Copesville residents complain about “unresponsive” stationNOKULUNGA NGOBESE>>[email protected]
AMID the recent “mob justice” incident by somecommunity members of Copesville, residents havecited the unresponsiveness of the satellite policestation as the reason for people taking the law intotheir own hands.
Residents who spoke to Echo, but who did notwant to be identified, said that while the crime rateis escalating in the area, there is usually no one toreport it to as police are hardly ever at the station.
According to residents, this year alone there havebeen more than 10 burglaries which have remainedunresolved.
Speaking on behalf of the residents, MbongeniNodada said: “We have complained about the policestation that is forever closed,. When we complained,we were told that this was due to police patrollingother nearby areas, but we do not believe that.
“There is so much crime in the area but people areunable to find assistance. It is by chance if you findthem at the police station. People are forced to taketaxis to Mountain Rise police station. We evensuggested the formation of a Community PolicingForum (CPF) which we were told was already inexistence, but we have not seen it in action.
“We are appealing for the CPF to be restructuredand it should include all racial lines, as crime affectsus all.”
Residents say that they live in fear, with houseburglaries happening while they are at home andhijackings being rife.
“People are taking the law into their own handsbecause they have lost faith in the police. Our houseshave been broken into while we are asleep, we arehijacked at gun point in our driveways. What more canwe do if police are unresponsive?” said anotherresident, who did not want to be identified.
ActingstationcommanderofMountainRisePoliceStation, Colonel Chris Wiles, said that the station isonly closed when there is no electricity supply, thereis a sewage blockage and spillage, operationalchallenges as a result of service delivery protests ora manpower crisis due to emergency redeployments.
“If the station is closed due to any of the abovereasons, a patrol vehicle is tasked to make regularpatrols and checks at the satellite station to assistmembers of the public. There are 12 membersdeployed on a 24 hour shift basis from Mountain Risepolice station, three members per shift including avehicle.
“We humbly apologise for any inconveniencecaused to the community, and the station manage-mentwillmakeeveryefforttoensurethatthesatellitestation is not closed unnecessarily.
“The community is welcome to contact ColonelPillay at 082 418 2018 to report any inconveniencecaused to them by the SAPS or for an urgent responseto a complaint.”

Not all will prosper
IN a class of 90 pupils, we were in a‘special’ class in Grade two in a ruralschool in the late ‘90s.
It was special not in the sense of ourmentalchallenges, whichIdon’tthinkIhad, but in the way we were made to feel proudto be in a classroom the size of two and be-ing taught by two teachers.
Fast forward to another school in atownship and I found myself in a class ofabout 70 pupils in Grade five and we weretold how lucky we were. There were ru-mours of model C schools in townhaving as little as 20 to 30 pupils, but thiswas disregarded as “utter nonsense.”
As the years went by and I changedschools, the class numbers varied and
something disturbing occurred when I wentto high school.
We were given a chance to decide ourfutures in Grade nine, a year before we weremade to choose subjects we would studyfor the remainder of our schooling careers.I will be honest, I chose physics because Ithought it sounded cool.
As luck would have it, I chose a classwith physics and biology and core mathe-matics and accounting as well. There wereseven Grade 10 classes in our school and Iwas in the “double-science” class. Whatworried me, however, was thenumber of Grade 11 and Grade 12 classes.
At my school in 2006, there were fiveclasses in Grade 11 and only three in Grade
12.It was constantly reinforced that not
all of us would make it, that not all of uswere smart enough, and it was half-knocked out of a lot of us how our dreamsof big houses and many cars were unrealis-tic, but we did not know then how bad itwould really be. If I remember correctly, theclass of 2007 Grade 11s was a staggering
strike and they stayed away from theclassroom for, according to my memo-ry, close to a month or longer.
Maybe we can blame the strike forthe dismal results, or maybe it wasbound to happen, but it was seriouslybad. I failed two subjects and pro-duced dismalmarksformathemat-ics. Anyway, I was ‘condoned’ as I wasconsidered a victim of the strike
and given a chance to redeem myself inmatric.
So in Grade 12 we were merged withthe class of Grade 11 G (we being F) as we
both lost many to the hatchet of failure andthe guillotine of drop-out - and just like thatwe became grade 12 D.
We were the guinea pigs for the thennew National Senior Certificate and no oneknew what to expect from us in terms ofpass rates. In the end, we achieved a 96%or so pass rate, but only a quarter or so ofus qualified for university. Of that minutenumber, a smaller fraction still, got accept-ed at university, and fewer still could affordit or were lucky enough to get financial aid.Gloomier still, of those who held out andcontinued to study, a few finished and gottheir degrees and a lucky few of us havebeen fortunate enough to secure employ-ment. Why am I telling this gloomy story? It is just an observation I have made, albeitwith a heavy heart. If this story has a moralto it, it may be that we have to rememberthat not all of us will prosper and that isa reality we can either choose to accept orchange. The reality is, it exists.

