GIVE FROM YOUR HEART. Help change lives through partnership.

“ Twenty fi ve years ago, a friend of mine

had some of Joyce’s cassette tapes and

we just started listening. All these years

later, I’m still learning from Joyce. I have

so many stories about how God has

used her to walk through life with me.

It’s amazing what God has done.

Joyce always says, “God has got you

strategically placed.” Well, He’s using me

to reach people where I live, but going

around the world is a little more diffi cult.

So that’s where I see Joyce come in.

I HAVE A HEART FOR THE PEOPLE OF INDIA. And even

though I can’t physically be there, my

As a partner, I’m a part of that blessing.

I’m a part of people knowing who they

STRAIGHT FROM THEHeart

I ’ll never forget the very fi rst message I ever preached at my fi rst meeting many years ago. I remember asking God what He wanted me to

say, and His reply to me was, “Tell them I love them.”

I admit at fi rst I wasn’t very excited about it. I thought, Everybody knows that! I felt like God was asking me to teach a sweet little “Jesus loves me, this I know” Sunday school lesson. I was expecting it to be something “deeper” than that.

Well, I learned that not everyone is so secure in God’s love for them. In fact, there is an epidemic of insecurity in our society these days. And I believe it is because people just don’t know how much they are loved by God. As I preached the message that day, I noticed people were just weeping and weeping. It seemed as though many of them had been longing to hear the simple truth, “God loves you.”

The Bible says God is love. It’s not just something He does, it’s who He is. Everything He does is based on love. His mercy and grace are poured out on us every single day because of His love. He comforts us when we’re hurting and corrects us when we need it because He loves us. Even when He doesn’t give us something we think we really want or need, it is because He loves us and knows what is best according to His purpose and plan for our lives.

All those years ago, when I thought I needed to start my ministry by preaching some deep, power-ful, life-changing sermon, even then God was only interested in establishing this ministry on His love for His people. Ever since, that’s what we’ve been doing—Sharing Christ and Loving People.

Over the years you’ve probably noticed changes in our magazine, TV program and website, along with the growth of our world missions outreaches.

“Many of

them had been

longing to hear longing to hear

the simple

truth, ‘God

loves you.’”

But what has not changed is the message: the Gospel of Jesus Christ—the ultimate expression of God’s love for us. Sending Jesus to die for the sin of the world firmly established this truth: God…loves…you. And that truth will never change. We just try to find as many ways to say it as we can!

Also over the years, our friends and partners have played a large part in spreading this simple but powerful message of God’s love.

Galatians 6:10 encourages us to look for ways and opportunities to be a blessing to people. And I believe that’s what God had in mind when He said, “Tell them I love them.” It all starts with a simple truth, God loves you. As people start to believe, trust and grow more secure in this truth, they naturally want to share His great love. Many of you, by partnering with us in outreach, have become a part of sharing God’s transforming love with so many others.

We are so grateful for all of our friends and partners. We always want to be sure you know how much it means to us for you to come alongside us in everything we do. That is why we like to give you regular updates of the many outreaches here at Joyce Meyer Ministries, through our magazine, radio and television broadcasts, on our website, and in our annual report each year.

For instance, with your help we’ve been able to respond with emergency aid to victims of natural disasters, such as tornadoes, wild fires, and floods, all of which occurred through-out the past year. You have helped us feed hungry children all over the world, as well as provide fresh, clean water, clothing and shelter, education, and medical attention for them and their families. You’ve helped us rescue

Every day we can tell someone He loves them by what we do as well as what we say.

“Every day look for ways and opportunities to be a blessing to someone around you.”

and offer restoration to victims of the horrors of human traffi cking.

You were with us as we ministered to inmates in prisons all over the United States and the world, providing hygiene gift bags to each one. And you’re with us as we continue to reach out to inner-city kids and families through various outreaches like the ones at our St. Louis Dream Center.

At our conferences throughout the year, you have supplied much needed items for our Supply Hope outreaches. And we’re also thankful to the medical professionals who volunteered their time and talents throughout this year. These people traveled with us, at their own expense, to remote areas of the world on our medical outreaches to help relieve some of the suffering of those who otherwise might never be reached.

You have been part of all this and so much more. That is God’s love in action. I believe when He said tell them I love them, that is what He had in mind. Love is expressed in words and actions. We can tell someone we love them…but even better than that is to show them through our actions.

God does so much for His children. We can never repay Him. But I don’t think He wants that anyway. I believe He just wants us to continue to tell others, through our words and actions, that He loves them too.

This holiday season is a perfect time to show God’s love! So I encourage you, not only now but every day, to look for ways and opportunities to be a blessing to someone around you. Ask the Holy Spirit for creative ideas for specifi c individuals. This is how we spread His love.

As we prepare to make the transition into a new year, I pray that each of you will grow more and more secure in the knowledge of God’s love for you…and as you do, the overfl ow of His love in your hearts will spill over onto others in your homes, churches, communities—and the world.

Tell them He loves them! And fi nd as many ways as you can to say it!

