Wow, what a wonderful school community! Over the last 2 weeks I have been impressed again and again with the learning experiences provided and products created as a result of this experience. In the next newsletter, you will see and read more about Science Week which culminated in the Expo enjoyed by many on Friday last week. Kerry Crosby, with a team of dedicated students, ran demonstrations of chemical reactions all day, while students enjoyed looking and asking questions about scientific investigations on display in an adjacent classroom created by students across all year levels of the school. The displays showed deep learning about topics varying from how much sugar is found in a 350ml bottle apple juice compared to a can of coke….almost the same!!! To a car crash simulator – on average those texting had 17 accidents compared to 3 of non-texting drivers in a prescribed time

period. Congratulations go to all staff and students for committing to this project and creating such awesome displays of the learning! To add to the excitement and excellent learning opportunities, the choir travelled to Adelaide to rehearse for their big performance at the Festival Theatre in a few weeks, after performing at the Kadina Show. The Band will be performing at the Royal Adelaide Show this Friday – another first for our students – hats off to Nathan Hamdorf and his pupils! Other exciting learning developments include but are not contained to, our NAPLAN Results - congratulations to all staff and students! This year we have improved significantly in all but one aspect (writing). That means that in Reading, Spelling, Grammar and Punctuation and Numeracy a majority of our students are surpassing the National Minimum standard. Individual results will be sent home in the coming week. Please contact the school if you would like to discuss your child’s results. Year 9, 10 and 11 students and their families participated in a course counselling information session last week. Parents and students have been invited to attend interviews with home group teachers next week to finalise course choices for 2015. If you were unable to make this information

session and would like to make an appointment please call the school and ask to speak to Sam Schultz. Secondary student reports will be coming home at the end of the term and interviews for parents of children in reception to Year 6 are available next week. There is still a chance to book an interview if you have not yet done so by calling the front office. Pupil Free Day Friday 12th September Our last Pupil Free Day for the year is shaping up to a very productive day. Staff will be participating in a range of training sessions. SSOs will focus on the new version of Word, supporting students with Autism and mentoring students. Teaching staff will concentrate on The Australian Curriculum. Thank you for supporting our professional learning.

Moonta Area School recently held its course counselling and parent information evening for students who will be entering years 10, 11 and 12 in 2015. Students and their families were given information packs and a presentation with all the relevant information required to make informed subject selections for the coming year. After each presentation all guests were invited to have some tea, coffee and nibbles in the Library where they could also seek further advice or information from many of the senior school teachers who were in attendance on the night. Students and families who were not able to attend the sessions will receive the information packs through students home groups and are encouraged to talk to their teachers or call the school if they have any questions regarding their subject selections next year. Those students who are entering into year 11 and 12 next year will also need to ensure they made a booking for a course counselling interview through their home groups. Course counselling interviews will be held on Wednesday 10th September for students moving into

year 11 and on Thursday 11th September for students moving into year 12. The interviews are 20 minute sessions that can be used to check students subject selections with a teacher and family member and discuss career options and other implications of their selections. Students and their families are encouraged to have discussed and selected subjects prior to the meeting which can then be reviewed. If these dates or times are not suitable for you or your family please contact the school to make alternative arrangements. We look forward to guiding students and their families through this important and exciting period of their schooling lives. Important dates Year 10 into 11 Course Counselling Interviews:

Wednesday 10th September 8 a.m. – 5 p.m.

Year 11 into 12 Course Counselling Interviews: Thursday 11th September 8 a.m. – 5 p.m.

You may be aware that our school is in the initial stages of implementing a BYOD (Bring Your Own Device) program for year 7 – 12 students. Why are we promoting BYOD? The federally funded Digital Educational Revolution (DER) program, which provided significant funds for schools nationally to purchase devices (such as laptops, desktops and tablets) and to establish infrastructure (such as servers, networks and WIFI connectivity) has now ceased. Whilst it is unfortunate that this funding has discontinued, our school needs to be innovative and proactive in its drive to move our education system into a 21st Century model of teaching and learning. Access to technology is vital in a future-focused leaning environment and we strongly believe that BYOD can facilitate this.

Considerations We recognise that just like uniforms, supplies and extra curricula activities; a laptop for student use represents a significant investment for families. Although our school will continue to maintain the devices that we currently have for student use, these are becoming ‘tired’, many have been damaged and it’s not financially viable for us to upgrade these. BYOD ownership options for: 1. Use an existing device that the student uses at

home – provided it meets the minimum specifications (as shared with students in a ‘blue booklet’ earlier this year)

2. Purchase a new, pre-used or refurbished device from a reputable seller.

3. Purchase a school recommended device. Our IT Team are exploring options to provide students with a small choice of devices which include the Microsoft Office suite of programs (such as Word, Excel and PowerPoint).

4. Lease a device from a reputable company.

We appreciate your ongoing support and encourage families to support this Year 7-12 initiative.