“WITH this year’s double increasein interest rates, an increasein inflation and several fuel
hikes, as well as the ripple effect of escalatingfood prices, many consumers’ pockets arestretched to the limit,” said Credit OmbudManie van Schalkwyk.
The reality is that those consumers’needsanddesireswillnotdiminishbecauseof this.Manywillnotbedeterred from satisfying theirurge to spend and they willsimply incurmoredebtandstill sign up forthose gym or cell phonecontracts, he said.
Thisbehaviourmayleadto problems for manyconsumers, warned vanSchalkwyk.
“The National Credit Amend-ment Act has placed a spotlight onaffordability assessments, with proposedguidelines to be implemented to furtherstrengthen the protection afforded to bothconsumers and credit providers alike when itcomes to decisionmaking in extending credit.
“The proposed guidelines, which seekto standardise how affordability assessmentsare conducted, were published forpublic comment and we await the finaldocument and implementation date.
“The law has been created to protectconsumers, but it is often seen as an obstacle.Consumers need to appreciate thataffordability assessments are not there
to restrict or deny them access to creditfor no good reason, but it must be appliedproperly in order to be effective,’ said vanSchalkwyk.
“We always tell consumers that no oneis in a better position to know if they canafford more credit than themselves.
They know their truemonthly expenditureand how far they can stretch their budgets.
“The best advice is for consumers toassess themselves before even going to
a store to apply for credit or take onnew service agreements whichinvolve fixed monthlypayments.
“If your budget is alreadystretched, resist the tempta-tion to enter into anagreement which carrieswith it a monthly instalmentwith interest and costs,”added van Schalkwyk. If the credit provider decides
that you qualify for more credit, itdoes not mean that in actual fact you
can afford it.It is better to assess your own finances
verycritically.Inthisway,youcansaveyourselffrommorefinancialorevenlegal trouble inthefuture.
‘You should also remember to alwaysleave a bit of ‘fat’ in your budget for increasesin interest rates and other unforeseenexpenseswhichmayplaceadditionalpressureon your finances,” he said.

My husbandof 12 years had been taken away from me by anotherwoman. After moving from one herbalist to anotherwithout any success, a colleague at work told meabout Mr Baka. I went there and within three days myhusband came back, using water and a mirror, Bakaalso showed me all my enemies. I have no other wayto thank this man, only to tell the whole world abouthim. He can also boost business, chase bad spellsand tokoloshe, unfinished jobs, quick sale of property, illness, lucky oil to win at the casino and many more.

Bafana take on Congo-Brazzaville
PSL action back in the city
THE PSL show will be back on track on Saturday, after two weeks of Fifa matches.Fixtures around the country are mouth-watering and will be an acid test for most
of the teams after the break. Local outfit Maritzburg United are likely to be one ofthe teams that will appear fit and ready. Team of Choice head coach Steve Komphelaand his management were able to keep the team on course and sharp.
United will host Platinum Stars on Saturday night at 8:15pm at Harry GwalaStadium. Local fans are expected to enjoy an interesting game because the two sidesplay different blends of soccer and the coaches are not at the same level.
Komphela is a natural leader. He is a former Bafana Bafana captain, well travelledand has coached a couple of age groups at the national level. United’s leaguecampaign started on a good note and the team is expected to engage another positivegear in the future to achieve the best that they can. Komphela’s management andleadership has been admired by a lot of people and it is a blessing to the greaterPietermaritzburg area. The Team of Choice is currently sitting in position eight afterseven games. They have won two so far, lost two, drawn three and managed to collect

Zuma saidthat as usual, his team is expected to pull a decentcrowd and begged fans to purchase their ticketsearly. He said that thevisitors will be treatedwith respect but Unit-ed’s aim is to play welland collect maximumpoints at home.
“Platinum Starswon’t be easy custom-ers. We respect thembut Harry Gwala Stadi-um is our home turf andwe will conductourselves as a hometeam enjoying homeadvantage,” said Zuma.
