Whitney HollomanTopeka High High School GPA: 4.4 Sport: TennisParents: Scott & Gina HollomanWhitney participated and excelled in every sport she played, including track and

field and tennis. She came to practice with great optimism, enthusiasm and was

always in the pursuit of excellence. She never questioned authority and was a leader

to her teammates. She is a great example of what a student-athlete should look like.

Lauren MaisbergerShawnee Heights High School GPA: 3.78 Sport: VolleyballParents: Fred & Shawn MaisbergerWhile at Shawnee Heights, Lauren lettered in four different sports including basketball, cross-country, track and volleyball. In track she qualified for state for three years. She is in the top 10 for mile runners in Shawnee Heights school history. This year for Shawnee Heights, Lauren helped the volleyball program win all three tournaments that varsity entered. Lauren not only accomplished great things athletically, but also academically. She was a member of the National Honor Society her Sophomore through Senior year. She plans to play volleyball at Pittsburg State.

Madeline HillWashburn Rural High School GPA: 4.04 Sport: TennisParents: Jeff & Nanette HillMadeline has had a four year career that is unparalleled in Topeka tennis history. Playing at the 6A level she has been All-State four times, all in singles. At the 6A Tournament she placed all four years, finishing 1st her sophomore year and 2nd her senior year. Her accomplishments lie in quality of her opposition. To say she was invaluable to her team would be an understatement. Madeline plans to play tennis at Washburn University.

Juanita Herrera Highland Park High School GPA: 3.60 Sport: TennisParents: Virginia Herrera-DooleyJuanita “Cori” Herrera was easily Highland Park’s most accomplished tennis player in the fall 2014. Coach Tom Rogers cited her work ethic and dedication as the primary reasons for her success. Juanita’s leadership is also noteworthy as she provided genuine support and a positive example to her teammates.

Bree SchmidtHayden High School GPA: 3.84 Sport: VolleyballParents: Lee Schmidt & Julie SchmidtBree was a 3-sport athlete while attending Hayden High school. Bree played volleyball, basketball and softball and excelled in all three sports. By playing three sports she demonstrated to younger athletes that you can play multiple sports and also excel in the classroom. Bree plans to play volleyball at Johnson County Community College.

Payton Summers Seaman High School GPA: 3.55 Sport: VolleyballParents: Jeff Summers & Cara Sloan-RamosPayton was a tremendous leader for the volleyball team. She was voted team captain by her peers for the leadership that she showed both on and off the court. Her determination, motivation and effort was always evident at practices and games. Payton led the team in digs and was second in passing percentage and aces. Payton helped lead the team to a sub state championship and a 37-7 finish of the season. She was voted 1st Team All-City, 1st Team All-League and was 2nd Team All-State 5A. Payton plans to play volleyball at Weber State University

Bailey Williams Topeka West High School GPA: 4.16 Sport: VolleyballParents: John Williams & Karen WilliamsBailey was an asset to the team in many ways. She’s a leader on and off the court and in the classroom. She is motivated and hardworking and tries to inspire her teammates. Not only does she excel on the court, but also in the classroom, and she is also involved in other activities, such as the mentoring program. Bailey plans to play volleyball at Ottawa University.

Alyssa SchultejansSilver Lake High School GPA: 4.0 Sport: VolleyballParents: Mike & Jennifer SchultejansAlyssa has been a two-time 3A Player of the Year, All-State 3A Tournament team and All-State 3A for three years, All-League honors for four years, #32 top recruit in the nation by prep volleyball.com and a 2014 Under Armour All-American. Alyssa possesses a dedicated attitude toward the sport of volleyball and her team. Coach Sarah Johnson says she put her teammates first and led her team to success in a positive, classy way with a fun-loving attitude and a constant smile on her face. Alyssa plans to play volleyball at Kansas State University.

