Recent Concerns in the Village As many of you may have heard on the news, we

recently had a rash of vandalism in the village. An e-

mail was to sent to those residents for whom we

have an e-mail address as supplied to us in our re-

quest for contact information. Most of the e-mails

appear to have been delivered, however a number

were returned for various reasons.

We sent the e-mail as we wanted to communicate

to you as soon as possible about this important mat-

ter. If you have an e-mail address and did not re-

ceive the e-mail but would like to be on our mailing

list, please send an e-mail to

[email protected] in the subject area type

"please add me to e-mail list". Also you may want to

put this in your contact list or otherwise enable your

e-mail to accept mail from this address.

We will not share your e-mail address with anyone.

And we will send you e-mail only on items which we

believe are important enough that they can not wait

for the monthly newsletter.

An additional update: We have received word from

the Manlius Police Department that two arrests were

made recently in conjunction with all the activity

dating back at least 2 years if not longer.

Treasurer’s Report Ed Bangel presented the final summary of our 2011 budget to actual costs incurred at the January 16th board meeting. We ended the year in a positive situation, with savings in some areas that helped pay for other projects such as various drainage and general maintenance items.

Ed also announced that the audit of 2011’s books would begin February 1st 2012. A summary of the results will be published and included in the annual meeting packet.

Manager’s Report Wynn Collins, Erie Village Maintenance Manager has been taking advantage of the good weather and performing re-pairs in preparation for the 2012 painting season. His crew has been replacing siding on a number of units and also repairing privacy fences. They will be painted this summer.

Plowing Not too much to report on this season’s plowing due to the lack of snow. Our plowing contractor did a great job re-sponding to the couple heavier snowfalls we have received so far this season.

Winter Safety Tips

Prevent snow from blowing in by placing rolled towels or rugs in front of exterior doors. Place between window panes and storm windows if windows tend to be drafty.

Check chimney or furnace vents, water heater, dryer and washer vents to keep them free from snow and ice. Exterior warm air outlets freeze up easily and can cause problems with your appliances.

Carefully remove icicles hanging from eaves of the house. Stand well away from falling icicles and knock them down with a long-handled broom or shovel. Falling icicles can be deadly, so take care.

Keep water pipes warm to prevent water from freezing. Fro-zen water in pipes not only means no running water, it can cause pipes to burst. Keep bathroom cupboard doors open to circulate warm air. Do not let your thermostat get below 60 degrees. In some houses, it may be necessary to let the water trickle to keep pipes from freezing during periods of very low temperatures. The best prevention method is to wrap exterior water pipes with heated, electrical cables called heat tape. Flush toilets periodically to keep water moving also.

Keep pets indoors and make sure they have safe access ways when they are outdoors.

Be extra cautious when you step out your door. It take the same second to check your footing as it does to have your feet fly out from under you and land you on your butt! Bro-ken hips, ankles and wrists are common injuries not to men-tion what could happen if you bang your head. Use salt or other ice melt products and give it a chance to work before becoming too confident of where you’re stepping.

If the power goes out, how will you stay warm? Make sure you have an alternate heat source for your home. This could be your gas or wood burning fireplace. If you’re plan-ning on using your fireplace, make sure your chimney is clean and ready to go and that you have plenty of dry wood on hand.

You should always have the following items readily accessi-ble: Candles, matches and fireproof candle holders, Flash-lights and extra batteries or a lantern, crank radio with NOAA access, Non-cordless landline phone, a non-electric can opener, individually packaged hand and foot warmers, and of course a first aid kit.

Make sure your house numbers are visible from the road in case of an emergency.

Battery Drop off at Wegmans:

Utilize the new battery collection boxes at all nine local Wegmans. Each bin has separate collection compart-ments for alkaline, rechargeable, and button batteries (including hearing aid, calculator and watch batteries). Put rechargeable batteries in individual plastic bags (provided) and place in “Rechargeable Battery” com-partment on the right.

Deposit alkaline batteries in the bottom compartment with the circular opening. The alkaline batteries do NOT have to be in plastic bags.

Place the button batteries (small round batteries found in watches, garage door openers hearing aides) into the clear container labeled “Button Batteries” on the left. The button batteries do NOT have to be in plastic bags.

Over 50 Locations Accept Rechargeable Batteries for Recycling: They accept them for FREE! For a complete list, visit: www. OCRRA.org/programs_battery.asp

Drop off at the Rock Cut Road Transfer Station:

Batteries can also be dropped off at OCRRA’s Rock Cut Road Transfer Station, 5808 Rock Cut Road, off Brigh-ton Avenue. Please separate rechargeable batteries from alkaline and button types. Put each rechargeable in a separate plastic bag.

Working together, we can continue to keep household batteries out of the waste stream.

Some other helpful recycling tips:

A Call For Volunteers We are looking for Volunteer Drivers for the "Road to Recovery" program which is coordinated by the Ameri-can Cancer Society. Volunteers agree to drive patients a couple of times a month to life saving treatments that they otherwise might miss when their caregiver is un-able to drive them. Our volunteers step in to make sure the patient does not miss a treatment. We give the driv-ers a few days notice to make sure it does not conflict with their schedule. We ask drivers to drive a patient to an appointment only Monday-Friday between 8:30 am and 4:30 pm.

For more information on the program, people can contact Stephanie D'Amico at 315-433-5658 or

Stephanie.D'[email protected]

Are you interested in information about

Hydro-fracking? Do you have an opinion one way or another? Do you want to learn more on the subject? Jeanne Creamer will be holding an infor-mal meeting on February 23rd at 3:30 PM at her home at 196 Summerhaven Dr. If interested, con-sider attending this informal session.

Request to Place Garbage in Grey Bin

Residents are asked to please place your garbage in your gray bin at the end of your driveway. Leaving bags out attracts crows who then break the bags open and garbage is strewn about.

Garbage and recycle pickup is weekly on Wednesday mornings with the exception of the holidays listed below where pickup will be delayed by one day:

Memorial Day week, July 4th, Labor Day week, Christmas week and New Year’s 2013—Pickup will be on Thursday.

2012 Garage Sale

It’s not too early to start collecting items to sell in this year’s annual community garage sale. The tentative date is Saturday, June 16th. Look for additional infor-mation in upcoming newsletters.

“Last night I dreamt I went to Manderley again” …. is

the opening line to Daphne du Maurier’s most famous novel. It is one of the great opening lines of English fic-tion. It is also the opening line that Alfred Hitchcock used for his 1940 screenplay of Rebecca.

At the January 2012 meeting, the timeless, gothic novel, Rebecca, made for a lively discussion. The book first pub-lished in 1938, is still in publication today. In addition to discussing the book, we also watched certain parts of the rented dvd during the meeting. We all wanted to see how the imposing Cornwall estate Manderly.

In addition, the book group also welcomed new member, Christine. Our hostess Betty made Italian Cheesecake and her mom’s recipe Dolly Cookies which were delicious. Here is our upcoming schedule: March 14 God Grew Tired of Us by John Bul Dau at the Goldberg residence, 201 Summerhaven. April 11 Don’t lets go to the Dogs Tonight by Alexandra Fuller. May 9 The Book Thief by Markus Zusak, June or July Ben Behind His Voices, author Randye Kaye who is a member’s cousin.
