Well, here we are at the start of anotherAdvent, although the media have beenbombarding us with ’,,, weeks to go!’messages for what feels like months!I’ve been counting down the days andweeks too, as our daughter and familyare flying in from Australia in mid-December. It will be wonderful to havethe grandchildren staying for a month!

Advent is an important time in theChristian calendar, as it gives us time tothink and take stock of where we are, inour busy lives. How much time do weallow for our faith to grow? Do we maketime for prayer and reading, or is therealways ‘something more important’ todo? Our God. fortunately, is patient; hewill wait, and carry on waiting, until suchtime as each of us is ready to seek himout.

You should all have received a cardfrom the Parish, if you live in one of theVillages, with details of what ishappening in our 3 villages over theChristmas period. If you haven’t, thereare some at the back of each church. Ihope to see all of you over theChristmas Tree Festival weekend –7-8 December – don’t forget to vote foryour favourite tree. Thanks to all whohave been working so hard for thisFestival, especially Tessa and Lindy fororganising the event and drafting inwilling volunteers! Thanks also to theFriends of Findon Church for organisingthe refreshments for the event. We also

look forward to seeing many of you atone or more of our Carol events. Thereare donkeys coming to join ourprocession and singing in all 3 villagesagain this year. Thanks to the Wyattfamily, we are holding a festive eveningat Cissbury Barns on 23rd Decemberstarting the singing around 5.30pm, withrefreshments available. Then there arethe usual Seasonal Services in ourchurches too.

Our Diocese has a new Vision for thenext 5 years, called the 4 ‘mores’; asChristians we are invited to becomemore open in our faith, more convertedto Jesus Christ, more generous andmore engaged. This vision will extendwhat has been achieved over the last 5years as we’ve learnt more about‘knowing, loving and following’ Jesus.Watch this space to find out more(!) andhow you can get involved!

Next time I write, we will be in a newyear, 2019 seems to have flown by! Aswe go into 2020, my prayer for us all isthat we will have perfect (20/20!) visionfor the year ahead, with ideas and plansthat we can all contribute to together, toensure the wonderful community spiritthat is in our Parish, our 3 villages, continues to grow and flourish.

I wish you all a peaceful and joyfulChristmas Season, and every blessingfor 2020,

Helena

About three weeks ago, whilst walking thedogs in the rain, the wonderful Gay Hibbssuggested we hold an event for Children inNeed. She tentatively suggested afternoontea, where tables and vintage china couldbe begged or borrowed to give the event aclassy look, and before I knew it I wasagreeing it would be a great idea! Yes,count me in. In Gay’s inimitable style, andhoping to raise £500, posters wereprinted, tickets deposited at Peckhams, and plans were made to transform herhome into a Claridges look alike, Pop uptea room.In true Findon style, willing handsproduced some of the finest fayreimaginable in the very best of tea rooms, served on exquisite bone china, withantique cake forks with crystal jars ofJudy’s homemade jam, scones and clottedcream. Gill Gostick made her bestbrownies and Sue Bell her magnificentmeringues. Gay Holmes made delicioussmoked salmon sandwiches, and JudyStutchbury arranged a collection offabulous goodies for a hamper raffle. Sothe Hibbs household was transformed intoa bakery, as Gay began to cook. Oh andso did I...On the day it was deemed necessary tomaintain stocks of Gay’s beautiful cakes bydispatching Maisy Darling to a carer, andneedless to say Reggie was locked out ofthe kitchen. Messrs Hibbs, Holmes andHollyhomes dressed in their finest blackties and maintained the front of housereception as well as back of housewashing up room! The ticket price was£10 and for this a selection of savouries, beautiful cakes, scones with clotted cream, and pots of tea were available inabundance. So much so that cakes weresold at the end of the afternoon, makingextra funds, as people bought a plateful ofcakes for the weekend. Nearly £200 wascollected on raffle tickets, and a further £50

on glasses of Prosecco. But it didn’t endthere.Due to thegenerosityof thoseinvolved inthe day, quite a fewcakesremained.Thejourneyhad onlyjust begun.Later thatevening, cakes were sold at the FindonVillage film night, with a tasty morselavailable following the wonderful burgers –with cake proceeds offered up to theVillage Hall. Those cakes that were leftover were frozen so they could later beused in Lambs Tails. Moving along intoSunday morning, there were still somecakes available, and these were purchasedafter the Sunday service. And with twowhole trays of freezable cakes, placed onice, the rest will be available at theChristmas Tree festival in a couple ofweeks time!!Personally, Ican never looka cake in theface again – Iam all cakedout!!Gratefulthanks toeveryone whocame along to23 ConventGardens onFriday 15th and helped to make this such asplendid success. Especially to thewonderful Gay, without whom, none of thiscould have happened. Finally, £1020 was raised and forwarded toChildren in Need.Thank you, Ann Hollyhomes