OUTSTANDING MALE ATHLETEAlec BeattyTopeka High High School GPA: 4.20 Sport: FootballParents: Bob & Stacey BeattyAlec Beatty’s 2014 football season was the best in Topeka High School history. He passed and rushed for more than 3,000 yards and 41 touchdowns. He not only set Centennial League records but also helped lead the 2014 Topeka High team to set a state record for most average yards per game. He demonstrated his excellence as an athlete and as a leader. Alec was committed to excellence in the classroom, in the weight room and in how he treated his teammates with acceptance and respect. He plans to play football at Macalester College.

Reid FehrSeaman High School GPA: 3.51 Sport: FootballParents: Doug Fehr & Laurie CoxReid was a tremendous athlete on the football team, and was one of the few players who never came off the field. He excelled both offensively and defensively and served as captain- holding that position with honor. His talents, effort and leadership will be missed by our team next year. Reid was the recipient of the Marine Scholastic Excellence Award in Athletics. He plans to play baseball at Crowley County Community College.

Austin Halsey Washburn Rural High School GPA: 4.04 Sport: SoccerParents: Scott & Jennifer HalseyAustin is the most accomplished player in the history of Washburn Rural soccer and the City of Topeka. He is the only soccer player from Shawnee County to win the Gatorade Player of the Year and be named an All-American. His four year career at Rural included a State Championship, a runner-up finish and a 3rd place finish. None of those accomplishments would have happened without Austin. Coach Brian Hensyel says he is the most dedicated player and is the true definition of a student athlete. Austin plans to play soccer at Baker University.

Zach BoydSilver Lake High School GPA: 3.30 Sport: FootballParents: Richard & Shayla BoydZach was a defensive starter all four years of high school. His junior year he was leading tackler with 79 yards and averaged 37 yards on kickoff returns with four touchdowns. His senior year he had 69 solo tackles, 19 behind the line of scrimmage and five QB sacks. He played offense as well with 59 carries for 686 yards and 16 touchdowns.

Daniel HendricksTopeka West High School GPA: 4.18 Sport: SoccerParents: Daniel & Rhonda HendricksDaniel is a great leader. His work ethic is of the highest caliber. Not only is Daniel an athlete and a scholar but he is also in band and vocal music. He is extremely organized and disciplined to balance all he does at school and the many activities he has outside of school. Daniel plans to attend MidAmerica Nazarene University.

Nick ReesorRossville High School GPA: 4.06 Sport: FootballParents: Jeff & Cheri ReesorNick has been a tremendous person and an asset to Rossville High school. Nick was a dedicated student and athlete. He was a take charge kind of person who kept his commitments and took on every task given to him with enthusiasm. Nick was awarded All Mid East League Offense/Defense in 2013 and 2014. Nick plans to play football at Highland Community College.

Camden WheatleyShawnee Heights High School GPA: 3.84 Sport: FootballParents: Bill & Tara WheatleyCamden was an outstanding player in football and basketball. Camden is a tremen-dous worker, great leader by example and a tough competitor. He is well liked and respected by his peers and coaches, making a special impact on the team. Camden plans to play football at Baker University.

Antonio VegaHighland Park High School GPA: 3.80 Sport: SoccerParents: Maria MunozAntonio always brought a great amount of dedication, commitment and willing-ness to do whatever the team needed. His senior season was his best and most challenging, it showed the character within this young man. Coach Jeremy Hall says he was a team leader, peacekeeper on the bus, and always a person he could count on. No matter what was asked, Antonio would grin, take a breath and say “OK coach”.

Jacob HeadHayden High School GPA: 4.11 Sport: FootballParents: Torrey & Jennifer HeadJacob is a team player in every sense of the statement. Playing football, basketball, and baseball, he sacraficed individual achievement for those of his team and team-mates. He played through injuries and set a great example of work ethic for the younger team members to follow. Jacob plans to play baseball at Washburn University.

Ken Darting graduated from Wamego High School in 1967 and was named the Outstanding School Athlete his senior year. He attended Highland Junior College and lettered in football, basketball and track, and was conference champion in the pole vault. Ken then transferred to Emporia State University and graduated in 1972 receiving a Bachelor of Science degree in P.E. and Social Studies. He was a member of the Hornets baseball team earning 1st team All-District 10 honors both his junior and senior years, and was named 1st team All-Rocky Mountain Conference as a third baseman as a senior. Ken earned a Masters degree in High School Counseling and Guidance from Kansas State University in 1978.

