Welcome to the May/June issue of Family Go Live, which has all you need to help you keep your family healthy, happy and entertained this summer.

For those of you who are planning to travel with your baby, but dreading other passengers’ reactions to your little one’s impressive vocal abilities, worry no more. In Bumps and Babies we talk to a childcare expert about the best ways to keep your child occupied on the move.

In Education, we take a look at the divisive issue of text speak. Whether you think it’s a great way to communicate quickly or the red mist descends whenever you see the phrases ‘lol’ or ‘gr8’, you’ll be interested to learn that some experts actually think that text speak is turning our children bilingual!

And with Father’s Day coming up, we’re also taking a look at a few Merseyside days out that dad will definitely enjoy. We also celebrate the re-opening of Central Library in Liverpool city centre.

There’s all this and much more, and as ever we’ve got our usual mix of competitions and fabulous money off vouchers. So even if money’s tight, you can still have fun with your family.

Best wishes, The Family Go Live team

While most mothers are perfectly happy to give birth in a hospital, some mothers prefer to go through labour in an environment where they feel completely secure and safe – at home.

Despite the fact that home births are available to any woman who is predicted to have an uncomplicated birth, just 2% of UK mums currently avail themselves of this option.

Despite the low take-up rate, there are several benefits to giving birth at home. There’ll be no mad dash to the labour ward as soon as your waters break, and you’ll be able to sleep in your own bed after the birth.

A home birth can even have a positive effect on the progress of labour. The hormone adrenaline can stop labour progressing as it stops the release of oxytocin - the hormone which makes the womb muscles contract. If a woman is in her home environment and relatively relaxed, she is less likely to be anxious and produce high levels of adrenalin. The benefits look pretty compelling, so what are the downsides? Alison Edwards, Senior Lecturer in Midwifery at Birmingham City University’s Faculty of Health comments: “The risks of childbirth are the same for a woman wherever she gives birth. The difference with a home birth is that the help during an emergency is further away.

“For this reason, generally it is women considered to be low risk who can opt for a home birth - these are women without any medical or obstetric complications. Having said that, the paramedics and community midwives are regularly and thoroughly trained to deal with emergencies that may arise, which are actually relatively rare.”

So what sort of practical measures do you need to take to prepare for a home birth? Most equipment will be supplied by the community midwife, but there are a few things for expectant parents to consider.

Family Go Live launches Coffee House Chat at David Lloyd, Speke

The benefits of home births

... Places limited. RSVP [email protected]

If you’d like to get out and about more and meet other parents, don’t miss our first ever Family Go Live Coffee House Chat, held in association with David Lloyd gym.

The first meeting, which is aimed at parents with children aged 0-2, will take place on Tuesday 14th May at 10.30am at the cafe at David Lloyd gym in Speke. David Lloyd will also be giving attendees a free Family Day Pass.

The informal event is a great chance to meet other mums and dads and to share tips on sleeping, weaning and helping your child develop. You’ll also get to meet the team behind Family Go Live magazine, and find out about the latest baby and toddler groups in your area.

Denise Harris, Director of Family Go Live magazine, commented: “Being a new parent is extremely rewarding but can also feel very isolating. Our new Coffee House Chat is a great chance to get out and about and meet other mums and dads who are in the same boat as you. We’re really looking forward to meeting our readers and urge any mums or dads with a young child to come along.”

For example, the mother must ensure that she has a room which has ample space and can be adequately heated, and a supply of clean towels. If pain relief stronger than gas and air is required, then the GP can be asked to prescribe Pethedine, which the woman has to collect and store well ahead of the due date. All other equipment required can be supplied by the community midwives.

If you or a family member is considering a home birth, the best source of information is your midwife.

Much as every parent adores their children, travelling with fractious offspring can make one long for

those halcyon days when long journeys were simply an opportunity

to get stuck into a good book and make copious visits to the on-

board shop.

While travelling in a car with an irritable child can be challenging enough, on a train or plane many parents find their distress multiplied by the worry that other passengers are judging them for their inability to quieten their children. Luckily, help is at hand.

We spoke to Katy Hayden, Childcare Expert and ‘super nanny’ at Tinies Childcare, about how to master the art of travelling with your child.