The party is over, the food and drink consumed. The Mummers have performed. StGeorge has killed the Turkish Knight and the Spanish Doctor has brought him backto life. Now it's time to get the children home to bed. Ann Moon goes into the kitchen tolight her lantern. (Ann is a 39 year old widow with four children from Treblers, thefarm next door.) The host, Elizabeth Allcorn, says that her son Fred will see Annhome. (Fred is a 33 year old bachelor only interested in the farm and his prizeSussex cattle.) He has no choice but to agree.'Just let me get my boots on and light my lantern'.They go out the back door and pass the cattle sheds. Several pairs of yellow eyesare picked out by the lights. The youngest child, Lizz speaks up.'Mr Allcorn is it true that the oxen pray to baby Jesus at midnight on Christmaseve?''Well I'm usually in bed by then unless I go to midnight mass'. He thought quickly.'One thing I do know is that they are always practising.'He kicked the wooden food trough with hisboot and called out to the bullocks. One byone the dark red Sussex cattle rose to theirfeet. (Horses get up with their front legsstraight, but cows get up on their elbows first. In this position they look as if they arepraying.)'Oh look at that', cried out the younger girls.'But that is what they always ..' said their elderbrother. Ann put a hand on his arm andstopped him.'Yes, they are always practising' she said. 'Here George take my lantern for thegirls, I can see by Mr Allcorn's'. Then she stumbled and clutched at Fred's sleeve.Only she knew whether it was by accident or design.'Here, you had better take my arm.' said Fred. Which is what she wanted anyway. On the way they talked about stock and crops and all things farming. Which wasunusual for Fred as he was shy with women. When they reached Treblers, Fred was wondering how to say goodbye. Annsolved this by leaning forward and giving him a peck on the cheek. 'Thanks for alovely evening'. Then she was gone. Fred's heart was beating a lot faster. Howcould a little kiss do that? Something had happened, but he could not figure outwhat. Anyway, he had agreed to look at her barley in the new year.Ann married Fred 1st September 1852 and a little Fred, my great grandfather, arrived in January 1853. They should have known better at their age, surely.(Frederick) Norman Allcorn

Our two ancient bells complete withsmart new headstocks were returned tothe church from the bellhangers onMonday November 18th. The event hadbeen eagerly awaited by our bellringerswho are looking forward to ringing thebells, especially the newly restored pair,at Findon once more.Once again we are indebted to RichardKennard of Puckamuck for the loan ofhis tractor and driver. It turned out to bemuch easier to transport the the bellsfrom the lorry to the lychgate than theother way round. The next task was to get the bells up thechurch path which according to manyparishioners gets steeper each week.Luckily our four volunteer bellringersfrom Angmering were standing by toassist although they were somewhatdisappointed when they realised that no

mechanisationwas involvedonly man power. It was a surprisetherefore to seehow quickly theygot the job done.Several villagerstook advantageof the opportunityto view the bellswhile they were

still on the ground. The final challenge was to raise thebells back up into their places in thetower. Firstly the wheels which had alsobeen refurbished were hoisted up intothe tower, the clappers followed andfinally it was the turn of the bells. A vastlength of chain was lowered into theringing chamber, the first bell wasattached and slowly the bell waswinched up inch by inch. Once the bell

was in position in the tower the secondbell made its ascent. Richard Bell wason hand once again to record theoccasion. We areverygrateful toour fourbellringingvolunteerswho workedwith goodhumour invery coldconditions, only appearing infrequently for a hotdrink to thaw themselves out.Our thanks also go to those who havehelped with the cost of the work, TheFriends of the Church who havedonated £5000, the bellringers whoraised over £3,000 and four charitieswho have awarded us grants, ChurchCare, The Sharpe Collection Trust,Sussex Churches Bell Restoration Fundand The Central Council of Church BellRingers. It has been a long process starting in2017 and so we are all delighted tohave our wonderful ancient bells backhome.Tessa McCormick

At the end of 2019, and looking back over the year, ournumbers have remained fairly stable with about twentyplus children (mainly aged between 5-11 years), plus theadults who have accompanied them, attending eachsession. We have covered many stories from the bibleand made craft items related to those stories. When thechildren arrive after school they have a welcome biscuit and a drink and then theyget stuck into the activities which usually includes a food related task, which theycan eat later, and working with materials as diverse as clay, beads, card, papiermâché, stones, yarns, fabrics, etc. They are always keen and hardworking.Following the craft session we have a short service of story, song and prayer. We find the children very well informed and eager to participate. The afternoonends with a shared meal and we are very grateful to our cooks for the fabulousfood they have provided every month. In addition it has become the tradition tohave a mini Messy Church on Good Friday, with hot cross buns, before we carrythe cross along the High Street to Pond Green for a short service.

