Food waste back to soilEUNICE VISAGIE

STELLENBOSCH UNIVER-SITY (SU) recycles216 000 kg of food waste a

year.The university has been recy-

cling all of its food waste for thelast two years by using blue plas-tic drums and Bokashi probiotic.

This food waste recycling pro-gramme is a first for a South Afri-can university. It was started atthe Lydia residence as an entryin green project competition. TheSU recycles 18 000 kg of foodwaste a month, using Bokashiand composting it at its Welge-vonden experimental farm.

The programme was fully im-plementedwithasmall capital in-vestment in 200 blue plasticdrums. Bokashi ferments all foodwaste.

Food waste comprises as muchas 30% of non-recycled waste, butmost commercial kitchens andhouseholds (even those thatdo re-cycle) donot recycle foodwaste asthey are unaware of the technolo-gy available.

Householdscan, however, recy-cle food waste with a simple buck-et system and Bokashi. All foodwaste, raw and cooked, meat, dairy and bones can be recycled

by dumping it in the bucket andtreating it with Bokashi by sprin-kling a layer on top of the waste.

After two weeks you can add itto your existing process of com-post or dig it straight into theground as super soil.

The All Seasons Indoor Com-poster kit costs R385.

) The Stellenbosch Municipal-ity refuse teams will distribute aflyer on Monday 14 November. With this flyer you get R85 dis-countonthecomposterkit,whichisavailableat theBoordSpar. For

The less air that comes incontact with the compost, thebetter.) Always close the lid tightly.) When the All Seasons IndoorComposter is full, you can burythe compost directly in the soil.) When adding the fermentedwaste to the soil, always mixdirt and wait two weeks.) DO NOT add water or placethe bucket in the sun.) Appearances of a whitegrowth on the surface of thewaste, as well as the presenceof a sweet and sour pickle-likesmell, are good indicators thatfermentation is in progress.) The first of its kind - a simple ride around town, on our streets, for the whole family, essentially just promoting mobility and shared space!

The event on Sunday 12 December 2010 will be in the form of a free-to-ride non-compet-itive cycling ride around Stellenbosch. It aims to:- reflect all communities and stimulate social cohesion;- mobilize the larger community in terms of health and well-being;- and further market and communicate the Non-Motorised Transport (NMT) goals and plans of Stellenbosch.

RideLife is proud to have the Stellenbosch Municipality as a partner of the event, who see it as the beginning of a greater vision in creating a cycling friendly and active town.

For further information about participating in the event or becoming a donor or contributor, please contact [email protected] or 083 256 5466. Keep updated with the event at www.ridelife.co.za, join the facebook and twit-ter presences. What is complicated to understand, is that one can hop on at any point, take any street, any loop, and at any time.

This is what makes this event different from any other – no start, no finish, and no control, except for safety ’s sake.

The event, through the kind support of the University of Stellenbosch, its cycling club, and the Municipality, will make volunteer marshalls available, who will look after people’s safety and comfort. These marshalls will all wear loud T shirts sponsored by the kind benefactors and partners to the event.

Remember, it is a ride, not a race, and you can do anything you want on the day as long as you keep left, follow the rules, obey the marshalls and traffic officers, remember to thanks them, and support the community by coming into Dorp Street at the end of your ride and support the local businesses.

The event wants to encourage everyone to participate while promoting safer cycling. The recent completion of an NMT (non-motorised) route along Suidwal encourages everyone to leave their engines and use a bicycle, skateboard or their two feet.

The event will be a celebration of safe and sustainable transport, in the Greater Stellenbosch, and citizens are encouraged to ride towards the river from wherever they are, then cruise along the banks of the river, with a stopover around 11:00 at the corner of Noordwal-Wes and Die Laan, where the Municipality will hand out snacks and bicycle bells to younger riders.

Safe cycling tips from the PPA website at www.pedalpower.org.za include:•Obey the traffic rules•Always stop at red traffic lights, and stop streets•Ride in single file, unless you are overtaking•Indicate your intentions (to turn or stop) by using the appropriate hand

signals, and check to see that drivers of vehicles have noticed what you intend doing

This followed the news that56 000 fines were still out-standing, excluding R21 mil-lion outstanding speed andred light violations.

Unfortunately a seriousmath error slipped into lastweek’s edition, which statedthat the fines totalled R120million. Eikestadnuus apolo-gises for the one nought toomany, as reported by the traf-fic department, but R24,9 mil-lion still translates into a lotof outstanding fines!

Dié vergadering, gehou in dieStellenzicht Senior SekondêreSkool, is deur net sowat 20 inwo-ners bygewoon.

Volgens me. Johanna Williams

Wanneer gaan hulle eendag metbehuising in Meerlust begin?

Bus service gets a pushMARLI VAN WYNGAARD

AFTER years of Hel-derberg residentscampaigning for a

bus service to and from Stel-lenbosch, the Golden ArrowBus Services (Gabs) havenow stepped up with a possi-ble solution.

