St. Patrick’s of Tekamah:

“Rising very early before dawn, he left and went off to a deserted place,

where he prayed…He told them, ‘Let us go on the nearby villages that

I may preach there also. For this purpose I have come.’ ”

- MARK 1:35, 38- In today’s Gospel reading we see a perfect example of stewardship. Jesus gives His time to do all that God wishes – healing the sick and preaching. But before He begins, Jesus makes time to be alone with God in prayer. It is through prayer, spending time with God, that we find the strength to do what he wishes us to do. Be sure to find time every day to be with God. Children’s good deed: “I helped a friend at school; I practiced mu Spelling words; I was good at school.”

May the angel of peace watch over us. May God the Father, who made us, bless us. May God the

Praise the Lord who heals the brokenhearted.

(Psalm 147)

From Fr. Kevin…

On this fifth Sunday of ordinary time we

witness a contrast in the attitudes of Job

and Jesus found in our first reading and in

our gospel respectively. Because of his

current afflictions Job is losing heart,

losing hope and a sense of meaning and

purpose in life: “My days…come to an end

without hope…I shall not see happiness

again.” On the other hand Jesus lives with

a sense of purpose, determination and

resolution: “For this purpose have I

come.” Jesus lives a purpose-driven life

with energy and focus. He strives to fulfill

the will of the Father at all times. In our

second reading from 1 Corinthians 9 we

hear St. Paul speak with this same sense of

conviction: “I have made myself a slave to

all so as to win over as many as

possible…All this I do for the sake of the

gospel.” As Catholics we are called to live

Spirit-filled lives, sharing in the passion

and purpose of Jesus in the world. Come

Holy Spirit. Fall afresh upon us! Peace, Fr. Kevin

Thank you for your very generous contributions!

Synagogue The synagogue was not, like the Temple in Jerusalem,

a place where God dwelt and where Jews worshipped

and offered sacrifices. It was primarily a meeting place

for community prayer and for the study and

discussion of the Scriptures. Hence, it was not

organized and run by priests but by lay people, in

particular the elders of the community. Synagogues

became even more important after the Jerusalem

Temple was destroyed in 70 AD by the Romans and

sacrifices ceased to be offered. Synagogues also

helped affirm Jewish identity and community belonging

when Jews emigrated to other nations.

The Lighter Side OUR CHURCH WAS PLANNING a chili cook-off for a

charity event and my wife agreed to prepare four gallons of

her rather mild variation. The man in charge of organizing the

event asked her how she would describe her chili – three

alarm of four alarm. After hearing some of the ingredients that

went into the other chili donations, she responded, “I guess

you’d call mine false alarm.”
