The evening will give you an opportunity to discuss your child’s progress with subject staff and your child’s Form Tutor. Years 11 and 13 Domestic exams December 2016 Domestic exams for these year groups will commence on Monday 5th December 2016. All tutors have been issued with a general timetable and a copy of this is available on the school website. http://www.ephs.ealing.sch.uk/uploads/7/4/6/2/74626919/domestic_exams_december_2016.pdf Year 10 students will also have an RS exam during this period. Individual timetables with seat allocations, will be issued as soon as possible. Any questions regarding the content of the exams should be directed to the subject teachers. Ms M Yates, Examinations Officer Changes to Mathswatch for KS3 and 4 students As from 1st December 2016 Mathswatch will be upgraded. Students can access Mathswatch at www.vle.mathswatch.com. A student’s username is their personal login to Mymaths with @ephs added at the end. For example, a student who logs into their portal on Mymaths with the username 123 would now log into Mathswatch with the login 123@ephs. All students’ passwords have been set to password . Up until 1st December 2016, students will still be able to access the old website that they are familiar with. The new website is now compatible with all smart devices and the app is no longer needed. Mathswatch continues to be a great source for students in not only helping to prepare for their internal assessments or external exams but also to consolidate work learnt in lessons. Work with your son/daughter to plan a regular time in their week when they use Mathswatch for these purposes. Ms N Worthey, Head of Maths.

Year 11 Tutor Time Literacy Activity: Developing Reading Skills for the English Examination Paper 2

Now that Year 11 have completed their mock examination on Paper 1, the focus in English lessons will now be Paper 2, where they will be studying non-fiction texts. When completing paper 2, they will need to read and answer questions on two different non-fiction texts from two different time periods. In tutor time, students will be developing the skills that they need to answer question 1 and question 3 of the Paper 2 examination.

Question 1 will always assess their ability to retrieve information from the text and will be written in a ‘true or false’ format.

Question 3 will always assess their ability to understand how the writer uses language to convey his or her ideas

This week, the text is taken from Paul Theroux’s travel article, ‘The Lesson of My Life’. After you have read the extract, there are two different questions for you to answer, similar to a ‘question 1’ or ‘question 3’ that you would find in Paper 2 of your English Examination.

Extract: I became a teacher in Africa and my whole life changed. I was happier, I had a purpose, and no one ever asked me, "What are you going to do with your life?" I had left home. I was becoming the person I wanted to be, not just a young man with a job but someone developing a sensibility. I had volunteered because I wanted to know the world and myself better. The route from New York to my destination, Nyasaland, took in Rome, Ben-ghazi (Libya), Nairobi, Salisbury (Rhodesia), and finally the tiny aerodrome at Blantyre. Flying low into that last stop, I could see tiny thatched-roof mud huts surrounded by banana groves and maize fields. This sight lifted my spirits. The thrill was intensely like being on another planet. In some ways it was just as remote, a parallel universe, but I thought of it as my Eden. That first departure for Africa led me to a lifetime of travel. It shaped the way I see the world and showed me that there was more to write about than my own inner miseries. I realized that what at first seemed so alien - a schoolhouse of barefoot students at the end of a red clay road - was not so different at all. Wishing to express this experience, I became a writer. People talk about culture shock - I should have experienced it when I saw those mud huts or had my first case of malaria, or my surprising bout of myiasis the putzi, or tumbu, fly eggs from my infested shirt hatching into maggots under my skin... I learned to cope. I got culture shock when I came back to the United States. The country was pretty much the same. But I was different. Like many people who have been affected by such an experience in a distant land, I did not come all the way home; nor did I leave that experience behind. It stayed in my mind, it informed my decisions, it made me strong. To all of this, there are people who will say, "What's the point?" But those are the same people who'll say what's the point of writing a poem, or learning a language, or going for a hike, or lingering on a wooded path to watch a bird flash onto a branch. Whenever someone asks me what I think he should do with his life, I always say, First, leave home. Get out there, where if you care to listen, you will find many other people dreaming of making connections and changing the world, just like you. The only mistake is in thinking that you will make an important difference in the lives of the people you're among. The difference will be in you. Q1: Choose four statements below which are true.

The writer volunteered because he wanted to become a teacher back home in the USA. He travelled from New York City to Africa. He was nervous when he first laid eyes on the thatched roof mud huts and banana groves. The writer didn’t get ill whilst he was in Africa. The first trip to Africa inspired a life time of travel. The first trip also made him want to become a writer. He sometimes askes himself, ‘What’s the point in being a writer?’ Whenever anyone asks him what they should do with their lives, he always advises them to leave home.

Q3: How does Paul Theroux use language to convey his first experience of travel? Remember when you answer question three you should aim to write four ‘Point, Evidence and Analysis’ paragraphs about four different language techniques

The point should refer to language technique used The evidence should be a short quotation. The analysis should analyse the effect and link it back to the question.

This week and next week, all our Year 7 students will bring home a free

book. This is a book which they have chosen to read themselves and which

they can keep and has been provided as part of the national Bookbuzz

scheme funded by BookTrust and the school, to promote the importance

of reading for pleasure, independent choice and a whole school reading

culture. I really hope they enjoy the book they chose.

Please support your child’s reading at home whenever possible. Whatever

ability your child has, please continue to show an interest in their reading. Encourage them to use the school and public

libraries to loan books and if your child is not yet fluent in their reading, or is still learning English, please spend time

reading with them.

There are copies of all this year’s Bookbuzz books to borrow in the library so if they really enjoyed their book but want to

read the others, they can. If you would like more information and activities related to the books, go to the Bookbuzz

website: http://www.bookbuzz.org.uk/.

If you would like guidance or advice on encouraging your child to read at home, please contact me.

Suggested answers to English Questions A1: Choose four statements below which are true.

A3: How does Paul Theroux use language to convey his first experience of travel?

Rule of three - ‘I was happier, I had a purpose, and no one ever asked me, "What are you going to do with your life?“’ – reinforce the joy and objective of the experience of travel.

Use of a list - ‘The route from New York to my destination, Nyasaland, took in Rome, Ben-ghazi (Libya), Nairobi, Salisbury (Rhodesia), and finally the tiny aerodrome at Blantyre’- reflects the length and complexity of the journey he took to reach his destination.

Use of simile - ‘The thrill was intensely like being on another planet.’- to convey how different it was from the world that he had come from and how isolated he felt.

Use of metaphor - ‘but I thought of it as my Eden’- to illustrate how he felt about the place that he had travelled to- it was paradise and it belonged to him.’

Use of powerful verbs - ‘fly eggs from my infested shirt hatching into maggots under my skin’ to highlight the horror of the experience of being ill.

Use of imperative verbs - ‘leave home. Get out there’ - to add weight to his view that all young people should experience travel in order to find themselves.