Her words had me riveted. She struggled to share her story with me and nearly couldn’t make it through. There came a point that she melted into my arms, tears choking off the syllables. As she clung to me and cried, her life permanently became a part of mine—I would never forget her pain or the grace of God that set her free.

Our stories are powerful. When we share a story or listen to someone else’s, we connect in a uniquely per-sonal way. That’s one of the reasons Jesus told parables, or more simply put, stories. He was a master at draw-ing people in and teaching lessons in a way that they would remember.

One of the largest blessings I have here at Joyce Meyer Ministries is the honor of sharing stories with you— stories of changed lives and over-whelming joy as well as those of great difficulty and sorrow.

An honor, absolutely, but a task that is not always easy. People pour out the intimate details of their heart, tragic life circumstances, abuse, unfath-omable suffering and absolute horrors. I have at times asked God why He has shown me so many terrible things.

I have visited many countries ravaged by war and genocide, people ruthlessly and pointlessly de-stroying one another…Rwanda, Cambodia, Uganda, Kosova to name a few. I have literally sat among the bones of the murdered, stood at the rim of mass graves, and walked the paths which once led to kill sites. These are things you never forget.

Countless people have shared their stories and I have listened. The girl who I began this article telling you about is named Pretty. She spent three years living on the streets, surviving un-speakable things, when she was only 10 years old.

There is Emmanuel, who lay in a pool of his own blood, helpless as he watched each member of his family die one by one in a Rwandan mass murder.

Now only (Reg. )

September 12-14St. Louis, MO

Natalia was a girl from a small Bulgar-ian village who woke up one dreadful morning shackled to a bed, the victim of human traffi cking. She shared hor-rors few can even imagine.

On the outside Nancy’s family looked the all-American dream. Behind closed doors this precious little girl was called

“worthless,” chained to a table, beaten and starved. She shared the truth few people could see.

But beyond each of these heartbreak-ing stories there is redemption and peace that only comes through Christ. Oh, what we miss if we don’t hold on for the good at the end of the story!

Pretty is now home with her family, who are receiving help and counseling, and she is back in school.

To this day Emmanuel stays at the site of that atrocity, caring for the grounds and sharing his story to keep the memory of his beloved family alive. He says his purpose is to keep other people from repeating the mistakes made in his country—he is working to save lives.

Natalia is now in a home where she is safe from her captors and sur-rounded by loving people for the fi rst time in her life.

And Nancy contributes her wholeness and healing to a God, who loves her no matter what her earthly father has said and done. She knows who she is in Christ.

I can recount hundreds of such stories. The memories of each are forever with me and still send tears down my face. Yes, I may rather tell stories of laughter, puppies and sunshine, but I no longer ask God why He has shown me such dif-fi cult things—instead I count each one of them as gifts.

I have learned that people desperately need us to listen, to be broken with them and to respond with Christ’s mercy and grace. Often that is their pri-mary need – to see in our eyes the God who weeps with them and longs to heal. That is why God tells us in Galatians 6:2 to “bear one another’s burdens, and so fulfi ll the law of Christ” (NKJV).

I understand all too clearly that it’s very diffi cult for many people to hear such stories…that this is rough stuff that breaks our heart or brings our own painful memories to the surface. But when God gives you the opportu-nity to listen and help, don’t turn away. He will strengthen and equip you.

Our challenge is not to grow calloused or squeamish but to be His ears as we lis-ten and His arms as we respond in love.

The simple fact is that there are too many people in the world who feel heartbroken and damaged to ignore their stories. You may be one of them, and God wants you to know that your story matters too. Oh, what you’ll miss if you don’t hold on for the good at the end of the story!

Beyond each of these heartbreaking stories there is redemption and peace that only comes through Christ. Oh, what we miss if we don’t hold on for the good at the end of the story!

I’ve been married to Dave Meyer for more than forty-fi ve years, and there are a lot of things I know about his character. For example, Dave is a very patient man with an easygoing personality and he is very easy to get along with.

A happy result of being in relationship with Dave is that it has helped me become more patient and easygoing too. So just imagine what spending time with God can do for you!

Many men and women throughout the Bible made it their mission to know God. Paul actually called it “his determined purpose” (see Philippians 3:10). King David said what he wanted most in life was to seek God and behold the wonders of His beauty (see Psalm 27).

The word seek means “to crave, pursue and go after.” By seeking God for themselves, Paul and David came to know the essence of His character. They fell deeply in love with God and wanted to be like Him.

We can also fall deeply in love with Him if we choose to seek Him in our lives.

Today I want to share with you one aspect of God’s character that I’ve come to know and love. It has helped me tremendously in my relationship with Him, with myself and with other

people. It is simply this: God is the God of justice.

God Makes WronG ThinGs riGhT If you have heard me share my testimony before, then you probably know that in the early years of my life, I had a lot of things happen to me that were totally unjust and unfair. I was sexually abused by my father, abandoned by my mother, and repeatedly rejected by my first husband who ended up leaving me for another woman.

