“No city camera is blocked”
SAFE CITYSAFE CITYNOMPENDULO NGUBANE>>[email protected]za
MEMBERS of the public areurged to open cases toassistwiththeremovaland
prosecution of criminals capturedby the police, in conjunction withSafe City cameras in the centralbusiness district (CBD).
Safe City operations managerJasonHerbert , said this toEchoaf-ter the newspaper published an ar-ticle last week in which JwayelaniButchery man-ager, DonovanGabriel, andstreet vendorswere complain-ing about mug-gings and rob-beries that arerife on the pave-ments of ChurchStreetwhich linethe shop.
They saidthat there is onlyone Safe City camera, which is nothelping them since the streetvendors have blocked it.
According toHerbert, todatenocamerashavebeenblockedor van-dalised. He said this would be diffi-cult as the cameras are monitored24/7.
“However, there are numerousviewing hazards in the area, forexample the Jwayelani butchery islocated in Selgro Centre which hasa veranda that extends over the
pavement. Safe City is working inconjunction with the MsunduziMunicipality in regard to the streettraders and other issues fromwhich these viewinghazards arise.SafeCity has installed a PA systemwhereby Safe City, in conjunctionwith the SAPS, can warn membersof the public when suspicious be-haviour is detected,” he said.
Herbert also said that Safe Citywelcomesallmembersof thepublicto contact them via their smsnumber.
“What is of concern, however, isthat the SAPSwill attend to thecrime and thevictim willdecline toopenacase,” said Her-bert.
The sms lineis 083 7677 233and in an emer-gency, 10111should be di-alled.
When send-ing a sms to SafeCity, members ofthe public should include as muchdetailed information as possible toexpedite the response process, i.e.who/what/where/when and how,he said.
Business owners and membersof the public who would like moreinformation regarding the Pieter-maritzburg Central Station Com-munity Police Forum can contact:Claire Crawley at 082 352 5225 orvia email on [email protected].

Domesticwages go upnext month>> Minimum wages will be increased in time for ChristmasBERNARD REISNER
IN terms of the Sectoral Determination forthedomesticworkersector,minimumwag-es fordomesticworkers inurbanmunicipal
areasare tobe increasedby7.6%as from1De-cember, 2013 andwill remain applicable until30 November, 2014.
The minimum wage increases in the ruralmunicipal areas are to be increased by 8.6%.Theseincreaseswillelicitmixedreactionsfrom
employers of domestic workers and from do-mestic workers themselves.
Certain employers may feel that they canno longer afford to retain the services of a do-mestic worker, while the domestic workersmay feel that the increase is nominal and thatit will not alleviate their struggle to meet theirfinancial commitments.
Theywill continue to strive for a livingwagewhich they have been doing since the promul-gation of this Act in 2002.

“Every child deserves to beloved and to enjoy the true mean-ingofChristmas,whichIbelieve is“loveandgiving”.Andinthatspir-it, why should a child, especiallythe ones living in the rural areas,be deprived of this,” she asked.
According to Narayanan. it’san amazing day fulled with thelaughter of children being on thebus for the first timeor sometimesseeing the Golden Horse Casinofor the first time.
“I am humbly grateful to theGolden Horse Casino and allsupporters, aswellasdonors, whoget on board to make this day aspecial one for special children,”saidNarayanan. Thosewhowishto donate can contact Narayananat0333941031or 0739073637..