Ken began his teaching and coaching career in 1973 at Silver Lake High School. He served as the boy’s head basketball coach, boy’s and girl’s head cross country coach, boys and girls head track coach, and was the assistant football and baseball coach. His boys’ basketball team qualified for the Class 3A State Tournament in 1980, 1981 and

1982, winning the State Championship in 1981 and finishing 3rd in 1982. Ken guided the Eagle’s girl’s cross country team to the 1976 Class 3A State Championship and the boy’s team finished 3rd at the state meet that same year.

After taking a break from teaching and coaching to pursue further education and work in the private sector, Ken joined Coach Jack Hartman’s basketball staff at K-State as a graduate assistant for the 1985-86 season. Coach Hartman retired after that season and Ken was hired at Allen County Community College from 1986-1995. He served as men’s assistant basketball coach for two seasons, head women’s basketball coach for three seasons, head men’s basketball coach for four seasons, and head women’s softball coach for five seasons.

Ken was then hired as an assistant principal/teacher at Highland Park High School in the fall of 1995. In 2001, he became the boy’s head basketball coach. Over the next 13 seasons, Ken led the Scots to an overall 259-53 win/loss record, and a 136-21 Centennial League record. His teams won nine league championships, were undefeated league champions four times, qualified for 10 Class 5A State Basketball Tournaments and were State Champions four times, State Runner-Ups four times, and the 2006-07 State Championship Team was undefeated at 25-0. Five different teams were nationally ranked. During his tenure at Highland Park, Ken was the winningest basketball coach in school history and currently owns the best career winning percentage at .830. He was nine-time City Coach-of-the-Year, nine-time Centennial League Coach-of-the-Year, four-time Class 5A Coach-of-the-Year, and was selected four times as the Kansas State Coach-of-the-Year by the Topeka Capital-Journal (2001, 2004 & 2007) and the Wichita Eagle (2008). He has an overall career basketball head coaching record of 504-223. Ken was inducted into the HPHS Athletic Wall of Honor in 2013 and the Scots gymnasium and basketball court was named in his Honor in 2014.

Ken resides in Topeka with his wife, of 43 years, Karen. They have two children, daughter Krista lives and works in the music industry in Nashville, Tennessee and son Kerry lives in Topeka and oversees the Darting Basketball Academy.

OUTSTANDING FEMALE ATHLETEPaige CunninghamWashburn Rural High School GPA: 4.0 Sport: BasketballParents: David & Susan HendersonPaige had an incredible work ethic, a drive to better her skills and a competitiveness and desire to win. These traits along with her character and personality allowed her to be a great leader and teammate. Paige was a leader on teams that were less talented and willed them to be winners. She is the consummate teammate and win-ner. Paige plans to play volleyball at William Jewell College.

Kayla FaulknerTopeka West High School GPA: 3.25 Sport: BowlingParents: Eric Faulkner & Kristie SigleKayla brought a great attitude and work ethic everyday for four years. Her ability to make her teammates laugh made her a valuable member of the team from day one. After three years on JV, Kayla moved to Varsity her senior year and performed admi-rably. Kayla never gets down on herself and had the ability to keep others positive. She was a key member of the team that placed 2nd in league, 2nd at regional and won state. Kayla plans to attend Allen Community College.

Tatyanna LegetteSeaman High School GPA: 3.43 Sport: BasketballParents: Timothy & Sonya LegetteTatyanna is one of those rare athletes that is a coaches dream. She is extremely athletic, but also works extremely hard. She runs drills just as hard as she plays in games. She re-wrote the school record book, leading as both the top scorer and re-bounder in Seaman High School history. What sets Tatyanna apart is that she loves playing with and for her teammates. She was voted the Winter Sports Royalty, Snowball Queen by the student body. Tatyanna plans to play Basketball at Fort Hays State University.

