WITH theconstructionof theMsunduziTourism hub nearing its completion,an amount of R2.4 million has been

approved for the rehabilitation of the publicityhouse.

Thepublicityhousewhichnowhousesoffic-es of the Pietermaritzburg Tourismwas estab-lished in 1884, to cater for city police and firedepartments.

Department refurbish the publicity house.“The funding that will be used is unspent

funding from for the Msimang museum con-struction”.

City mayor Chris Ndlela said that it wouldnot look good to have a state of the art tourismhub, while the publicity house remains in a di-lapidated state.

Msunduzi Pietermaritzburg tourism asso-ciation director Dumisani Mhlongo said: “Weare excited about the initiative. It would havebeen an ugly island after the finalisation of ur-banrenewalprojectinfrontofthecityhall.Boththe publicity house and the tourism hub willcomplement each other, to create a city centrethat is inviting to both locals and visitors”.

Mandela movie:Long walk to freedom

“Nelson Mandela is theworld icon and giving hisrole to an international actor was a good idea. InNew York, there is NelsonMandela Road, to honourthe old man. Giving IdrisElba Madiba’s role was asmart move.”

Thokozani Ndlovu

“I strongly believe that itwas totally wrong of themto give the role to an international actor. Theyshould be encouraging theSouth African actors notinternational actors. ASouth African like LuthuliDlamini (who plays ScottNomvete in Generations)would have fitted in therole of Mandela and SoniaSedibe would have beengreat for the role of WinnieMadikizelaMandela.”

Sipho Sithole

“I don’t see anythingwrong by taking international stars to play theleading roles. Yes, we dohave good actors in thecountry like Menzi Ngubane who would been theright fit for the Mandelarole but I’m happy withtheir choice of international stars.”

Sbonelo Magwenyane

“They should have grantedthe role to a South African actor not an international star. A South African actor relates to thestory, he would haveknown about apartheidand some of the incidentsof apartheid would havebeen told to him by hiselders if he did not experience a pinch of them himself.”

NokubongaMzobe

The Mandela Long Walk to Freedom movie which is about Nelson Mandela’s life is set to be released later this month. The two leading roles are played by Londonactor and actress. Idris Elba plays Nelson Mandela and Naomie Harris plays former wife Winnie MadikizelaMandela. South African Tony Kgoroge plays Walter Sisuluand Terry Pheto plays Evelyn (Nelson Mandela’s first wife). With both leading roles given to international stars,NOMPENDULO NGUBANE took to the streets to find out what people have to say.

poet toreleasealbum>> HE wrote his first poem toescape boredom, notknowing that it would belifechanging for him.NOKULUNGA NGOBESEspoke to Willowfonteinpoet ‘Microphone’Mthembu who willnext month releasea CDalbumtitled‘Inkondloelotshweetsheni’ which is acompilation of hispoems.

Hewrites about love and Chris-tianity.

SPEAKING toEcho,Mthem-bu who is popular for his poem titled‘Kuze kube phakade’ said: “In school Iwas very good in writing essays, thenone day there was a vision to writesomething down.

“I recited my poem in front of myclass, and everyone loved it. Fromthereonwards, Iwasinvitedtoperforminfunerals,communityeventsandfami-ly functions”.

He has performed alongside the likesofMxolisiMtshali,SbodaPoet,MasojaMsi-zi and Syabonga Mpungose.

“My poems are about God and love. Godis love and there is nothing that one can dowithout getting strength from him. On theother side love is such a beautiful thing, butpeople tend to abuse it. Through my poems, Iwant to encouragepeople to love oneanother, nurture it and above all love God”, he said.

Mthembu said that the current problemsfacing young poets is exploitation.

“People take us for granted, they hire us forbig events and pay us peanuts because they

think they aredoing us a fa-

vour by exposingus to the world,” he

said.Advising other as-

piring poets, Mthem-bu said: “Be patientand do not enter intothe field because youwant stardom. Believein yourself. Find your-self a mentor but do notput your hopes on oth-ers,asyouhavethepow-er to do it on your own”.

Long cellphone chatscould be damaging

>> It could lead tothe formation ofitchy red bumpsand blisters

SPEAKING endlessly on yourcellphonecan lead toanallergicreaction, warns a leading phar-

maceutical company, specialising inallergy treatments.

In a press release, MariskaFouche, spokesperson for PharmaDynamics says thecompany’sallergyhelpline has fielded dozens of calls inrecent months from members of thepublic enquiring aboutwhether theircellphones are to blame for the itchy, red bumps and blisters along theirjaws, cheeks and ears.

