PLEASE PRAY FOR: OUR CONFIRMATION CLASS Stewardship Reflection December 2, 2018 We have arrived at the powerful season of Advent, a season to prepare with awe and wonder for the Feast of the Incarnation of Jesus — born to us as Savior and Brother. It is a season to prepare for His return at the end of time. It is also a moment to remind ourselves that that our individual judgment day is coming, too, when we will be called to give an account for all that God has given to us during our lifetimes. In other words, Advent is a steward’s season! Our readings for the first week of Advent waste no time in calling our urgent attention to these themes of reflection and preparation. They seem to shout, “Wake up! Get ready!” and offer us some practical advice as we enter into this season. The Gospel, from Luke, warns, “Beware that your hearts do not become drowsy from carousing and drunkenness and the anxieties of daily life.” How easy it is to lose focus on our Lord either by too much indulgence in our lives or by too much worry about our lives. Both extremes are easy to fall prey to. To avoid these traps this we are told to “be vigilant” and “pray for strength to sustain us.” During Advent, we Christian stewards must ask ourselves some hard questions. Am I staying faithful to my prayer life? Am I using my energy and skills to serve others? Am I overly concerned about material gain? Am I relying my “stuff” or my investments as my source of comfort or security? Am I living for the moment or for the coming of the Lord? Get ready Christian stewards! He’s coming! Let us prepare with awe and wonder. We have arrived at the powerful season of Advent, a season to prepare with awe and wonder for the Feast of the Incarnation of Jesus — born to us as Savior and Brother. It is a season to prepare for His return at the end of time. Parish Posada: A Posada is an old Mexican tradition developed to help missionaries teach about the Christmas Story, specifically about Mary and Joseph’s search for shelter prior to Jesus’s birth. Posada’s involve everyone, and include a novena, with a Rosary recited nightly in the days preceding Christmas Eve. Los Posadas will begin on Sunday Dec.16th. Joseph and Mary will lead the group on a search to find an “Inn” where Jesus can be born. When hospitality is found, a celebration will follow in the home. The schedule for the Posadas may be found on the tables, behind the back pews of the church. For more information, call Delores Shaw @ 423-5198. Our Lady of Guadalupe… Pot Luck Dinner In Celebration of Our Lady of Guadalupe Feast Day, Join us at the Parish Potluck December 9th at 11:00am. in the Parish hall. Bring your favorite Mexican food to share. Christmas Call to Sharing 2018 Priests pay an essential role of sanctifying, teaching and leading. They are servants to all. Very soon, you will be receiving an invitation from Bishop Kemme asking you to consider a gift to the Christmas Call to Sharing. Your gift is used to benefit the 37 men currently studying for the priesthood in the Wichita Diocese and the 19 priests in retirement. I would ask you to prayerfully consider a special gift this year to support our priests. Advent Reflections with Flocknote This Advent season you will be receiving, that is if you have signed-up, daily email reflections from Flocknote that will help you understand what Advent is and why we do/have certain traditions during this season, plus provide you with some spiritual coaching to prepare you for Christmas. So if you still have not signed-up for Flocknote and would like to receive these emails, then sign-up soon. If you already belong to Flocknote, then there is nothing more you need to do, you will automatically begin receiving the emails December 1st. There was an old Benedictine Monk, who, through a life of prayer and penance had searched for Christ for 50 years. One night, before the monk went to bed, he said to the Lord in prayer, “Lord, I have been waiting. I have been waiting my whole life to hear you and see you and meet you. I have been longing to sense your presence all my life, but I never have, and I’ve become discouraged” Some of us might be able to relate to that. The monk then heard the voice of Jesus say, “I will come to you tomorrow.” The old monk could hardly sleep he was so excited. And when the sun rose that morning he waited in his room for Jesus who had promised to come to him. The chapel bells began to ring for morning Mass, and he thought to himself, well, I can’t leave my room because Jesus is coming and I might miss him. There was then a knock on his door, and the old monk sprung up to open it. But it was one of his brother monks, who asked, “are you alright? Mass is starting!” The old monk said “You go ahead and start without me. I’m not coming today.” A couple of hours later, another monk knocked on the door, and said, “Come on, it is your day to bathe the sick monks and change the sheets and to feed them their soup and bread.” Again, not wanting to leave his room because he might miss the coming of Jesus, he said, “I can’t come, you’ll have to cover for me.” It was getting late, and the old monk began to get worried, when there was a knock on his door. Thinking Christ had finally come, he opened the door and a man stood there with his wife and three children. The man said, “excuse me brother, but there is a snow storm and we are seeking refuge, could you find us a room?” And the monk said, “I’m sorry, I wish I could, I’m just too busy, and I can’t be distracted.” And he closed the door. Midnight came, and the old monk was distraught and frustrated and upset because he felt that the Lord had not kept his promise. So in prayer he said, “Lord, you told me you would come to visit me today and I’ve been waiting all day and it didn’t happen.” The same voice he heard the night before said, “What do you mean? I came to you three times today, I came in the Eucharist, I came in the form of your sick brothers, and I came as a family needing your help, but you did not recognize me.” Let us pray that we may remain vigilant and not become drowsy, so that we may not miss the ways the Lord is coming to us this Advent season.