Kirah Lohse Hayden High School GPA: 3.80 Sport: BasketballParents: Kurt & Kelli LohseKirah played tennis, basketball and soccer at Hayden. She was our point guard in bas-ketball and a major contributor in the girls soccer success over the past four years. As a multiple sport athlete she demonstrated to our younger athletes that playing several sports instead of specializing is a must for a school the size of Hayden. She is like the Energizer Bunny that keeps on running and running. Kirah plans to play soccer at Benedictine College.

Jennifer PheigaruShawnee Heights High School GPA: 3.55 Sport: BowlingParents: Michael & Lori PheigaruJenni is a multi-sport participant at Shawnee Heights. Lettering in golf and bowling. Over the last four years, she became a leader on our bowling team. Helping others to learn the sport and getting excited when they succeed. Jenni is an athlete that shows by example. She set lofty goals for herself as well as others and did whatever she could to make sure those goals were met. Jenni balanced athletics and academics very well and was an incredible teammate, team player, as well as model student. Jennifer plans to bowl at Grand Canyon University.

Kyra TuckerHighland Park High School GPA: 3.60 Sport: BasketballParents: Julius & Brooke TuckerKyra played basketball all through high school. She consistently displayed great leadership and sportsman like qualities and presented herself as a very supportive teammate and ideally coachable member of the Lady Scot’s basketball team. She was a spectacular athlete who always gave 100% and served as team captain in 2014 and 2015. Kyra plans to play basketball at Labette Community College.

John Fritsch Washburn Rural High School GPA: 3.93 SwimmingParents: Dale & Christine FritschJohn was a well-rounded student athlete, not just about his own sport, but

supporting other sports and their athletes as well. He spent countless hours

organizing Christian activities and helped raise hundreds of dollars in order to

support those in need in our community. John was awarded countless City, League

and State swimming medals and was also named to the All American Team. He plans

to swim at the University of Delaware.

OUTSTANDING MALE ATHLETEJames Beutler Highland Park High School GPA: 3.71 Sport: BowlingParents: William & Mollie BeutlerJames is a hardworking individual both in the classroom and on the athletic field. He was always striving to find ways to help himself become a more successful competi-tor. James was a team leader, always focusing on the positive, willing to help out whenever and wherever help was needed. He helped to motivate others by building up confidence when necessary . James plans to bowl at Coffeyville Community College.

Carter Hall Shawnee Heights High School GPA: 4.0 Sport: WrestlingParents: Jeff & Connie HallCarter was an excellent athlete and an even better person. He excelled in multiple sports and in the classroom. He was a great leader in practice, competition and in the hall ways. Carter has a great work ethic, he trained before practice and stayed after as well. He was always willing to help other teammates. Carter was named SHHS Wrestler of the year two times.

Tavarous GivensTopeka High High School GPA: 4.09 Sport: WrestlingParents: Heather ParkerTavarous has been a model of strength and leadership at Topeka High. He was a

team captain for football and wrestling. He was a member of the National Honor

Society and a very active member of the student body. He excelled at wrestling

while maintaining a quiet confidence. He endured difficult times, including the loss

of his father, and continued to be a leader. Tavarous plans to attend the University of

Kansas.

Brandon HowlandTopeka West High School GPA: 3.30 Sport: BowlingParents: Michele MorenoBrandon is a very talented bowler who combines a strong understanding of the game, the ability to repeat his shot and power. As a senior Brandon led a young talented team. He mentored the Freshmen which allowed the team to perform to its maximum. His efforts were rewarded by being named 2nd Team All-State Class 5A and 2nd Team All-City. He was a key member of a Regional Championship team and performed well at state. Brandon plans to bowl at Johnson County Community College.

Joe Miller Seaman High School GPA: 3.48 Sport: BasketballParents: Dwight Miller & Brenda FoxJoe Miller had an outstanding basketball career at Seaman High School. He constant-ly pushed himself to be the best player he could be and also encouraged his team-mates to do the same thing. Joe was a vocal leader in our locker room, at practice and during games. He always provided positive encouragement for his teammates and wanted nothing but the best for them. Joe was very competitive and he wanted to win, but he always showed respect for our opponents and the officials. Joe plans to play basketball at the University of Central Missouri.

