The animal chosen
• All (stray) animals we may encounter on the road with cars:
• dogs• Cats• foxes• hedgehogs• turtles• snakes• Bears etc.
The Problem• Thousands of stray animals beaten in the
streets by cars (often with human victims)• Accidents with vehicles • Damages• Stray animals is a problem in a lot of cities• Difficulties in collecting injured animals. Who
is responsible and who notifies the person in charge?
Existing situation• In a lot of countries nothing substantial is
done today• The animal is collected IF someone in charge
sees it or if someone informs the local authorities
• Risk of other accidents - infections• Solutions only for specific areas eg fences for
bears, not enough• Signaling for pets in a few cases
The research(1)• Visit a pet shop• Internet - Books• Visit to Technical School of Evosmos and
discussion with teachers• Visit by experts from the municipality of Kordelio
- Evosmos• Information from a workshop for stray animals• Contact with a technician for Android apps• Presentation by IT professor of our school
The research(2)• Solution with infrared sensor was rejected because:
1. Infrared do not detect only animals - difficult to distinguish the animals
2. Alert delays especially if a car is traveling at high speed so there is not enough time to react
3. It has a relatively short range
4. Risk of interference• Locating the animal through a magnetic field (animals
with chip) was rejected because:
1. Its range is very short so there is no result
2. It is difficult to implement
3. High cost
The solution(1)
• EDUCATION • Correct driving behavior• Traffic law compliance
The solution(2)
• Powerful Repellent for cats and dogs (and other animals) using ultrasound (cost about € 40-50). Repels pigeons, dogs, cats, foxes, rodents, deer, etc.) Ultrasound (frequencies 17-40 KHz) that animals perceive as danger.
• DOES IT WORK?• The animals hear sounds in a different range than humans.
Man hears frequencies up to 20 kHz.
Repulsion with ULTRASOUND
ΕΙΔΟΣ (κατά προσέγγιση) Εύρος συχνοτήτων (Hz)
Human 20-20,000
Dog 67-45,000
Cat 45-64,000
Cow 23-35,000
Horse 55-33,500
Sheep 100-30,000
Rabbit 360-42,000
Rat 200-76,000
Mouse 1,000-91,000
Hedgehog 250-45,000
Bear 400-50,000
Ferret 16-44,000
Horse 55-33,000
The solution(2)
• COMPLETELY harmless to humans and animals (sound waves)
• Low power consumption (2.5 W)• Long range (sound speed 1,224 km / h)• And if you put it in the car?• ONLY one is enough.• It may disturb the animals in the cities.• Automatically activated by SOSTRAY application (or
manually) into "hazardous" areas outside cities.
The solution(3)• Mobile application: SOSTRAY (prevention and recording
accidents with animals)• There is a similar app: Waze• Link to Google Maps (free).• Automatic update of the responsible authority of each
municipality (position identification via GPS).• Records incidents and create black spots maps. You can
record not only accidents but also "near misses" accidents.
• Alerts the driver when entering a dangerous area.• Labeling proposals in the field.• All with two clicks!
Does Waze allow free use of the data?
• YES! The map data is already available and can be used for free for non-commercial purposes. Developers can communicate and have access to real-time APIs. In the future more data will be given to use.
The innovation• There are similar applications, but ...• NONE of them* creates maps that keep in the
file data that shows the degree of risk areas.• NONE of them* automatically alerts (via SMS
or e-mail) the responsible authorities.• NONE of them* triggers automatic protection
systems.
* than we know
The solution(4)
• Brand easily recognizable SOSTRAY• Mark for traffic signals on a road where
accidents with animals often occur.• Relatively low cost (server function - code).
Approximately € 5,000 + operating costs. It requires programming knowledge we do not have.
• Possibility of financing by insurance companies.
The contradiction
• Distracts drivers and causes further accidents.• It requires Internet to function.• A lot of people must be involved.• Ultrasound does not always turn away
animals.
ANSWERS?
Diffusion• Contact with the local authorities of the city of
Kordelio-Evosmos and Chalcedon• Creating an information website:
http://kidblog.org/evobots • Presentation on a tv show (Pella TV and
Halkidona WebTV)• Presentation on radio show• Entry on the blog
http://dimoshalkidonas.blogspot.gr
The future - other proposals• Recording animal habits with the use of GPS.• Labeling of dangerous situations for both humans
and animals.• Detection of dead animals using microchip already
implanted in them.• Installation of system with rubber lining on the car
bumpers to repel animals falling on them so they are not injured or killed by the collision. Research is needed for the material.
• Protection even of the insects hitting the windscreen
