PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE

We are proud to have our eleventh issue of

Jaycee Herald. Jaycee herald is providing a

platform for all of us to put in your creative

efforts. Request you to keep contributing so

that this small effort can become a platform

for all budding talents.

Through the month….

It was Onam celebration time yet again!! And this is the

eleventh edition of Jaycee Herald!! Yes… Time really flies..

September month started off with JCI Trichur Onam

Celebrations. Onam Celebration was organized under the able

leadership of Program Directors, Ramachandran & Sharika.

There were variety entertainment programs, including Skit,

Onnapattukal, Onam quiz, Arm Wrestling, Flower

arrangements, Dubsmash and lots more to entertain the

members and the grand Sadya afterwards ensured that

members left the venue with their stomach and heart full.

Kudos to Ramachandran and Sharika for the wonderful

arrangements. The supporting role played by Jcrt. Chairperson

Swapna Manoj is worth mentioning here.

Luminanz- JJ & Jcrt Conference was hosted by JCI Thodupuzha,

8 members from JCI Trichur participated in the conference. We

were happy that we got four plus one – five recognitions for

our efforts from the Zone. The awards were:-

a) Outstanding Jayceerette winner – Jc. CA. Swapna Manoj

b) Outstanding Jayceerette wing – Runner Up

c) Recognition for Participation in Jayceerette week

d) Outstanding PR Programme of JJ Wing

Plus

Sarika Ramachandran and Madhav were the winner in the Mom

and Kid photo contest organized by the zone. It was a nice

feeling to be recognized for our efforts. Congratulations to all

of you who worked really hard.

Myself and Ranjith attended the award Orientation Seminar at

Aluva hosted by JCI Edappally, which reminded us that it is

time to bid for the Zone awards..

Our Prathibha Puraskar award ceremony continued during the

month and on 23rd September we gave away award in

Vivekodayam Boys Higher secondary school to Atul Krishna.

The recipient and his family were very much emotional on the

award function and really appreciated JCI Trichur for their

efforts.

Next, Prathibha Puraskar award function was at Sacred Heart

Convent Girls Higher Secondary School on September 29th. It

was a great show, with band set team guiding the award

winner Merlin Michael to the stage. This award function was

special for JCI Trichur, as our Zone President Jc. Sudhin Ashok

himself was the Chief Guest of the award ceremony. He lauded

the efforts of JCI Trichur and announced that Zone XX is going

to adopt the concept of Prathibha Puraskar and is planning to

have such award functions in all chapters across the zone. I

would like to thank PZP Jc. John Paul who brought in the

wonderful idea of Pratibha Puraskar and our IPP Jc. Jojo

Panthalookaran who took the initiative to execute such a novel

idea. The school management appreciated the effort of JCI

Trichur in providing these types of awards.

On 30th September we presented the Prathibha Puraskar award

to Miss. Krishna.P in NSS School. It was great to see a

grandmother accompanying the award winner to accept the

award.

Really appreciate all the members who participated in the

Prathibha Puraskar award functions and a special thanks to Jc.

Ranjith Kollannur who was the Programme Director for all

these three Prathibha Puraskar functions. Special thanks to Jc.

Sudhir Achuthan, who supported us to organize the event.

Jc. Ramachandran also qualified in the exam for JCI course on

Effective Leadership.. Congratulations.

I will tell you a story of my friend Monty Roberts.

As he was a kid, his father as a horse trainer was moving from stable to

stable, from ranch to ranch, training horses. Thus, the boy‘s school career

was constantly interrupted. One day, when he was a senior, teacher

asked him to write about what he wanted to be when he grew up. He did

not hesitate a minute and wrote seven-page paper about his aim to be an

owner of a horse ranch, he wrote many details and drew a location of

buildings and stables and even a detailed house plan.

Two days later he received his paper back with letter “F“on the page.

After class he came to teacher and asked: “Why did I receive an F?“. The

teacher responded: This dream is so unrealistic for a boy like you, who

has no money, no resources and who comes from a poor family. There is

no possibility that you will reach your great goals one day.“ Then the

teacher asked Monty to rewrite the paper with more realistic attitude.

The boy went home and asked his father, how he should act. The father

answered: „This decision is very important for you. So you have to make

your own mind on this“.

After several days the boy brought the same paper to his teacher. No

changes were made. He said: “Keep the F and I will keep my dream“.

Now Monty Roberts owns 4,000-square-foot house in the middle of 200-

acre horse ranch and he still has that school paper, which now is framed

over the fireplace.

Remember, you have to follow your heart and never let anyone take your

dreams away.

Dream it ! Wish it ! Do it !

Thanking you,

Yours truly

Liar’s Poker by Michael Lewis

Publisher – Random House; Year of Publication – 1989; Pages –

Many of us have heard about the subprime crisis that broke US

housing and propelled the world into an economic crisis. How US

bankers would give housing loans to low creditworthy individuals

and then sell these loans to other banks bundling them with more

creditworthy loans and how these bundles were then insured and

then reinsured and resold and again insured and so on, creating a

huge corpus of assets in banks and insurance companies across

US and Europe.

All this is well and good since all the banks and insurance

companies got their commission on the number of transactions

that happened and so long as the loans kept getting sold and

insured they were minting money. Until the people who took the

original loan stopped repaying the loans since they could not pay

it back in the first place (Hence they were low creditworthy

individuals) making entire corpus non-performing for all parties

involved. With such a huge amount taken out of the economy,

banks did not have money to lend to businesses, which needed it

to employ and pay people thereby leading to a global economic

crisis.

Of course, I have put it in very simple terms, but the actual crisis

is much more complicated than that. But what is tragic about the

subprime crisis is that it was merely a reflection of what

happened twenty years earlier when US mortgages had similarly

collapsed on the weight of banking misuse done on housing and

car loans.