There will be no Messy Church in January but we're back on 4th February, asusual on the first Tuesday of the month. All children accompanied by an adult arevery welcome.

January 2019. Chairman Angus Wattsresigned. He reported that the building fundwas exhausted, and work had ceased.New Chairman- Judith Davies was voted in asnew Chairman by the Committee. As no paperwork was handed over byprevious Chair, I felt it necessary tounderstand the situation fully. I obtained:-*Breakdown of Building costs.* Copies of original supplier invoices obtained*Meeting with Builders and Suppliers*Survey of the existing building and extension, including existing hall floor.

Plan of ActionAs finances were low, it was vital that theexisting hall must be brought up to anacceptable standard, so we could continue tolet the Hall to regular organisations, andoccasional hires. As the existing Hall floor was found to besound, and did not require a completereplacement. Three quotes were obtained, toextend the existing maple flooring. To financethis we accepted loans from local residents. This work was complete in March, and a fullclean up, made the Hall attractive toperspective hirers once more.Outside the building site was fenced off, thedamaged lawn levelled and seeded byvolunteers. Planters were donated, and flowerbeds planted.

FinanceWith the erratic closures the Hall sufferedduring the latter half of 2018, revenuesuffered.A budget review took place, which resulted ina price increase implemented on 1st July 2019.A meeting with the Events Team to increasefund raising took place.September 2019 – Revised terms withcleanings, resulting in a 50% decrease inchargesRevised Terms & Conditions of Hire -

New ExtensionWorking with Findon Parish Council, we havean application with ACRES to raise the fundsto complete this project.

The extension is approximately 85% completeQuotations to complete the work have beenobtained, and agreed with the Parish Council.A grant from AIRS will pay for 50% of the costof fitting the new kitchen and flooring when thetime comes.Grant applications to several organisations areongoingThe exterior paving will be financed by sellingmemorial paving slabs, which will pay for boththe slabs and fitting costs.Fund Raising has increased with the followingevents planned:6 Film NightsDog ShowOktoberfest1950’2 Christmas in FindonLamb 2 LoomThemed Quiz NightCombined fundraiser with the Church - “Findon’s Got Talent”Our Events Team have gained a great deal ofexperience over the last few years, and wenow have a very professional approach to ourevents, resulting in raised profits at our events.

ConclusionsThe Village Hall is once again fullyoperational. We continue to work with the Parish Counciland other organisations to raise the funds tocomplete the building projectOn completion of the extension, we intendconducting a full marketing campaign to attractprospective hires.Opening the new facility will increaseoverheads by an estimated 25%; howeverincrease in revenue is estimated at 50% ofexisting income.

Last month we had a problem with amole. He burrowed under our lawns, under paving stones and ended upfurther down into the horses' paddock. But the mole has not caused us anymore problems since we put solarvibrating posts down the holes. We think he has gone. We now needour paving stones all re-laid as they areall loose and wobble up and down whenyou walk on them. A builder is coming into make them safe again. Do moleshibernate I wonder? Will he be back?Thank you for your suggestions how tomake Moles go away such as mothballsetc...Thank goodness November is over. Thefireworks went on night after nightupsetting our poor animals. Although weonly had two hedgehogs brought in thisyear. Hopefully next year people will beable to buy the silent fireworks they nowbuy in other countries. We had so manyreports from neighbours and localpeople in the village of the misery thefireworks caused dogs and cats eachnight.

With all the rain we have had so muchmud we went to the FindonGarden Centre and bought giant bagsof woodchips and spread it over themud. It has solved the problem for now.The hens hate the rain, so we had theruns covered so they can stay dry forthe winter. We have had so many guinea-pigsarriving and we are kept so busycleaning them out and feeding themevery day.We also have a lot of elderly catsneeding homes, as usual. from Stacey.Paws Animal Sanctuary Findon15 The Oval, Findon VillageWest Sussex. As you can imagine this time of year is avery exciting time in the Preschool whatwith Halloween, Fireworks and now movingon to Christmas it is all go go go!!Over the Halloween period the children’scuriosity was sparked when we put anarray of different types of pumpkins, squashes and Gourds around thePreschool. The children were looking atthem through magnifying glasses anddrawing and decorating on them. Theyfound out about how they grow by lookingat information books. It also inspired themto use their creative skills to paint somelovely pumpkin interpretations using avariety of media and materials. We readthe enormous turnip which the childrenloved acting out and used differentmathematical language for sizing such asheavy, light, enormous etc. When one ofthe Pumpkins fell on the floor and burstopen the children were very intrigued tosee what was inside so we cut them allopen for them to explore the differenttextures and scents. This helped expandtheir descriptive language as they usedwords such as slimy, gooey, seeds, fleshetc. They used their fine motor skills to digout the seeds and flesh with spoons.Around fireworks the children were veryanimated about what they had seen andthey used their critical thinking skills torecreate a bonfire with our loose parts egplanks of wood, crates branches etc. Someof the children found sticks and things toput on the end and pretended to toastmarshmallows around it. We talked aboutsafety and how to be careful around fires. Some of the children used their largephysical skills to act out the differentfirework actions and noises eg crouching

