As is customary at the end of the year school staff

and students are busy collecting and analysing

data to see how we have gone in achieving the

goals we set ourselves at the beginning of the

year. One of our major goals this year was to work

on the systems we use when students engage in

poor behaviours. I am happy to report that the

data shows our new system is making a big

difference to learning environments and

supporting students to accept the supports being

offered to them.

At our Pupil Free Day on Friday the 24th of

November, staff will be looking at this year’s

learner achievement data – PAT-M, PAT-R,

Attendance, NAPLAN and more to see how we

have progressed with improving student

achievement. We will be asking ourselves specific

questions about what we can do over the next

year to move each student from where they are

now to achieving a minimum of 12 months growth

in that time.

Thank you to all parents for responding to our

parent opinion survey. We will be looking closely

at your responses on Friday afternoon to make

sure our plans for 2018 reflect your wishes.

As you will have heard in the media Moonta Area

School has been awarded a further 4 million dollars

to upgrade our facilities. DECD and architects will

be visiting on Wednesday the 6th of December to

inform us about the criteria for the new project and

hopefully give us dates for the commencement of

the current STEM works project. We look forward to

the educational possibilities this funding will ensure.

In closing I would like to invite you to our Award

Ceremonies. The Year 7-12 Celebration will be held

on Tuesday the 12th of December at 9am and the

R-6 Celebration will be held on Wednesday the 13th

of December, also starting at 9am. I hope to see

you all there to celebrate the learning that has

occurred at Moonta Area School over the course

of 2017.

From the

Nihongo News! 日本語ニュース!

It’s been another great term of Japanese

language learning for our students - here’s a

snapshot of what we’ve been up to so far!

R-2 students have been having fun consolidating

their learning of colours, animals and their sounds

through song, dance, pictures and the well-

known story “Brown Bear”. We’re now focusing

on creating simple sentences using all the new

words we’ve learnt!

Year 3 students have been revising their

knowledge of numbers and kanji, working

towards an understanding of 1-100 as well as

learning a bit about the Japanese school system.

Year 4-6 students meanwhile have been learning

all about the Japanese school system – and

drawing comparisons between theirs and our

own, as well as learning vocabulary to describe

school subjects, their preferences, and their year

levels. Much horror was expressed when it was

discovered that Japanese school students have

formalized cleaning of their school for 15 minutes

every day – including jobs like sweeping,

mopping, window washing and even cleaning

the toilets, but it was generally agreed that they

would all like the hot lunches!

Ribbon Challenge!!!

In addition to regular classwork, the following students

from Years 3-6 have been working hard, and achieved

their next ribbons by memorizing a selection of

Japanese written characters:

よくできました! (Yokudekimashita), well done to our

award winners and ありがとう(arigatou), thank you, to

all of the students who had a go, keep up the

practice and がんばって(ganbatte), good luck, for the

rest of the term. ~ Mrs Swan

P.S. WHAT’S ON IN JAPAN THIS MONTH?

November 15th is the Shichi-Go-San ("7-5-3") Nation-wide Festival

in Japan, celebrated as a gala day for three and five-year-old

boys (or, in many areas, for five-year-old boys only) and three

and seven-year-old girls.

On this day, prayers are offered for the healthy

and happy futures of the children. These ages in

particular are celebrated both because the

ages of three, five and seven are seen as

important markers of stages in a child's growth,

and because odd numbers are seen as lucky in

Japan.

2018 JAPANESE HOMESTAY

Don’t forget to reply if you are keen to host a Japanese Homestay student next year!!

Next year we plan to once again host a group of students from Meiji Nakano Hachioji High School near

Tokyo. The dates for next year are not yet set, but they stay for two weeks and visit within the first four weeks

of Term 3. The Japanese students are 15-16 years old and we are looking for families with similar aged

students who may like to host. It is a terrific opportunity for families and students to learn, share cultures and

build international friendships. During the day the Japanese students will attend a school program to

improve their English. The family’s role is to provide the after school experience of Australian family life. Those

who have done this in the past have really enjoyed the experience. There is an accreditation process which

is not difficult, and would happen next year. At this stage we are hoping to collate a list of interested families

to have for our records. Please call us at school on 8825 2088 if you would like more information or fill out the

reply slip and return to Mrs Swan or the front office.