My life was a complete mess then, and it stayed a mess until I turned my life over to God. Then, little by little, He began to bring justice into my life. God wants justice for all of us. He wants to be that hero in our lives who makes wrong things right. And He does even better than that. His Word actually says that He gives us double for our trouble.

Isaiah 61:7-8 says, Instead of your [former] shame you shall have a twofold recompense; instead of dishonor and reproach [your people] shall rejoice in their portion. Therefore in their land they shall possess double [what they had forfeited]; everlasting joy shall be theirs. For I the Lord love justice…and I will faithfully give them their recompense in truth, and I will make an everlasting covenant or league with them.

When we are wronged, God asks us to forgive quickly and completely. We need to allow Him to be our vindica-tor. When we do, we can be assured that God will bring justice in our life. I encourage you to seek God’s Word for wisdom and comfort. Bring your wounds before God in prayer and ask Him to fill you up with an overflowing of His love so you can forgive those who have mistreated you. Through that experience, you will come to know God more than ever before. And He will make you more loving and forgiving, like Him.

The Flip side oF God’s JusTice There’s another side to the justice of God that we need to know about: We can’t mistreat anybody else and get by with it.

Of all the people Jesus talked to in a fi rm way, it was the religious people—the people who said one thing and did something else. The churchgoers who led sloppy lives behind closed doors. He called them “whitewashed tombs” because they looked good on the outside but on the inside, were fi lled with dead men’s bones (see Matthew 23:27).

There was a time in my life when I was a hypocrite. I’d shout in church praising God, acting like I had it all together, but at home, behind closed doors, I was terrible to live with.

We need God to change us. We need to want Him to change us instead of making excuses for bad behavior. Thankfully, when we do wrong things, God doesn’t just let us get by with it. It’s not because He wants to punish us. It’s because He loves us too much to let us live that way.

The Bible says God chastens us and tells us our faults because He loves us (Hebrews 12:6). And we need to change and do whatever it takes to straighten things out in our relation-ship with God because one day, we will all stand before Him and give an account of our life (see Romans 14:12). God knows your heart. He’s merci-ful. He’s full of grace and love. He’s long-suffering. God knows we will never stop making mistakes, and still blesses us and is good to us and forgives us time after time. We also need to be good and gracious and loving to other people.

I like the fact that God is fair. Not only will He give me double for my trouble, He won’t let me live a junky life and get by with it. That lets me know He loves me.

I encourage you to let God shape you into someone who loves and actually longs for His correction. Because by bending to His will, we can become healed and whole, satisfi ed and happy.

GOD BRINGS US FROM GLORY TO GLORY Just as I’ve been positively affected by my relationship with my husband, Dave, being in relationship with God has helped me learn and grow as a person, because I’m just not satisfi ed to stay the way I am. The fact is, I’m in love with God and I want to be like Him.

I still have a long way to go, but I’ve come a long way. And I’ve learned not to be discouraged about how far I have to go. Instead, I’m excited about how far I’ve come.

Aren’t you glad God calls people who aren’t perfect and then changes us while we’re making the journey?God is full of mercy, especially when we’re ignorant of our mistakes. But we can open up a whole world of blessings in Christ if we just decide to live a little bit higher.

If you’re going to walk with God for the rest of your journey, get all you can out of your relationship with Him. Be a seeker and you will fall so in love with Jesus that you will put yourself in a position where God can bless you radically and outrageously.

It is only in close relationship with Him that you can live a life that brings glory to His name.

“BEING IN RELATIONSHIP WITH GOD HAS HELPED ME LEARN AND GROW AS A PER-SON, BECAUSE I’M JUST NOT SATISFIED TO STAY THE WAY I AM. THE FACT IS, I’M IN LOVE WITH GOD and I want to be like Him.”

We arrived in Cambodia through its capital city, Phnom Penh, but our destination—the Hand of Hope Health Center in Pursat—was a five-hour drive away. After about an hour, our view of bustling city streets filled with whole families aboard single motorcycles gave way to a scene of endless rice fields on both sides of our van.

As the landscape outside the window continued to change before us, my mind wandered back to the horrors that occurred from 1975 to 1979 during a genocide that set Cambodia back almost a full century…

knew it. With the severe loss of doc-tors, healthcare has been one of the industries slowest to recover. Because of this, Joyce Meyer Ministries estab-lished the Hand of Hope Health Center in Pursat, Cambodia.

Left ALone After the Genocide Ma Khat is one of many in Cambodia who wouldn’t have access to healthcare if it weren’t for the Health Center. She is 65 years old, but her frail frame and lined face suggest a longer journey. Her deep brown eyes, tender but skeptical, locked on us as we ap-proached the facility. Then our smiles were returned kindly as she placed her palms together in a prayer-like fashion in Cambodia’s traditional sampeah greeting, welcoming us to join her.

Although she never had the opportu-nity to have children of her own, she reminds me of a sweet grandmother whose feet you want to sit at and listen to stories for hours on end. Like millions of other Cambodians, 1975 ushered in devastation and loss for Ma Khat. The Pol Pot regime took the life of the man she loved, and she never remarried. While time has eased the pain and there’s a notable peace about her, the loss of her husband is one story she keeps filed away. Instead, she wanted to talk about why she came to the Hand of Hope Health Center.