THEREaremanypositive things that havetaken place in SouthAfrica as a direct re-sultof the1994political changes thatsaw
a first democratically elected governmentemergingwith a black person at the helm some20 years ago.
But I noticed, even as the government wastakingoverfromthepreviousapartheidregime, therewasanairofdisillusionabout the fact thatthe new democratic dispensation coincidedwithanewviruswhichisresponsibleforthehu-man immune deficiency syndrome.
This simply means that when one has thisvirus one’s body gradually ceases to be able tofight off diseases or illnesses naturally without
medical intervention e.g. ARVs.The impact of HIV on the lives ofmany ordi-
nary people has indeed been catastrophic at atimewhenwewereexpectingthelivesofthema-jority of South Africans to change for the betterdue to the ANC-led political miracle of 1994.
Of particular concern to many South Afri-canshasbeentherisingnumberofparentswhoare leaving their children as a direct conse-quence of being infectedbyHIVanddying fromopportunistic diseaseswhichattack thehumanbody easily when it can no longer defend itselfagainst diseases because of the virus.
Seemingly, many African countries enjoyedtheir freedomwithoutmajorhealth threats, ex-cept for malaria as well as poverty and unem-ployment. But for South Africa, things werepoised to be different from the onset because ofAids.
It is heart-warming to know that there havebeenmanypositivethingswhichSouthAfricansand their government, are doing in order to re-spond to the Aids pandemic. One of them hasbeen therevival of anoldpracticeamongstmen
males to spread (or contract) the virus if theypracticeunprotectedsex.Havingmultiplepart-nerswhich is fuelled by alcohol abuse anddrugaddiction continues to be a serious threat to so-cietalwell-beingbecausereinfec-tion (or getting the virus againand again) occurs when peo-ple engage in unprotectedsex.Ifapersonwhohasbeenshot at with many bulletshas greater chances of dy-ing, why would allowingthevirus toenteryourbodyrepeatedly, especially fromdifferent people, not even-tually kill you?
Drugs, alcohol and in-creased social alienation dueto poverty and unemploymentare directly related to raping oldpeople, children and defense-less women, and that createsfertilegroundforthespreadofHIV and subsequent Aidsdeaths. Ourcountry,partic-ularly KZN, is reported tobe experiencing a highlevel of teenage preg-nancy and this is a suresign that condomuse isnot necessarily as suc-cessful as statistics wouldhaveusbelieveeventhoughawareness campaigns areabundant and sustained.
Community-based interventions involvinggovernment, NGOs, NPOs, international donorcommunity, business are bringing hope. I amthinkinghere of such interventions as theCom-munity Care Givers (CCGs) who are taking careof theneedsofpeople infectedandadverselyaf-fected byHIV andAids, e.g.meeting the basicneedsofchildrenandyouthswhodonothavecaregivers, includingprovidingfood, school, health, recreational as well as spiritual
It is interventions like these that makemewanttotakemyhatoff tothedemocrat-ic government that is now turning 20 forimplementing the Home & CommunityBasedCareconcept. This is about reachingout to people, (especially in rural communi-ties), who are affected and infected by HIVand Aids, with basic needs, including socialgrants that stabilize their lives.
When you read that ‘there are esti-mated over 1,5 million orphans in
South Africa,” many ofwhom are going withoutfood and basic necessities, there is a reason to be con-cerned. Over half of theseorphansarecausedbyHIVand Aids related deaths. They are either taking careof themselves, or livingwith relatives, friends, neighbours or foster par-ents, (not to mention thosethat are in the streets). Ap-
called circumcisionwhich proves to behelpful in reducingHIV transmissionamongst boys andmen as main trans-porters of the virus.
But again, it isgeneral knowledgethat it is still possiblefor circumcised
parently, approximately 5,7million South Af-rican adults and children are estimated to beinfected with HIV and 5,3 million being 15years and older; 3,3 million female and 334,000children, includingpeople livingwithdis-abilities. Abstaining from sex, postponing theday youwill have a sexual encounter or usingcondomswith one partner and knowing yourHIV status as well as male circumcision re-maintheanswer.AsfarasIamconcerned,HIVandAidsareapoliticalmatterbecausetheykillmore in poorer communities. Hence, we say:prevention is better than cure, (I mean nocure!) Iwouldventureintosayingifyouarenotready to behave responsibly please avoidbringing children to theworld because ill-dis-cipline creates orphans.