Liar’s Poker is an autobiographical account of an investment

banker with Salomon Brothers, the leading investment bank in

the US in 1980s. The 1980s saw Salomon Brothers specialize in

mortgage based securities which were based on mortgage loans

given by thrift banks in US to buy cars and other personal loans.

These securities were traded with the clients of Salomon with

Salomon profiting on each transaction.

But these mortgages were given out without proper analysis and

credit checking. Many banks got into trouble for this and had to

sell their loans at steep discount. As a result, many banks

collapsed and US government had to bail them out. What we saw

in the last decade was an amplification of what happened in the

1980s with a bit more of financial “innovation”. It shows us how

history’s lessons remain unlearned.

Michael Lewis gives an excellent review of the bond trading

market of the 1980s US. He also gives a very revealing insight to

the behaviour of the investment bankers (stock brokers in local

parlance) as they lie to their clients and cheat them so that their

company can maximize their profit. His former employers had to

deal with criticism because of the revelations in the book but not

much, since it was a widely known industrial practice. So, there is

little surprise when twenty years later, thanks to similar

opportunism by investment bankers the world economy again had

to go through another upheaval at the cost of public money.

Liar’s Poker works well as a tell-all book about Wall Street of the

“Greed is Good” era. Lewis leaves out nothing about the

underhanded dealings of the investment banks laced with a mix

of the internal politics and sarcastic humour to come up with an

entertaining autobiography.

COMPANIES CAN NOW ACCEPT FUNDS FROM

RELATIVES OF DIRECTORS

NEW DELHI: Relaxing the norms for private companies, the government has allowed them to accept funds from relatives of the directors.

The latest move would also makes it little easier for companies to raise money for meeting their funding requirements.

Easing the Companies (Acceptance of Deposits) Rules, the Corporate Affairs Ministry has said that in case an entity receives money from relative of a director then the same should be disclosed in the board's report.

In this regard, the ministry, which is implementing the Companies Act, 2013, has issued a notification.

"... the director of the company or relative of the director of the private company, as the case may be, from whom money is received, furnishes to the company at the time of giving the

money, a declaration in writing to the effect that the amount is not being given out of funds acquired by him by borrowing or accepting loans or deposits from others and the company shall disclose the details of money so accepted in the board's report," it said.

With the latest move, the definition of 'deposit' excludes money received from a director or a relative of the director of the private company.

Besides, the definition of free reserves has been expanded by including securities premium account, according to the notification dated September 15.

"This means that all companies that are accepting deposits (based on prescribed percentage of paid-up capital and free reserves) will have the benefit of increase in their borrowing limits, and enhanced ability to accept deposits," leading consultancy PWC India said in a note.

The latest amendments are positive in nature and would go a

long way in fulfilling the funding requirements of business, it added.

In recent months, the government has made various changes to rules pertaining to the Companies Act, 2013 apart from amending certain provisions in the main law itself. These steps are aimed at making it easier for corporates to do business in the country.

“A Surprise Call” Dr.Sangeeta Sudhir ,BHMS.

It was a Monday, 2nd April 2012. School vacation had just begun

and my kids had already left for Trivandrum the day before.

Sudhir had left for office relaxingly after the hectic March. Even I

went to my clinic as usual at around 10 am.

As I was seeing my patients, I received a phone call at about 11

am. It was a regular patient who usually calls up for his regular

medicine. But that time he had called up for another purpose. He

told me that one of his friends wanted to consult me but he won’t

be able to come in person. So he asked me whether I would

agree for a telephonic consultation and dispense the medicine. I

agreed and told him that if required he may have to come in

person. Then I asked him the name of his friend so that I would

know when he called. He told me that the name of his friend was

Mohan Lal. I said “Ok” and decided to wind up the call. At that

time he interrupted me and told that it was the film star Mohan

Lal. I just couldn’t believe it and was very much surprised. I

thought he was just kidding. I thought even if he had seriously

told Mohan Lal to consult me why should he ever do that!!!

Exactly after ten minutes I received a phone call. The person said

that he was Antony – Antony Perumbavoor and whether it was

Dr. Sangeeta online. I gave an affirmative answer and then he

said that he was handing the phone over to Mohan Lal. I was

pinching myself to confirm whether it was true. And there he was,

Mr. Mohan Lal online saying a “Hello” and a “Good morning” . I

wished the same back, feeling very excited. He spoke of his

illness to me. He sounded very much the same as we hear him in

the movies. I enquired with him the details of his illness and

decided on his medicine. We spoke for ten to fifteen minutes

before winding up.

Mr. Mohan Lal was at Ernakulam in a hospital where his mother

was admitted. I felt privileged because being in the midst of

doctors in a hospital, he consulted me.

Before I could recover from the truth of Mohan Lal’s call, his staff

came to my clinic to collect the medicine in ten minutes. I gave

him the necessary medicine still being in the state of euphoria.

The whole episode got over in half an hour. I immediately called

Sudhir to share my happiness. Even he couldn’t believe it. After

that I called my parents and very close relatives. Nobody believed

it. Most of them thought that I was continuing to play an April

fool “prank “!!!

That day I was very busy with lot of phone calls pouring in to

enquire about my conversation with Mohan Lal.

Unfortunately I did not get a follow up after the treatment. But I

am happy that in my career, one of my favourite actors consulted

and took treatment from me. I would cherish these moments

forever.

Its past three years now. Mr. Mohan Lal would have forgotten me

but I would still remember how his phone call made my day

special!!!

I would like to immensely thank this magazine and Sudhir for

motivating me to write this article. If not for them I wouldn’t have

penned down this incident and nor would have expressed it.
