eptsgg Dear Friends: The weather heats up these summer months, and so do politics. Presidential campaigns become turbo-charged. Rhetoric intensifies. Ads multiply. And we will be inspired (maybe) and disgusted (likely). Jews will not remain on the sidelines. We want to be part of this process and we should be. All Americans have a duty to listen, evaluate and choose. I would caution, though, against three impulses that sometime obtain at the intersection of Jews and politics. First, don’t bully. Political passion is fine. But sometimes our passion becomes anger. Ridicule ensues. Words become weapons against those who disagree with us. Such an attitude will, of course, always fail to draw someone to your point of view. It is also arrogance, suggesting there is only one right way – my way. Civil discourse in a democracy involves acknowledging that other points of view often have merit. And that political differences should not lead to demonizing. Second, no litmus tests. For some, Israel is the highest priority. For others, it is the economy, or the environment, or women’s issues, or gun violence. Do not insist myopically that others share your own top priority. Rather, allow friends, neighbors, and fellow congregants to rank their own top policy issues. I hasten to add, though, that certain issues – Israel, for instance – are of special concern to American Jews. It is important to be well-versed on issues that affect our people. Third, don’t cozy up. In Pirke Avot/Ethics of the Fathers, we read, “Al titvada la’rashut. Do not become overly familiar with authority” (2:3). Our ideologies sometimes lead us to cultivate close relationships with particular candidates and elected officials. Close relationships are good, but we should not get too close. If we are too close to a one party, for instance, we may sacrifice relationships within another party. We need good relationships on both sides of the aisle. Moreover, we need to feel comfortable disagreeing with our favored representatives. We need to be able to say, “Yes, I support your position on this issue, but I am not at all happy about your position on that issue.” Being too closely tied to particular candidates – as some rabbis demonstrated in recent years – compromises our independent religious and moral voice. The prophets upbraided powerful leaders when necessary. Religious people today – like us – must be able to do the same. (And, no, expressing moral and religious opinions in the public square does not violate the separation of religion and state.) I pray that all of us -- candidates, commentators, and citizens -- approach the coming elections with a spirit of common purpose and decency. EHNTJC Survey for Members

The Strategic Planning committee is, by definition, charged with looking to our future – where we want to go and how we can get there. But it is not just the committee members who need to be involved in the planning. All synagogue members should have their voices heard. That is what this survey is all about. We need to hear your voices as we plan for our future.

This survey was created by the members of the Strategic Planning Committee. We are asking every member to help plan our future by answering these questions. We will compile the results, share them with everyone and use them to inform our planning. This is our synagogue. Let’s plan for our future together.

Goldie & Cantor David Brandhandler z”l, Cong. Jan Schakowsky

On May 10, 2016, the North Boundary Hadassah group in cooperation with the Chicago Friends of the Israeli Defense Forces, hosted eight Israeli paratroopers for a special program in commemoration of Yom Hazikaron and Yom Haatzma’ut. Rabbi Brief’s grandson, Micha, was among the soldiers. He was a last minute substitution and a big surprise for his grandfather. The last time he had been to Chicago was a number of years ago with the Israel National Baseball team. Micha is now in the Israeli reserves, but served as a First Sergeant in the Paratroopers Brigade. He and his unit searched for 18 days for the three Yeshiva boys who were kidnapped and finally killed by terrorists. Rabbi Neil Brief and his grandson, Micha Naftali Brief He was married last year to Noa Greenshtein, whose family made allyah to Israel from Argentina. He presently serves as a security guard at the Court House in Lod and is enrolled as an engineering student in Ariel College of Judea and Samaria. Submitted by Gloriann Levy