MUT hopes formore choral award>> The awardwinning MUT choir vies for Nacma top honours
WITHanumberof glowing lo-cal andnationalwinsundertheir baton, Durban’s Man-
gosuthu University of Technology(MUT) choir can now proudly boastqualifying as one of the nominees inthe second annual National ChoralMusic Achievement Awards 2013(Nacma).
TheUmlazibasedchoir –current-ly the champ of champions in theSouth African Tertiary InstitutionsChoral Society – will compete for thegrand trophy under theplatinum category duringthe 6December 2013 spec-tacular red carpet event tak-ing place at the DurbanExhibition Centre.
There are three nomi-nees within this category,whichisoneof22awardcat-egories supporting, recognis-ing and awarding choral excel-lence, while celebrating and hon-ouring the South Africancompetitive talents and artisticexpression in the choral mu-sic sector.
A remarkable successstory, the 70 piece choirboldly stepped out into thechoralmusicplatformde-spite the tertiary institu-tion’s lack of a musicdepartment. Formed inthe mid-80s byformer choir-masterMS Sikhosana, to-gether with a groupof registered stu-dents, the choir’s ini-tial objectives wereto perform during the university’sfunctions; graduation ceremonies;memorial servicesandother internalfunctions.
According toMUTchoir’s Mt Jiya-ne,duringtheearly90stheChoiraffil-iatedwith the Imvunge Choral MusicAssociation, the KwaZulu–Natal mu-sic structure that back then assistedchoirs;,ran provincial music compe-titions and workshops.
“By affiliating with this structure, thechoirwas inaposition tocompetewith community choirs. Althoughthey were a university choir, theywerecompeting in thestandardcate-gory and continue to compete in thiscategory.
Itwas toughand it is still toughbe-cause they use strictly registered stu-dents in thechoir. In short theydevel-op choristers and all of their choris-ters come from different regions andprovinces of South Africa.”
In 1993 the choir affiliated with
the South African Tertiary Institu-tions Choral Association (Satica),where all South African Institutionsmeetandcompeteagainst eachotherfor an entire week.
“In the Satica the Choir competesonthePlatinumlevelwithsomeof thetop South African Universities. De-spiteMUTnothavingamusicdepart-ment, the choir’s standards matchtha t of
other institutions that offer musicprogrammes.
“MUTisproudthat it isabledevel-op choristers to match the nationalstandard,”saidchoirmaster,MrJiya-ne. The League had initially banned Khenyeza for 12months for allegedly spitting at a match officialwhile still on the books of Ajax Cape Town. However, heappealedthedecisionandgotthebanoverturned to only an effective R25 000 fine. But the League then in turn appealed the decisionwith the Safa appeals’ aboard, with PSL CEO Brandde Villiers saying that they “weren’t happy at theLeague with the outcome”.The case was meant to sit on Monday but it hasbeen postponed due to Safa’s inability to find anarbitrator. WEare at a stage in the history of South Africawherepeopleneedtopauseandthinkabouttheimportant things in life. This is a period whenwe have seen so many religions and churchesspringing up all over the show.
It is a good thing that people are turning toGod.However, thepointstill remainsthat thereis no bigger religion than service to humanity. We are presently obsessed with serving our-selves.
It is in this spirit that one has to appreciatetheroleplayedbysomeofourdeparteduncles, fathers, mothers and brothers in football. Thefootballinstitution,undermyleadership,bene-fitted hugely fromPadsa, an organisation builtover the years by selfless men and women.
Uncle Thumba, Ronnie Naidoo and manyothers spent countless hours serving the youth
of this country in the football fields.Personally, I benefited tremendously from
men like Henry Mhlongo, Phillip “Uncle”Ndlovu and many others who cared about us.I doubt if the majority of us realises that SouthAfrica is our country.
Presently, it seems as if the important ques-tion iswhat can this country do forme?Wearealways looking at how life can serve us insteadof the opposite.
Theysaycharitybeginsathome.Howdoweexpect the country to advance if parentswouldratherbuyalcohol insteadof food for theirownchildren? How does it help us to fill churcheson Sundayswhen the youth are dying of drugsandalcohol?Howdoweclaimto loveourcoun-try when we leave patients dying in hospitalandpupils loiteringintheclassrooms? Is itpos-sible to volunteer your services when you arecheating the system in your place of employ-ment?
I salute men and women who spend theirfree time serving others. This is what SouthAfrican football requires. Presently, it is moreabout free tickets, free lunches and hotelrooms. Our boys and girls deserve better thanwe are doing presently.
Let us start dirtying our hands to help ourcountry progress. Unzima lo mthwalo!

Piratesin yetanotherFINALFINAL
>> Having been the runners up of the Caf Champions League and MTN8, they are now in the final of the Telkom Knockout
ALTHOUGH the talks in local soccer cir-clesarealreadyabout theTelkomKnockOut final scheduled for December 7 at
Mbombela Stadium in Mpumalanga, leaguegames are also going on as planned in the fix-tures.
Ahandfulof fixturesstartedonTuesdayandWednesday, but more games will take placeover the weekend.
The local PSL outfit, Maritzburg United, hostedthehighridingOrlandoPirateslastnight(Wednesday) at Harry Gwala Stadium.
The other KZN side, AmaZulu, also hostedanother on form team, Platinum Stars at Prin-cess Magogo Stadium in KwaMashu.
The results of these fixtures were not yetavailable at the time going to print.
OnSaturday,Usuthuwill travel toPretoria’s
Tuks Stadium to square up against Universityof Pretoria at 3.30pm. Things have not kickedoff on a sweet note for Usuthu under the guid-ance of Craig Rosslee. What is also interestingis that Amatuks are in an uncomfortable posi-tion on the log table and need to redeem them-selves. Rosslee insists that they lost a handfulof games recently because of “small and care-less”mistakesbytheirdefence. Usuthuspokes-person, PhilaniMabaso, says the situation hasreceived enough attention from all the stake-holders andwas on themend. “It’s not bad as
many people think. That is what happens is inthe name of the game and it can’t be avoidedbut canbe controlled.Weare on the right trackandeverybody in the teamisworkinghardandare united so that we do better in our nextgames,”said Mabaso.
