SPECIAL HORSE BREEDS

Features of horse breeds

Page 2: Features of Horse Breeds

Introduction

Horse breeds are loosely divided into three categories based on general temperament: spirited "hot bloods" with speed and endurance; "cold bloods", such as draft horses and some ponies, suitable for slow, heavy work; and "warmbloods", developed from crosses between hot bloods and cold bloods, often focusing on creating breeds for specific riding purposes, particularly in Europe. There are more than 300 breeds of horse in the world today, developed for many different uses.

The Akhal-Teke is a horse breed from Turkmenistan, where they are a national emblem.  They have a reputation for speed and endurance, intelligence, and a distinctive metallic sheen. The shiny coat of palominos and buckskins led to their nickname "Golden Horses".

These horses are adapted to severe climatic conditions and are thought to be one of the oldest existing horse breeds. There are currently about 6,600 Akhal-Tekes in the world, mostly in Turkmenistan and Russia, although they are also found throughout Europe and North America.

Curly horse

The unique gene that gives Curlies their curly hair (which is most obvious with their winter coat) can be expressed minimally (horse exhibits curly hair inside ears, at fetlocks, and a kinky mane and tail), maximally (horse exhibits curl all over body, has dreadlocked mane, and has curly eyelashes and guard hairs), and "Extreme" (very tight, extreme curls, but when they shed out for summer can shed entirely bald) or any variation in between.

Curlies are claimed to be the only hypoallergenic horse breed; most people allergic to horses can handle Curly Horses without suffering any allergic reaction. Research indicates a protein is missing from the hair of Curlies which may be what causes allergic reactions to horses in allergy suffers

Danube Delta horse refers to a population of feral horse found in and around Letea Forest, located in the Danube Delta, between the Sulina and Chilia branches of Danube. About 3600 feral horses live in the Danube Delta, 2000 in the Letea nature reserve, where on one hand, they are among the last remaining "wild" (feral) horses living on the European continent. he horses on Letea are black or bay, without white spots. They are 1.45 to 1.50 metres and are of a strong build.

The winner for the craziest ears goes to the Marwari horse. It is a rare breed from the Marwar region of India and is easily identified by the inward-curving ears. The breed has been around since early in the 12th century, and is hardly a sport horse that was mainly used as a war horse throughout its history. Today it is used mostly for farm work, riding and packing.

The Mustang

Page 14: Features of Horse Breeds

The mustang is a feral horse found in the united states of America. The mustang gets its name from the Spanish word mesteño, meaning wild or stray. Being feral, mustangs are very tough and hardy. They have good strong bones and feet, and are usually stocky and well muscled. However, because they are bred in the wild and not for any specific purpose their physical builds vary more than those of domestic horses.

As wild horses they are hard to train and are used in rodeo.
