we bought a new builthouse in Southview Road and called it‘Quantock’ after our time in the WestCountry.

I continued to work at Tolmare until1975 when ill health forced me to seekan easier job and I worked for SEEB for17 years. This enabled us enjoy ourhobby of keeping and showing dogs. Iretired in 1994. Then in 2001 we movedto the other side of the village, to BeechRoad. This bungalow had a good sizedgarden and we joined the GardensAssociation and we now showed flowersat their shows as well. Now the dogs are all gone and I haveused the time to write a book. One of the first live music concerts tookplace in Findon on Tuesday 14th Julyas part of the 20th Shipley Arts Festival. The concert took place outside in thegrounds of Findon’s St John the BaptistChurch with the orchestra of stringmusicians performing beneath thecopper beech tree to a small sociallydistanced audience and was hosted bythe Reverend Helena Buque. Theoccasion was special as it marked areturn to live music in Sussex andmusic by Sussex composers includingthe premiere of the first movement ofShipley Idyll by the composer PaulLewis and Opus 20 works bycomposers Elgar and Mendelssohn. This movement called “Shipley Idyll”was written about the Stradivarius violinplayed by Andrew Bernardi that wasmade in 1696 and with some cleverwriting including music themesreflecting musical intervals depicting theyear 1-6-9-6. The piece was perfect fora summer’s evening with nature andbirdsong in abundance in the village ofFindon. As one of the concert goers said, “Wereally enjoyed the concert on Tuesdayevening, there was something magicalabout it and we are so pleased we werepart of it.”Andrew Bernardi and his musicianswere all delighted to be performingtogether after many weeks of no livemusic taking place for orchestras andAndrew believes strongly in theprovision of live music to communitiesbeing a vital part of the rebuilding oflives and communication after lockdownmeasures ease.

The 20th Shipley Arts Festival has beendelivering the festival online throughZoom concerts since April which hasbeen possible with the continuedsupport from the Friends and Sponsors.

We were asked to take an unwantedcat, the owners moved and left himbehind last July. Since then he hasbeen creeping through cat flaps andstealing any cat food he could andwould spray on peoples doors on theway out. The fed up neighbours decidedto catch him and were so grateful whenwe said we would take him. Two ofthem sent us a donation. We had himneutered, flea'd and wormed, treatmentfor a bad injury and ear mites and hisnails cut. What a lovely friendly boy. Then before we could teach him a newname, (we called him Bob), a newVolunteer failed to put the bolt on thepen and let him out, and he was off.Luckily we had a lovely photo of him, sowe put posters up around the villageand a couple of the volunteers walkedthe streets putting hundreds of flyersthrough letterboxes. Since then both mytelephones have not stopped ringing, hehas been seen every day. I jump in mycar and when I get there he has gone.Everyone seems to know him now, he isfamous, he arrives at The Oval everynight but it is impossible to catch him.One neighbour puts food down and istrying to befriend him. She caught himonce but he escaped so now he trustsno one.Good news about our little horse Elvis,he is now having laser/acupunctureevery day at The Equine Hospital, hehas been there eight weeks now afteran accident. He needed keyhole surgeryfor a plate and two screws to be put inhis shoulder, but he pulled the stitchesout and developed a very bad infection. When he has the laser treatment theVets wear dark glasses, they also putdark glasses on Elvis! They told metoday with this treatment there is now an

improvement and think at last is now onthe mend. Our Donkey Jasper hasbeen missing him, so we have all theVolunteers constantly brushing him , heis possibly the shiniest Donkey in thecountry. We still have too many fish in our pond,(if anyone wants any goldfish let usknow). We have discovered it isimpossible to catch the fish during theday, we have to shine a torch on thepond at night to succeed. Our lawn is covered in new molehillsevery day, so as advised I have beenputting a spoonful of horse garlicpowder, and a spoonful of coffee andraw onion rings down the holes. All themoles do is throw the onions out again, Itried the humane mole traps (they arejust black tubes with a disk each end)you put them under the tunnels, whenthey go in they can't get out again !(They say ! ) Do they work? No theydon't ! Solar posts buzz and vibratewhen we stick them down the newmolehills every day, but the molesdon't care.Photos of ‘Bob’ the lost cat and Elvix thelittle horse are included on page 27Paws Animal Sanctuary Findon15 The OvalFindon VillageWest SussexBN14 0TN01903 872 734 / 0790 447 6819We never use an ansaphone so keeptrying someone is always around. We moved to Findon about twenty threeyears ago, and since then have seenmany changes to our village shop andpost office.Three years ago the shop came up forsale, due to the previous owners leavingvery suddenly, and there was muchconcern that we would lose the shopand post office, both of which areessential to the village, particularly theelderly. However, the villagers clubbed togetherand managed to purchase it, much toeveryone’s relief.Angus has worked tirelessly, oftengetting up at the unsociable hours to getto the Cash and Carry, to provide us

with essentials, like toilet rolls and flourthat were in very short supply at times. When you pop into the shop, you arealways met with a smile and a cheerfulgreeting. I would like to say “Thankyou” to Angus and his team who havekept us fed and watered through thesevery difficult months.Various safety measures have been putin place to keep us all safe, but I wonderif new residents to the village fullyappreciate this.I would also like to thank our littlebutchers who have also kept ussupplied with lovely meat and fruit andveg.

FPC is very pleased to have co-opted anew councillor, Chris Gilbert, at the endof June 2020. I am sure that hisintroduction to parish council activitiesduring the current COVID 19 situationwill be a different experience to that ofeven five months ago. Welcome, Chris !

There have been a number of fencebreakages around Nepcote Green andindeed some of the fencing has beensubsequently stolen. FPC has carriedout repairs to those that were damagedand will soon be putting in placereplacement of many of the fences. Thevandalism and stealing of fence materialhas been reported to Sussex police anda crime number recorded. The crime refnumber is 47200112724. Please if yousee any such further activity report it toSussex police on 101. Nepcote Green isthere for all of our enjoyment.

Many of you will have noticed therepainting and repair of The WattleHouse on Nepcote Green. It is a featureof the Green and many thanks are dueto all who help keep it safe and scenic.

It is a pleasure to see the face-masksproduced by Findon WI continue toserve the village and I was delighted tohear that this service continues togenerate donations to St Barnabas. It isa great example of the communityhelping each other.

In a similar manner FPC has sought toassist the extension of Findon VillageHall, looking to draft a Public WorksLoan Application to put to villagers fortheir support. Success in such anapplication allows councils to obtain aloan repayable through the ParishCouncil precept from residents overa number of years. In order to createsuch an application clear documentationdetailing specifications, work completedand monies spent to that end arerequired, and at present, architects engaged by FPC have beenunable to answer these questions.

FPC will continue to seek thisinformation and endeavour to completea draft application, although in thedifferent times we are currently living in,additional government funding may belimited.

FPC is continuing to hold its full Counciland Planning Committee meetingsremotely using the Teams platform.Members of the public are welcome todial in to the meetings and details of thetelephone number and meeting ID arepublished at the end of each meetingAgenda.
