Dear Friends,
This season in America presents us Jews with a bit of discomfort. How do we fit in? How do we respond to “Merry Christmas”? How do we endure the relentless playlist of Christmas songs on the radio? As a minority religious group, we will always have to negotiate this tension, or just tolerate it.
On the other hand, we are truly privileged to live in a country that protects religious diversity. One great advantage of being Jewish in America is our access to many authentic and fulfilling forms of Judaism. Many, though, do not appreciate America’s Jewish diversity.
I read with chagrin that Israel’s Ashkenazic chief rabbi, David Lau, strongly criticized Israel’s education minister, Naftali Bennett, for his recent visit to a Solomon Schechter school in New York. Rabbi Lau’s condemnation of Bennett speaks for itself:
To speak deliberately with [Solomon Schechter] and to recognize it and its path, when this path distances Jews from the path of the Jewish people, this is forbidden. If Minister Bennett would have asked my opinion before the visit, I would have said to him explicitly, “You cannot go somewhere where the education distances Jews from tradition, from the past, and from the future of the Jewish people.”
What a damaging and hurtful statement, particularly coming from Rabbi Lau, a prominent leader of the Jewish people. His statement, delegitimizing publicly the Jewish authenticity of a Schechter school, speaks volumes about the status of non-Orthodox Judaism in Israel. It is also infuriating.
Rabbi Lau fails to “get it.” He does not understand that millions of Jews throughout the world show deep commitment to Judaism in many meaningful ways. Education Minister Bennett, on the other hand, does “get it.” After his visit to the Schechter school, he tweeted, “What a love of Israel, what a love of Judaism.” The fact that Bennett is Orthodox makes his observation of that Conservative Jewish school all the more important.
As we move past Chanukah to encounter the rest of the Jewish year – next stop: Tu b’Shevat! – may we observe our holidays with integrity, and may we celebrate them joyously and proudly.
Kol tuv – all good wishes, Rabbi Jeffrey Weill

SOCIAL ACTION CORNER January/February 2016 –
Ruth Siegel – Chair
During 2015 the Social Action Committee activities included continuation of the following:
Participation (with Men’s Club and Sisterhood) in both the Pesach and Rosh Hashanah Maot Chitim food box packing events.
Reinforcement of the EHNTJC relationship with SHALVA by maintaining their informational posters and the cell phone collection program.
Hosting two Clothing/Textile Drives that provided the opportunity for people to get rid of unwanted items that were repurposed through donation to other organizations that give usable clothing to those in need and conversion of unusable textiles (soiled, excessively worn or torn) into either rags or filler.
Presentation of three programs: First was "The Rising Tide of Anti-Semitism" by Amy Stoken of AJC. Our second program was an environmental information and service program at the Talking Farm in Skokie. The final program was a presentation on "The Legal Rights of Older Persons" which was co-sponsored by The Decalogue Society, The Human Rights Clinic of The John Marshall Law School and The Jewish Judges Association of Illinois. .
Two service dates for EHNTJC members who volunteered at the Uptown Café.
New in 2015 we have established a Caring Committee and are looking for volunteers from the congregation to provide various services to fellow congregants in need. For 2016 we plan to continue our ongoing activities and have scheduled three service dates at the Uptown Café. We are also planning some exciting new activities for improved cross-cultural awareness and appreciation.
WAYS & MEANS Judy Frank – Chair
CANTOR’S CONCERT A GREAT SUCCESS!!!
Cantor Benjamin Warschawski presented a beautiful concert on Saturday evening, November 7, 2015. We are grateful to him and his pianist, Yasuko Oura, for making the evening so special. The Silent Auction and Super Raffles added to the fun of the event. The Dessert Reception was a great ending to the evening. Thank you to Debbie Reich, Stewart Reich, Ada Rabinowitz, Jeanette Sigler and the Ways & Means Committee for their extraordinary help. We appreciate those people who came, donated items, bought Silent Auction items and Super Raffle tickets and helped in any way they could. Because of your support, this rescheduled concert was a financial success for our synagogue!