“We plan to submit a pro-posal to the provincial gov-ernment before the end of theweek authorising a trial busservice between the Helder-berg and Stellenbosch,” saidFrancois Meyer of Gabs onTuesday.

Gabswillaskpermissiontohave two busesleaving fromthe Helderbergin the morningand two depart-ing from Stel-lenbosch in theafternoon.

They wish tostartinJanuaryat the beginning of the firstschool term.

If permission is grantedthey will then offer this serv-ice for a trial period to deter-mine demand and viability.

The proposal is, however,

still in its planning phasesand various logistical chal-lenges need to be investigat-ed.

Negotiations with the rele-vant localmunicipalitieswillalso have to follow.

Gabs are open to sugges-tions from the public.

“People are welcome tosubmit suggestions for thespecific routes the buseswould follow, where they canstop and what times the high-est demand for these buseswill be,” said Meyer.

Gabs is subsidised by theWestern Cape government toprovideatransportservice to

the public onvarious routeswithin theprovince.

However, theHelderberg hasalways been ex-cluded fromthis subsidydue to a lack of

funds.DistrictMail has regularly

reported on the demand forsuch a service in this region.

Its readers have joined inthe debate on public trans-port between the Helderberg

and Stellenbosch.Withthousandsofstudents

and an increasing number ofprofessionals commutingdaily between the two areasthe demand for a bus servicehas grown drastically.

“We hope to have a finalplan and answers by the endof November,” Meyer said.

“This is excellent news,”said Peter Ford, the chair-man of the Helderberg Resi-dents’ Action Association(HRAA).

“Through their support, lo-cal residentswill have theop-portunity to justify and sus-tain the much-needed andconvenient service that theyhave demanded for a longtime.

“Among its many benefitswill be reduced travellingcosts and stress for harassedmotorists, alleviation of roadcongestion and reduced car-bon emissions,” said Ford.

“It also vindicates the ef-forts of those who have cam-paignedvigorouslyforpublictransport for so long.

“Everybody stands to gain.We congratulate Golden Ar-rowandwishthemsuccess intheir trial period.”

Satellite nearing end of lifespanSAMANTHA VAN DEN BERG

SUMBANDILASAT, South Afri-ca’s second micro-satellite, seemstobenearing the endof its lifespan.

This satellite, launched on 17September 2009, is a product of thelocal satellite company, SunSpace,a spin-off company of StellenboschUniversity.

According to Mr Ron Olivier, di-rector for business de-velopment at Sun-Space, they have hadintermittent commu-nication with Sum-bandilaSat untilabout two weeks ago.

“The batteries havebeen discharged andwe failed to make con-tact. We are not cer-tain whether we willmake contact again, but we are hoping for the best.”

The satellite, however, has beenthe target of some scathing com-ments by DA Shadow Minister forScience and Technology, MarianShinn. Eikestadnuus reported lastyear on how Shinn called it a “fly-ing turkey”, asking the govern-ment to stop funding it.

In a recent statement she said:“SumbandilaSat has so far cost thepublic purse R100 million”.

She was commenting on the

problems the satellite was experi-encing after it had been damagedin a solar storm early in June.

“I have submitted parliamenta-ry questions to Science and Tech-nology Minister Naledi Pandorasking for an explanation of thefailure, steps taken to rectify it anddetails of the impact on delivery ofSumbandilaSat’s images to end us-ers,” her statement reads.

Dr Kelvin Kemm,a nuclear physicistfrom Washington, defended the satel-lite in a recent arti-cle in EngineeringNews. He said thatthe SumbandilaSatteam deserves a paton the back. “Theyhave built two satel-lites in an universi-ty environment, us-

ing many graduate students as thelabour force. In world terms, thisis a significant achievement.”

Despite criticism, the satellitehas produced 1 900 useful images,as well as nine new black traineeengineers (four females), 18 Mas-ters and twoPh.D. engineering stu-dents and experience for 78 otherengineers. “I am confident that theprogram objectives have been met,and in many cases exceeded,” saysOlivier.

Athol Fugard is proudly South AfricanSAMANTHA VAN DEN BERG

“I describe myself as a South Afri-can bastard - half English, halfAfrikaans. I’m a writer and a

manof the theatre. But finally I’maSouthAfrican. The proudest thing of them all.”

This is how the renowned playwright,Athol Fugard, described himself at a talkhe gave to students from StellenboschUniversity in theNeelsieCinema lastFri-day.

Fugard, who now resides in America,is widely known as the author of thenovel, Tsotsi, which was adapted into anOscar-winning film.

As a fellow of the Stellenbosch Institutefor Advanced Study (STIAS) he has beenstaying in Stellenbosch for the past fewmonths. The Student RepresentativeCouncil and Listen, Live and Learn invit-ed him to tell students more about his life

and interests.Fugard, however, shied away from giv-

ing a prepared talk and turned it into aquestion-and-answer session.

He revealed that he is busy writing hisfirst Afrikaans play during his stay atSTIAS.

