With “one small hand” we shut it all out. Fruitless pursuits and distractions. Chronic resentments and prejudices. Enduring vanities and endless desires. Each one is a hand before the eyes, warping life’s lights and mysteries. And what are those lights and mysteries? What do we fail to behold? First, we fail to behold the wonder of it all. The “enormous lights” include our billions of stars and galaxies. The “mysteries” include the humblest mollusk. Wonders everywhere! And we are too distracted to notice. Second, we fail to behold others. With selfish little hands, we block from view those who need our attention. Parents and children, spouses and siblings, friends and strangers -- how comfortably we ignore them! And how easily we justify our disregard. “Well,” we might say, “he or she is annoying, or difficult, or different.” Once we have labeled them as such, shutting them out becomes easy. Third, we fail to behold ourselves. We find convenient excuses to avoid introspection, to flee honest self- assessments. Why take a long, hard look at ourselves when we can blame others? When something goes wrong, we blame a co-worker, or a fellow congregant. When we fail to correct bad habits, we blame “circumstances beyond our control.” The hand before our eyes is tenacious. But there is a remedy! The High Holy Days offer our best hope for removing that hand. These awesome days provide a process, beginning with the month of Elul, for sustained introspection and serious efforts to change. I pray that this upcoming season ennobles each one of us to behold the manifold splendor of the universe, affirm those who cross our paths, and see ourselves honestly as we walk the path of teshuvah, repentance. Dear Friends,

“Alas!” cried the Baal Shem Tov, “The world is full of enormous lights and mysteries, and each

one of us shuts them from view with one small hand.”

The Baal Shem Tov is teaching that we all have the uncanny habit of obscuring the splendor laid out before us. We find convenient excuses to avoid introspection, to flee honest self-assessments. Page 2: Ezra-Habonim, the Niles Township eptsgg Jewish …...will resume on Thursday, October 20, 2016 at 11:00 a.m. in the Sukkah at the home of Marty & Shirley Lubowich 4545 Davis Street,

Greetings, As I write this message we are still a ways off from the High Holidays. As a matter of fact, the Summer Olympics in Rio have been occupying a large chunk of my TV time recently. But it is never too early to reflect upon the past year, thinking about what was good and what can be improved as we pass into the New Jewish year. The Olympic Games in Rio have been my inspiration. I love the Olympics. I love the competition. I love the pageantry. I love the gathering of so many nations. I love the highs. I love the lows. I love the Refugee Team. I love seeing the best in the world practice their respective “crafts” with such super-human precision. But what I loved the most was watching the world put aside most of its petty differences for two short weeks and join together in respectful competition. This was very poignant to me after a year of what I feel was ripe with social, racial, and political tension in this country and globally. (Now, those of you who know my style understand that I tend to steer clear of taking a public stance on politics, and divisive world issues in my “preaching” role as Cantor. And this message is no exception. I don’t feel it appropriate to use the pulpit as an activist’s platform, rather it should be a safe space for all, not just those who agree with everything I think.) Put aside your petty differences and join together in competition! This is what I love about the 2016 Rio games. I love seeing the world celebrate an athlete’s nationality/ethnicity rather than judge them based on it. I love watching athletes of various nationalities/ethnicities compete side by side with no rancor. (Mostly!) I love forgetting about what divides us tribally and remembering what binds humanistically. In this case, the higher call of striving to be the best you can possibly be through athletic competition.

This is akin to how I view the upcoming High Holiday season.

I love the High Holidays. I love the competition. I love the pageantry. I love the gathering of so many different types of Jews. I love the highs. I love the lows. I love the Refugee Team. (Aren’t we all spiritual refugees somehow?) I love seeing the best in the world practice their faith with such super-human precision. I love seeing people celebrate each other’s background/religious observance rather than judge them based on it. I love watching people of various backgrounds and religious observances compete side by side for G-d’s attention with no rancor. (Mostly!) I love forgetting about what divides us tribally and remembering what binds humanistically. In this case, the higher call of striving to be the best you can possibly be through prayer, repentance, and charity. If we can allow the Olympic flame from Rio and the Eternal Light from EHNTJC to linger in our hearts throughout the rest of the year, it will go a long way towards easing the social, racial, and political tensions around the world. If we can allow the Olympic spirit and the High Holiday feeling to permeate the rest of our year, it will go a long way towards easing the personal tensions that we all deal with in our lives daily. This is my prayer and my blessing for us all in 5777! On behalf of Heather, Adina and Samuel, I wish you all a Shana Tovah Um’tuka/A Good and Sweet Year! Warm regards, Cantor Benjamin Warschawski

For 37,000 Chicagoland Jews, the Yom Kippur fast is not always a voluntary activity. Please help us end the shame and pain of hunger. During Rosh Hashanah, bags will be distributed for you to fill with non-perishable kosher food items and paper goods and return to Ezra-Habonim, the Niles Township Jewish Congregation on Yom Kippur. These items will be donated to The ARK for distribution to Chicagoland Jews in need.

Ezra-Habonim, the Niles Township Jewish Congregation

In Loving Memory If you wish to honor the memory of a dear one,

a most fitting, traditional and dignified remembrance is through a memorial plaque.

Each memorial plaque, bearing the name and yahrzeit date, is mounted in the Memorial Alcove in our chapel. On the day of the yahrzeit, your loved one’s name is listed on a tablet in the chapel alcove.

For more information or to order a plaque, contact Bill Gerber in the synagogue office.