“High blood pressure,” said Ma Khat. “Before this hospital was here, my life was up and down with my high blood pressure. I feared about my life and was afraid I was going to die.”

YeArs of inAdequAte cAre in cAmbodiA The genocidal loss of Cambodia’s educated physicians has resulted in dilapidated and under- equipped medical facilities wrought with poor sanitation. Medicine is in short supply and diagnoses at times appear to be little more than guesses

paired with ineffectual treatment. When a team from Joyce Meyer Ministries visited Cambodia in 2007, they witnessed this crisis firsthand and the vision for the Hand of Hope Health Center was born.

Since opening in March 2009, Hand of Hope has had the joy and privilege of providing quality medical care to more than 96,000 patients. And as the news of free care continues to spread throughout the circles of the poor, the number of patients grows rapidly.

“I became a doctor because I wanted to help the poor,” explained Dr. Chaorey Sok, who works at the Health Center.

“Many who go to the state hospital or private owned facilities have had to sell all their property to pay the doctor bills. Now they come here and get well for free.”

Tuberculosis, malaria, high blood pressure and diabetes are among the most common illnesses treated. In addition to the setbacks in education within Cambodia’s healthcare, the general populace has also been de-prived of basic wellness information for themselves.

It was April 1975. In the course of one day, children who had been playing happily in the streets outside their homes were marched with their families out of the city at gunpoint by Khmer Rouge soldiers. These very same roads we traveled now were the ones that led thousands upon thou-sands of innocent victims to starvation, torture and execution in Cambodia’s now infamous Killing Fields.

These atrocities, so recent in world history, claimed almost a third of Cambodia’s population: most of which were doctors, lawyers, teachers and other professionals helping to lead the nation. To this day, survivors still struggle to restore life as they once

ma Khat lost her husband during the genocide and couldn’t afford healthcare if it weren’t for the health center.

fashion. When I asked Ma Khat about the medical care she received before the Hand of Hope Health Center ar-rived, I discovered how significant this facility is to her.

“I never went to a doctor before this hospital because I’m poor and have no money for medical bills,” said Ma Khat. “I earn $2.50 a day and use that to pay my rent.”

Many in this poor farming community have little money and couldn’t afford to receive care if it weren’t for the Health Center. Thanks to the partners of Joyce Meyer Ministries, quality healthcare is now available to these precious people five days a week. Most times the healing is physical. Other times it has a more eternal impact because excellent medical care is wrapped in the love of our great God.

Ma Khat knows this well. She’s now been coming regularly for treatment for a year and a half.

“The doctors told me that my medicine has been provided by Jesus and that He loves me. I really thank God for the medicine. This hospital saved my life.”

While we refer to the facility here in Pursat, Cambodia, as the Hand of Hope Health Center, the loving communi-cation paired with medical care has inspired those in the surrounding community to establish a different name for it—the Jesus Hospital. We don’t mind that at all, and we think our partners would agree.

Thank you for providing much needed care in a nation that has suffered so greatly, and for bringing the love of Jesus to the hearts of so many.

“The level of education here is very low and so many are illiterate,” said Dr. Sok. “They don’t know how to take care of themselves. Their food isn’t well washed, and their diet is unbalanced.”

Injuries and illnesses considered minor to those in the western world can be life-threatening to those in rural areas like Pursat. Hand of Hope is helping change that reality by providing acces-sible medical care and education about hygiene, sanitation and nutrition as well as sharing the Gospel.

Education like this will help Ma Khat, one of nearly 200 patients treated the day we visited, with her high blood pressure.

She’d Never SeeN a doctor With her tiny hands folded in her lap, Ma Khat patiently waited for her pre-scribed blood-pressure medicine from the on-site pharmacy. Her feet dangled just above the floor in a childlike

The BiBle is no ordinary Book. The words within its pages are like medicine to your soul. It has the power to change your life because there is life in the Word! (See Hebrews 4:12.) And when you discover the power and truth of God’s Word, you will begin to see changes in your life that only this truth can bring. You will even learn how to recognize what the enemy tries to bring against you.

I’ve spent more than 35 years studying God’s Word, and throughout that time, it has totally changed my life. I’m not say-ing it will take that long for you to learn what you need to know, but we are all on a progressive journey in our relation-

ship with Christ. It’s important for each of us to start where we are and be determined to stick with it. You’ll find that every time you study the Bible, you’re learning something.

Proverbs 4:20-22 says, My son, attend to my words…for they are life to those who find them…. The word attend means “to pay attention to; to give time to something.” To attend to the Word of God is a lot more than just reading it; it’s meditating on it.

When you need direction, an encouraging word or you’re in a negative environment, it’s good to know that you can find life, healing and health in God’s Word. When you are in those situations, meditate on God’s Word. Repeat it over and over in your mind. His Word will penetrate your heart and begin to work in whatever situation you find yourself.

