Kilimandjaro oorwinSAMANTHA VAN DEN BERG

ste berg in Afrika!

Dit het gelyk soos daardie groot oranjesonsopkoms in The Lion King.

AFTER local crime statis-tics for 2010 and 2011 werereleased two weeks ago,

private security companies havebeenhavingtheirsayonthecrimesituation in town.

Lee Lemmer, ABC Security, said that in many instances Stel-lenbosch reflects the highest fig-ures in different categories ofcrime and that this needs to be re-viewed. “Crimes committed byhabitual criminals are an area ofgreat concern – in both a rape andamurdercase lastyear theallegedattackers had previous convic-tions and/or had been released onbail. This situation desperatelyneeds to be addressed by the Jus-tice Department.”

She adds that there are solu-tions to the crime problem, butthat the solutions need to be sus-tainable. “Neighbourhood watch-es have proven very successful inmany areas. People can no longersit back and wait for somebodyelse to sort things out – go out andget involved!

“Always be aware of what ishappening around you and get toknow the four neighbours aroundyou.” ABC, already involved inthe Dalsig Brandwacht Neigh-bourhood Watch, is willing to runawareness campaigns to encour-age residents to be more vigilant, and to assist in setting up neigh-bourhood watches and patrols.

Retired General Glenn School-ing, CEO of Stellenbosch Watch, said the crime report is one of theworst he has ever seen. “Is thisdue to a lackof policing, dedica-tion, leadership and detection, alack of cooperation between agen-cies and neighbourhood watchesor the lackofexchangeof informa-tion to all roleplayers that couldprevent crime?”

He and other security officers,acknowledgetheroleprivatecom-panies play in the fight againstcrime. “We support the neigh-bourhoodwatchesaswell as ruralsafety through our radio projectto increase communication.

“Information regarding suspi-ciousvehicles, persons, identifiedcriminals and modus operandi

has tobecommunicatedasspeedi-ly as possible to security compa-nies, like Stellenbosch Watch, toinform their clients. Better co-operation and communication isvery important in addressingcrime.”

Rob Dale, Regional ManagingDirectorofADTSecurityWesternCape, said that they have beensuccessfully working with Stel-lenbosch Watch for more than 10years.“Wehavemaintainedapos-itive involvement with the com-munity through our associationwith the local SAPS, the Stellen-bosch CPF and a number of neigh-bourhoodwatchmovements.Thishas led to a high degree of visibili-ty, saved lives and ensured thatpeople can feel more secure andless vulnerable to crime.”

Gerhard Claassen from CSSTactical said the only effective so-lution is to act proactively. “Thiscan only be done through dedicat-ed patrols and effective monitor-ing of cameras in the areas.Through managing these meas-ures well, crime will be reduceddrastically.”

Baie Stellenbossers se anker-pale is uitgetrek enherinneringevandieverledehetbittergeword.

Elkeensal persoonlik moet uitreik enuitnooi, want elke storie kort ’nluisteraar.

Dr. P. Claassen, Rowan-straat, Stellenbosch, skryf:

Plastiek en karton is egter so

Progress ‘very disappointing’SAMANTHA VAN DEN BERG

AN increase in abortion ratesamong young girls and a lack ofablution facilities at a primary

school. These were just two of the many issues

identified by the Western Cape delegatesof the National Council of Provinces(NCOP) during an oversight visit to Stel-lenbosch last week.

The delegation visited sites in the areain 2007 as part of the Taking Parliamentto thePeopleprogrammeandtheir follow-up last week was to check if any progresswas made in the last four years.

Their visit included the KayamandiClinic, Stellenbosch Hospital, NondzamePrimary School in Pniel and KlapmutsPrimary School.

At the Kayamandi Clinic it was foundthat with 8 000 patients being treatedthere each month, the clinic was inade-quate for serving the area.

The Stellenbosch Hospital showed anincrease in abortion cases among 14- to24-year-olds,particularlyafter theEaster,June and December holidays.

At the Nondzame Primary School therewere no ablution facilities for pupils.

At the Klapmuts Primary School it wasfound that alcohol abuse and teenagepregnancy in the area have affected pu-pils and a lack of other learning facilities, such as a science lab, was identified.

MrFreddieAdams,anANCMPandoneof the delegates, told Eikestadnuus thisweek that the progress made at each ofthese places was “very disappointing”.

He says they expected to see dramaticchanges at the Kayamandi Clinic, butrather foundthestaff stillworkinginverypoor conditions. “If it weren’t for outsidefunding, the clinic would have fallen topieces long ago. The provincial govern-ment really dropped us here.”

Adams contributes the improvementsat the Klapmuts Primary School to thededication of the academic staff, but feelsthat more attention should be given to thevarious social issues in the area.

