When I was a little girl…

Page 6: ENG 287 Project

I was afraid of the dark.

Page 7: ENG 287 Project

I was afraid of the dark.

I thought that when the lights went off, monsters would come out.

Page 8: ENG 287 Project

I was afraid of the dark.

I thought that when the lights went off, monsters would come out.

And that monsters loved to eat little girls like me.

Page 9: ENG 287 Project

I’ve grown up since then.

Page 10: ENG 287 Project

But sometimes, I still get afraid.

Page 11: ENG 287 Project

I worry about new monsters now.

Page 12: ENG 287 Project

I worry about new monsters now.

What is to become of my future?

Page 13: ENG 287 Project

I worry about new monsters now.

What is to become of my future? Will I find a job after graduation.?

I worry about new monsters now.

What is to become of my future? Will I find a job after graduation?

What if I’m a failure?

Page 15: ENG 287 Project

I worry about new monsters now.

What is to become of my future? Will I find a job after graduation?

What if I’m a failure? What if I disappoint my parents?

I worry about new monsters now.

What is to become of my future? Will I find a job after graduation?

What if I’m a failure? What if I disappoint my parents?

What if no one thinks I am a good writer?

Page 17: ENG 287 Project

Sometimes, these monsters are so scary that I just stay in my bed all day because it’s comfortable.

Page 18: ENG 287 Project

But one day, I read this true story about a boy around my age for my English literature class.

Page 19: ENG 287 Project

His name was Chris McCandless.

And he was an adventurer.

Page 20: ENG 287 Project

At the age of 22, he left everything behind and hiked in to the wilderness to live a life of solitude.

Page 21: ENG 287 Project

He saw a lot of beautiful things and wrote about them.

Page 22: ENG 287 Project

.

You could say he was a little crazy, but very brave.

(Maybe a lot of crazy.)

Page 23: ENG 287 Project

But he was smart.

Page 24: ENG 287 Project

In his journal, he wrote about facing the unknown:

Page 25: ENG 287 Project

In his journal, he wrote about facing the unknown:

“So many people live within unhappy circumstances and yet will not take the initiative to change their situation because they are conditioned to a life of security, conformity, and conservation, all of which may appear to give one peace of mind, but in reality nothing is more damaging to the adventurous spirit within a man than a secure future.”

Page 26: ENG 287 Project

I could not stop thinking about the words, “They are conditioned to a life of security…” And how they applied to everyone. Even little girls.

Page 27: ENG 287 Project

And so it clicked for me.

Page 28: ENG 287 Project

In order to avoid being mediocre, you have to step out of your comfort zone.

Change is necessary. Change brings personal growth, flexibility, improvements, life values, strength, progress, opportunities, new beginnings as well as a replacement in the routines followed.

Page 29: ENG 287 Project

Sometimes this change is scary. It is unknown. It is your monster. But that’s okay.

Page 30: ENG 287 Project

Because a life of monotony is a waste of adventure.

Page 31: ENG 287 Project

Because a life of monotony is a waste of growth.

Page 32: ENG 287 Project

Because a life of monotony is a waste of greatness.

Page 33: ENG 287 Project

So whenever I start to worry,

Page 34: ENG 287 Project

I remember Chris McCandless’ words.

Page 35: ENG 287 Project

And how I cannot be afraid of the dark forever.

Page 36: ENG 287 Project

Instead, embrace it.

Page 37: ENG 287 Project

Because it means you’re growing.

Page 38: ENG 287 Project

Because it means you’re growing. learni

ng.

Page 39: ENG 287 Project

Because it means you’re growing. learni

Page 40: ENG 287 Project

And then, it’s impossible to be mediocre.

The End.