When asked why he chose theatre asmedium he said that theatre chose him.He said that the best theatre works arewhen you don’t know you’re getting amessage at all.

“It’s when not just your head, but yourheart gets affected. Theatre is there to dotwo things: to excitemyheadand toaffectmy heart.”

When he is writing, he leaves behindevery negative feeling the human heartis capable of. “What I take to the table islove. It’s the only energy I use.”

His Afrikaans mother had to supportthehousehold, becausehis fatherwasdis-abled and an alcoholic. Fugard, being ayoungboy, neededaman to lookup to andSam was that man. “He was everythingI wanted my father to be.”

Ek hetmy kliënt sien arriveer en haas-tig my motor verlaat vir ons af-spraak by die koffiewinkel.

Ek: “Ja, my trouring”Michael: “Hoe lyk die ring, me-

vrou?”In daardie stadium het ek my

Whether you’re running a business in a rural or non-rural area of the Western Cape, you’re just the person who should be reading this… We know how difficult it has become to build a successful enterprise in many parts of the platteland – or even in townships not all that far from our bigger cities or towns. We know that you will appreciate all the help that you can get from provincial government. That is why we think you will support the thinking behind – and the implementation of – our Local Economic Development (LED) Growth Fund.

Set up especially for you, its aim is to provide opportunities for growth-oriented enterprises like yours – in rural and non-rural areas of our province. Accessing the fund could not be easier. All that is required is for you to buy into the idea that co-operation among enterprises can open up a range of exciting possibilities - even if yours is one of the smallest businesses in your town. The formation of a business ‘group’ - comprising at least two separately owned businesses - in your area could put you on a pathway to success that you might never have previously thought possible.

Once you’ve formed your group, go to the LED representative at your municipality or contact us and request an application form for the LED Growth Fund. Officials there will give you all the information you need to complete the form correctly. The idea is that provincial government assistance will increase the productivity and competitiveness of your business (and of others) – and that this, in turn, will promote growth and create more jobs. The fund is geared towards lending a hand in areas like productivity improvement, research and development, training, property rights, market studies and market access needs, and innovative ideas and proposals.

But remember, though: the success or otherwise of your application will depend on four things: • The application form must be accompanied by a proposal explaining how government support will increase the productivity of your business • You will need to partner with at least one other business in this venture • For your application to stand a chance of being successful, it will need to be co-financed by yourself, and matched by government - Rand-for-Rand • The application cannot be for the establishment of a new business or entity.

What is required from you: • Collect and complete an application form • Submit it to Casidra at the following address: Attention: Leon Faro, Casidra, PO Box 660, Southern Paarl 7624, tel: 021 863-5000 • Be available during the assessment process for an on-site interview with the assessors • Make available any additional information that may be absent from the application form, or be required in addition to the information on the application form.

‘Skitterende middelpunt in SA opvoeding’MARTIE RETIEF MEIRING

Foto’s: Abrie Burger

JAN MARAIS ONS “WELDOENER”

Dís wie hierdie Jan Marais was.

CIA Awards for two local buildings

TWO buildings in Stellenbosch each recentlyreceived an award in the prestigious Cape In-stitute for Architecture (CIA) Awards for Ar-

chitecture 2011.The 101 Dorp Gallery and Studio by Slee & Co Ar-

chitects received the CIA Award for Architecture, whilst the iKhaya Trust Centre in Kayamandi wasawarded the CIA Merit Award.

The 101 Dorp Gallery and Studio was honouredfor the way in which the architect succeeded in com-bining the practice and the art of architecture. Thedesignof thebuildingwasmainlydrivenby theneedto conserve the historical significance of the site.

According to Slee & Co Architects the buildingdoes this by assuming a modest position in the his-torical Dorp Street scape. “The new double storyfaçade is half hidden behind an ancient oak tree andits timeless aesthetics allows it to blend with the his-torical buildings oneither side andacross the road.”

According to the CIA’s 2011 Award brochure, “thebuilding’s ability to share space and encourage pub-

lic access is a welcome change to the often grandand self-conscious front-of-house, so often projectedinarchitects’workplaces. In thecaseof101DorpGal-leryandStudio,where ‘givingback’ to thestreethap-pens in a modest but generous manner, and scaleand context are respected, the architects are to becongratulated”.

The iKhaya Trust Centre belongs to the GreaterStellenbosch Development Trust (GSDT) fromwhere educational programmes for children andcommunity upliftment programmes are run. It wasdeveloped in 2002 and significantly extended andrenovatedin2010with funding fromtheRestisFami-ly Trust, the NTLF and various other donors. Therenovation project was initiated by Hannes van Zyland thearchitectwasJanKlinglerofKr2Architects.

MhloboJadezweni, chairpersonof theGSDT,wel-comed theawardas recognitionnotonly for excitingarchitecture in Kayamandi, but also as recognitionfor the efforts to help children from Kayamandi todevelop their potential.
