Upcoming Schedule: Physical Education Newsletter Jump Rope for Heart: FEBRU ARY 201 8 Minne Loppet: Rope Power: At the beginning of this week, our students teamed up with the American Heart Association and Jump Rope for Heart to help teach them about: The importance of developing heart-healthy habits. That being physically active can be fun. That raising funds to support cardiovascular research and education helps save lives in our community and across the country. You may be asking yourself why is partnering with the American Heart Association so important? Heart disease is the nation’s #1 killer. Stroke is the 4 th leading cause of death. Our children our developing significant health issues that can shorten their life expectancy: o Almost a 1/3 rd of U.S. children are overweight or obese o Children who are obese are more than twice as likely to die before the age of 55. o 61% of children aren’t physically active outside of school. o By the age of 10, 20% of America’s 1 st graders will become diabetic. What are we trying to accomplish: Reduce the number of people dying from heart disease each year by raising funds to support research, building healthy environments, CPR training, and education. Last year we raised $29.500.00.00 and our goal this year is to raise $32,500.00 in one month. Educate students on the importance of keeping our hearts healthy and what that looks like (i.e. heart rate checks) as well as being a good citizen by giving back to the community. Incentives for participating: Just raising $50 saves one life! We want to save as many lives as possible. The American Heart Association gives out thank you gifts based on the amount of money a student raises. The more money we raise, the more money we will receive from US Games for new equipment for our PE program. We have incentives in PE as well: o Top fundraising grade: no fitness for a week in PE o Top fundraising class: extra PE class o Top individual fundraiser from each grade: lunch with the PE teachers o Top individual fundraiser in the school: wins the gym for them and their friends o Students who raise $200.00 or more: put into a drawing and the winner gets to pie Ms. Bruun and other school staff in the face in front of the entire school!