What Do I Study? — There’s really no wrong place to start. You can study anything that’s going to help you. If you’re dealing with anger or fear, use a concordance and locate those words to see which scriptures talk about those things.

If you can’t think of anything right away, thumb through a concordance and pick one of the words. Begin looking at all scriptures referenced with this word and read them. Ask the Holy Spirit to lead you, and He’ll help you and reveal things to you.

When I fi rst started studying the Word, I didn’t have very good relationships. I didn’t really understand what love was.

As I studied the subject of love, I learned it’s more than a gooey feeling; it’s a decision you make to treat people the way God would treat them. I didn’t know how to love people, or myself. By study-ing what the Bible says about love, I learned how to love. Then my life began to change.

Being able to apply what you study in God’s Word to your life, like I did on the subject of love, is just one picture of what studying the Bible looks like.

Four Effective Steps to Studying the BibleI want to share some practical things you can do to help you get started or make your time in the Word more effective.

1. Purposely set aside time. I make an appoint-ment with God in the mornings, but if that doesn’t work for you, fi nd a time that does…even if it’s not every day. Whatever you can do, that’s what you need to do. Just start somewhere and you’ll see the benefi ts this time will bring to your life!

2. Make preparation for your Bible study. Choose a place where you enjoy relaxing and can study—a room in your house where you can be alone or somewhere you are comfortable.

3. Have all your materials available. You’ll want your Bible, of course, but also get a good Bible dictionary, concordance, a pen and paper. That way, you don’t have to stop every few minutes to go get something.

4. Prepare your heart. Talk to God about things you may need to confess. Enter your study time peacefully and without anything that may block you from receiving revelation during your time with Him.

I want to encourage you to make the time to study because the Word has the power to change your life and help you become the person God wants you to be. No matter when you do it, or how long you do it, God’s Word will always make a difference.

od loves to spend to time with us! He loves us so much and wants to share His heart with us, and He wants us to share what’s on our hearts with

Him. I have found over the years that I am at my best and am prepared to do what I need to do each day when I spend time with God and in His Word. He fi lls me with His peace, joy, wisdom and everything else I need during those times. And as I’ve grown closer to Him, my trust in Him has grown, which is the key to living consistently with peace, joy, wisdom and every other good gift He gives.

Many people want to have a stronger, closer relationship with God, but they struggle to take time on a regular basis to invest in it. A devotional can provide a good way to slow down, whether you have a few minutes or longer, and focus on a scripture and an encouraging word. That’s what I hope you’ll experience with Trusting God Day by Day. As you read the excerpt “Because I’m in Christ,” you’ll get a taste of what I’m talking about. Take some time right now to draw closer to God and learn how to trust Him more. – Joyce

As far as the east is from the west, so far has He removed our transgres-sions from us. As a father loves and pities his children, so the Lord loves and pities those who fear Him [with reverence, worship, and awe]. (Psalm 103:12-13)

We put a lot more pressure on ourselves than God would ever put on us. God removes all that makes us unrighteous (our transgressions) and sends it as far away as the east is from the west. How far is the east from the west? A long way!

When my son was younger, he decided to do something nice for me. He got a bowl of water and went out on the porch. Soon he came to me and said, “Mommy, I washed the windows for you.” The porch was wet. He was wet. The windows were smeared up. But he did it because he loved me. God reminded me of this one time. He said, Do you remember what you did afterward? You sent your son off to get cleaned up and then you went and cleaned up his mess when he wasn’t looking.God showed me that He does the same for us.

God is aware of our imperfections, yet He receives what we do out of love for

Him. He cleans up our messes, and even works good out of them, because He loves us with a perfect love. He sees our faith in Him and through it considers us to be “in Christ.”

If God asks, “Why should I let you into Heaven?” the only right answer is, “Because I’m in Christ.” If God asks,

“Why should I answer your prayers?” the right answer is, “Because I’m in Christ.” If God asks, “Why should I help you?” the only right answer is,

“Because I’m in Christ.”

Jesus wants us to come fearlessly, confi dently, and boldly to the Father to receive mercy for our failures and grace for every need we have. He understands our weaknesses and faults. He understands that we are not going to manifest perfection every day. But we can ask God to forgive us for the mistakes we make and then go boldly before the throne to ask God to meet our needs.

Trust in Him. Do everything out of love for your heavenly Father. You can trust Him to answer your prayers and clean up your messes.”

ONE GIRL’S “IMPOSSIBLE” DREAM COMES TRUE

BY KACIE CAMPBELL

IVY LEAGUE BOUNDTHE U.S.

H A N D O F hope

COLUMBIA UNIVERSITY is in the heart of New York City. It’s also one of only eight Ivy League schools in the United States. It’s so prestigious that of the nearly 30,000 applications they received last year only 6 percent were accepted.1 But even though the odds were against her, Eboni Boykin was de-termined to be a part of that 6 percent.

She was in the seventh grade when a TV show birthed the dream of going to a school like Columbia. People imme-diately told her it couldn’t be done—for children in her circumstances rarely reach goals like this. But fi ve years later she defi ed the odds and achieved acceptance to the school in spite of the many struggles she faced along the way. Not only did she get accepted, she also received a full scholarship.

