PRELUDE La Nativité: III. Desseins Éternels Olivier Messiaen Eternal Purposes

OPENING ACCLAMATION

Blessed be God, Father, Son and Holy Spirit. And blessed be God’s kingdom, now and forever. Amen.

THE COLLECT OF THE DAY

The Lord be with you. And also with you. Let us pray.

Set us free, O God, from the bondage of our sins, and give us the liberty of that abundant life which you have made known to us in your Son our Savior Jesus Christ; who lives and reigns with you, in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, now and for ever. Amen.

THE FIRST READING Isaiah 40:21-31

A Reading from the Book of the Prophet Isaiah Lector: Anne Brinsmade

Have you not known? Have you not heard? Has it not been told you from the beginning? Have you not understood from the foundations of the earth?

It is he who sits above the circle of the earth, and its inhabitants are like grasshoppers; Who stretches out the heavens like a curtain, and spreads them like a tent to live in; who brings princes to naught, and makes the rulers of the earth as nothing.

Scarcely are they planted, scarcely sown, scarcely has their stem taken root in the earth, when he blows upon them, and they wither, and the tempest carries them off like stubble.

To whom then will you compare me, or who is my equal? says the Holy One.

Lift up your eyes on high and see: Who created these? He who brings out their host and numbers them, calling them all by name; because he is great in strength, mighty in power, not one is missing.

Why do you say, O Jacob, and speak, O Israel, "My way is hidden from the Lord, and my right is disregarded by my God"?

Page 4: FEBRUARY 7, 2021 THE FIFTH UNDAY AFTER THE E

Have you not known? Have you not heard?

The Lord is the everlasting God, the Creator of the ends of the earth.

He does not faint or grow weary; his understanding is unsearchable.

He gives power to the faint, and strengthens the powerless.

Even youths will faint and be weary, and the young will fall exhausted; but those who wait for the Lord shall renew their strength, they shall mount up with wings like eagles, they shall run and not be weary, they shall walk and not faint.

The Word of the Lord. Thanks be to God.

ANTHEM Sicut Cervus Giovanni Pierluigi da Palestrina Sicut cervus desiderat ad fonts aquarum: ita desiderat anima mea, ad te, Deus.

Like as the hart desireth the waterbrooks, so longeth my soul after thee, O God. (Psalm 42:1)

THE GOSPEL Mark 1:29-39

The Holy Gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ according to Mark Glory to you, Lord Christ.

After Jesus and his disciples left the synagogue, they entered the house of Simon and Andrew, with James and John. Now Simon’s mother-in-law was in bed with a fever, and they told him about her at once. He came and took her by the hand and lifted her up. Then the fever left her, and she began to serve them.

That evening, at sundown, they brought to him all who were sick or possessed with demons. And the whole city was gathered around the door. And he cured many who were sick with various diseases, and cast out many demons; and he would not permit the demons to speak, because they knew him. In the morning, while it was still very dark, he got up and went out to a deserted place, and there he prayed. And Simon and his companions hunted for him. When they found him, they said to him, “Everyone is searching for you.” He answered, “Let us go on to the neighboring towns, so that I may proclaim the message there also; for that is what I came out to do.” And he went throughout Galilee, proclaiming the message in their synagogues and casting out demons.

The Gospel of the Lord. Praise to you, Lord Christ.

SERMON The Rev. Larry Green Deacon

THE N ICENE CREED

We believe in one God, the Father, the Almighty, maker of heaven and earth, of all that is, seen and unseen. We believe in one Lord, Jesus Christ, the only Son of God, eternally begotten of the Father, God from God, Light from Light, true God from true God, begotten, not made, of one Being with the Father. Through him all things were made. For us and for our salvation, he came down from heaven: by the power of the Holy Spirit he became incarnate from the Virgin Mary, and was made man. For our sake he was crucified under Pontius Pilate; he suffered death and was buried. On the third day, he rose again in accordance with the Scriptures; he ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of the Father. He will come again in glory to judge the living and the dead, and his kingdom will have no end. We believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord, the giver of life, who proceeds from the Father and the Son. With the Father and the Son he is worshiped and glorified. He has spoken through the Prophets. We believe in one holy catholic and apostolic Church. We acknowledge one baptism for the forgiveness of sins. We look for the resurrection of the dead, and the life of the world to come. Amen.

THE PRAYERS OF THE PEOPLE Lector: Jacqueline Griesdorn

Let us pray for the Church and for the world.