“While it is often referred to as acellphoneallergy,it isactuallyanickelallergy,”remarksFouche.“Ifyoucon-sider that the average cellphone usermakes or receives an average of 22phone calls a day and checks theirphone every six and a half minutes, the prolonged exposure to nickel – ametalwhichisoftenusedincellphonebuttons, headsets and LCD screenframes – canbe the likely cause of theallergy.

“Nickel isoneof themostcommoncontact allergens. Even though therearen’t any statistics available forSouthAfrica, experts suggest that fig-ures are comparable with that of theUK, where 1 in 10 people suffer froma nickel allergy.Worldwide there hasbeen an increase in the number of

cellphone or rather nickel allergiesreported,particularlyamongteenag-ers,whocaneasily spendhalf thedayon their phones, texting, talking, checking Facebook, playing gamesand listening to music.

“Somemightonlygetasmallrash, which goes almost unnoticed, so it islikely that the increase in cellphoneallergies are much higher than is ac-tually being reported,” she says.

Usually the contactwith other ob-jects containing nickel, such as keysandcoinsarebrief, so theallergymaynot become immediately apparent.Therisk, however, is increasedbyfre-quent and prolonged contact withnickel-containing items such as cell-phones and jewellery for example.

Fouche notes that women aremore likely than men to develop theallergy, because they were possiblysensitised earlier in life when theyhad their ears pierced, which can in-troduce nickel into the bloodstream.

“When the ear is pierced, an ear-ring stud is left in the ear to keep thehole open until the skin around itheals. Since the piercing is an openwound, thenickel salts areable toen-ter the bloodstream and break downthe body’s natural resistance.

“The reason why somany peopleare susceptible to nickel allergies is

because the metal dissolves in mois-ture, forming salts. For example, when someone sweats while speak-ing on their nickel-containing-cell-phone, salts form and the skin be-comes inflamed. Nickel is a strong ir-ritantandrepeatedcontactwithitcanweaken the body’s resistance,” shesays.

He continues to say an allergic re-actiontometalscanbeahighlyirritat-ing and even painful experience.Symptoms range from redness, itch-ing, swelling, blistering, skin lesionsto eczema and sometimes oozing orscarring may also occur.

To alleviate symptoms ask yourdoctororpharmacist for themostap-propriate treatment which may in-clude an oral antihistamine or corti-sone cream. For frequent cellphoneusers suffering from a nickel allergy,Fouche suggests:

•Using a wireless ear piece•Setting your phone to speaker-

phone•Putting a phone cover and clear

film screen on the device•Switching toaphone thatdoesn’t

contain metal on surfaces that arelikely tomakecontactwithyourskin..

Salute for a gentle giant

IT’S one of the most unfortunatethings thatmanyofusneverget to re-turntoourschools,especiallythoseinthe townships, to thank those teach-ers who helped shape our thinkingand decisions.

I am reminded of this as I think ofthe two years (1979-1980) I spent atQoqisizwe High School where I didForm 1V and Form V under our dis-tinguished and dignified principalMr. Cecil Mkhize.

Mkhize recently passed away.Working under him were equally il-lustrious teachers such as Mr. Wela,Mrs Molefe, Mr. Sandile Ndlovu and

MsGumede.(IhopeIhavenot leftanyteachers out, but if I have, apologiesto them)

I know I am not exaggeratingwhen I say the influence that Mr.Mkhize had on us students was suchthatmanyofuswished tobe teachersafter matriculations. Indeedmany ofmy former classmates are educatorsas we speak.

When I thinkofQoqi (short forQo-qisizwe) and the timewe spent there,a few stories come to mind.

One day my friend Vusi Mkhize(who, incidentally, isnowateacheratMpande - now a high school) and Iwereabsent at school, (wewill notdi-vulge here the reason why since hislearnersmightget ideasandgivehima tough time) the principal called us.

Mr Mkhize listened to us with hisheadslightlyturned,ononesidewith-out interruption. Even as we told ourtale,it justsoundedsolameeventous. The whole thing was so embarrass-ing,more sobecausehedidnot shoutor cane us, whom I thought at thetime, he should have.

After listening to us, he talked to

us inhisusual calmway, occasionallylooking at us but mostly lookingdown, explainingthatwewerewrongto skip class but that we have madethe whole thing worse by lying aboutit.

Students do have this tendency totell liesandhalf truthsbutMr.Mkhizehadthis inexplicablequalityandauraabout him that made you feelashamed if you told him lies.