Regarding tension caused by a recentproposal to integrate the Nondzame Pri-mary School with Pniel Primary, Adamssays they would like to see more integra-tion since the delegates, as part of the na-tional parliament, support a non-racialSouth Africa.

Adams says they are currently compil-ing a report on their visits. “We will also

appeal to the national government to as-sist the provincial government in resolv-ing these issues.Fouryearsare fouryearstoo long. We have fulfilled our oversightrole, now they must do their part.”

According to Ms Jo-Anne Otto, spokes-person for the Western Cape Departmentof Health, the department is fully awareof the challenges at both the KayamandiClinic and the Stellenbosch Hospital.

She says that the high abortion rate is

not unique to the area, but that they haveimplemented several intervention pro-grammes, such as active campaigning forfamily planning methods and the market-ing of emergency contraceptives.

MrPaddyAttwell, spokesperson for theprovincial Department of Education, wastravelling at the time of going to print andwasn’t able to provide feedback on the sit-uation at the Nondzame and KlapmutsPrimary Schools.

Kamfers gestroopSAMANTHA VAN DEN BERG

Rapporteer stropery by0218088890 (MunisipaleWetstoe-passing), 021 808 8160 (Munisipa-leOmgewingskantoor) en0218082330/2333 (USBD).

BOOMBAS-STROPERS SLAAN TOEMining rights opposed

ELBÉ VAN HEERDEN

A LOCAL family says they re-ceivedoverwhelmingsupportwhen they used social mediain a bid to counter an applica-tion for sand mining rights ontheir farm.

Through the use of socialnetworking the Winshaws ofthe Winshaw Family Trustencouraged people to registeras Interested and AffectedParties (I&APs) before theclosing date on 12 September.

According to Pierre Win-shaw the support from thecommunity was overwhelm-ing. Thousands of people ex-pressed their support on so-cial networks while the Win-shaws are expecting around1 000 registered I&APs.

The application is for pro-posed sand mining rights onFarm 640, Penhill, the Win-shaws’ farm Klein Welmoed

next to Meerlust.According to the applica-

tion by Braaf EnvironmentalPractitioners, the proposedmine will encompass about 44hectares of the farm.

In the meantime Winshawsays he has experienced diffi-culty in contacting OliviaBraafofBraafEnvironmentalPractitioners. When Eike-stadnuus spoke to Braaf onWednesday morning, enquir-ing about an email sent to heron Tuesday, she said that shecould not promise feedback.

“At the moment we are col-lating all the correspondenceand we will respond to all ofthe questions as part of the of-ficial process. I can’t promisethat I will be able to respondto your questions in time, butthey will be captured as partof the process.” No feedbackwas received at the time of go-ing to print.

students of outstanding qualities over a period of 75 years.Situated in a picturesque and relatively safe part of

Idas Valley.

Next year we will start with Xhosa in the intermediate phase. We offer all the subjects and wide variety of sport

codes, cultural activities.

We practice non-racialism. We believe that the state must provide free and compulsory education.

In the absence of this we are forced to charge school fees but we do not exploit parents by charging exorbitant

school fees.

Our school fee is currently R1 150,00 per annum, but there will in all likelihood be a fee increase in 2012.

Enrolment for Grade R and Grade 1 English & Afrikaans is open, but please remember there is limited space in the

English classes.

Leon Hartshorne, president ofSASMT nationally and in Tyger-berg, expects a higher standardthan in the past and more ma-ture performances because ofthe new, older age restriction.

US’s Dr Fish a finalistEUNICE VISAGIE

STELLENBOSCH University’s Dr ThereseFish is one of 15 finalists for the national Bossof the Year Award.

Dr Fish is Deputy Dean: Community Service andInteraction at the Facultyof Health Sciences, US.

A key objective of theBoss of the Year Award isto pay tribute to leaders inthe workplace who havethe courage and foresightto identify and maintaindirection and focus inguiding companies, de-partments and staff; notonly to achieve businesssuccess, butalsotodevelopand grow people andteams.

“It is a humbling experi-ence as one is not in a man-agerialposition tobepopu-lar; therefore when ayoung employee identifiesqualities inuswhichweof-ten take for granted, it isa great honour.

“It has made me step back from the frenetic paceof my job and reflect on the role that I play in thelives of my staff,” says Dr Fish.

“It is easy to describe one’s style in terms of thepopular MBA terminology of good leader styles, however, I had found after many years in manageri-al positions that my style reflects my personality.

“I am driven to excellence, assertive and ener-getic. I use this to drive how I lead and manage –I have a flexible style which adjusts to the task athand and the people I need to lead. Sometimes one

has to hold a hand, at other times I have to give theself-initiators thegaptoachieve theirandtheorgan-isation’sgoals. I seemyself asa facilitatorwhohelpsstaff achieve their full potential.”