The Odds Were Against Her — When her mom, Lakista, was 17, she became pregnant with Eboni. Kicked out of her house, with nowhere to go, they entered their fi rst homeless shelter. Unfortunate-ly, it wouldn’t be their last.

Over the years Eboni’s family went from shelter to shelter and school to school, with long periods of time living in their car in between.

When Things Got Really Bad — At one point it seemed things were turning around for them when Lakista’s new boyfriend invited them to live in his home. But she quickly found herself in an abusive relationship. It wasn’t long before the abuse forced Lakista to sneak her children out in the middle of the night. They found themselves, once again, in a homeless shelter.

For a while, it seemed life would never get better. But all of that changed when the family decided

to move to St. Louis. Little did Eboni know this move would change her life forever.

Not long after moving into what would be their last shelter, 13-year-old Eboni began to dream of Columbia. She also began to realize the potential dangers of homelessness.

Church and Schoolwork Helped Her Keep Going School became her escape and drove her to study harder. Thankfully, she also was introduced to the St. Louis Dream Center, a church and outreach center founded by Dave and Joyce Meyer and sup-ported by Hand of Hope, Joyce Meyer Ministries World Missions.

She says the Dream Center encouraged her love of school and determination to succeed. Every Saturday, they would send a bus to pick Eboni and other children up from the shelter to attend their weekly children’s ministry, which combines fun, food and a Bible study. It was during these weekly events that Eboni learned about Christ and says she was able to connect with God on her own and became encouraged to pursue her dream.

“With the Dream Center bringing me into contact with people who really love God and instilling that in me…that was important with my school work and even setting the goal of going to col-lege. Because I could now think I can do anything through Christ who strengthens me instead of I live in this shelter and that’s it.”

Throughout high school, Eboni saved every penny to buy books—books about how to get into an Ivy League school and literary books that were above and beyond the requirements of her English classes. She worked on the newspaper and was a varsity cheerleader…all things that would help her chances of being accepted.

Even though her family eventually moved into their own place and Eboni did well in school, they still struggled at times. Eboni says she missed some games as a cheerleader because she hadn’t had enough to eat. Thankfully, the Dream Center’s

food pantry became a support to them, providing food more regularly to meet this need.

Pursuing a Greater Destiny — No matter what adversity she faced, nothing could stop this young lady. When Eboni’s new life began at Columbia in the fall of 2012, she knew she could pursue her new future with confidence. Thanks to God’s presence in her life, the support of her family and church, and her sheer de-termination, she knew even a homeless child could have a great future—despite how unlikely it may have seemed.

“I feel a greater destiny. I don’t feel the need to attach myself to everything I’ve been through because I know it’s going to be different. I’m glad God [didn’t let me] be attached to this. Being homeless is never going to happen again. I’m never going to be without food again. I’m about to get a great education, and I’m going to get a good job, and I’m going to be okay now.”

Her greatest desire is to use this op-portunity to pursue a career that will help others realize their God-given po-tential and know they don’t have to be defined by their beginnings. With God’s help, a person really can do anything they set their mind to—no matter the odds against them.

God has many characteristics, all of which are founded on His love for each and every one of us. Let’s look at God’s goodness, based on His love, and how it affects our lives…

1. First things first: Are you secure in God’s love for you? How do you see your life in relation to Genesis 1:31 and 1 Timothy 4:4?

2. Psalm 34:8 invites each one of us into a personal encounter with God’s goodness. Do your current circumstances indicate to you how good God is? Why or why not?

3. Considering your answer to question 2, in what way do you experience God’s love?

4. Considering 1 John 4:8, do your actions toward others express the love you have received? Explain.

O taste and see that the Lord [our God] is good!

—Psalm 34: 8

And God saw everything that He had made, and behold, it was very good (suitable, pleasant) and He approved it completely.–Genesis 1:31

In 1492, Christopher Columbus [whose name meant “The Christbearer”] opened up the New World to civilization. We all know of this event, but do we know what motivated Columbus to embark on such an arduous and dangerous journey? The following excerpts from his diary will tell us.

“It was the Lord who put it into my mind —I could feel His hand upon me—the fact that it would be possible to sail from here to the Indies…

“All who heard of my project rejected it with laughter, ridiculing me… There is no question that the inspiration was from the Holy Spirit, because He comforted me with rays of marvelous illumination from the Holy Scriptures… For the execution of the journey to the Indies, I did not make use of intel-ligence, mathematics, or maps. It is simply the fulfillment of what Isaiah had prophesied…

“No one should fear to undertake a task in the name of our Savior, if it is just and if the intention is purely for His Service… The fact that the Gospel must still be preached to so many lands in such a short time – this is what convinces me.”

While Columbus discovered the New World, God did not allow the country from which he sailed to colonize the territory which originally comprised the United States. ...Explorers carried with them the seeds of religious tyranny, and God had plans for America to be planted with seeds of liberty.