JAPANESE HOMESTAY 2018 - Expression of Interest Reply Slip **Please return to Mrs Swan or front office**

Our family is interested in the possibility of hosting a Japanese high school student for two weeks in early Term 3,

2018 as a part of next year’s homestay.

Culinary Adventures!!!

This term R-2 students have

enjoyed making matcha

pikelets, a Japanese green tea

flavoured take on a traditionally

western treat! Years 3-6

however are making

“Okonomiyaki” – a very popular

dish, meaning “Grilled as you

like”, essentially, grilled

vegetable patties with meat of

your choice – we tried out a

bacon version!

Year 7 Camp Day 2 was action packed with the morning spent

at Glenelg Beach House to cool off. After a quick

lunch the group headed to Mega Adventure

which was a highlight for many. Once in

harnesses and given a few lessons, students

climbed the towers which included a number of

zip lining challenges and concluded with the

drop from the top which was 18 metres above

the ground. After checking into accommodation

and a swim in the pool, the group travelled to

Marion for tea and a relaxing game of Ten Pin

Bowling.

After packing up on the last morning we were off

to Bounce which was strongly recommended by

the students. The one-hour session was high

paced and the students demonstrated their skill

and athleticism. The bus trip home was a bit

quieter with a number of students sleeping. A big

thank you to Jane McCauley and Janine Bennett

for their help on the camp and well done to all

students involved for their behaviour and

participation.

To begin Term 4, the Year 7 group travelled to

Adelaide for their three-day camp. The students

arrived fresh after their holiday and boarded the

bus bound for stop Number 1, Adelaide Oval.

During the tour students went inside the historic

scoreboard, saw the football and cricket change

rooms, had a chance to look through the

museums and even were allowed to walk around

the edge of the hallowed turf!

Stop 2 and the first night was spent at Adelaide

Zoo. First, students had the chance to explore the

zoo. Some highlights were the lions and tigers,

hippopotamus, baby meerkats and the pandas.

During the evening students experienced a night

walk and then settled for the night in tents on the

roof top. In the morning the students had one last

chance for a walk around the zoo and a close up

experience with a corn snake before departing.

Year 3 Camp In Week One, Miss Harris and Mrs Crosby’s Year 3

classes went on their first school camp to Narnu Farm,

Hindmarsh Island. They participated in a variety of

activities including horse riding, butter making, hand

ploughing, blacksmithing, animal feeding, chicken

hatchery and a vintage truck ride.

The students had a wonderful time and showed

bravery in travelling so far from their families for the

first time. They enjoyed the opportunity to be more

independent.

We commend the students on their outstanding

behaviour. Their good manners were commented

upon by Narnu staff.

A big thank you goes to Sonia

Perkins and Darren Cockshell for

accompanying us and supporting

our students.

BRING YOUR OWN DEVICE

In 2018 Moonta Area School will

require students in years 7-12 to

“Bring Your Own Device”.

Students will need to bring a laptop computer that

can be recognized by the school network which will

enable them to use the Internet and a range of

software commonly used in the school.

Now the Digital Education Funding is well and truly

gone, we are unable to maintain the number of

computers that we have been able to over the

past 10 years or so hence requiring students to

BYOD so that they can continue to access this

technology for their learning.

Information has been sent home over the last

semester including specifications to be compatible

with our operating system.

Please call Samantha Schultz or Nina Penna at the

school if you require another copy of these.

& This semester, Miss Wenzel’s R/1

class and Miss Harris’ Year 3 class

have been participating in a

wide range of cross-curricular

buddy lessons. Activities have

included buddy reading,

outside games, spelling

activities, maths games,

collaborative artwork, and

more. These activities have

helped to build team-work,

communication and social skills.

Completing these lessons with buddies from different year levels also helps to build

social connections across different sectors of the school, and promotes a sense of

community. Plus it’s lots of fun!

LEAVING OR ENROLLING FOR 2018?

During Term Three we begin looking at

our class and staffing structures for the

following year. In order for us to do that

accurately we need to have an

indication of likely enrolment numbers.

If you plan on leaving MAS for the 2018 school year we

would appreciate it if you could let us know. We are more

than happy to meet with you to discuss the educational

needs of your child. If you are aware of any families

wanting to enrol their children for next year, please

encourage them to let us know as soon as possible.