She said that with the limited views, restricted space and sometimes unpleasant side effects such as ear popping and nausea, travelling with young children by plane can be especially taxing for parents. The key, says Katy, is to have a plan: “Be prepared, have as many activities with you as possible. Use

exciting new activities or toys to distract them and ensure that you have plenty of snacks and drinks with you.”

What you do before your journey can also determine how calm your child will be. Toddlers have lots of energy, so Katy also recommends allowing your toddler to run around as much as they wish before the flight; chasing them around an airport may ultimately be less stressful than doing 1,000 laps of the plane’s aisle or attempting to stem their ‘irate Pavarotti’ impression when it’s at full throttle.

On solid ground, Katy recommends drawing your child’s attention to the exciting things around them and making the journey as interactive as possible: “Talk with your child about things they can see out of the window.

“If they are a toddler allow them to pay the driver, take the ticket, press the bell. All of this will make it fun and they are less likely to be fractious and grumpy.”

Katy concluded: “Travelling with young children can be fun and exciting, the key to any stress free journey is to be prepared, stay calm and enjoy it. These three factors will play a huge role in ensuring it is a stress free experience for all the family.”

“People around you may not be overjoyed if your baby or toddler starts crying or shouting but just remember that everyone was a toddler once and I’m sure that they all did exactly the same.”

Top tips for travelling with your baby...

TRAVELLING WITH TOTSThe EssentialsAs the sun starts to shine and the

winter coats go to the back of the

wondering if you have forgotten

something, packed enough, packed

too little ... have you got your

passport... However when there is

a baby or tot in tow, this experience

becomes a whole lot worse. Here are

a few essentials that will ensure your

holiday experience is a lot easier...

We talk to Alison Ogden from Water Babies about how baby swimming classes can benefit you and your baby...

What sort of programme do you run? “Teaching water confidence and safety techniques from birth, the specialist Water Babies programme is designed to make the most of babies’ natural affinity with water.

“With progressive training, babies can be taught life saving skills such as turning onto their backs or, following a sudden submersion, swimming to the nearest solid object. And it’s so important that they do. Within the last three years, ten of our children saved themselves from drowning – despite five of them being only two.”

What are the benefits of swimming with your child? “Swimming from birth is excellent for babies’ development, providing a complete physical workout which in turn aids the development of the brain.

“What’s more, regular swimming can enhance their awareness and improve eating and sleeping patterns – a definite bonus!”

Is it a good way to meet other mums? “With a clear emphasis on having fun, lessons are generally very sociable occasions. And as the weeks go by, you’ll love the thrill of seeing your children progress with the help of our professional instructors.”

Alison Ogden has been running Water Babies across Liverpool and surrounding areas since October 2005 and now teaches over 1,450 babies and toddlers across the region. For more information call Alison or her team on 01925 243643 or visit www.waterbabies.co.uk

While for many of us the phrase ‘The Duke of Edinburgh’s Award’ (DofE) may conjure up the image of cagoule-clad teenagers desperately trying to navigate their way around a wet hillside with just a compass to help, there’s much more to the DofE than meets the eye.

Certainly, the DofE has stood the test of time. It has been in place since it was founded by the Duke of Edinburgh himself in 1956, and 275,000 young people are currently working towards the award.

We find out more about the DofE, and why your children should consider doing it....

What is the DofE? The DofE enables young people to build confidence and gain new skills by taking part in a range of challenges over a fixed period of time. There are three progressive levels, leading to Bronze, Silver or Gold Awards. With assistance from adults – such as teachers or youth club leaders – young people select and set objectives in the areas of Volunteering, Physical, Skills, Expedition and Residential in the case of the Gold Award.

Who can take part in the DofE? Anyone aged 14-24 can take part in the DofE, though all programmes must be complete by the participant’s 25th birthday.

How long does it take to complete a DofE programme? Completing a DofE programme can take between six months for a Bronze Award and 18 months for a Gold.

Where can young people do it? While most young people access the DofE through their school, youth clubs, voluntary centres and even young offenders institutions also offer the DofE. You can find out more at www.DofE.org

What’s the benefit of doing the DofE? Doing the DofE can help your child to get fit, develop new skills and talents and enjoy experiences they’ll never forget. The activities undertaken can be tailored to your child’s interests, so even if they’re not an ‘outdoorsy’ type, there’s bound to be something that suits them. Crucially, the DofE is a key differentiator on CVs, showing that from an early age your child has been someone who is willing to go the extra mile.