Historian Daniel Dorchester writes:

“While thirst for gold, lust of power, and love of daring adventure served the Providential purpose of opening the New World to papal Europe, and Ro-man Catholic colonies were successfully planted in some portions, the territory originally comprised within the United States was mysteriously guarded and reserved for another—a prepared people.”

During the century following the discovery of the New World, coloniza-tion occurred in much of South and Central America. In 1493 the Pope gave Africa, Asia, and Brazil to Portu-gal and the rest of Latin America to Spain. This is refl ected in the coloni-zation that followed. Every attempt to colonize the territory comprising the original United States was met with failure. God was preserving this land for a people whom He had yet to prepare.

In 1497, John Cabot, landing near the St. Lawrence River, laid claim to America for England. At this time, England, as all of Europe lived under civil and religious tyranny, yet…God would be at work in the sixteenth century to assure that this was changed.

B.F. Morris writes of God’s providential hand at work during this era:

“No era in history is more signally and sublimely marked than that of the dis-covery and Christian colonization of the North American continent.

“The intervening century was in many respects the most important period of the world; certainly the most impor-tant in modern times. More marked and decided changes, affecting science,

religion, and liberty, occurred in that period than had occurred in centuries before; and all these changes were just such as to determine the Christian character of this country. Meantime, God held this vast land in reserve, as the great fi eld on which the experiment was to be made in favor of a civil and religious liberty. He suf-fered not the food of Spaniard, or Portuguese, or Frenchman, or Englishman to come upon it until the changes had been wrought in Europe which would make it certain that it would always be a land of religious freedom.”

This copy is an excerpt from Mark A. Beliles and Stephen K. McDowell’s book, America’s Provi-dential History.

A Note from Dave Meyer: In the sixteenth century, God began to move in the hearts of many across Europe—especially throughout England. In order to establish America as a free Christian nation, God had to fi rst do a work in the lives of those who would become the founders of this great nation. America’s Providential History describes how key players such as William Tyndale, the puritans, William Bradford and even people like Henry VIII and

“Bloody” Mary each had a part to play in the birth of the United States and how hundreds of others were used by God to develop and estab-lish this nation for His glory. America’s history is truly His story. If you want to read the rest of the story, I encourage you to get this book.

“Every attempt to colonize…the U.S. was met with failure. God was preserving [it] for a people He had yet to prepare.”

Attitude

Many years ago at a conference, I tried the following experiment: I asked the crowd, “What one thing will determine our success more than any other?” The audience answered with words like job, money, education, and time. Finally someone said attitude. What I consider the most important area of our lives had come as a second thought. I believe that our attitude is the primary force that will determine whether we succeed or fail.

History’s greatest achievements have been made by men and women who excelled only slightly over the masses of others in their fields. Many times, the difference was attitude. The former Israeli prime minister Golda Meir underlined this truth in one of her interviews. She said, “All my country has is spirit. We don’t have petroleum dollars. We don’t have mines of great

wealth in the ground. We don’t have the support of a world-wide public opinion that looks favorably on us. All Israel has is the spirit of its people. And if the people lose their spirit, even the United States of America cannot save us.”

Certainly aptitude is important to our success in life. Yet, success or failure in any undertaking can more often be traced back to mental attitude than mental capacity. I remember when my wife Margaret was a schoolteacher. She would often come home frustrated with the emphasis in modern education on aptitude over attitude. If she’d had her way, the kids would have been tested on their A.Q. (at-titude quotient) at least as often as they were tested in their I.Q. (intelligence quotient). Every year she would talk of students whose I.Q. was high, yet their performance was low. And every year, she would have students whose I.Q. wasn’t particularly high, but their performance was.

There is very little difference in people, but that little differ-ence makes a big difference. The little difference is attitude. The big difference is whether it is positive or negative.

Every year as the holiday season approaches—usually beginning in late October—movie studios unveil major ad campaigns promoting their latest blockbusters opening on Christmas Day. Likewise, retailers saturate the airwaves with commercials announcing pre-Christmas sales—often as early as Halloween. The lion’s share of their annual advertising budgets are spent to ensure a big turnout at the malls the day after Thanksgiving.

What a contrast to the announcement of our Savior’s birth in a lowly stable on the outskirts of Bethlehem over two thousand years ago. No elaborate advertising campaigns. Just a star in the east pointing to His location. No media strategy to create plenty of “buzz.” Just an angel announcing His birth that same night.

And yet, the word-of-mouth was swift, the impact immediately felt. His mere presence on the earth established a new paradigm. A tiny baby lying in an animal’s feeding trough beyond the back of nowhere…but born to save the world. Hallelujah! Christ is born!

Then the angel said to them, “Do not be afraid, for behold, I bring you good tidings of great joy which will be to all people. For there is born to you this day in the city of David a Savior, who is Christ the Lord.” (Luke 2:10,11 NKJV)

Well over a year has passed since the traumatic night of May 22, 2011, in Joplin, Missouri. An EF 5 tornado packing winds of 200 mph cut a path over six miles long and three-quarters of a mile wide straight through town. Thousands of homes and hundreds of businesses were devastated, not to mention the injuries and loss of life.