There and then Iwished the earthwouldopenupandswallowme.Afterhefinishedhesaidwecouldgoandwesheepishly shuffled to the class.

Another incident that manyformer Qoqi guys would remember, involved a fellow student whoclaimed that he had been disciplinedunjustly by a teacher after accusinghim of not wearing a full school uni-form.

Thesaidteachersaidthepantsthestudentwaswearingwasnotgreybutgreen, whichthestudent furiouslyre-futed. So, led by the likes of BhunuHlengwa (the late soccer player ofAmaZulu FC) and others, we assem-bled in front of the school and de-

manded that the teacher apologise.(See what the winds of 1976 Sowetouprising did?)

Mr. Mkhize did not seem ruffledwhen he came to address us. Witheveryone there at assembly, he askedthe aggrieved student (let’s call himNaughty) to come forward and standin front so everyone can see what hewaswearing. He thenaskedasecondstudent to stand next to Naughty, sothat we can compare.

Clearly, everyone could see thatNaughty waswearing a pair of greentrousers, something which humbledhimandus.Butwhatweappreciatedis that Mr. Mkhize, after making usblushso, healsoindicatedthathewasnothappywiththemanner theteach-er had handled this matter and saidhe was going to have a talk with himtoo in private.

Then he impressed on all of usgathered at the assembly spot abouteach one of us taking responsibilityfor what we do and to be prepared tostand up and be counted.

Mr.Mkhize lived inDambuza loca-tion and taught for many years at

GeorgetownHighSchoolintheGreat-erEdendaleValley, beforehegotpro-moted to principalship. Those whoworked with him said he enjoyed histeaching so much that he had to bestronglypersuadedtotakeupthepostof principal.

To us students, he was one of themost intelligent, calm and humbleprincipals and one of the most dedi-cated educators we had the privilegetohaveknown.Heinspiredmanystu-dents to enter the teaching profes-sion. Others have gone on to achievea lot in academic world as well as inboth the public and private sector.

While working as a reporter, webumped into each other along Lan-galibalele Road near the Post Officeand he asked me in his usual quietmanner:

“Are you the onewho regularly writearticles in Echo?”

I said: “Yes sir”“Keep it up,” he said“Thank you sir’Awesome! We salute a gentle giant

Today is Diabetes Day>> Prominent people including Gagasi FM presenter Kini Shandu will take part in walk diabetes walk on Sunday

>>What is diabetes?

DIABETES occurs when the level of glucose (sugar) in yourbloodis toohigh–eitherbecauseyourbodydoesn’tproduceenoughinsulinoryourbodydoesnoteffectivelyusetheinsu-lin that it does produce.

Your bodyneeds insulin to carry sugar fromyourblood-stream into your body cells where it is used for energy. Ifthereistoolittleinsulin, yourbloodsugarlevelswillcontinueto rise, as glucose is not removed from your bloodstream.

A screening (finger prick) blood test can be done at ourhospitalstogiveyouasnapshotofhowhighyourbloodsugarlevel is. A normal fasting blood glucose level is between 4-6mmol/l, while for non-fasting 4-10 mmol/l is acceptable.

Levels above these limits will require additional fastingblood glucose testing at your doctor, where levels greaterthan 7 mmol/l would be used as a diagnosis for diabetes.

There are 2 main types of diabetes – Type 1 (insulin de-pendent) and Type 2 (also known asmaturity onset or non-insulin dependent diabetes). Type1usually affects youngerpeoplewhileType2tends todevelopgradually inadultsandismuchmorecommon.Youaremorelikelytodevelopdiabe-tes if you have one or more of the following risk factors:

•being overweight or obese•physical inactivity•family history of diabetes•previous diabetes in pregnancy (gestational diabetes). It has been estimated that there are about 1.5 million

SouthAfricanswithdiabetes, buttherearemanyadultswhohavediabetes anddon’t know it, because it has not beendi-agnosed!

What are the symptoms and complications of diabetes? Some of the symptoms include: constant thirst, passing

more urine than normal, tiredness, unexplained weightloss, blurred vision or regular episodes of thrush.