Text speaking is turning our children

bilingual, say teachers

BIZARRE SPELLINGS INCLUDE:

While many of us may love the idea of having children so talented they’ve

mastered two languages, a recent poll of parents and teachers has shown that the

most common form of bi-lingualism is not being able to speak, say English and French, but being able to speak English

and text speak.

A poll of parents and teachers by Del Monte and Mencap found that the majority (89 per cent) believe the growing use of text speak to be the equivalent of a language barrier between them and children.

Two-thirds (68 per cent) of teachers say that essays or pieces of homework routinely contain a piece of newspeak, such as Gr8 or LOL.

Similarly 76 per cent of parents said that they regularly require their kids to clarify the contents of a text message or email. Parents report that this is the case in texts from kids as young as eight.

While some argue that the proliferation of text speak is simply evidence of the way language continues to evolve to meet the needs of its users, others claim that not stamping out the use of text speak in formal settings, such as school work and essays, will lead to children facing communications problems in adulthood.

Frans Van Melis, Vice President at Del Monte said: “The difficulty is that a lot of text speak is creeping into work that kids are doing in the classroom. Spelling has become much more fluid than it used to be which, on one level, is good but on another doesn’t help with academic attainment.”

Deborah Giannasi from Barefoot Books shares her top books for kids of all ages...

Great for toddlers...A Farmer’s Life for Me“This fun and informative book, with enhanced CD, tells the story of a busy family and their friends spending a day working and playing on the farm. From milking the cows in the morning to closing the gate at night, learn about a day in the

Spring reads life of a farming family. Your little ones will love the wonderful illustrations and the CD includes a video animation and audio singalong that will keep them active and engaged. Our singalong books are popular in nurseries and libraries as a great addition to story and rhyme time.”

For teaching life’s little lessons...The Tear Thief“Each night, in the hours between supper and bedtime, the Tear Thief carries her waterproof, silvery sack as she steals the tears of every child who cries. But what does she do with all those tears? This warm, poignant, and beautifully illustrated story offers a thought-provoking message and a starting point to share children’s emotional experiences. A great book for children and carers to read together and explore developing thoughts and feelings.”

For independent readers...The Adventures of Odysseus“Barefoot has a great range of books for independent readers, ranging from early to advanced readers. As Odysseus fights to find his way back home after the long and brutal Trojan War, he has to endure harrowing ordeals and adventures, and come to terms with devastating losses. Storytellers Hugh Lupton and Daniel Morden’s graphic retelling breathes new life into this great classic.”

Government plans to change the way maths is taught may lead to children failing to develop the education skills they need, according to a national numeracy charity.

In a letter to Secretary of State for Education Michael Gove, the charity suggests that the proposals for a more ‘rigorous’ curriculum and for children will actually hamper their progress.

It argues that introducing too much too soon will lead to children falling by the wayside and losing interest, and suggests that some teachers will resort to ‘teaching to the test.’

Chief Executive of National Numeracy, Mike Ellicock, said: “The government is missing a major opportunity here. Children will develop confidence and resilience in maths only if they are given the time, encouragement and skilled teaching they need to allow them to understand the essential concepts. Rushing on from one element to another – regardless of whether the basics are fully grasped - is a recipe for failure.”

Following nearly three years of intensive refurbishment work, Liverpool Central Library will re-open to the public on the

17th May 2013.

Central library is located in the heart of Liverpool’s cultural quarter on William Brown Street, next to the World Museum Liverpool.

Although a much-loved part of Liverpool’s heritage, the library had gradually fallen into disrepair over the decades. It was suffering from damp, crumbling masonry and a leaking roof amongst other problems.

Following a £50 million pound refurbishment, the Grade II* listed parts of the building which date back to the late 1850s, including the façade, the famous Picton Reading Room, Hornby Library and Oak Room have been restored to their former glory. The sections behind the façade which were built in the 1950s and 1970s following WWII bomb damage have also been demolished and rebuilt to make the most of the available space.

