2. Jennifer PinkelmanCM220: College Composition II: Section 12March 1, 2012 Kaplan UniversityProfessor Ellen Manning 3. Medicating our youth to treat ADHD isnecessary to help the child get back tonormal behaviors that will help themlead a more successful and productive life.I know it is not If I dont take themine, but I just hadmedication, I will notto have it be a nice boy and I will(Pinkelman, 2012).hurt my sister(Pinkelman, 2012). 4. Characteristics of ADHD 5. Having a child seen by a Psychologist, a doctor of the brain, will give you a more in depth analysis oftheir ADHD disorder. ADHDcan be diagnosed by otherprofessionals too! Nurse Practitioners, aPediatrician, a GeneralPractitioner, a Psychiatrist, or a Neurologist. In addition, a Social Worker can diagnoseADHD ("Who can diagnose," n.d.). 6. Pharmacological treatments have been found to be an effective treatment plan that issafe and produces diminished symptoms of ADHD (Charach, Volpe, Boydell &Gearing, 2008).There are ways to diminish the symptoms of ADHD. Some forms of treatment may be: Stimulant Drugs Ritalin,Non Stimulant Drugs Strattera Adderalland IntunivAntidepressants WellbutrinBehavior Therapy behavior interventions, parenteducation, social therapy ("Nonstimulant therapy and," 2005-2012) 7. STIMULANT DRUGS *Prescribed first by doctors to treat ADHD* *Get into your system fast**Diminish symptoms of ADHD quickerthen other treatment plans* *Can cause side effects* 8. NON STIMULANT DRUGS *Not as harsh of a medication like stimulant drugs on the body**Takes weeks or months to get intoyour system* *Can cause side effects* 9. Every day, millions of people in ourworld take prescribed medications to treat their ailments that cause them tohave side effects. Even though side effectscan occur, people still choose to take the medication to make their daily livesfunction normally. SIDE EFFECTS THAT CAN OCCURE TAKING STIMULANT, NON STIMULANT, AND ANTIDEPRESSANT DRUGS TO TREAT ADHD:InsomniaHeadachesUpset stomachDepression Nausea and vomitingRacing heartbeatDizzinessTics Moodswings 10. ADHD may treat theirsymptoms through behavior therapy. Unfortunately, behaviortherapies are costly and that is why medication isprescribed first astreatment. 11. Multimodal treatment plans are among the most effective in our world today. The treatment plan consists of a medication, stimulant or non- stimulant, and behavior therapy. The reality is that children diagnosedwith ADHD vary considerably in terms ofthe severity and number of symptoms theyexhibit (Mayes & Erkulwater, 2008). Not every medication in our world today works the same for every person, so alittle trial and error needs to take place in order to find the most effective prescription for each individual child.("Attention deficit hyperactivity," 2008) 12. Medicating children with ADHD enables them tohave a normal childhood! 13.