A big challenge in South Africa is to identify goodleaders. “The workplace is becoming more compli-

cated as the stressors of ourstaff’s personal lives influ-ence their performance.Finding the balance be-tween accommodatingthese influences whileachieving theorganisation-al goals require managersto develop the intelligenceto adjust to the situation athand,” Dr Fish commentson good leadership.

She is realistic and hon-est about the effect winningthis award will have on herlife. “If I were a teenager inthe 1970s I would answer‘don’t be simple; of courseit will’. To be seriousthough, it will definitelychange my life – the expo-sure that the award gives

one is invaluable.“Itwillgivemetheopportunitytosharemyenthu-

siasm about the roles that we as leaders play in thelives of so many people with others.

“I have a personal commitment to using my skillsin South Africa for South Africa – it will affirm thesuccess that I have achieved – I am successful Be-cause Others Support our System (BOSS),” she con-cludes.

The new titlebearer will be announced on Nation-al Bosses Day, which will this year be celebratedon Friday, 14 October.

BOSS OF THE YEAR

LÜCKHOFF-SOKKERSPAN

AS predicted, the second roundof matches in the Rugby WorldCup truly gave us an indicationof the teams’ capabilities. Itchanged the entire shape of thetournament.

Many tend to believe that Ire-land beating Australia and Can-ada beating Tonga were big sur-prises, but I have to disagree.

Australia has a young, excit-ing and inexperienced team, while the Irish pitched up withtheir most experienced squad ofall time.Their inspirational cap-tain, Brian O’Driscoll, hasplayed 122 Test matches, almostmore than the entire Australianbackline put together.

The Canadians, on the otherhand, with their strong Frenchinfluence, have beaten Ireland,England and Argentina sincethe last World Cup, while Tongahas not even played againstthese teams.

Ireland’s positive result nowthrows heavyweights New Zea-land,AustraliaandSouthAfricaon the one side of the draw whileIreland, France and England areon the other side.

That is, of course, if the All

Blacks beat France on Saturday.Speaking to a few expats in

New Zealand this week, I couldconfirmthatnotall the localsareconvincedyet that theAllBlacksare good enough to win theWorld Cup.

They are extremely nervousabout facing France.

TheTricolourshavebeenabo-gey team for the All Blacks overthe years and Richie McCawcould be losing some sleep thisweek.

Australia isnowmost likely tomeetSouthAfrica in thequarter

final, a fixture with which theBoks might be happier thantheir opponents.

Springbok coach Peter de Vil-lierscouldhaveaselectionhead-ache, though, with many of hisso-called second choice players, like Danie Rossouw, BismarckduPlessis, PatLambieandFran-coisHougaard,playingexcellentrugby at present.

Yet another North vs SouthWorld Cup final is now on thecards as no major upsets are ex-pected for the third round ofmatches.

So, how much has the gapshrunk between the bigger rug-by playing nations and the rest?

In 1995 the All Blacks beat Ja-pan145-17.Sixteenyears laterweseea83-7 result.Theonlyrealdif-ference is that Japan now haveseven New Zealanders in itssquad.

Namibia seems to have im-proved a bit with many of itsplayers playing in South Africaand England, while playing inthe Six Nations has given Italysome confidence. Russia replac-ing Uruguay in the World Cup ismerely filling the numbers.

Surprises actually expected Mountain biking’sGspot in S’BoschTHE mountains and farmsaround Stellenbosch are likea treasure chest filled withjewels for the mountain bik-ing community.

One of these gem-stones isthe G-spot – a biking spot inthe mountains between Coet-zenburg and Eden.

Local Stellenbosch moun-tain biking icon Hanlie Booy-ens loves this hand-maderoute with its epic singletrack riding.

“It is hardwork to get to thetop, but you get your rewardon the way down with theadrenaline injection,” saidBooyens.

“It is fun in capital letters.Better than any rollercoasterride you will ever have!”

The G-spot was obviouslybuilt with Downhill racing inmind.

Every jump has a “chickenrun”, though, so if you don’t

have the courage to take thejump, you can ride around it,said another local mountainbiker, CM Muller.

“It’s like going down a su-pertube. When you get to thebottom, you just want to do itagain,” he said.

The G-spot is great moun-tainbiking ingeneral, thanksto all the single track sectionsand jumps.

It’s not ideal for beginners, though, unless you ride veryslowly. But then you miss allthe fun, said Muller.

The G-spot is not all aboutadrenaline, said Booyens.

“The best of all is the 360°panoramic view that you get.

“Itreallytouchesyoursoul, especially when the sun goesdownbehindTableMountainin the distance and the Stel-lenbosch Mountains areglowing red.” – EuniceVisagie
