Photo rendition of the proposed Alumni Wall of Honor

Thanks to the efforts of John Maniec, fellow1964 classmates Joe Platt and John Ciarelli, the once dormant Hicksville High School

Alumni Association has been reactivatedwith some ambitious projects on the horizon.

Its now official. stated Maniec, in a letter to the HixNewseditors. We have reactivated the Hicksville High School

Alumni Association and through the kind donation of histime and legal expertise,John Ciarelli, Esquire is not onlyguiding us in the re-activation process but also helping usfile with the federal government our application for a501( c )3 charitable organization, under the name:Hicksville High School Alumni Foundation, Inc.

Members of the Hicksville School Board recently metwith Maniec, Platt and Ciarelli and there was a clearconsensus from all present that an active and vibrantAlumni Association is long overdue.

The first fund-raising event of the HHS Alumni Founda-tion will be a Dinner Dance Gala at the Knights ofColumbus Hall, 45 Heitz Place, on Saturday evening,November 21, 2015. A Registration Form can be foundon the following page together with a Journal Adrequest form.

Maniec also indicated that he has tentatively lined up apotential Golf Outing to take place on Friday, October16, 2015 at the Clearview Golf Course in Bayside, Queensin conjunction with the Home-Coming Weekend events

at the high school. He hopes to hear from at least 48

alumni who wish to participate in order to finalize thisadditional fund-raising event.

Both the re-vitalized Alumni Association and the newFoundation have five very ambitious projects on theiragenda:

Raise money for scholarships for deserving highschool seniors.

Create a Wall of Honor to highlight the achievement oalumni who after graduating HHS distinguishedthemselves as adults.

Set up a viable mentoring program where alumni cangive back to deserving high school students and guidthem to meaningful adult careers.

Honor alumni who went on to distinguish themselvesin various athletic careers and achievements

Create a permanent and highly visible display case tohonor all alumni who have served in the U.S. ArmedForces.

The Association hopes to raise $ 6,000 in the next year get one of their ambitious projects operational. Theleaders of the association are appealing to all HHSalumni to volunteer their time, talents and financialsupport so many of the above goals can be reached inthe next few years. They immediately need help makinthe upcoming November 21st Dinner Dance successful

A follow up to the naming of a HicksvilleRoad to Billy Joel BoulevardHi Bob,It looks like the Billy Joel street naming issue madethis past Sunday's Dallas Morning News. (See attach-ment).Here in Texas, there is no waiting for the person todie before their name in on a street name sign. In

1970, one of our major Interstate Freeways aroundDallas was named LBJ Freeway after Lyndon John-son, who was alive at the time. A more recentlycompleted toll way further north of town was alsonamed after George H. W. Bush. Right here in Grape-vine, Texas, one of our main streets is named afterour current sitting mayor, William D Tate. Shouldn't

they enjoy the prestige of the naming while they arestill alive??My wife Linda, tells me that there is a "MuhammadAli" Boulevard in her hometown of Louisville, KY.He's still with us!!Everywhere but New York. Perhaps you should startsomething, Bob.Ron Rocek 1960

Dear Bob,I was pleasantly surprised to see that you publishedmy recent comment about "peace protesters" inHixNews. Thanks for keeping an open mind andkeep up the good work!Marty Brandfon 1967

Mr. Arnold Sparrwas the directoryof audio visualfrom 1969-1981.He affected thelives of all thestudents that

Somemore than others. At least 10 of usfollowed in Arnies footsteps going into podcastingor Audio Visual engineering, included myself.Recently we had an over the years AV luncheon atthe very last minute, but 11 of us made our way. Wegot talking about how many AV staffers there were. Ihave taken upon the task to find out. I have gottenthe Yearbook page from the years 1969-1972, 1974-

1979. I have been told you

have a complete collectionof yearbooks from HHS.Could someone pleasesend me copies of the AVpage for the missing years,1973, 1980 & 1981?Marc D. Malamud

Hey Bob,I am writing this to you after just watching awonderful video about Hicksville. My father andhis family are from Hicksville and he eventuallybegan his family and moved us east to Holbrook, where I was born and raised. Fast forward 33 yearslater, I am not moving my own family to Hicksvillenext month (behind Holy Trinity). It was great tolearn all about the area and how it has trans-formed over the years! I did know some about the

area from when I visited my grandparents. Theywere both very involved in St Ignatius Churchwhich I saw you featured numerous times in yourvideo. They have both left us now for some time, but just in case you may know of them, theirnames were George and Joan Kellner. I am ram-bling now, anyway, just wanted to say that Ienjoyed your video.Ken Kellner

A note sent to John Maniec class of 1964...

