District C Has Talent At the Spring Convention in March then-2nd Vice District Governor

(VDG) Jan Weatherly produced the “District C’s Got Talent (or not)”

gala. It was a great entertainment showcase of Lions having fun. But our District really does

have talent in a variety of fields. And most of us are not aware of what we have. So I’d like

to point out some of the skills available to all our clubs.

Many Lions are aware of 2nd VDG Ron Smircich and his skills in training. But John Bergvall

of the Olympia Host Lions was a professional facilitator and organizational manager. John

Kirry is a pilot. And Pat Bucknell of the Lacey Sunrise club knows how and with whom to

organize a construction project. Mike Gordon of the Mineral Lake Lions is a fire chief and

has experience in disaster management. Also from the Olympia Host club is Art Weatherly,

paralegal and law office manager. Balarie McLeod of the Lakewood Knights club is a school

teacher and principal. Tony Gunn from the Olympia Capitol club (fondly referred to as “Oly

Cap”) is a webmaster. Also within the IT professional group is Dave Risley from the Poulsbo

Evening Pride club. Dick Taute of the Port Orchard Lions is an insurance professional.

Yolanda Trout of the Auburn Lions is on the Auburn City Council.

My point is that we have a wealth of proficiency and aptitude within our membership. The

new club roster includes this information on many of our members. So if you have a

question, whether club related or personal, don’t hesitate to reach out.

We can improve service to our community by improving our club and ourselves.

Join the Centennial Service Challenge Just around the corner we celebrate our 100th birthday as the largest service organization in

the world. We achieved this recognition by setting lofty goals without fear of failure and with

the knowledge we learn from all our actions, those we believe to be successful and those

steeped with learning.

Has your club set action goals for this year that engage your members? Lions all over the world are kicking it

into high gear to help us reach our Centennial Service Challenge with the goal of benefitting 100 million people:

http://members.lionsclubs.org/EN/serve/centennial-service-challenge/index.php Explore the 4 areas service:

Engaging our youth, Sharing the Vision, Relieving the Hunger, and Protecting the Environment. Your club will

be eligible to receive special Centennial recognition when you host a qualifying service project. Check it out!

Vice District Governor Ron Smircich

The Changing Face of Lions-Challenging the Future

Those of you who have been Lions for a while probably noticed some subtle changes which

have crept upon us. For example, we have gradually shifted from wearing vests to wearing

polo or other collared shirts with an embroidered club logo. Those of you who have been

club officers have seen a shift from a multitude of paper forms manually completed and

mailed, to on-line reporting. You may also have noticed that the Lions logo and color have changed slightly.

Lions Clubs International is gradually implementing changes to meet the challenges of the future. New

members come from new generations. These new generations think or behave slightly different than the

generation before them. One of the programs Lions Clubs International has developed to meet the challenges

of generational changes is titled “Your Club, Your Way”.

The “Your Club, Your Way” program suggests that you evaluate the complete structure of your club meetings.

This includes the dates, times and locations of the meetings, the club program and agenda, your existing

protocol, dress code and traditions, and even the use of the word “meeting” itself.

Lions are encouraged to visit the LCI website at, members.lionclubs.org, to view the “Your Club Your Way”

program. This can be found at Member Resources. The brochure can be downloaded and includes a member

survey. Ask yourself, “Would our existing meeting structure satisfy new members from a younger generation,

and, if necessary, can we make changes which would not offend our current members?”

There is no mandatory requirement that clubs adopt the “Your Club, Your Way” concept. This is just one of the

many tools LCI is offering to meet future challenges. I hope that all the clubs will invite me for a visit this Lions

year to discuss the many programs LCI has made available to provide service to the clubs.

Lions Environmental Photo Contest: The Lions Environmental Photo Contest provides a way for Lions to portray, through an original photo, their pride

and commitment to improving, protecting and preserving the environment.

The deadline for submitting your entries for the Lions Environmental Photo Contest will be here before you know

it. Photos must be submitted to the district Environmental Photo Contest Chairperson no later than November 15,

2015. So, now is the time to start encouraging your members to get out and get some photos.

There has been some confusion on how many photos can be submitted. The contest rules state each club can

submit one photo. Your district governor and contest chairperson have determined that in the interest of having

the widest selection of photos and to give all members a fair chance in each category, every club can submit one

photo from each category to the District.

Entry forms and a complete description of the photo contest and rules are posted on the Member Portal of the District website. A separate entry form must accompany each photo submitted.

Another Successful Camp Leo Year For 25 years Camp Leo has served children and families experiencing diabetes, and for 25 years this has been possible largely due to the contributions of Western Washington Lions Clubs. Having just wrapped up its 25th summer and 3rd consecutive week of camp, Camp Leo has grown from 25 campers over a couple of days to over 300 campers and programs spanning from leadership weekends to high school camp and a brand new family camp just on the horizon. Camp Leo is more than a summer camp for children with special needs. It has become the highlight of those children’s summer and sometimes year.

With the majority of Camp Leo’s staff being volunteer based (most of which are former campers and people with diabetes themselves) we are able to offer support, education and critical resources to children and families in need. I for one would not be where I am today without the support of Camp Leo and my local Lions Club. I am 27 years old, have been attending Camp Leo for 16 years, an active board member for 4 of those years and I am a 6 year member of the Enumclaw Lions Club. I look forward to camp all year, every year (and I’m not the only one) in hopes of offering the same opportunity to children with diabetes that was given to me because of Camp Leo, it’s volunteers, campers and supporting Lions Clubs.