WINTER SPORTS

John Martin Schmidt Hayden High School GPA: 3.81 Sport: SwimmingParents: Gerald & Laura SchmidtJohn Martin was a quiet leader. Leading through example and his work ethic. He was very disciplined and set high standards not only for himself but for those around him. John lettered in swimming and plans to attend Missouri University of Science & Technology.

Bill McDonald was a member of Topeka West High School’s first graduating class in 1962. Prior to that, he attended Topeka High School and was a member of the THS golf team both his sophomore and junior years, where he led Topeka High to the 1961 State Golf Championship. At TWHS, Bill was a member of the Charger’s basketball and golf teams.

Bill attended Washburn University and was a member of the Ichabods’ golf team from 1963-1966. He was a three-time NAIA All-American while at WU. In 1964, Bill was the lone qualifier from Kansas and won the United States Golf Association National Publinx Golf Championship held in Minneapolis/ St. Paul, Minnesota. In 1966, he won the Topeka City Match Play Championship. Bill’s dad Marion McDonald coached basketball and baseball at Washburn University.

Upon graduating from Washburn University in 1967 with a Bachelor of Music Education degree, Bill attended graduate school at Eastern Michigan University. He graduated in 1968 with a Master’s in Guidance and Counseling. In 1976, Bill received his Doctorate of Education in Guidance and Counseling from Wayne State University in Detroit, Michigan. He worked as a high school and middle school counselor, an elementary school teacher and an instructor at Wayne State University.

While living in Michigan for more than 42 years, Bill won 10 Michigan Publinx Match Play Championships. In 1981, he won the Michigan State Amateur Match Play Championship. Bill has qualified for 17 United States Golf Association (USGA) Championships. Bill won the United States Senior Challenge in the Super Senior Division in 2009 and 2010. Since returning to Kansas in 2011, he has won seven Kansas Golf Association Senior Tournaments, and the 2011 Trans-Mississippi Super Senior Match Play Championship. This year he won the Legends Division (70 and over) at the Georgia Senior Invitational in Atlanta.

Bill was inducted into the Washburn University Sports Hall of Fame in 1977, the NAIA Hall of Fame in 1986, the Michigan Publinx Golf Association Hall of Fame in 1988, the Michigan Golf Hall of Fame in 1992, and the Topeka West High School Sports Hall of Fame in 2002. In addition, in 2011 he was selected #67 in the Topeka Capital-Journal Top 100 athletes of all-time in Shawnee County.

Bill resides in Topeka with his wife Kathy. Their daughter Kerry and her husband Mike live in Hudson, Ohio with daughters Waverly Anne and Marion Margaret.

He pushed the other kids to do their best and never give up. In a lot of ways Rasheed was almost like another coach on our staff. He always wanted to see his teammates do well and improve. Rasheed will leave Shawnee Heights as one of the most decorated track athletes in our school’s history. He plans to participate in track at the University of Arkansas.

Joe ReaganSeaman High School GPA: 3.68 Sport: TrackParents: Robert & Cynthia BuschellJoe was six-time State Champion (three times in the 100 and three times in the 200) and all six times he was the fastest person in the state of Kansas - all classes. He set three school records (100m - 10.43, 200m - 21.58 and long jump - 23’4 1/2”). According to Carol Swenson he has the 10th fastest 100 all time in the state. Joe plans to participate in track at the University of South Dakota.

Sheri Norris graduated from Topeka West High School in 1982 and was Senior Class President. During her high school career, she was a two-time state tennis singles champion as a junior and senior (1980 and 1981) and posted a 103-2 win/loss record on the Chargers girl’s tennis team, with her only losses coming as a sophomore. Sheri won the USTA Missouri Valley Tennis Association Sectional Championships three years, once as a 16-year old in the 16’s (1980) and twice in the 18’s (1981 and 1982). She received early recognition earning a national ranking as a junior player.