These symptomsarea result ofhaving toomuchglucosein thebloodandnotenough in thecells. Inuncontrolleddia-betes, high levels of glucose over many years can damagemany different parts of the body:

•in the heart and blood vessels it aggravates atheroscle-rosis (hardeningandnarrowingofbloodvesselsby fattyde-posits) - causing coronary artery disease, stroke and blood

circulation problems in the eyes, causing reduced visionwhich may lead to blindness

•kidney disease and kidney failure•ulcers, infections, gangrene, etc in the feet•in thenerves, causing lossofsensation (especially in the

feet and legs), pins and needles, and impotence

How does diabetes affect your heart?High glucose levels in the blood affect thewalls of the ar-

teries, making themmore likely to develop atherosclerosis.Diabetes also increases the damage done by smoking, highblood pressure and high cholesterol. Type 2 diabetics oftenhave higher triglycerides (a type of fat) and lower levels ofHDL (“good”) cholesterol. People with diabetes are morelikely to have high blood pressure. Diabetes can even affectthe heart muscle itself, making it a less efficient pump. Asdiabetes canaffect thenerves to theheart, symptomsof an-ginamay not be felt in the usual way andmay be passed offas indigestion or a stomach upset. This leads to delays anddifficulties in diagnosing angina and heart attacks. As youcan see, diabetes increases the risk of stroke and heart dis-ease,especially ifotherrisk factorsarealreadypresent.Therisks multiply! The good news is that there are things thatyou can do to control your diabetes, reduce your risks andstay healthy.

If you are a diabetic, what can you do to reduce your riskof heart disease or stroke

•Ahealthydiet andmedication (if necessary) is essentialfor control of blood sugar.

•Monitor and check your blood glucose levels regularly.Blood glucose levels should be between 4-6mmol/l beforemeals and less than 10mmol/l two hours after meals.

•Give up smoking.•Check your blood pressure regularly and keep it below

130/80mmHg.•Check and manage your cholesterol levels. Your goal

shouldbetohave:atotalcholesterolunder5mmol/l,anLDLcholesterol of less than3mmol/l, anHDLcholesterol of over1.2mmol/l and a triglyceride level of less than 1.5 mmol/l.

•Aim for a healthy weight with a BMI of less than 25, awaistmeasurementof less than80cmforwomenandunder

“Wearedelighted that theNLDTFhascomeonboard, and look forwardto an exciting period of working with

new community theatre groupsaround the province.”

The agreement with the NLDTFmeans that Twist has been able to re-cruit four groups for its new pro-gramme cycle, which will span twoyears.Thegroupswereselectedaftera month of meetings with differenttheatre groups around the province.

Theatreactor,BhekaniShabalala, who was on the provincial tour said:“You can see that some of thesegroupshavespentlittletimewithpeo-ple who have knowledge of the thea-tre scene, but they are still able topresent brilliant, powerful pieces.

“The groups who go to the localcommunity theatre festivals shareideas, seewhere other groups are at,and raise the bar for their next per-formances.It issoimportantthattheyget continued exposure to others sothat they can continue to grow.”

The Twist programme brings thecommunity groups together in tenprojects each year. “It was fun. We had enough of abufferandwedidn’t leaveanythingtochance.”

The pair’s victory comes on theheels of their win in the Vaal Canoe

Marathon last weekend, which alsoserved as SA K2 River MarathonChampionships.

“We got into the boat for the firsttime just over aweek ago, just beforethe Vaal, and straight away felt niceand comfortable,” said Mocké.

Conditions were cool and wind-less and the Albert Falls Dam flat, making for a very fast start to theevent over the 4km lap that led to the1km run around the dam wall.

At the takeout, McGregor andMockeledintotheportage, withAndyBirkettandSboneloZondijustbehindthem in second, Cam Schoeman andJakubAdamin third, followedbyLenJenkins and Matt Bouman in fourth, and reigning Dusi K1 championLanceKime andThulaniMbanjwa infifth.

McGregor and Mocké underlinedtheirfineformandfitnessbyreachingthewater first after the portage, withBirkett and Zondi holding onto sec-ond and Kime and Mbanjwa movingup to third.

The two leading boats then man-aged to open a gap on the other chas-ersuntil, atTheCascades rapids,Mc-Gregor and Mocké put the hammer

Cam Schoeman and Jakub Adamwere in position to capture third, butthey suffered a bent rudder about akilometre-and-a-half from the finishand were passed firstly by Kime andMbanjwa and then by Jenkins andBouman.

“The race was very tough,” Zondisaidafter finishing. “Therewerea lotof good combinations, especially onthe dam where six boats jumped tothe front together.”

Whileheadmittedtonotbeingful-lysatisfiedwith theirperformanceontheday, three-timeDusi champAndyBirkett said he was satisfied with therapid improvements the pair wasmaking every time they paddle to-gether.

“It was a tough race today,” saidthird place finisher Michael Mban-jwa. “I think we did alright. The fieldwasverystrongandHankandJasperare flying! Sbonelo and Andy arealsoverystrongandmanagedtokeepwithupwiththem, wherewecouldn’t.But I thinkwe’regetting better every day.”