But Joplin’s story doesn’t end there. Within hours after the twister touched down, response teams arrived with help and hope for the hurting.

“When disaster strikes, people’s lives are suddenly turned upside down,” says Hand of Hope CEO David L. Meyer. “Our number one goal is to be on the scene immediately, helping as many people as

we can. We do this by partnering with several relief organizations, including Convoy of Hope.”

Together, along with many other organizations, debris was cleaned up and supplies were funneled in. But this was only the beginning.

providing hope for the long haul Unlike other disasters, Joplin’s was different. “We knew imme-diately that this was not going to be your normal disaster,” said Jeff Nene, Senior Director of Commu-nications and Technology at Convoy of Hope. “This was going to take a long-term effort. Fortunately, we’ve had partners like Joyce Meyer Ministries, Hand of Hope that have come alongside and said ‘We see what you’re doing, and we want to…support it.’

“We started out just providing food and water to the first responders, and then within a day or so, we were providing food and water to victims. …That

hand of hope partnered with Convoy of hope to make these homes possible. Thanks to your faithful support and the many volunteers on site, they were all completed in under three months.

grew to food, water and cleaning supplies; and then we added small tools,” added Jeff. Within weeks, Convoy of Hope set up a “free” store, providing tornado survivors the needed supplies to clean and prepare for rebuilding. But there was still more to do.

Karen Benson, Convoy’s Director of Disaster Re-sponse, coordinates the placement of volunteers.

“Primarily we would be in and out of a disaster site fairly quickly,” she says. “This has been different for us in Joplin.” When asked why, she pointed to the generosity of thousands of Americans, including the partners of Joyce Meyer Ministries. As a result, Convoy of Hope has had the privilege of experienc-ing the long-term recovery phase, including the rebuilding of twelve innovational homes for people like Helen and Lee.

Meet Helen Owen and Lee Lansaw Helen lived in her two-bedroom, one-bath home since 1957. This spry eighty-year-old woman has five children and fourteen grandchildren but had no insurance when the tornado leveled most of her house. Thankfully, no one was lost—not even her son, Michael, who managed to ride out the devastating winds hun-kered down between the tub and toilet.

Months of waiting and the stress of the rebuilding process have caused Helen to have a few melt-downs. But seeing the foundation go in and the walls go up gave her a new lease on life.

How does the gift of a new home make Helen feel? “I just feel blessed…I just appreciate everything that’s been given to me.” Her eyes sparkled like a child at Christmas, as she stood in the entryway and began explaining the layout of each room. “I’m as happy as a lark, because I know this is mine….”

Incredibly, Helen’s home took about six weeks to complete and is one of two homes fully funded by friends and partners of Joyce Meyer Ministries, Hand of Hope. Lee Lansaw’s is the other.

Lee is no stranger to hard times. Growing up dur-ing the Great Depression, this eighty-four-year-old fighter remembers traveling the country with his family, turning scrap metal from old farm machin-ery into money for gas and food. Like Helen, Lee was at a friend’s house in another part of town when the twister hit.

“It flattened my place like a pancake,” explains Lee. “I slept in my truck for a week, slept in a tent two weeks, and now I live in a little house trailer...

Now I know what a sardine feels like.”

How does getting a new home make Lee feel? “It feels great…and I praise the Lord for it!”

The joy in Lee and Helen’s hearts is one of the main reasons Joyce Meyer Ministries, Hand of Hope is so grateful to be involved.

The Rebuilding Continues… Yes, a parade of trucks continues to carry in new building materials. The air is still saturated with the sounds of jackham-mers, nail guns and bobcats. But there’s more rebuilding going on—the rebuild-ing of souls.

Jeff Nene agrees. “I think the biggest thing has been the opportunity to share Christ. …When people are hurting, at their lowest, that’s when they are most receptive to the Gospel. …We’ve had the chance to share Christ with so many people who have gone through so many things.... It’s just been exciting for us to be a part of that.”

Through the support of people like you, the landscape of Joplin is being remade. Your gifts have helped deliver over 3 million pounds of food and supplies, build new homes for Helen and Lee and bring hope and healing to thousands of fami-lies.1 For that we say THANK YOU! So do Helen, Lee and their friends and families.

“There’s no way to say how much it’s ap-preciated,” expresses Bob Ellis, Helen’s brother. “Thank you is not enough.”

What’s next? “The opportunities are endless in this partnership,” Jeff Nene excitedly states. “It doesn’t stop with just one house or even twelve houses. It’s just the first step in a long journey of what God’s going to do!”

Vincent Newfield is an author, speaker and freelance writer for several worldwide organizations.

(1) Convoy of Hope Continues to Help Joplin Recover (http://www.convoyofhope.org)

Helen had scheduled an appoint-ment to set up insurance on her home but the tornado came one day early. Without insurance, she was left homeless. Your support pro-vided her with a brand-new home.

After the tornado flattened his home, Lee was forced to live in his car for a week and a tent for two after that. He's happy to be living in his brand-new, much roomier home.