Grant, Almighty God, that all who confess your Name may be united in your truth, live together in your love, and reveal your glory in the world.

Lord, in your mercy Hear our prayer.

Page 6: FEBRUARY 7, 2021 THE FIFTH UNDAY AFTER THE E

Guide the people of this land, and of all the nations, in the ways of justice and peace; that we may honor one another and serve the common good.

Lord, in your mercy Hear our prayer.

Give us all a reverence for the earth as your own creation, that we may use its resources rightly in the service of others and to your honor and glory.

Lord, in your mercy Hear our prayer.

Bless all whose lives are closely linked with ours, and grant that we may serve Christ in them, and love one another as he loves us.

Lord, in your mercy Hear our prayer.

Comfort and heal all those who suffer in body, mind, or spirit; give them courage and hope in their troubles, and bring them the joy of your salvation.

We lift up all those in our community in need of healing, wholeness, and relief from pain. We pray for Bob, Brian, Lee, Becky, John, James, The Vor Broker Family, Clayton, Annie, Barbara, Meghan, Sarah, Catherine, Sharon, Diane, Jane, Donna, Janice, Louis, Charlie, Petra, Cindy, Sharon, Carol, Jeni, John, Sergio, Jeff, Alan, Justine, Richard, Tracey, Jim, Ed, Suzanne, Nancy, Pat, Josephine, Bethany, The James Family, Ginny, Dan, Leah, Mia, JoeAnna, Marcie, Brent, The Quigg Family, The Cerda Family, Charlie and The Adams-Frank Family, Michael, Chip, all families in distress, and all our friends in the St. Chrysostom’s Kitchen program, St. Leonard’s and Grace House & Deborah’s Place, and FCHN (Feed, Care, and Help the Needy). We invite your additional prayers.

Lord, in your mercy Hear our prayer.

We commend to your mercy all who have died, that your will for them may be fulfilled; and we pray that we may share with all your saints in your eternal kingdom.

Page 7: FEBRUARY 7, 2021 THE FIFTH UNDAY AFTER THE E

We pray especially for those who have died as a result of gun violence in our city this week: Darryl Herron, 27; Martese Jackson, 19; Leroy Smythe, 25; Vilut Beny Gavrilas, 37; Floyd Johnson Jr., 34; Tyrone Carr, 30; and Unknown Male, 31. Silence is observed. Almighty and everliving God, source of all wisdom and understanding, on the occasion of our annual meeting be present with those who take counsel for the renewal and mission of your Church. Teach us in all things to seek first your honor and glory. Guide us to perceive what is right, and grant us both the courage to pursue it and the grace to accomplish it; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

THE CONFESSION OF S IN

Let us confess our sins against God and our neighbor.

Most merciful God, we confess that we have sinned against you in thought, word, and deed, by what we have done, and by what we have left undone. We have not loved you with our whole heart; we have not loved our neighbors as ourselves. We are truly sorry and we humbly repent. For the sake of your Son Jesus Christ, have mercy on us and forgive us; that we may delight in your will, and walk in your ways, to the glory of your Name. Amen.

Almighty God have mercy on you, forgive you all your sins through our Lord Jesus Christ, strengthen you in all goodness, and by the power of the Holy Spirit keep you in eternal life. Amen.

THE PEACE

The Peace of the Lord be always with you. And also with you.

As we are gathered today in this unusual way for live-streaming services, we aim to engage in all of the important parts of our weekly worship services. One of those important worship elements is receiving the offering.

Our financial gifts to support what God is doing at St. Chrysostom’s make ministry possible every day of the year. In this season of rapid change, our church is providing ministry in new ways each day by offering livestream services, carillon concerts, prayer support, parishioner outreach, children’s ministries through online connections, small gathering opportunities and staff support.

I encourage you to take a moment right now and make a gift to support ministry at St. Chrysostom’s Church. You can easily make a one-time or recurring gift by: Texting GIFTSTC to 73256 Visiting our website at: https://onrealm.org/SaintC/give/offertory

THE HOLY COMMUNION __________________________________________________________________________________________

The Lord be with you. And also with you.

Lift up your hearts. We lift them to the Lord.

Let us give thanks to the Lord our God. It is right to give God thanks and praise.

It is right, and a good and joyful thing, always and everywhere to give thanks to you, Father Almighty, Creator of heaven and earth.