The new look library also includes a spectacular new rooftop terrace overlooking St. John’s Gardens with superb views across the city, double the number of public computers and a free Game Zone including X-boxes and a Bose sound system, perfect for getting young people interested in a trip to Central Library.

The fun for families really starts in ‘Discover’, a space which offers an attractive environment for children to discover a range of books DVDs and more. With giant bean bags, primary coloured seating and lighting that can change to suit the mood, Discover is built in a spiral design, making

it fun and safe for kids to explore! The library also has computers for children and multimedia resources such as children’s DVDs and books on CD. Come and see for yourself!

For adults, history buffs will be delighted by the library’s new archive, which is the best place to find out more about your family history, or even the background of your street or house.

This part of the library includes extensive collections of unique and rare archives from the 13th century to the present day. There are photographs, maps, newspapers, directories, and much more, recording the lives of Liverpudlians across the centuries from cradle to grave.

The library also includes a new home for the Liverpool Record Office, which houses some of the city’s most historic treasures from the last 800 years - such as the original King John 1207 charter - in a purpose-built secure, climate-controlled repository, along with improved access and facilities for users.

As well as containing myriad gems from Liverpool’s past, the library has also had a thorough updating for the 21st century, a ground floor café selling Costa coffee, study areas and full free Wi-Fi coverage around the whole building.

Various studies have shown that those who play musical instruments tend to do better in school, and many researchers now believe that learning any musical instrument actually aids the development of certain parts of the brain. Similarly, it’s likely to help your child take to heart the lesson of ‘practice makes perfect’ and show them that if you want to be really good at something, they need to put the time and the hours in.

Perhaps most importantly of all, learning a musical instrument is good fun, and will provide your child with ample opportunity to socialise with other children by taking part in orchestras and concerts, both inside and outside of school.

Learning a musical instrument doesn’t need to be expensive either, with many schools offering a free tuition to children who show a commitment to learning an instrument and some private tutors offering a discount if more than one of your children would like to learn.

Caroline Crabbe, UK General Manager at Jo Jingles, which provides musical tuition to children added: “It is now widely recognised that the earlier children are exposed to musical activities the better, and this includes learning a musical instrument.

“From the first taps of a triangle to beating a small drum, children are learning about sound and rhythm and the more interactive we make this type of learning the more benefit it is to a child. Learning a musical instrument helps to improve concentration and listening, memory skills, develops discipline, language and communication, co-ordination, general understanding of different musical cultures from around the world, mathematical ability, self-expression and creativity, a sense of achievement and it helps to stimulate happiness.”

Karen Agate, a mum from Hunts Cross tells us why she’s

helping her kids stay fit with

David Lloyd gym in Speke...

“I’ve got two little boys, aged four and six, and I send them to swimming and football lessons at David Lloyd. I’m really pleased with their progress at the classes.

“Their group swimming lessons are tailored to the stage that the child is at, so they never feel out of their depth but are guided to achieve more. You can also see how your child is progressing as they are graded by their instructors, with all certificates recognised by the Swimming Association Board. Swimming is such an important life skill to have, and I really feel that my children are getting the best swimming teaching available.

“The football classes they attend are mostly little ‘friendly’ matches, which they really enjoy, and which are great for improving their footie skills as well as being great fun.

“As well as the obvious health benefits, these classes are a great way for my kids to learn to enjoy exercise – a brilliant life skill - interact with other children outside of school and nursery, and hopefully make a few new friends along the way too.

“I’ve been especially pleased with David Lloyd as a gym. It’s very family orientated and even has a dedicated ‘Kids’ manager,

Katie. Katie and her staff do an excellent job, and always make time to interact with children and their parents, even if they are not taking a class that day.

“The gym itself caters for children very well. They teach a variety of sport and activities. They do Get Active – which is mostly playground games, and Multi Sports, which includes sports like cricket, basketball and dodgeball. For more artistic kids, there is even Create – an arts and crafts based class.

“They also have a crèche, and run holiday clubs for kids during the school holidays. Perfect for helping little ones burn off energy which mum and dad are at work! The gym can also host children’s parties. My son’s friend has his fifth party at David Lloyd and we all thoroughly enjoyed it. Unlike other gyms, you feel like David Lloyd really is targeted at all the family, rather than just grown ups.