“We’retryingtonotreadtoo much into results asthis early stage, but we didnotice that Hank and Jas-perwerevery, very strong,”said Lance Kime. “We knowtheir paddling will always bephenomenal and they also ranverywell today.AndyandSbone-lo are also great all-rounders andtheyarebothgoing tobeverydifficult

to beat in the Dusi.”Women’s winners Adie and Ada-

“We’vehadagoodday,”saidAdie.“It was quite relaxed, especially onthe dam.We just hungwith the othergirls and then just before the portageweputinanintervalandbrokeahead. From the portage there was no look-ing back and we pulled away.”

TALKINGFOOTBALL

FOOTBALL challenges in South Africa should not bedivorced from political, social and economic challenges. Football is an activity where many of our peopleare involved.

Presently, unemployment figures are too high. Thishas an effect on the socioeconomic status of manyof South Africans. We cannot talk of junior leaguesif there are no football clubs within communities. The majority of people are battling for basic things

like food, medical care, accommodation etc. It is scandalous therefore to spend fortunes on parties orevents under such conditions of poverty. A lot of money is spent on lunches for officials while there are nofacilities and equipment for sports. It is unfortunatethatwetendtosupplythosethatarealreadyfatwhilepotential stars are starving. It isachallengetogetthebestoutofstarvingchildren. One needs energy to train and compete effectively.Football challenges therefore should be addressed

with problems of food production, skills development, service delivery, and drug and alcohol abuse.Development of top footballers is not just training

in the fields. It involves everyone including parents, councillors, churches and schools. We have said thisbefore that though leadership is important, individuals cannot be expected to perform miracles.Locally, how do we ensure that young people take

their places among the elite footballers in this country? It will involve cooperation instead of petty jealousies. Acquiring knowledge and its application, hardwork and desire tomake a difference in the lives of the young.Empowerment of the young is not just about money. We can also support people through using our talents, timeand love.Pietermaritzburg has given South Africa top footballers in the past. The present generation of young people have our genes. They will not succeed or work totheir full potential unless we as leaders and adultsplay our role. We need tomove away from the mentality that money can doeverything. Many of us became footballers through sacrifices of

thepreviousgeneration.ThepresentfreeSouthAfricais also a product of sacrifices made by our parents andforefathers. We can do it. We just have to focus more on importantthings than dealing with petty issues. Knowledge, dedication and hard work are what can make youngpeople in our town excel. Managers and coachesshould take responsibility in creating a culture of excellence. Unzima lo mthwalo!

Outdoor gym for Howickresidents>> ‘Free outdoor gyms will be extended to other areas’

RESIDENTS around Howick under uMn-geniMunicipalitywillbeabletotrainfreeof charge in a gym built outdoors for

them.LastThursdaypeople fromvarioussections

ofHowicksuchasMpophomeni,Cedara,How-ickWest, Hhaza, Shiyabazali and others gath-ered at uMngeni sports complex to attend theofficial opening of the unusual outdoor yetworld class gym.

The function attracted a lot of municipalitycouncillors and government officials from theKwaZulu-NatalDepartmentofSportsandRec-reation, led MEC Ntombikayise Sibhidla-Saphetha.

Sibhida-Saphetha said the new outdoorgym was one of the governments ongoingprojectstoencouragepeopletolivehealthylife-syles by training their bodies.

She challenged the members of the publictomakesuretheirbodieswerelookingniceandtrimmedwhen she comes back in a fewweekstime for another project.

“I am saying down with the big tummies, down! I am saying down with the shapelessbodies, down!Whenwecomeback foranotherproject in the Shiyabazali area, I want to seegood looking ladies with figured bodies.

“Tomen, I want to see those broad straightshoulders.

I wants to see six packs not big and roundstomachs. The fact is if we train our bodies wewill live long and stay healthy,” said Sibhidla-Saphetha.

UMngeni mayor Mbali Myeni urged thecommunity to use the facilities and look afterit.

“We are lucky, we won’t pay a cent to trainour bodies. Let’s use these facilities wisely andmake sure that we don’t vandalise them. Wedon’t want to see these facilities becomingwhite elephants,” she said.

SportsandRecreationuMgungundlovudis-trict manager Busi Nkomo says free outdoorgymswill be extended to other areas or wardsaround the district.

“As theMEC pointed out, this is not the endof it.We are looking at other areas because thegovernment’s aim is to build a healthy nationand force that mentality to live a heathly life-style within our communities,”said Nkomo.-Jerry Barnes