Because in the mystery of the Word made flesh, you have caused a new light to shine in our hearts, to give the knowledge of your glory in the face of your son Jesus Christ our Lord.

Therefore we praise you, joining our voices with Angels and Archangels and with all the company of heaven, who for ever sing this hymn to proclaim the glory of your name:

Holy, holy, holy, Lord God of power and might, Heaven and earth are full of your glory. Hosanna in the highest. Blessed is the One who comes in the Name of the Lord. Hosanna in the highest.

Page 10: FEBRUARY 7, 2021 THE FIFTH UNDAY AFTER THE E

We give thanks to you, O God, for the goodness and love which you have made known to us in creation; in the calling of Israel to be your people; in your Word spoken through the prophets; and above all in the Word made flesh, Jesus, your Son.

For in these last days you sent him to be incarnate from the Virgin Mary, to be the Savior and Redeemer of the world. In him, you have delivered us from evil, and made us worthy to stand before you. In him, you have brought us out of error into truth, out of sin into righteousness, out of death into life.

On the night before he died for us, our Lord Jesus Christ took bread; and when he had given thanks to you, he broke it, and gave it to his disciples, and said, “Take, eat: This is my Body, which is given for you. Do this for the remembrance of me.”

After supper he took the cup of wine; and when he had given thanks, he gave it to them, and said, “Drink this, all of you: This is my Blood of the new Covenant, which is shed for you and for many for the forgiveness of sins. Whenever you drink it, do this for the remembrance of me.”

Therefore, according to his command, O Father,

We remember his death, We proclaim his resurrection, We await his coming in glory;

And we offer our sacrifice of praise and thanksgiving to you, O Lord of all; presenting to you, from your creation, this bread and this wine.

We pray you, gracious God, to send your Holy Spirit upon these gifts that they may be the Sacrament of the Body of Christ and his Blood of the new Covenant. Unite us to your Son in his sacrifice, that we may be acceptable through him, being sanctified by the Holy Spirit. In the fullness of time, put all things in subjection under your Christ, and bring us to that heavenly country where, with all your saints, we may enter the everlasting heritage of your sons and daughters; through Jesus Christ our Lord, the firstborn of all creation, the head of the Church, and the author of our salvation.

By him, and with him, and in him, in the unity of the Holy Spirit all honor and glory is yours, Almighty Father, now and for ever. AMEN.

Page 11: FEBRUARY 7, 2021 THE FIFTH UNDAY AFTER THE E

And now, as our Savior Christ has taught us, we are bold to say,

Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy Name, thy kingdom come, thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread. And forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, for ever and ever. Amen.

Alleluia. Christ our Passover is sacrificed for us; Therefore let us keep the feast. Alleluia.

The gifts of God for the people of God. Take them in remembrance that Christ died for you and feed on Him in your hearts by faith, with thanksgiving.

THE PRAYER OF SPIRITUAL COMMUNION

I believe that you, O Lord, are truly present in the holy sacrament, and since I cannot at this time receive communion, I pray you to come into my heart. I unite myself with you and embrace you with all my heart, my soul, and my mind. Let nothing separate me from you; let me serve you in this life until, by your grace, I come to your glorious kingdom and unending peace. Amen.

THE POST-COMMUNION PRAYER

Let us pray. Eternal God, heavenly Father, you have graciously accepted us as living members of your Son our Savior Jesus Christ, and you have fed us with spiritual food in the Sacrament of his Body and Blood. Send us now into the world in peace, and grant us strength and courage to love and serve you with gladness and singleness of heart; through Christ our Lord. Amen.

THE BLESSING

THE D ISMISSAL

Let us go forth in peace to love and serve the Lord. Alleluia, alleluia. Thanks be to God. Alleluia, alleluia.

Olivier Messiaen (1908-1992) was Organiste Titulaire at La Trinité, Paris and will be remembered as the most important French composer of the 20th century. Not only did he create a new compositional language for the organ, wrote phenomenal works for orchestra, piano, chamber groups, and a phenomenal opera, he also influenced many of our most prominent contemporary composers through his teaching at the Paris Conservatory. La Nativité du Seigneur, a collection of nine meditations on the birth of Christ, was one of his first important contributions to the organ repertoire. Each meditation portrays various aspects of the miraculous birth such as the Virgin and Child, the shepherds, the Wise Men, as well as theological meditations on the life of Jesus, salvation, and the continuing presence of God on earth.