“There’s so much on offer, and something for every child’s interests. I’ve noticed that even the most apprehensive of kids come away with a smile on their face and want to go back.”

Summer just isn’t summer without strawberries and cream, crisp tennis whites and the trials of Andy Murray, and tennis is coming a little closer to home in June with The Liverpool International Tennis Tournament – the largest tennis exhibition in Europe.

In its 12th year, the festival, which takes place at Calderstones Park from the 20th -23rd June, has featured legends such as John Mcenroe, Bjørn Borg, Martina Navratilova and Martina Hingis. If Liverpool International Tennis Tournament inspires you to get your family into tennis there are plenty of ways to get involved....

Why play tennis? Tennis is becoming an increasingly popular sport for children, with even kids as young as four or five getting involved. It’s not difficult to see why, as the physical and psychological benefits of the game are numerous.

Asked about the benefits of playing tennis Anders Borg, Tournament Director of Liverpool International Tennis Tournament, which will be running from the 20th – 23rd June this year commented: “Tennis is one of the few sports that is a sport for life. You can start playing at an early age until when you’re elderly. It’s a pretty technical sport so can be hard to master, but once you learn it’s worth it.

“It’s good for all parts of the body and you can keep playing it without suffering from the persistent injuries associated with games like football.”

Tennis can also help build general body coordination as children learn to position themselves correctly on the court, and can also help to improve motor skills as children learn to master moves such as angled volleys, drop shots and lobs. Hand-eye coordination skills develop as children learn to be able to properly assess and act upon a shot’s speed. As with any sport, playing tennis can also help children develop their work ethic as they learn ‘practice makes perfect’ and gives them a good grounding in one-on-one competition.

What do you need to get started? Your child will need a good pair of trainers that cushion the feed adequately, and a tennis racquet. Children under five will need to buy smaller, specially modified racquets that suit their size. Your child will also need a set of good tennis balls, and, if you intend to practice at home, a net. All of these can be bought inexpensively from high street sports shops or online.

Who to contact? If your child is interested in starting to play tennis, a good way to get started is to contact the Liverpool Tennis Foundation, which is run by the Community Foundation for Merseyside.

Restaurant Review

I love Indian food so when a friend of mine suggested heading to King’s Dock for an early dinner at EastzEast, opposite the Liverpool Echo Arena, I was eager to give it a try. Billed as the ‘home of Punjabi cuisine’, EastzEast was a million miles away from the sort of local curry house I usually frequent. We could just have easily been walking into a swanky cocktail bar as an Indian restaurant with the restaurant’s sleek black and white interiors.

After a warm and friendly welcome from our host, we were seated in one of the booths. While we perused the menu, we ordered a couple of Cobras from the extensive drinks list, which also featured wines, cocktails and some interesting mocktails.

We also ordered poppadoms, which came with an impressive eight dips, including favourites like Mango Chutney, as well as some of the more unusual pickles and chutneys. There was a vast selection of appetisers to choose from, and after much deliberation, we opted for Chicken and Prawn Puri (£6.95) and Chicken Boti (£5.95). The Puri was a delicious crispy fried chapatti, filled with chicken and prawns that had been cooked in a

masala sauce and the Boti consisted of succulent off-the-bone chargrilled chicken, which had been marinated in some flavoursome eastern spices.

When selecting our mains, we went with a couple of recommendations from our knowledgeable waiter. I usually opt for a medium hot curry like Dopiaza or Karahi so our waiter suggested I tried Chicken Massala Desi (£11.95). My friend, who likes a more meaty and spicy flavour, opted for Lamb Sookha Bunah (£12.95). We also ordered a Mushroom Pilau Rice (£3.95), a Keema Naan (£3.45) and a Peshwari Naan (£3.95). The Chicken Massala Desi was absolutely delicious and the Lamb Sookha Bunah (£12.95) was also a real hit. We left feeling very satisfied, vowing to return to King’s Dock again soon, just to spend another evening at EastzEast. EastzEast also offers a children’s menu.

In this year’s Budget Chancellor George Osborne announced a series of measures to help people to buy their own homes – good news for young families struggling to get on the property ladder or indeed older parents wishing to see grown-up offspring flee the nest.

