Welcome to 2020

Welcome to all of our new families and students for 2020 and

welcome back to those families and students continuing with us

this year. We have had a fabulous start to the year, where staff

have supported students to focus on being Powerful Learners and

the learning behaviours they need to develop in order to do their

best.

Thank you to all families who came to our Welcome Night on

Student learning is maximised when teachers, students and

view of education. If you were unable to make the evening and

want to catch up with any of your child’s teachers please call the

school to make an appointment.

Welcome back to Japanese for 2020!

Why do we offer a second language?

Why Japanese?

Knowledge of an Asian language is becoming an increasingly desired skill in graduates. Japanese offers an interesting, challenging and widely applicable language to start learning. Moonta Area School has been offering Japanese lessons to its students for many years and has a long history of hosting groups of Japanese High School students from Meiji Nakano Hachioji High School (outside of Tokyo) as a part of the annual Homestay program. MAS has also offered its middle and high school students the opportunity to participate in a biannual cultural experience trip to Japan since 2015. Students of the 2017 & 2019 trips visited Meiji School as a part of their itinerary and caught up with previous years’ homestay students.

This year students will be once again participating in a Japanese language and culture lessons with Mrs Swan. 2020 brings “nezumi doshi”, (the year of the mouse), studies around introducing family and self, Tokyo Olympics, nature, telling time and personal schedules amongst other things!

We look forward to sharing our successes with you throughout the year in “Nihongo News”. Happy language learning everyone!

~Mrs Swan

ADVANCED NOTICE: 2020 JAPANESE HOMESTAY

In early Term 3 this year, we once again plan to host a group of students from Meiji Nakano Hachioji High School, near Tokyo. Exact dates of this years’ visit are yet to be finalized, but will fall within the first four weeks of Term 3 with our guests staying for two weeks. The Japanese students are 15-16 years old and we are looking for families with similar aged students who may like to host. It is a terrific opportunity for families and students to learn, share cultures and build international friendships.

During the day, the Japanese students will attend a school program to improve their English. The family’s role is to provide the after school experience of Australian family life. Those who have done this in the past have really enjoyed the experience. The accreditation process is not a difficult one, and happens early Term 2. Please call us at school on 8825 2088 if you would like more information or fill out the reply slip and return to Mrs Swan via the Front Office.

JAPANESE HOMESTAY 2020 - Expression of Interest Reply Slip – (*Please return to Mrs Swan, via the Front Office*)

Our family is interested in the possibility of hosting a Japanese high school student for two weeks in early Term 3, 2020 as a part of this year’s homestay.

Parent Name/s Student Name/s & Class Daytime Phone No.

The Language Centre is open once again to students in Year 3 and up on Wednesday lunchtimes from 12:50-1:20pm – Activities include origami making (paper folding), Japanese toys, colouring, music, puzzling and general merriment!

The Japanese writing system has three scripts used in everyday life in Japan. Hiragana (あいうえお) is used for words

from the Japanese culture, Katakana (アイウエオ) is used for foreign names and words borrowed from other cultures

and Kanji (日本語) are picture characters acquired from China.

I will be introducing a slightly different format for our hiragana and katakana challenge this year. Students in Years 3-6 are invited to join the challenge. Characters (letters) will be divided into 9 levels, 9 belts for Hiragana (and 9 belts for Katakana). Once all characters and “spelling words” from a given set are memorized, students may elect to complete a test in Japanese lessons and during Japanese club. Successful tests will receive a certificate at our whole school assemblies.

For more information, please come and chat with me. がんばって!!! (Do your best!) ~ Mrs. Swan
