Thought for the Week

Science Lecture The Science Department is pleased to announce that the next Science lecture by a visiting expert will take place during period 6 in the assembly hall on Tuesday 27th March and will start at 3:20pm The lecture is physics based and entitled ‘Building the future with quantum mechanics’. It will be delivered by Dr Jarvist Frost who is a researcher at Kings College. The lecture is open to all students. Students should see Mr Heffernan if they would like further details of the talk. Mr Heffernan, Head of Science Elthorne goes European! It has a been a busy European time at Elthorne just recently. In February, as a development of our links with our French exchange school in Ealing’s Twin Town, Marcq en Baroeul, we welcomed a Maths teacher, from the College Lazaro to do a week of observations in the Maths department. This was part of the College Lazaro’s Erasmus project and Ms Ahmad organised a schedule for her and made her welcome in the Maths department. On 8th March a group of Spanish students arrived from our Spanish link school in Madrid to stay with our Yr 10 students for a week as the return leg of the Spanish exchange organised by Ms Precup. On 12th March we welcomed a large group of teachers from all over Italy to our school. This visit was focused on exploring how we manage multicultural education, inclusion and teaching English as an Additional Language (EAL) for newcomers. This was part of an Italian Government initiative and was organised and facilitated by Ms Malik. Finally, on 15th March the College Lazaro group arrived as part of the first leg of the French exchange organised by Ms Kahan . Ms Kahan, Head of Languages

Welfare Any student bringing in medication to School must take it to the School welfare office along with a written permission note as to when this should be administered. Lost Property Lost property is building up with PE kits so please send your child to welfare to have a look before this gets taken away at the end of term. Ms Walters, School Welfare Officer Summer 2018 Public Examinations Timetable The exam timetable for the public examinations this summer is now available on the school website under ‘School Documents’ or by clicking here. This is the general timetable and contains all the BTEC, GCSE and GCE examinations that our students have been entered for. Students will receive personalised timetables with their room and seat allocations in the final week of April Ms Yates, Examinations Officer

HSA Update We were happy to spend some of our funds in the last couple of weeks. We paid for a new set of netball dresses for the school team and also are funding new art aprons for the 3 art rooms and some new brushes. Please continue to let us know if you wish to run for EPHS as part of the Ealing School Challenge at the Ealing Half Marathon on 30 September 2018. We are arranging another Curry & Quiz Night in the summer term - further details to follow. Start swotting now! Year 7 tutor groups will join us in fundraising at the EPHS Summer Festival on the afternoon/evening of 4th July. We can't wait to see what they will have on offer - and hope you will come along to support them. We will also be there with food and drink. For those who are not familiar with the EPHS Summer Festival - the Art/DT/Graphics departments are open to offer a great chance for parents and students to see the coursework from the Y11 students in Art, DT and Graphics, plus there is an evening of Drama and Music performances in the Hall. Come along, see how great the kids are, have some fun, and support the school! Our next meeting will be on 30th April, in the 6th form study room at 7.30pm. Hope to see you there. Our contact email is: [email protected]

Year 10 Pre-Public Examinations (PPEs) – Summer Term 2018 Year 10 students will have two weeks before their PPEs at the beginning of the Summer term. Their teachers will have shared key information about these examinations such as the number of PPEs per subject, length of each PPEs, revision list of topics, type of assessment within the paper (multiple choice questions, short answers, essay, etc.) and any relevant websites or revision books to support their home study. To support your child in their preparation for these PPEs, they will need to create a study timetable and produce effective revision materials. The study timetable should organise revision of subjects into short manageable chunks for each week until the examinations and their revision materials should help your child to become familiar again with the subject knowledge. The revision materials can take many different formats such as flashcards, mind-maps, post-it notes around the house (key facts, formulae, quotes and examples), practice questions and papers for timing under exam conditions. The Year 10 PPEs will start on Monday 30th April until Friday 11th May and students are expected to attend school as normal. Students will be provided with a detailed exam and revision timetable as well as information about extra revision sessions provided by subject areas. Curriculum leaders and subject teachers will inform students of these arrangements. Students are reminded they are responsible for bringing the appropriate equipment to each PPE, which should include two black pens, pencil, ruler, eraser, protractor, compasses, highlighters and, where permitted, calculator. The exam regulations insist on any water bottles that are brought into the exam room are clear with the label removed. Students are not permitted to borrow equipment from another candidate once inside the exam room. The school is not required to provide exam equipment and may not be able to do so on the day. Students must be dressed in full school uniform with lanyards and no trainers and if your child is going to be late or absent, you must telephone the school as soon as possible. An assembly will focus on their preparation for these important examinations. Ms Hagel, KS4 Achievement Co-ordinator Year 9 Options Process - Key Dates Wednesday 28th March – GCSE Options Taster Day Students will be given the opportunity to take part in GCSE taster sessions which will allow them to sample the subject content and skills that will covered in different subjects during key stage 4. These lessons will showcase the increased rigour and challenge that students will experience during their GCSE courses and support them in making informed and appropriate GCSE choices. Wednesday 25th April – Year 9 Parents Evening – 4:30pm - 7:30pm If you have any further queries regarding Options, there will be another opportunity to ask questions during parents evening. As well as checking your child’s progress, if your child is considering choosing that subject as one of their options, you will be able to ask the teachers for subject-specific guidance and advice. Friday 27th April – deadline for return of Options form These forms must only be returned to your child’s tutor. Once returned, tutors will check the forms to confirm your child has completed them correctly. We will then begin the process of creating the option blocks and timetabling the subjects to ensure as many students as possible get their first choice of courses. If this is not possible, we will meet with any student whose choices we are unable to accommodate and help them decide on suitable alternatives. Mr Hardy, Head of Year 9
