SCHOOL SPECTACULAR

On Friday 25 November students from Years 3, 4, 5 and 6 went to the Sydney Entertainment Centre to watch the ‘School Spectacular’ and it was SPECTACULAR! While we were eating our lunch outside, we saw some performers practising their acts in very bright costumes. Some were skipping, others were playing in a marching band and some were even break dancing!

When we finally walked into the gigantic centre, we saw a brightly lit stage with lots of beautiful colours. There were at least 2000 kids there, which was pretty amazing to see, but a lot of us were worried that we would lose our teachers so we had to stay close to one another.

Before the show started we sang Advance Australia Fair. Next, the performance began. There was a lot of singing and dancing, and although most of the performers were talented high school students, there were some little children performing as well. The best part of the day was when Jack Vidgen sang! He was the winner of ‘Australia’s Got Talent 2011’. The audience went crazy! It was a great experience and we hope to go again next year. STAFF LEAVE Ms McKenzie will be taking Long Service Leave from tomorrow, Tuesday 29 November until Friday 9 December. During this time 6/5M will be taught be Mrs Havron. She will be following the class program set by Ms McKenzie. Mr Patterson will be acting as Assistant Principal during Ms McKenzie’s absence. Please direct any enquiries regarding the Year 6 farewell to him.

LAST DAY OF TERM What a great year we have had this year! Interesting programs and exciting learning for all of our students! However this year is now drawing to a close. The last day of school for students will be Friday 16 December. Years K-4 will be attending the Macquarie Centre movie theatre as an end of year treat. More details will be sent home with your child. Stage 3 will be remaining at school for water games and a pizza party. The school will assemble in the hall at 2.45pm for our last assembly of the year. At 3.00pm we will have the traditional farewell arch for all those students leaving the school.

PRESENTATION DAY Presentation Day this year will be held on Wednesday 7 December in the school hall. Everyone is welcome to attend. The Kindergarten to Year 2 Presentation Day will commence at 9.45am followed by the Years 3 to 6 Presentation Day commencing at 11.00am. It is expected that this will conclude at approximately 12.15pm.

GREEN TEAM You may have noticed that our vegetable garden has really taken off. The zucchini are getting longer and the corn taller. The children are really excited to see food growing in front of their eyes. We are never short of volunteers to water and find the bugs who like to feast on our growing produce. This week our General Assistant, Mr Gallagher, has assembled our new garden bed. A fruit tree has been donated to our school by Hornsby Council as part of the Ready, Set, Grow program.

MUSICA VIVA A very exciting group, Tigramuna entertained us with Latin American music last Thursday. Instruments included the double bass, guitar, drums and percussion. The most fascinating instrument was the rainstick; a percussion instrument made from dried cactus filled with rice. Our many thanks go to Mrs Townend who organised this event.

NEWS FROM THE LEARNING RESOURCE CENTRE

Last week children who completed the 2011 Premier’s Reading Challenge received their Certificates of Participation. Congratulations to those students who had successfully accomplished four years of PRC reading. These were not necessarily four concurrent years. They received a gold certificate from Mr Barry O’Farrell, Premier of NSW. Children who wish to take part in the challenge for 2012 may begin reading and recording their books from Thursday 1st December, 2011. All of the PRC booklists have been updated in the Learning Resource Centre and are also available online at the website: https://products.schools.nsw.edu.au/prc/home.html . All books must be returned to the library by this Thursday, 1 December, in preparation for our stocktake. Please note that overdue bills will be issued for any outstanding books. Mrs Lyn Campbell. Teacher-Librarian.

FETE 2012

A very successful kick-off meeting was convened this week. Many thanks to Sue Bailey, Janine Eastham, Lisa Olliffe, Esther Van Oppen and Josh Pitcher who joined us. Everyone had lots of great ideas for stalls, food, entertainment, rides and games. As soon as the date is finalised this will be communicated through the newsletter. Here at Epping Public School, we are famous for our international food stalls. In years past, we’ve had Indian, Sri Lankan, Turkish, Korean, Vietnamese and Chinese food stalls where all the food is prepared and cooked by parents. If you would like to help co-ordinate one of the food stalls or simply help, please contact us. Or maybe there is another cuisine, which you may be interested in helping? Please don’t hesitate to contact us. Except for the rides, everything will be organised by our school community i.e. there will be no stalls from external providers. This will be far more profitable and all profits will be put back into the school to provide more resources for our students. It will be a fantastic event but we will need assistance from the entire school community. Preparations will begin in earnest during Term 1 next year. More information will be provided then on how you can help. Watch this space.....

CHRISTMAS TOY CATALOGUES

Have you seen the great deals on offer? Go to: www.chalk.com.au or www.parentdirect.com.au Don’t forget to nominate Epping Public School at the ‘Checkout’.

WHAT’S HAPPENING? At each P&C meeting, Mr Ford gives a detailed report on happenings in the school and a Deputy Principal will typically give a talk on a subject of interest. The P&C meeting is also a communications forum between parents and the school, enabling the school to test new ideas with parents, and to listen to feedback from parents on issues which concern them. If you would like to keep informed of what is happening at the school, the P&C meetings are a great way to do this. There’s no obligation to participate at the meeting, parents are welcome to simply sit back and listen to the happenings around the school. Our next meeting is on Tuesday 13th December at 6:30pm. In addition to his normal report, Mr Ford will be giving a presentation on the School’s NAPLAN results for 2011. The last meeting of the year is typically a social event too, and a great opportunity to chat with the group informally after the meeting. I’d love to see you all at our last meeting 13th December. I hope you can make it.

Josh Pitcher, President.