The ‘Help to Buy’ scheme enables all purchasers to put just a five per cent deposit – significantly less than most banks typically

demand – on a new build home, even if they’re not a first-time buyer. The loans will cover all newly built homes up to a value of £600,000.

Up to 20 per cent of the cost of the home will be funded by a Government shared equity loan, which will be interest- free for the first five years, while the other 75 per cent will be funded by a traditional mortgage.

However, it isn’t a fast track to easy street on the back of property price inflation. After six years, borrowers have to pay a 1.75 per cent annual fee, which will continue to rise by 1per cent above the Retail Prices Index (RPI) measure of inflation each year after that. Similarly, the value of the loan is linked to the property’s value, so if the value of the property should double by the time the equity loan is

repaid, the loan will double in value too.The chancellor also introduced a new mortgage guarantee scheme which will include older houses as well as new builds, and see the Government guaranteeing 15 per cent of the value of a mortgage. This will be available for three years from the start of 2014 and will be used to support £130bn of mortgages.

It is hoped that both of these schemes will help to kick-start the housing market as cheaper mortgage rates become available to more people, though crucially, buy-to-let landlords will be excluded from the scheme.

British women still making boobs when

it comes to brasIn 1913, American socialite Mary Phelps Jacob was perturbed by the fact her whalebone corset would be visible under the plunging neckline of a gown she had just purchased. With two silk handkerchiefs, a length of ribbon and a healthy dose of imagination, she had soon invented a solution to her problem – the modern bra.

Quickly patented, the brassiere soon caught on and women soon began casting off their corsets for this less restrictive undergarment, which became symbolic of womens changing social status. While we may have been burning them in the 60s, and getting to grips with the wonder bra in the 90s, the popularity of the bra hasn’t waned. Yet despite the fact we’ve had 100 years to get used to them, it appears that the majority of UK women are still making a series of boobs when it comes to their bras.

A study of more than 1,000 women by retailer Bravissimo, found that only one in five women is confident they are wearing the right bra size, and that faux pas such as ‘the side boob’ (where wires in the cup sit on your breast rather than your ribcage) and ‘saggy cups’ (not enough support) were common.

The reasons for the frequency of such bra faux pas were clear, as the study found that 24 per cent of UK women admitted to never having had a bra fitting, and 21 per cent said they hadn’t been to a fitting for at least four years.

The eyes have it: Your

guide to getting perfect peepers

For those of us who are used to slicking on a coat of mascara and maybe a dab of eyeshadow if we’re feeling adventurous, the options suddenly available to beautify our eyes can be baffling. We take a look at the latest ways you can get your peepers looking perfect.

HD Brows High Definition isn’t just a new effect on the television, it’s also the latest thing in eyebrow beauty. Full brows are in fashion now, but if - like so many of us – you spent your teenage years being a little over zealous with the tweezers, it’s a look that can be difficult to achieve. Enter HD Brows.

This procedure typically involves your beautician assessing your face shape to assess what sort of bold brow look will work for you, and tweezing, plucking and threading until your brows are suitably upgraded. Prices can start at just £15 and can last up to six weeks. And because there’s minimal upkeep required at home, you needn’t worry about botching your beautician’s good work.

Eyelash extensions If your lashes are a little lacklustre and you don’t like the will-they-won’t-they-stay-in-place tension that

typically accompanies false eyelashes, extensions could be the answer. The process involves a trained technician applying individual synthetic lashes to your existing eyelashes. A full set typically takes an hour and a half to apply while a half set will take less time and will result in a more natural look. Providing you look after them (e.g. by not using oil-based mascaras) they should last as long as your natural eyelashes do – around six to eight weeks.

Botox If you’re finding your laughter lines anything but funny, it could be worth considering having the area around your eyes injected with Botox. While it may sound extreme, injected in the right area, botox can help minimise wrinkles and give you a much brighter, wide-awake look.

Semi-permanent eyelinerMany people are put off the idea of semi-permanent makeup by the fear that it is essentially tantamount to tattooing one’s own face. However, the truth is much less dramatic than that. In fact, much smaller needles are used, and the effect can be as subtle as you wish it to be. Many people who have undergone the treatment say it is not at all painful, so it’s well worth considering if you want striking eyes even as you roll out of bed.