Sheri accepted a full-ride tennis scholarship to Arizona State University in Tempe, Arizona in the PAC-10 Conference from 1982-86. While at ASU, she compiled a singles record of 86-31 and became a PAC-10 4-time All-Conference honoree and a three-time NCAA All-American. Sheri was a singles semifinalist in the NCAA National Tennis Championships in 1986 (senior year). During her senior year, she was selected to be a member of the U.S. National Junior Fed Cup Team among 10 of the top women collegiate tennis players in the country. Sheri earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Marketing at ASU in 1986 and was the recipient of the ASU Outstanding Female Scholar-Athlete Award. She was the recipient of the Phoenix Gazette’s “Best of Phoenix” Achievement Award in the same year. In 1991, Sheri was inducted into the ASU Sports Hall of Fame.

After a successful college career, Sheri began competing full-time on the Women’s Pro Tour playing WTA tournaments around the world including Europe, Asia, Australia, and South America. She competed in all the major Grand Slam Championships including the Australian Open, French Open, Wimbledon and U.S. Open, finishing her professional tennis career with a #189 world ranking.

Following three years on the WTA Professional Tour, Sheri accepted a position as ASU women’s tennis assistant coach and pursued graduate work at the university. Not long after, she accepted an offer as Assistant Promotional Manager with a leading tennis manufacturer and since has continued to grow her career in the racquet sports

Sheri was inducted into the Topeka West High School Sports Hall of Fame in 1992. In 2011, she was selected #15 in the Topeka Capital-Journal Top 100 athletes of all-time in Shawnee County. In 2013, Sheri was inducted into the Topeka Tennis Association Hall of Fame.

Sheri resides in Austin, Texas and is still very much involved in tennis as a District Sales Manager in the tennis industry selling and marketing tennis equipment and apparel.

She was a member of the volleyball and basketball teams for four years. As the lone senior on a young basketball team she was invaluable, and many of the players on the team looked up to her. Many of the school’s successes were built upon Regan’s efforts in practice and games. She plans to row at the University of Kansas.

MOST INSPIRATIONAL 2015Jaelynn Gay Seaman High School GPA: 3.16 Sport: WrestlingParents: Christopher Gay and Curtisha & Scott TaylorAt the 2015 5A State Wrestling Tournament Jaelynn was in the third period of

his first match when his knee cap dislocated. Continuing in the tournament was

not recommended, but Jaelynn wanted to continue and he won. On day two he

won as well giving him 100 victories for his career. No matter the outcome on

the scoreboard, he always gave it his all and conducted himself with dignity and

respect.

Zach Holmes Shawnee Heights High School GPA: 3.7 Sport: Football & BaseballParents: Doug & Susan HolmesZach is so inspirational because of his battle with adversity and his ability to come out on top. At the start of his senior football season, doctors found a blood clot. His chances of recovering to full strength were high, but Zach would have to give up football. His teammates respected him so much that they selected him captain of the team. Zach never complained or made an excuse. He is humble, supportive and selfless. Players were inspired by him. In the semifinals, Zach was released to play. He plans to play baseball at Cloud County Community College.

Marcus Meier Hayden High School GPA: 3.33 Sport: Basketball & FootballParents: Tom Meier & Lorelei AmmonsMarcus played 13 football games as a tight end and defensive end and signed with WU to play football. In the 8th game of his Senior season in the Basehor Tournament he fractured his knee. The doctor said he was looking at 6-8 weeks in a splint. Through the whole injury process Marcus was very up beat and positive about his return because of his positive attitude and willingness to rehab he was able to come back and play in his final basketball game as a Hayden Wildcat. Cooper Perry Topeka West High School GPA: 3.28 Sport: SoccerParents: Brad & Beth PerryCooper is a good leader who led on and off the field. Cooper excelled at both soccer and golf. Both his junior and senior years on the teams were ended prematurely when he tore his ACL in both of his knees. When he could no longer play due to his injuries, the level of play on our soccer team dropped drastically. Cooper plans to attend the University of Kansas.