down and jumping up and twirling aroundas they made loud bang sounds, whiz andwheee noises. Now we are busy practising our Christmassongs for our Nativity Play, we have someold favourites such as “Away in a Manger”and “Santa got stuck up the chimney” butalso enjoy learning new ones too. ThePreschool as always will be taking part inthe Christmas Tree Festival at the churchon 7th & 8th Dec. This year we have askedthe children and their families to make theirown decoration at home for it. We haveseen some lovely creations going on sofar! Please do come along to have a lookand support, last time we came a close2nd!!We will end the year on Thursday 19th withour very festive Christmas party day. Thisis a fabulous day for the children. The Findon Village Hall Trust hasoutstanding building work to completetheir full update to the Village Hall, inparticular to finish the smaller meetingroom extension.

Findon Parish Council ( FPC) is workingclosely with the Trust to gain a PublicWorks Loan from central government. These funds would allow that work to becompleted, creating an excellent and fitfor purpose Village Hall for Findon.

In addition FPC has been very active onthe planning front, reviewing bothindividual applications and thosecontinuing discussions around thebroader elements of village planning.Acting in its role as a statutoryconsultee, the FPC submits it’s opinionto the South Downs National ParkAuthority (SDNPA ), the PlanningAuthority for all applications in thevillage. Should you have an interest inany application we would urge you tomake your opinion known at the FPCPlanning Meetings (details can be foundon the FPC websitehttps://findonparishcouncil.gov.uk/ )and also submit your comments on theSDNPA Public Access portal(https://planningpublicaccess.southdow

ns.gov.uk/online-applications/)

Continuing on with SDNPA, we aredelighted to say that following anapplication from FPC for improvementsto the Homewood play area, we havejust been awarded an allocation offunding of £31.5k, available for threeyears, as part of the 2018/19Community Infrastructure Levy receipt. The Homewood play area is included inthe FPC 3 year Strategic Plan, whichwill be available for your review andcomment as part of a public consultationin the New Year.

FPC is in the process of considering it’sprecept/budget for the 2020/21 financialyear. This details those monies requiredfrom Arun District Council/centralgovernment to fund thoseworks/upkeep/projects required for thevillage and as such represent part of thecouncil tax levy for residents.

Finally we expect to have the additionaldefibrillator and external cabinet in placefor the New Year, which will provide avaluable resource on Nepcote Green.

Happy Xmas and New Year fromFindon Parish Council.

Another successful evening of Fund-Raising our Annual 'Fish & Chip & QuizEvening' at the Village House.A total of £437.58 was achieved after expenses. (Meal cost & Quiz prizes).Hearty thanks to Charlotte for selling all the tickets, Maggie for her superb cake, and Richie & Sue for looking after the Table Planning and the Raffle, and of courseto Paul and Oliver for providing the Fish & Chips.Admittedly, only a drop in the ocean of running cost of St. Barnabas Hospice (Over£7,000,000 per annum) but nevertheless a very worthwhile and entertaining event.Next up - Mince Pie and Coffee Morning on Saturday 23rd November. Please note, we would be very grateful for items for selling on the gift table! Andfor raffle prizes too!

Thank you to everyone who supported usand well done 'Findon Friends of St Barnabas.'

Looking for new volunteersDear villagers of Findon,As we approach the end of the year, it isa time of reflection and also to reviewour activities and fund raising efforts.Last year the friends were absolutelydelighted to help the Church with adonation of £10,000 which was used aspart of the cost of the Stained glasswindow restoration in the Vestry. TheTrustees would like to record theirthanks and appreciation to you for yoursupport as members and also for yourgenerosity in helping with our fundraising ideas. The sterling work and help by theTrustees have contributed and enabledthe Friends to have another verysuccessful year and once again adonation of £5,000 will be made as partof the project to re-furbish the ChurchBells. Thanks and appreciation to our currenttrustees, but we are aware that ourconstitution states that the Executive

Committee shallconsist of theHonorary Officers, not less than 3 ormore than 8 electedmembers, plus the 2church wardens.Currently we, just, meet the constitution requirement, butdefinitely feel that 1 or maybe 2 morewould be very helpful and in the event ofany current members leaving, the needfor replacements would be essential. It would also be so helpful and good toget some new committee members withdifferent and stimulating ideas. If youwould like to join us and have anenthusiastic outlook and novel ideas, please contact our secretary,Mr. Ian Watts :-E Mail [email protected] orTel 07710 158047.With thanks and best wishes,Gerald Hibbs (Chairman of the Friends)Tel 01903 872563