Clean 9 puts you on the path to a cleaner, healthier, happier you whilst chemicals. This easy-to-follow 9-day programme will kick start your weight loss plan, putting you on the right path to take control of your health. According to the National Food Survey conducted by the Ministry of Agriculture Fisheries and Food, the average person eats about 20% less than they did in 1970. However, time pressures and the advent of ‘junk food’ also means that many of us aren’t eating very wisely.

So what is Brimstage Maze? “Brimstage Maze is a farm based visitor attraction. We have a large range of play equipment both indoors and outdoors, including giant indoor soft play barn, crazy golf, inflatables, pedal go karts, zip wires, adventure play and more. From mid July through to late September we also have the 7 acre maize maze which takes about an hour to solve. There is a smaller maize maze for younger children which takes about 15 minutes.”

What happens at a Brimstage Maze party? “On arrival you will be met by one of our team who will be responsible for the smooth running of your party. You will have access to all our play facilities, the order in which your group uses them is very flexible and depends on your preference and the weather, we will work with you to make sure everyone gets a go at what they want to do! If you wish to do the maize maze (open mid July to late September) then we recommend you split the children into groups of 3-6, each group accompanied by an adult, to solve the maze.”

What makes Brimstage Maze parties so special? “We do! Your party host understands that this is a very special day for your child our aim is to ensure that your child has a fantastic party that you are able to enjoy too.”

What about the party food? “We give every child a picnic box containing a ham and a cheese sandwich, a packet of crisps, small chocolate bar and a piece of fruit,

we also offer unlimited squash. All we ask is that you bring the birthday cake and candles. The party food is usually eaten in our soft play barn, Maizy Moo’s Madhouse, however if the weather is particularly nice you may prefer to eat outside in our lovely picnic and play area.”

And party bags? “We provide every child with a party bag and if you wish we will cut and wrap your birthday cake and add a piece to each party bag.”

What age group are your parties suitable for? “The parties are ideal for children aged between 2 and 10 years.”

What is the cost of the parties? “£12 per child for a minimum of 12 children during normal opening hours or have the whole site to yourselves for a private party outside these times for a minimum of 20 children.”

How do I book? “To discuss your party, call us on 07709 339490 or email us on [email protected]

Holy Communions: More in common with

weddings than just the white dressesWith Holy Communion season

nearly upon us, many of us may have noticed that these religious

celebrations have changed rather a lot since we were younger.

While previously Holy Communions were primarily celebrated in church and then – if you were feeling adventurous – by a bit of cake and a few sandwiches in the front room, Communion celebrations increasingly resemble weddings, as parents compete to make sure that their event is the one everyone attends – and talks about.

So how are they doing this? For a start, Holy Communions these days have far more in common with weddings than just the fact that they involve white dress and take place in a church. Increasingly parents are investing in hand-crafted invitations and even special Communion ‘favours’ such as bespoke candles or customised sweets. Special Holy Communion confetti – shaped like bibles, crosses, doves and prayer books – is now on the market too, and parents are increasingly willing to pay professional photographers for portraits of their child and reportage style shots of the day’s events.

Similarly, while children used to receive a simple gift such as a prayer book or rosary beads on their special day, the gifts are getting ever more extravagant with relatively large sums of cash an increasingly popular option.

But is this all appropriate? As Christmas, Easter and personal religious events such as weddings and christenings become increasingly materialistic, many see the commercialisation of Holy Communions as simply inevitable and a bit of harmless fun. Others argue that throwing large

parties to celebrate a Communion detracts from the religious aspect of the day, and turns what should be a holy sacrament into simply an excuse for a knees-up and another day of sheer indulgence for children who are already routinely pampered.

So how to hit the happy medium? If you would like to hold a slightly more extravagant party for your child, it may be worth talking to other parents to see if you can join forces. Hosting a party with several other parents will not only spread the cost significantly, it will probably also be much more fun for the children and stop the focus being purely on your own child. Similarly, requesting donations to a charity – perhaps of your child’s choice – is arguably more appropriate and in keeping with the spiritual nature of the event than allowing your child to receive lots of gifts.