Desseins Éternels (Eternal Purposes) has this text: “God, in love, has predestined us to be his adopted children, through Jesus Christ, through the glory of his grace.” It is a tender and mysterious work, featuring a lyric solo over dense chords.

Dieu parmi nous (God among us) is the final work, combining many of musical themes heard through the nine meditations: the opening theme represents God coming to earth in the form of Jesus (The Word) and heard in the pedal, the second theme is Divine Love heard on the Célestes, and the third theme is Mary’s exultant Magnificat. These themes are developed in variations and then combined in a glorious toccata.

Palestrina's (C.1525-1594) setting of Psalm 42's first verse is one of his most exquisite works. Written in syllabic style, Palestrina demonstrates how successfully he adapted his former polyphonic style to a newer, simpler style mandated by church authorities. Although this new style is much less complex than his polyphonic style it nevertheless retains the essentials: beautiful and flowing melodic lines, great attention to text and text illustration, and, above all, his own particular and gracious serenity. Palestrina, Byrd and Tallis were among the few who, when forced by ecclesiastical authority and changing tastes to drastically alter their composing style, met that challenge gracefully and gave the world some of its best choral works.

One Church, One Book: The Gospel of Mark For this year’s Lenten small groups, we are going back to the foundational stories of our faith and discipleship. We will read and discuss the gospel of Mark, guided by The 50 Day Bible Challenge: A Journey with Mark. Each day’s reading is accompanied by a very short reflection, a prayer, and suggested questions. You can order it on paperback or on Kindle. It is the shortest gospel and is believed by most scholars to be the earliest one that was written down. In a time when so many things are shifting, this feels like the right time to revisit those touchstones to help us chart our course toward stronger ties with God, our church family, and our neighbors. Please register for one of the groups below through the zoom link provided. Once you register you will receive the meeting information. If these groups do not work your schedule, email Rev Peggy ([email protected]) for a possible alternate date and time.

PARISH & COMMUNITY ENGAGMENT

ST. CHRYS ANNUAL GIVING DAY!

On January 24, 2021, St. Chrysostom’s kicked off the first annual St. Chrys. Annual Giving Day. Our community is what we each are able to contribute to it. With your generous support, our Church and Day School are able to provide the array of programming that makes our community special. Establishing an Annual Giving Day is an opportunity for us to not only give as we are able, but to think about “Why we give and how it is Strengthening Our Ties as a community”. For the Annual Giving Day, St. Chrys. is looking for new or additional annual gift commitments (pledges). The vestry has agreed to show its support for the St. Chrys Annual Giving Day by agreeing to match the additional gift commitments and gifts by up to $12,150! The match will be against all new pledger amounts (i.e., individuals or families who did not pledge in the 2019-20 stewardship campaign) or new prior pledgers who have increased their amounts from the 2019-20 stewardship campaign.

You can submit an online annual gift commitment (pledge) at: https://www.saintc.org/giving2/annualgift/ Or you can submit your gift directly to the fund at: https://onrealm.org/SaintC/give/annualgift Now, more than ever, it is important that we find ways of STRENGTHENING OUR TIES as a community! It’s through all of us that all this is possible!

Thank you for your continued support and generosity!

In the documentary, filmmaker Katrina Browne discovers that her New England ancestors were the largest slave-trading family in U.S. history. She and nine cousins retrace the Triangle Trade and gain powerful new perspectives on the black/white divide. Dain and Constance Perry, family members who appear in the film, will join us for the discussion. This Zoom event is free but space is limited; please register in advance. After registering, you will receive a confirmation email containing information about joining the meeting.

WHAT’S HAPPENING IN THE DIOCESE OF CHICAGO

THE EPISCOPAL CHURCH SUPPORTS PERMANENT PROTECTION FOR DREAMERS Presiding Bishop asks Episcopalians to contact members of Congress

The Episcopal Church has long advocated for legislation that protects Dreamers and offers a pathway to citizenship. Through the deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA), nearly 800,000 Dreamers have come forward, passed background checks, and been granted permission to live and work legally in the U.S. without fear of deportation. “At this time, the Dream Act is pending before the Congress of the United States,” said Presiding Bishop Michael B. Curry. “I’m asking you as Episcopalians, as people of good will and faith, to write and call members of Congress who represent you to support this Dream Act.” Respond to Bishop Curry’s call to action by writing Congress through the Episcopal Public Policy Network’s action alert system Link to view the Presiding Bishop’s video message: https://www.facebook.com/TheEPPN/videos/263470364976335/
