eptsgg Our holidays are not merely points on a calendar; they are interlinking narratives. On Purim we feel precariousness; a month later we celebrate G-d’s redemption. Passover’s redemption climaxes with Shavuot’s revelation of Torah. Yom Kippur’s vulnerability is capped by Sukkot’s belief in divine providence. We also detect a link from Chanukah, recently concluded, to Tu b’Shevat, on the horizon. Chanukah describes a nes gadol, a “great miracle” of a tiny volume of oil lasting for eight days. Just as the ancients in Israel depended on olive oil for light, cooking, and lubrication, so do we depend on oil of a different sort for our energy needs, from cars to power plants. We recently have enjoyed falling oil prices. This year’s Chanukah miracle surely is the miracle of filling the minivan for less than $75. But we must understand the implications of our oil consumption. Cheap oil ought not blind us to the scientific consensus that burning fossil fuels causes greenhouse gases which contribute to climate change. Despite its affordability and portability, burning oil negatively impacts the environment. This is where we can link Chanukah to Tu b’Shevat. Chanukah is about oil and Tu b’Shevat offers a message of environmental protection. Contemporary celebrations of Tu b’Shevat frequently remind us of the Jewish mandate to honor creation and to be shomrei ha’adamah, protectors of the earth. Torah and rabbinic literature clearly state our ecological obligations. From Torah’s injunction not to destroy fruit-bearing trees during times of war (Deuteronomy 20:19), our sages articulated the mitzvah of bal tashchit, prohibition against wanton waste. And a midrash depicts G-d showing Adam the “praiseworthy” trees of the garden, and then admonishing, “Do not spoil [these trees], for there will be no one after you to fix what you have destroyed” (Kohelet Rabbah). I understand that we will continue to burn fossil fuels for the foreseeable future. As we turn to cleaner burning natural gas, I hope and assume the process of “fracking” will become increasingly safe. But we should consider natural gas a “bridge fuel,” not a permanent solution. Rather, we should increasingly use renewable forms – solar and wind, as well as nuclear – in order to wean ourselves from oil. Chanukah is about that oil; Tu b’Shevat celebrates the warming sun. May we acknowledge the connection, thinking hard about the role oil plays in our lives, while we look forward to a sunny, solar-powered world. EHNTJC RELIGIOUS SCHOOL Shimrah Bullock-Adkins, Chair

HEBREW PROFICIENCY In November, Religious School students in grades 3-7 completed their first Hebrew Language Assessment. This assessment is designed to monitor Hebrew language proficiency over time. Two more tests will be administered before the end of the school year to assess each child’s Hebrew language proficiency.

HANUKKAH On the first night of Hanukkah, our students (grades 3-7) participated in reciting the blessings and lighting the menorah with the Rabbi, the School Administrator and their teachers, Jacob Wallach and Josh Morrel. In addition to eating latkes and applesauce, the students received gelt and played dreidel. Our Lehrhaus students also celebrated the first night with Rabbi Weill and Michael Rosenberg.

TORAH TROPE CLASSES FOR DALED/HEY STUDENTS We are excited that Cantor Fortuneé Belilos will begin Torah Trope Cantillation Lessons for our Daled/Hey students. Cantor Fortuneé Belilos will conduct eight classes and students will learn the musical phrasing and varying intonations of the Torah trope. These classes will assist in preparing students for their upcoming Bar and Bat Mitzvahs.

MANDATORY PARENTS MEETING There will be a mandatory Parents Meeting on Tuesday, January 6th, 2015 at 5:30pm.

PURIM CARNIVAL – MARCH 1st, 2015 The Religious Education Committee is seeking sponsors for our upcoming Purim Carnival which will be held the morning of March 1st, 2015. TODAH RABAH! – EHNTCJ TRIBUTE AD BOOK HONORING RABBI NEIL & ERICA Z”L BRIEF A

HUGE SUCCESS!! There are many people to be thanked for the success of this tribute book. Rabbi Brief – Thank you for allowing us to dedicate this book to you and your beloved wife, Erica. This was truly an honor for our synagogue. Debbie Reich is an amazing individual. Not only did she keep track of all the ads that came in but she also did all the typesetting for the ads. We can’t thank you enough for your involvement with this beautiful tribute book. Thank you Jeanette and Bill for dealing with all the ad book related stuff and thank you to the entire Ways & Means Committee for all your help and support. This book is the largest and most financially successful tribute book that I have been involved with at this synagogue. It is due to all of you for your generous donations. If you placed an ad in the book and have not yet seen the book, please stop by to check out your ad. Thanks again one and all for your love and support of the Briefs and of this wonderful congregation! Our best wishes, Ada Rabinowitz & Judy Frank Tribute Ad Book Co-Chairs

EHNTJC SOCIAL ACTION CORNER Ruth Siegel, Chair

This month we are sharing the 2014 Social Action Committee Report for a summary of the past year. If you have ideas for Social Action Committee activities, or would like to serve on our committee for the coming year please let us know.

EHNTJC SOCIAL ACTION 2014 ANNUAL REPORT

During 2014 the Social Action Committee activities included continuation of the following:

Participation (with Men’s Club and Sisterhood) in both the Pesach and Rosh Hashanah Maot Chitim food box packing events.

Reinforcement of the EHNTJC relationship with SHALVA by maintaining their informational posters and the cell phone collection program.

Hosting two Clothing/Textile Drives that provided the opportunity for people to get rid of unwanted items that were repurposed through donation to other organizations that give usable clothing to those in need and conversion of unusable textiles (soiled, excessively worn or torn) into either rags or filler.

New activities for 2014 included:

Presentation of a three part series about relations with traditionally under-recognized/represented groups and issues of inclusivity, difference and commonality. The first program focused on Black-Jewish relationships. The second program discussed issues of transgender Jews. Our final program was a presentation on domestic violence.

Co-sponsorship (with Adult Education Committee) of a program about hate crimes presented by Decalogue.

A service date for EHNTJC members who volunteered at the Uptown Café.

A Metals & Computer recycling event.

For 2015 we plan to continue our ongoing activities and schedule more service dates at the Uptown cafe. We are also exploring service dates at the Ark where a food pantry is maintained. Other activities will be discussed at a Committee meeting before the end of the year.

EHNTJC offers heartfelt condolences to…

Bruce (Amy) Claver on the loss of his

mother, Naomi, grandmother of William and Sarah.

Roz (Jack) Goldberg on the loss of her

sister, Regina Silverman.

Neal (Cynthia) Toback on the loss of his brother, Perry.

Larry (Judy Orbach) Schoeneman on the

loss of his father, Joe and his mother, Marian, grandfather and grandmother of

Hannah and Leah.

The friends and family of Roz Gallai.

May G-d comfort them among the mourners of Zion and Jerusalem.

In Loving Memory If you wish to honor the memory of a dear

one, a most fitting, traditional and dignified remembrance is through a memorial plaque.

Each memorial plaque, bearing the name and yahrzeit date, is mounted in the Memorial Alcove in our chapel. On the day of the yahrzeit, your loved one’s name is listed on a tablet in the chapel alcove.

For more information or to order a plaque, contact Bill Gerber in the synagogue office.

The following memorial plaque has recently been dedicated in the chapel:

Benjamin E. Novoselsky by Henry and Debbie Novoselsky