I'd just like to applaud yourefforts, along with the helpofJoe Platt andJohnCiarelli, to reactivate theHicksville High SchoolAlumni Association! If thereis any way the HicksvilleVietnam Era MemorialProject Team can help you, please let me know. I hopeyou obtain your not-for-profit 501(c)3 status faster

than we did. Ours took about 10 months, includingpersistent follow-up for status with the IRS over thattime period. Remember too, you will also need toregister with NY State for their exemption, onceyou've achieved the Federal exemption. My brother,Santo, was in your class and he told me your 50thClass Reunion last Fall was a big success!Best regards,Joe Carfora 1962

There are about 30 wineries on the East End now.Sorry I didn't get to talk to Ray Blum when Lorraineand I first started going out there in 1994. We wentto Peconic Bay for tastings so we probably weretalking to him and didn't realize he's was fromHicksville. We visited five wineries and had a great time.Chris Anderson, Class of 1967

What wineries did you visit? Didn't realize there were so many out east. One of our alumni

who passed away back in 2007, Reynold Blum, had a winery with his wife, Jill. She tried

running it after Rey passed but eventually took on someone to run the operation while shetook a back seat. I've read reviews that say the New York wine is as good as any other.

    What's your favorite?

I went to most of the wineries in Napa and Sonoma Valley

outside San Francisco when I was stationed in California

from 1966-1969. This photo was taken when my buddy, who

is a retired navy master chief, Stan White and me attended

the Navy Cryptologic Reunion "Golden Gate in '88." We visited

a winery in Napa and sampled some of the good stuff then

bought a bottle. As of today (August 7, 2015) there is a

wildfire surrounding and in parts of Napa.

    Blast from the past!

Here's me when I was Lancelot in Camelot the musical. Ithink it was around 1993. This performance was at theWindsong Performing Arts Center which I owned and ranfrom 1990 through 1994. We did 38 different productionswith musicals, dramas, comedies and children's shows. It

was magical and I worked my butt off with 12-15 hour days- no kidding! I can't believe I Kept it up for 4 years! I survivedon warm Dr Peppers averaging 2 - 6 packs a day! It kept theengine going. I haven't a drink of ANY soda in the last 8years! (Maybe I had 5 or 6 cans during these last 8 yearsonly! I swear!)Now I only drink sugar free no calorie icedteas! I went cold turkey one day and just stopped drinking

any soda and I've always hated any diet sodas - Yuck! . I willhave my cup of Earl Gray Tea in the morning and anotherone at night everyday. One for breakfast and one beforebed! I've been in almost 200 different theatrical productionsin 50 years! Whew! And even though I miss it from time totime, I don't miss memorizing lines!!!!!!!! I retired in 2005when I was Buffalo Bill in ANNIE GET YOUR GUN! What a life!I'll always have my memories! Now I enjoy a quieter life andbeing with family! I'll post more old theatre photos as I findthem!Jeff White

    Hicksville T-Shirts Anyone?

Hey there Hicksvillians! I am thinking I will get started onthis year's tee shirt offering a little early. I have attachedphotos of the two styles from last year and will be posting ablack on orange version in a couple of days.I have found the best way to make sure everyone who isinterested gets on the list, is for individuals to send me aprivate message indicating if " interested?" I will answeryou with the details about price and sizes etc. Once againwe will be trying to raise money for the Terry Farrell FireFighter's Fund. Last year was a huge success for those whoaren't aware. I think I will also use a small percentage ofdonations to help a family in my "neighborhood" a young

Menonite Family who just lost their home after a lightningstrike burned it to the ground this past Saturday evening. This is a young couple still in their twenties who have 4young children and one on the way. My wife and I have

already begun a campaign (locally)for clothing, food and householdgoods etc. I am thinking if we canalso raise a couple hundred buckswith tee shirt sales we can showthese nice young people thatpeople from Hicksville care. So ifyou think you want a tee shirt or

two (they do make great Christmasgifts) let me know and I will startmaking my list.Walter Relling

Thanks for sending along to me. I've asked Roger, our

webmaster, to add Bill to the In Memoriam for your class.

Bill was such a nice guy whom I remember from high

school even though I was a class ahead of him. I guess

sports had a lot to do with our association. It seemed like

all the jocks knew all the jocks. It 's like Mickey whom I

knew very well mainly because of sports. I love this picture

of some snow in the early days of Hicksville. Who is in the

picture with Mick? Hope you are well. Send my

best to your brother, Rod Clements and

Carol Neglia. Tell Rod that Speedy says "HI" and tell

him that I need a walker now to get around. My legs are

shot. Ask him if he remembers the meet at Great Neck

South. That was when I ran a 9.9 hundred but only got

credit for 10 flat. The guy we were running against fromGreat Neck was Roger Seaman.

One year ago today (July 15, 2015), I lost my baby

brother, Warren. My heart still aches but what gets me

through are the treasured memories I have of us all

growing up and the years since. The thought of things

he would do back then still make me laugh and helps

get through the tears. I know youre with Mommy andDaddy. RIPalways in my heart. Love you My Potsie.
